16:18 - Thanks for joining us, and come back tomorrow for potentially decisive fireworks on the legendary L'Alpe-D'Huez.
16:16 - The new GC: 1. Frank SCHLECK 68h30'16'' 2. Bernhard KOHL +07'' 3. Cadel EVANS +08'' 4. Carlos SASTRE +49'' 5. Denis MENCHOV +1'13'' 6. Christian VANDEVELDE +3'15'' 7. Kim KIRCHEN +3'23'' 8. Alejandro VALVERDE +4'11'' 9. Samuel SANCHEZ +4'38'' 10. Tadej VALJAVEC +5'23''
0km - Nibali is a full 5'13 down on today's stage winner. Schleck's group was exactly 1'28" off pace, who took about 2'31" out of Vandevelde.
0km - Vandevelde and Kreuziger cross together about two minutes behind the yellow jersey group!! The American and Czech are the other big losers today.
0km - Menchov, Szmyd and Kirchen come in two minutes behind Dessel and about 30 seconds behind the yellow jersey group.
0km - No one's been able to attack the yellow jersey, as Menchov and Kirchen have definitely lost a bit of time.
0km - Schumacher is about 1'02" behind Dessel.....
0km - CYRIL DESSEL WINS IT!! Then Casar, then Arroyo, and Popovych!! Hincapie leads the next group at 25 seconds back, but the winner is the AG2R man....
1km - Arroyo goes now, and Dessel catches and overtakes him around that final bend and over the slight bridge........
1.3km - Popovych launches his attack!! Casar follows.... There's a sharp right hand turn coming up shortly before the ride straight in.....
1km - Sanchez has caught the Hincapie group, and he could threaten the four leaders maybe.....
2km - Menchov has lost 34 seconds on the yellow jersey group!! All from this descent!
3km - Popovych, we would think, is the favourite out of these four men to take the victory.
5km - With five kilometres to go, the four leaders have about 30 seconds on the chasing trio, and 1'34" on Sanchez, and 1'45" on the yellow jersey group.
7km - Portal, Hincapie, and Siutsou are being distanced by the lead descenders, while Schumacher is further behind them.
9km - Sanchez continues to build a gap, but it's only about seven seconds over the Maillot Jaune group, who are 1'45" behind the four men who will likely contest the stage win.
10km - Menchov and Kirchen are losing about 13 seconds on the maillot jaune now! They can see the yellow jersey group over every bend.
12km - They continue to slowly, cautiously wind their ways down this massive mountain. Cunego was actually with the yellow jersey, it was his Lampre team-mate Szmyd who was stuck with Kirchen and Menchov.
13km - Kirchen and Menchov are looking very awkward on this descent, while Sanchez is flying.
15km - Menchov has slipped back to Cunego and Kirchen in this descent, and he has really let the gap go.
16km - Popovych, Arroyo, Casar and Dessel are still leading the race, with the yellow jersey bunch at 1'44" back.
17km - Sanchez is descending like a hawk, and Kohl is as well, as the Austrian is sniffing the yellow jersey possibly! What a great descent! Kirchen is just trying to keep pace.....
18km - The placements back at the summit of the Bonette: 1. Augustyn, 2. Dessel, 3. Popovych, 4. Casar, 5. Hincapie, 6. Valjavec, 7. Siutsou, 8. Portal, 9. Schumacher
18km - Gap down 1'38".
20km - Popovych nearly ran into the motorbike that was tending to Augustyn, who is stranded at the top of this mountain!! All of that work for nothing.
22km - Augustyn has gone straight over the barrier!!!!! The South African goes sliding down the gravel!!! Insane!! His bike is gone, and he is able to climb back up the mountain on all fours like a frog!! He is desperate to find his bike, but that shows the risks of this descent.
22km - Valverde suffers greatly on the steepest portion of this climb, and is nearly dropped along with Kirchen but the two men follow Kohl, the CSC boys, Evans and Cunego on the steep descent. The gap is 2'04" at the summit as Augustyn is caught by his fellow escapees. The long, fast, dangerous descent into the finish at Jausiers.
23km - Augustyn follows in the footsteps of Robert Millar and goes over the Cime de la Bonette-Restefond first!
23km - As the climb reaches its steepest and highest portions, some of the front group begin to fade, including Big George Hincapie. Augustyn meanwhile nears the summit....
23km - AUGUSTYN ATTACKS!! The South African from Barloworld makes a move for the points, or maybe more, about a half a kilometre from the summit!
24km - One kilometre to the summit for the leaders, with 2'07" in hand......
24km - Gap up to 2'08" with Voigt still putting the hammer down for CSC. Kirchen still riding at the back of the yellow jersey group, right behind Sanchez.
