Olympic swimming legend Ryan Lochte has suffered a freak injury after being confronted by an eager fan.
The five-time Olympic gold medallist managed to tear one ligament and sprain another in his left knee in Gainesville, Florida, last weekend after trying to catch the teenager as she ran towards him.
The two fell over with Lochte damaging his knee. The girl was not hurt.
The American's publicist Janice Lee expects Lochte "to make a full and speedy recovery". But the nature of the injury could see him sidelined for at least six weeks.
Lochte trained in Gainesville for several years after representing University of Florida. He has moved his training base to Charlotte.
The five-times Olympic gold medallist could be forced to miss representing the US against Europe at the Duel in the Pool in Scotland on December 20-21.
