Mario Balotelli might have lost out on a winners' medal at Euro 2012, but he has picked up the best possible consolation prize after learning that he is to become a father.
The Manchester City striker's on-off-on again girlfriend Raffaella Fico has confirmed that the 21-year-old is the father of her unborn child.
And it seems that impending fatherhood inspired Balotelli to his best performance of the recent tournament: he found out the news the day before Italy's magnificent 2-1 semi-final victory over Germany, in which the striker scored both of his side's goals.
"I called the day before the game against Germany and I said, 'I'm expecting a baby, it's your baby'," Fico told Italian website Sport Mediaset.
"After a pause he said 'You gave me the best news of the world'.''
The pair split up in April after news emerged that Balotelli had had a string of affairs – including one with a vice girl previously linked with Wayne Rooney.
But the pair are now getting back together - and Super Mario has apparently decided to mend his ways and settle down with his new family.