24km - Here's that front group, which is being closed on fast by the yellow jersey bunch: Popovych, Arroyo, Portal, Hincapie, Siutsou, Augustyn, Dessel, Valjavec, and Casar. Stefan Schumacher is being distanced, and falling way, way back. It's been a long day in the saddle for the German.
24km - Maxime Monfort being taken in by the yellow jersey group. Nibali and Kreuziger are not there though, so there could be a change in the white jersey classification.
24km - Gap down to 2'30".
24km - Voigt is doing a turn at the front of the yellow jersey group, as Chris Froome is being passed by the yellow jersey.
25km - Jens Voigt has fallen back to the yellow jersey group, and is now feeding his CSC team-mates with water.
25km - Valverde makes a move, but Sastre and Kohl easily follow him, Kim Kirchen is being distanced and Kohl counter-attacks.... Gap down to 2'45" but Kirchen is the only one who is dropped.... Temporarily, as Schleck moves back to the front with the pace slowing and Kirchen is allowed to return to the yellow jersey group.
26km - Vockler distanced from the lead group, Schumacher is staying with the Valjavec group though. Astarloza being distanced by the yellow jersey now.
27km - Dessel overtakes Schumacher, who could still stay with this lead group who could contest the stage if they can hold off the yellow jersey long enough. The gap to the big boys is 3'22". No one considering an attack in the yellow jersey group, with L'Alpe-D'Huez still to come tomorrow.
27km - Astarloza has now been caught by the yellow jersey group.
27km - Gap from Schumacher to the peloton is 3'50".
28km - Norwegian national champion Arvesen is finally dropped. For CSC it's the Schleck's and Sastre who are left. Menchov and Kohl with them along with Kirchen, Valverde, and Sanchez.
28km - Schumacher looks like he's getting a bit of a second wind, but the gap is only 24 seconds to the nine chasers.
29km - Arvesen still working incredibly hard for his captain.
30km - Gap to Valjavec group is 30 seconds, and to the yellow jersey is 4'30".
31km - 9 chasers at 40" behind Schumacher: Hincapie (Silence), Portal (Caisse d'Epargne), Hincapie and Siutsou (Columbia), Augustyn (Barloworld), Dessel and Valjavec (AG2R), Casar (FDJeux). Cunego is 1'10" back.
32km - Kim Kirchen has managed to stay with the group of favourites along with Evans, Sastre, the Schleck brothers, Samuel Sanchez, Valverde, Kohl, and Menchov. But Vandevelde and Efimkin have both been dropped!
32km - Former yellow jersey wearer (2006) Cyril Dessel is working incredibly hard for Valjavec right now! They may have caught CSC napping and could steal the yellow jersey tonight! Schumacher is just 45 seconds away now. The peloton is 4'20" behind the chasers.
33km - Stage 11 victor Kurt-Asle Arvesen has been caught by the Maillot Jaune group and is now working hard for his captains as CSC just continue to show their depth.
33km - Andy Schleck starting to do a lot of damage now for his brother Frank. This is the second highest road in Europe, and the highest ever used in the Tour de France.
33km - The chasers are one minute from Schumacher, and 4'55" ahead of the yellow jersey group, which has just dropped Efimkin.
33km - Mario Aerts and Nicholas Vogandy have fallen off the back of the peloton, while Tschopp and Voigt have been distanced by the Valjavec group. Popo has attacked Valjavec, and Siutsou has followed him! This is kind of curious? He could be going for the stage victory rather than protecting his team leader.
34km - Gap to the yellow jersey is down to 6'40" for Schumi. Still a ways to go.
34km - Valjavec tries another attack, but Popovych, Siutsou and Augustyn stay on his wheel. Cunego is struggling badly at the back of the first chase group yet again! Szmyd is trying his best to two his team leader back, but to no avail. The first chase group is being split in two.
34km - Having done his part for CSC, Gustov falls off the back of the yellow jersey group. Still a lot of riders in that bunch.
35km - Cunego and Szmyd are falling off the back of the chase group!
35km - The chasers are just two minutes behind Schumacher, while the yellow jersey group is 7'45" back.
35km - Bruce has asked about Popovych and Evans: "I thought these guys were on the same team? Evans has been complaining that he was on his own against 3 CSC riders, and now Popovych has ridden up ahead of him. If Evans had a stronger team I could understand it, but this seems crazy." Well, Valjavec just tried to go off the front of that first chase group in a play for the yellow jersey, but Popovych was right there to police him and keep him in check.
