Ashes Warne-ing unfounded

Tue Jun 03 12:44PM

The conclusion of the inaugural IPL left a taste in Cowers' mouth as bitter as a witch's teet.

Sunday's final victory for the Rajasthan Royals might have been a triumph for the underdog; a coup for the unsung, the obscure, the shrewd. Unfortunately, it was also a triumph for Shane Warne - and no-one wanted that.

Thankfully, Warne's manager has confirmed that the England tormentor won't be making a Test comeback following the sudden retirement of Stuey MacGill.

Not because he is desperately unfit, or as demotivated as a student with a DVD box set of 24, a free afternoon and a potfull of weed - but because he "didn't have the time."

"This year alone he has commitments on 198 days," his manager confirmed. That's time for a whole lot of texting.

Fortunately, despite the continuing Warne-shaped limelight, the IPL did have its advantages for English cricket fans - the tournament managed to crock the South African skipper just weeks before the start of the Proteas' tour.

Graeme Smith had been rested by the Royals because of hamstring trouble before he pulled up again with a separate hamstring tear in the semi-final on Friday. South Africa's captain and leading batsman now faces four weeks of intensive treatment before the start of the first Test at Lord's on July 10.

Should it come as any surprise that Ashley Giles, a man as boring as Big Brother audition, pines for the good old days, when you didn't need a guarantor to buy a tank of petrol and a personal computer needed to be housed in a small extension on the side of your house?

Giles, formerly a King of Spain, now an England selector, has hit out at  'lazy' counties who sign Kolpak players from overseas.

"Signing Kolpak players is like easy shopping, internet shopping. Instead of getting out there and doing the hard yards trying to find what you're looking for, you can just have it delivered to your door."

Cowers has the utmost sympathy for Mrs Giles, for whom birthdays and Christmas must be a desperately disappointing succession of gifts from Woolworths and Poundstretcher.

  2. Internet good or evil? Who cares? Is that the best you can do, Cowers? No doubt Arvie will have an opinion or twenty, though... ;)

Although I agree with the Cowing One's opinion on Giles, I do think he's got a point this time as an England selector - Kolpak players can't be good for the game.

As for Warne, well I love watching him bowl even if he is an Aussie. What a bowler in any form of the game.

  7. Obviously Gilo is working hard down at the ECB and has no time for loafing about online, writing on blogs and looking for games.
Internet is clearly evil as it keeps providing me with opportunities for avoiding the work I really, really need to do