36km - Gap to the yellow jersey group is down to 8'08" as CSC is really powering things at the front of that group. We were mistaken when we were earlier reported that Astarloza and Carrara had been caught, but they are still riding in between the two main chase groups along with Flecha and Txurruka.
37km - Gustov and Fothen do work at the front of the yellow jersey group, which catches Pate.
37km - Bernhard Kohl's Gerolsteiner team-mate Sebastian Lang (Gerolsteiner) has joined CSC to do some work at the front of the peloton, which is just being steadily thinned out.
37km - Dumoulin fading fast behind the peloton. The stage three winner had been in the initial break, but will now battle to finish today.
38km - Haimar Zubeldia is being distanced now as is Philippe Gilbert. The heat has to start playing a factor at this point.
39km - The gap between the yellow jersey and Schumacher is 9'24".
40km - Zabel (Milram), Dupont (AG2R) are dropped by the peloton.
40km - Cancellara finished his turn at the front of the peloton and has dropped off. The Swiss will finish this stage at his own pace. Gustov, Andy Schleck, Sastre and Frank Schleck are all still at the front for CSC. Kohl is right behind the yellow jersey.
41km - Schumi has three minutes on the first chase group and 10'33" on the yellow jersey group.
42km - Pozzato is already cooked, falling off the back. Cancellara has moved to the front for Frank Schleck and Carlos Sastre.
43km - Andy Cripps wrote in earlier with the unlikely prediction of Pozzato "(dont ask me why!?!)", and wouldn't you know it the former Milan-San Remo winner is riding at the front of the peloton at the start of this ascent! He is putting in a big effort with the CSC team, working for white jersey Vincenzo Nibali, and will likely fall back eventually.
44km - Lots of guys already falling off the peloton at the base of this climb. Hushovd is gone, along with several others.
45km - Schumacher has started the final Bonette climb. The first ten kilometres of this climb vary between 3 and 7% gradient, with a majority of the first half at 5-6%. The following 7 km has an average gradient of 7.5%. The final two kilometres have an average gradient of 9% and a maximum gradient of 9.5%.
45km - With 45km to go, Schumacher's gap to the peloton is 12 minutes.
48km - Dumoulin (Cofidis) and Pate (Garmin) struggled on the first tiny ascent that precedes the Bonette and were subsequently dropped from the Cunego-Valjavec group.
48km - Somebody has just asked if Mikel Astarloza is in the virtual yellow jersey. No, because the Euskaltel man, who has been chasing the chasers along with Gilbert and Carrara, is still three minutes behind the Cunego-Valjavec group. If he reaches them, and the gap stays the same, both hugely unlikely ifs, then he would be the maillot jaune.
51km - The Cunego-Valjavec gruppeto is now 5'05" behind Schumacher. The peloton is 11'45" off of the Gerolsteiner rider's pace. With a 6'40" split between the chasers and the peloton, Valjavec (AG2R) is now the virtual yellow jersey after starting the day at 6'27" behind Frank Schleck. Very interesting.....
51km - Here are some of the riders in that 31-man chase group: Popovych (Silence), Arvesen and Voigt (CSC), Txurruka (Euskaltel), Arroyo, Gutierrez and Portal (Caisse d'Epargne), Hincapie and Siutsou (Columbia), Augustyn and Cheula (Barloworld), Fischer (Liquigas), Cunego, Szmyd and Tiralongo (Lampre), Pauriol (Crédit Agricole), Dessel and Valjavec (AG2R), Lequatre (Agritubel), Flecha (Rabobank), Knees (Milram), Casar (FDJeux), Sy.Chavanel, Dumoulin, Moncoutié and Monfort (Cofidis), Hesjedal and Pate (Garmin), Tschopp and Voeckler (Bouygues).
52km - The gap to the Cunego group is six minutes, which means he has more than five and a half minutes on the yellow jersey group. The Italian stands to make up some serious time today....
54km - Cadel Evans had some sort of mechanical problem and was briefly distanced from the peloton.
55km - Gap up to 11'13"
57km - A nasty looking spill for Caisse D'Epargne's Arnaud Coyot of France. David Harmon does his best American accent and says "That's got'to' hurt!" It's "THAT'S GOTTA' HURT!!" David. Coyot doesn't look that bad, though he is gripping the base of his spine after just sliding into the dirt on a particularly steep and swerving section of the descent.
58km - Mike Hutchings was asking whether or not we think Schumacher will stay away. Well, we just walked over and got the opinion of former Tour champion Stephen Roche, who said flatly "no." Rochey added that Schumi would need ten minutes on his rivals heading into this final climb, which he won't likely have, adding that CSC are liable to make up some time prior to the start of this ascent.
63km - Schumacher arrives at the feed zone at Isola for a ride through the short valley up to the final Cime de la Bonette ascent, the highest altitude climb in the Tour de France.
63km - A puncture for Cancellara who needs to change his wheels in the middle of this fast descent. He had been doing much of the work for CSC in the peloton.
65km - Popovych slips on this very fast descent! He is quickly back up and has returned to the chase bunch.
67km - The Cunego group has shrunk to 26.
72km - Cunego's group has just joined the Popovych group.
84km - The peloton goes over the top at 9'20" behind Schumacher.
84km - POINTS AT THE SUMMIT OF THE LOMBARDE: 1. Schumacher (Gerolsteiner) 20 pts, 2. Le Mevel (Crédit Agricole) 18 pts, 3. Voeckler (Bouygues) 16 pts, 4. Popovych (Silence) 14 pts, 5. siutsou (Columbia) 12 pts, 6. Voigt (CSC) 10 pts, 7. Dessel (AG2R) 8 pts
84km - CSC still in charge at the front of the peloton, which nears the summit.
84km - Monfort needs the Cunego group over at 5'12" behind Schumi, who is looking very good on the descent.
84km - Popovych has moved to the front of the chase group to try to take the points as he crosses the summit. And Popo is over first, with the chasers now 4'30" behind Schumacher.
84km - Stefan Schumacher goes over the top of the col de la Lombarde first!
85km - Schumi getting a big boost from the Italian fans as he is within one kilometre of the top of this summit... "Allez, Allez, Allez" they say in their best French accents, as a huge German flag also gets waved right in his face.
86km - Carrara and Giblert have been dropped from the Cunego group.
87km - The peloton is over eight minutes behind Schumacher.
88km - Ronan in Dublin has come up with our favourite prediction so far today: "I think that at the base of Cime de la Bonnette Riccardo Ricco is going to sneak out of bushes by the road side on a stolen child's tricycle and blast his way through everyone right from the back. He'll be staring them all straight in the eyes, hissing, and entirely hepped up on goofballs."
88km - Marky mark is possibly bit premature in his reaction to Cunego's attack: "I knew the boy Cunego would come good! Now if he can just get ten more minutes ahead of the rest before the top of the St. Etienne...." The Lampre leader currently has about 1'40" over the peloton.
88km - Valverde and Menchov are sitting very comfortably in Frank Schleck's yellow jersey group, just so you know.
89km - Regina Reinke has written in her prediction and another dig at Alejandro Valverde: "I have a very good feeling about Menchov. Not that I can see him anywhere at the moment. Where is he? And Oscar Freire is super cool. Where is this useless Valverde? Can't do anything without Pereiro, can he?! I still feel very bad about how Pereiro fell on Sunday :( Speedy recovery for him. Superstar he is. Any idea how long it takes for him to recover?" Pereiro is scheduled to undergo surgery for a fractured arm today so he won't likely be better in time to compete in the Beijing Olympics for Spain.
90km - Gap to the yellow jersey up to 7'30".
91km - Cunego's group has caught and overtaken the green jersey Freire.
92km - The other Chavanel brother, sprinter Sebastien, has abandoned this race on today's first climb. That means that Wim Vansevenant is back in the position of the 'Lanterne Rouge.'
93km - Gap to the peloton from Schumacher is 6'30".
94km - Sorensen and O'Grady are setting the pace at the front of the peloton for CSC, obviously not a very gruelling pace if O'Grady is involved.
96km - The Moncoutie group easily joined the Cunego group, which now contains nine riders, who are 3'50" from Schumacher: Cunego, Valjavec, Szmyd, Pauriol, Moncoutié, Carrara, Weening, Casar and Monfort.
96km - Burghardt and Freire have been dropped from that front chase group.
97km - kevin delaney in Dublin has asked for an honourable mention for his comparison between Damiano Cunego and "Malcolm in the Middle". Sorry Kevin, the "Looky Likey" contest was last week, though I guess this counts as an honourable mention.
98km - Mouncoutie has joined Paurio, Carrera, and Weening, who are closing the gap on the Cunego gruppeto.
98km - Voeckler grabbing a drink from a team bike, as he is distanced by Schumacher, who is now all by his lonesome. Egoi Martinez has attacked.
99km - Le Mevel also dropped from the now two-man lead group of Voeckler and Schumacher, the only two very solid climbers in that group to begin with.
99km - Rosseler was also dropped from that original five-man escape group. The peloton at 5'14" back with the pace being set by CSC.
100km - Valjavec and Monfort join Cunego, Szmyd and Casar..... As we said, interesting.
100km - Interesting..... Sandy Casar and a pair of Lampre boys attack from the peloton.
101km - French sprinter Jimmy Casper is being dropped early on this climb. His French compatriot and stage three victor Dumoulin, meanwhile, has been dropped from the lead group.
102km - The chase group, now at 1'40" behind the leaders, is just going to be slowly strung out as this ascent starts with an incredibly narrow, windy path.
103km - The points back at the VINADIO SPRINT: 1. Dumoulin (Cofidis), 2. Schumacher (Gerolsteiner), 3. Le Mevel (Crédit Agricole.
103km - The average speed in the first hour of riding was 49.2 km/h.
103km - Gap up to 4'25 as the five leaders appraoch the base of the col de la Lombarde (KM72 - HC): 21.5 km at 6.9% average gradient.
107km - Here are the chasers: Popovych, Arvesen, Voigt, Zubeldia, Txurruka, Arroyo, Gutierrez, Portal, Burghardt, Hincapie, Siutsou, Augustyn, Cheulo, Fischer, Tirralongo, Dessel, Flecha, Freire, Gilbert, Chavanel and Pate. Some very dangerous climbers in that group and a bunch of top-20 threats (no real overall threats though).
109km - The gap from the five leaders back to the yellow jersey is already up to 3'45"! The pace really slowing down for the GC leaders at the moment.
113km - Clare in Eire taking a piss out of this blogger's reliance on Fantasy Teams to determine his race favourites: "I'm going to go with Thor Hushovd, predominantly because I had a bet on him for Green and also because he is in my fantasy team. In reality though, I think it'll more likely be Denis Menchov."
114km - Yon in Prague has sent in his prediction: "Seems like people are underestimating Menchov. He looked real good on Sunday and he's going to push for the win today. That's what my head says, but my heart wants to pick our young beast Roman Kreuziger." Kreuziger did much better to stay with the lead bunch on Sunday, and is an outside bet today, but I think your head is probably closer than your heart on this one.
115km - The gap is up to 21 seconds from the five escapees down to a chasing group of about 24 riders, including green jersey Oscar Freire. The main bunch, meanwhile, has slowed down dramatically, with Evans riding at the back.
117km - A very decent five-man attack has found some distance! An imposing group, made of Le Mevel, Rosseler, Schumacher, Voeckler, Dumoulin. The stage 4 time trial winner Schumie is the best placed of the group in 29th at 22'30" off pace.
118km - Menchov was coy when our reporters caught him at the start line today: "I'm feeling rather well. Cycling is like that, I went down on the last climb, but I picked myself up again. We'll see amongst the other favourites what they're going to do, and we'll see how CSC work today. I've got a lot of experience out there and that can help."
120km - Our own pundit Felix Lowe has given us an overall prediction of Denis Menchov. The double Tour of Spain winner looked really good on Sunday's final climb, before slipping and falling in the midst of an attack. He still managed to not lose any time on his main rivals really, and we also think he is now the favourite to win this year's race, slightly ahead of Evans. To read Felix's class column "Blazin' Saddles", paste the below link into your web browser: http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/22072008/58/tour-de-france-blazin-saddles-exterminate-evans.html
121km - Moncoutie and Barredo reigned back in by seven or eight riders, and the peloton not letting this big group get away.
123km - We like both Kohl and Efimkin because we have both in our Fantasy team currently. We would prefer the Austrian and he is our pick for today, to take the stage win and the yellow jersey. To join in the Fantasy Fun (three days left to win that flatscreen TV) just paste the below link into your web browser: http://fantasy.tour-de-france.eurosport.com/default.aspx
124km - Eugene Owen has sent in his pick: "kohl looked very good 2 days ago I will go with him, and for menchov to gain more time on evans; CSC may find sastre and schleck racing one another; as a south african i hope the young jan augustyn does well as both he and barloworld deserve a showing; he has done well so far on most of the climbs and not been too far off the pace"
124km - Some early predictions. Marky Mark, back with us: "If he can stay with the big boys on the last climb I'm gunning for Sammy Sanchez. If not then it might be the day someone like Efimkin sneaks away on the descent and picks up a win."
125km - Barredo is trying to join Moncoutie, but the peloton is very much still in striking distance.
127km - It's well worth noting that it's sunny and warm out there today, and currently at 22 degrees Celsius, it's only expected to get hotter.
130km - After Chavanel's third failed attack, his Cofidis team-mate David Moncoutie went off the front. J A Flecha, meanwhile, is already struggling at the back, while Belgian Christopher Brandt, who has been fighting a stomach bug, is having a word with the medical car.
132km - Marky Mark Cherry is asking: "Do you think there is any hope for Cunego to save a bit of face over the next two days?" I hope so Marky Mark, I've got him in my Fantasy team for GC and originally thought he had a decent bet for a podium place. That obviously shows what I know. I have to say, the way Cunego performed on Sunday tells me he would now be lucky to maintain his 15th placing. If you want to send your predictions for today in, you can email me at jstahl@eurosport.com.
133km - The start of this stage is consistently uphill up until the HC ascent at the Col de la Lombarde, and as Chavanel drops LeLay, the peloton is closing down the attack.
135km - LeLay and Chavanel attack and they now have some margin over the peloton! This could be the day's first successful attack as Chavanel's tenacity could pay off.
135km - Points at the Vignolo intermediate sprint: 1. Hincapie 6pts 2. Tankink 4 pts 3. Chavanel 2 pts.
136km - A handful of riders attack. George Hincapie, Nicolas Portal, a Caisse D'Epargne rider, and Rabobank rider, and a Garmin Chipotle rider.... They are quickly joined by a counter from Bouyges Tel and Credit Agricole. Which means, as usual, nothing is doing. The peloton catches the escapees.
141km - Bill McCarthy has come in with this comment: "In German "schlecht" (which sounds a lot like "Schleck") means bad. So that makes Frank and Andy the Bad Boys of the Tour. I don't think Cadel would argue this. Its just a pity they don't have a brother Nicolas, then he would be Nick Schleck (nicht schlecht) Not bad." Thanks for that one Bill, we will save that for later.
143km - Andy Cripps has written this in: "Do you think its going to be another stage with plenty of action amongst the top 10 riders today or do you think they will all be waiting and biding their time for tomorrow?" I like to think it's going to be a lot like Sunday's stage, with so much to play for in the top-six. I also think that the likes of CSC are going to have to attack Cadel Evans and Denis Menchov if they are to stand any chance of building up enough of a margin to hold off the pair in Sundays time trail. Those two are capable of taking at least two minutes out of their rivals in the ITT.
145km - Here we go. A Lampre man, a Caisse D'Epargne man, and an Euskaltel man are off the front on their own..... But are unable to get any distance really. Fedrigo also tried a stunted attack.
146km - The peloton drive through the beautiful San Lorenzo, as there is a 15-man escape attempt that is really only a few dozen metres in front of the peloton. They are being sucked back in quickly.
146km - Big George Hincapie having a go at joining Barredo's attack, but the peloton is keeping a tight grip on the American. Sylvain Chavanel also trying to get involved again.
146km - An early puncture for Jens Voigt. The German veteran is working his way back into the peloton.
147km - Carlos Barredo tries to go off on his own for Quick Step, and he keeps peering back towards the peloton, obviously hoping that somebody will join him.
149km - An attack from an AG2R rider is followed by FDJ, then Euskaltel, then the rest of the peloton. Nothing doing early on. Sunday's break-away victory for Simon Gerrans still fresh in the peloton's mind.
151km - A Rabobank rider, an FDJ rider, a Caisse D'Epargne rider, a Liquigas rider, and an Euskaltel rider are all travelling in a row to try to push the pace at the front of the peloton as Chavanel was easily caught.
153km - Chavanel keeps pushing it, and there are several attempts from the front of the peloton to try to join his escape. So far the main bunch are shadowing the attacks well.
155km - Cofidis man Sylvain Chavanel tries the day's first attack, a Lampre rider tries to join him, but the peloton is not letting them get away.
156km - AWAY WE GO! Official start given at 12:30 local time.
----- - Overall leader Frank Schleck was not looking at his prospects of winning the race in Paris, focusing more on the joy of wearing the yellow jersey for the first time and todays stage: "Very, very hard that's clear, but it's going to be tough for everybody. Two really, really high climbs over 2,000 metres it's going to be tough. I'm not thinking about [the time trial], I'm just thinking about the yellow jersey, but don't ask me about time difference."
----- - It's worth noting that during that interview Evans pointed to his left shoulder and said that the cold weather at Prato Nevoso on Sunday upset the muscle he had hurt on stage nine in the Pyrenees. The Austrailan says he feels fine today, but the we'll be watching out for that.
----- - Cadel Evans preferred his rest day on Monday to the first one: "A little bit less stressful than the last one, being in yellow for the first time brings a little bit more media attention. When you're running for GC it's always preferable not to lose time. CSC have strength in numbers, but we'll see how they ride today. For me it's such a long race, three weeks, even if you are nervous you get too tired to be nervous by the end of it."
11:20 - The "depart fictif" or roll-out to the official start was given at 12:20 local time in Cuneo, Italy.
----- - Our reporters also caught up with Vandevelde at today's start line: "It is hard and it affects everyone differently, everyone has different sensations, it's almost like there's a barrier over 2,000 metres [altitude] people change. I'm not so bad, I'm still within 40 seconds of the yellow jersey, so I'm really happy with how things are going so far and we'll see how things go in the time trial. It's a bit of a disadvantage [for Evans and me to be alone fighting CSC], but at the same time they have to drop us and they have to put time into us right now. We're in the driver's seat."
----- - Christian Vandevelde spoke to our reporters during the rest day. The American is pleased to be within one minute of the yellow jersey: "My climbing is coming along quite well and if I continue to ride like I did at Hautacam I'll be quite pleased. I've always been a decent climber, but I've always been working for someone else."
----- - Oscar Freire is doing well to survive the mountains and is hoping to wear his green jersey all the way to Paris. The Spaniard from Rabobank (219 pts) has 47 pts over Thor Hushovd (Crédit Agricole) and 52 over Erik Zabel (Milram).
----- - Second in the GC, Bernhard Kohl does own the polka dot jersey. With 85 points, the Austrian is ahead of Gerolsteiner team-mate Sebastian Lang (60 pts) and Euskaltel's Egoi Martinez (50 pts).
----- - Today would be the day to put your neck out on the line and pick the overall winner. Stephen Roche almost does so, backing Cadel Evans to get the yellow jersey back, but then quickly reneges, telling Tony Gibb, "maybe you're right Tony," when he picks Denis Menchov. We actually agree personally with the British cyclist.
----- - After CSC's display of strength over the weekend at Prato Nevoso and a rest day on Monday, Frank Schleck spends his first day in the yellow jersey. The Luxembourg will be seriously tested by Austrian Bernhard Kohl (Gerolsteiner), who is only 7 seconds off pace and previous leader Cadel Evans (Silence-Lotto) who is 8 seconds back. It's worth noting that the top six riders are within 49 seconds.
----- - Today's stage starts at 11:30 BST. Featuring two out of category climbs, stage 16 is one of the most difficult tests of this year's race. At the 72.5-km mark the peloton reaches the summit of the Col de la Lombarde, a 21.5-km climb at an average gradient of 6.9%. Then with 23.5-km left to race the riders reach the top of the Cime de la Bonette-Restefond, a 25.5-km climb at 6.5% average gradient. Ouch.
----- - Welcome to our LIVE text comments and timing of this critical 16th stage to the Tour de France. The final maillot jaune could very well likely be decided in the next two days, as Tuesday's 157-km trip from Cuneo to Jausier should separate the contenders from the pretenders.
Live Comments
16:18 -
Thanks for joining us, and come back tomorrow for potentially decisive fireworks on the legendary L'Alpe-D'Huez.
16:16 -
The new GC: 1.
0km -
CYRIL DESSEL WINS IT!!
16km -
Popovych, Arroyo, Casar and Dessel are still leading the race, with the yellow jersey bunch at 1'44" back.
Siutsou, 8. Portal, 9. Schumacher
18km -
Gap down 1'38".
23km -
AUGUSTYN ATTACKS!! The South African from Barloworld makes a move for the points, or maybe more, about a half a kilometre from the summit!
24km -
One kilometre to the summit for the leaders, with 2'07" in hand......
24km -
Maxime Monfort being taken in by the yellow jersey group. Nibali and Kreuziger are not there though, so there could be a change in the white jersey classification.
24km -
Gap down to 2'30".
24km - Voigt is doing a turn at the front of the yellow jersey group, as Chris Froome is being passed by the yellow jersey.
25km - Jens Voigt has fallen back to the yellow jersey group, and is now feeding his CSC team-mates with water.
25km -
Valverde makes a move, but Sastre and Kohl easily follow him, Kim Kirchen is being distanced and Kohl counter-attacks....
27km -
Dessel overtakes Schumacher, who could still stay with this lead group who could contest the stage if they can hold off the yellow jersey long enough. The gap to the big boys is 3'22". No one considering an attack in the yellow jersey group, with L'Alpe-D'Huez still to come tomorrow.
27km - Astarloza has now been caught by the yellow jersey group.
27km -
Gap from Schumacher to the peloton is 3'50".
30km -
Gap to Valjavec group is 30 seconds, and to the yellow jersey is 4'30".
31km - 9 chasers at 40" behind Schumacher: Hincapie (Silence), Portal (Caisse d'Epargne), Hincapie and Siutsou (Columbia), Augustyn (Barloworld), Dessel and Valjavec (AG2R), Casar (FDJeux). Cunego is 1'10" back.
32km -
Kim Kirchen has managed to stay with the group of favourites along with Evans, Sastre, the Schleck brothers, Samuel Sanchez, Valverde, Kohl, and Menchov. But Vandevelde and Efimkin have both been dropped!
32km -
Former yellow jersey wearer (2006) Cyril Dessel is working incredibly hard for Valjavec right now!
38km -
Haimar Zubeldia is being distanced now as is Philippe Gilbert. The heat has to start playing a factor at this point.
39km -
The gap between the yellow jersey and Schumacher is 9'24".
44km -
Lots of guys already falling off the peloton at the base of this climb. Hushovd is gone, along with several others.
45km -
Schumacher has started the final Bonette climb. The first ten kilometres of this climb vary between 3 and 7% gradient, with a majority of the first half at 5-6%. The following 7 km has an average gradient of 7.5%. The final two kilometres have an average gradient of 9% and a maximum gradient of 9.5%.
45km -
With 45km to go, Schumacher's gap to the peloton is 12 minutes.
48km -
Dumoulin (Cofidis) and Pate (Garmin) struggled on the first tiny ascent that precedes the Bonette and were subsequently dropped from the Cunego-Valjavec group.
51km -
The Cunego-Valjavec gruppeto is now 5'05" behind Schumacher.
55km -
Gap up to 11'13"
57km -
A nasty looking spill for Caisse D'Epargne's Arnaud Coyot of France.
63km -
A puncture for Cancellara who needs to change his wheels in the middle of this fast descent. He had been doing much of the work for CSC in the peloton.
65km -
Popovych slips on this very fast descent! He is quickly back up and has returned to the chase bunch.
67km - The Cunego group has shrunk to 26.
72km - Cunego's group has just joined the Popovych group.
84km -
The peloton goes over the top at 9'20" behind Schumacher.
84km -
POINTS AT THE SUMMIT OF THE LOMBARDE: 1. Schumacher (Gerolsteiner) 20 pts, 2. Le Mevel (Crédit Agricole) 18 pts, 3. Voeckler (Bouygues) 16 pts, 4. Popovych (Silence) 14 pts, 5. siutsou (Columbia) 12 pts, 6. Voigt (CSC) 10 pts, 7. Dessel (AG2R) 8 pts
84km -
CSC still in charge at the front of the peloton, which nears the summit.
84km -
Monfort needs the Cunego group over at 5'12" behind Schumi, who is looking very good on the descent.
86km -
Carrara and Giblert have been dropped from the Cunego group.
87km -
The peloton is over eight minutes behind Schumacher.
88km -
Ronan in Dublin has come up with our favourite prediction so far today: "I think that at the base of Cime de la Bonnette Riccardo Ricco is going to sneak out of bushes by the road side on a stolen child's tricycle and blast his way through everyone right from the back. He'll be staring them all straight in the eyes, hissing, and entirely hepped up on goofballs."
88km -
Marky mark is possibly bit premature in his reaction to Cunego's attack: "I knew the boy Cunego would come good! Now if he can just get ten more minutes ahead of the rest before the top of the St. Etienne...." The Lampre leader currently has about 1'40" over the peloton.
88km - Valverde and Menchov are sitting very comfortably in Frank Schleck's yellow jersey group, just so you know.
89km -
Regina Reinke has written in her prediction and another dig at Alejandro Valverde: "I have a very good feeling about Menchov.
90km -
Gap to the yellow jersey up to 7'30".
91km - Cunego's group has caught and overtaken the green jersey Freire.
92km -
The other Chavanel brother, sprinter Sebastien, has abandoned this race on today's first climb. That means that Wim Vansevenant is back in the position of the 'Lanterne Rouge.'
93km -
Gap to the peloton from Schumacher is 6'30".
100km -
Interesting.....
103km -
The points back at the VINADIO SPRINT: 1. Dumoulin (Cofidis), 2. Schumacher (Gerolsteiner), 3. Le Mevel (Crédit Agricole.
103km -
The average speed in the first hour of riding was 49.2 km/h.
103km -
Gap up to 4'25 as the five leaders appraoch the base of the col de la Lombarde (KM72 - HC): 21.5 km at 6.9% average gradient.
107km -
Here are the chasers: Popovych, Arvesen, Voigt, Zubeldia, Txurruka, Arroyo, Gutierrez, Portal, Burghardt, Hincapie, Siutsou, Augustyn, Cheulo, Fischer, Tirralongo, Dessel, Flecha, Freire, Gilbert, Chavanel and Pate. Some very dangerous climbers in that group and a bunch of top-20 threats (no real overall threats though).
109km -
The gap from the five leaders back to the yellow jersey is already up to 3'45"! The pace really slowing down for the GC leaders at the moment.
113km -
Clare in Eire taking a piss out of this blogger's reliance on Fantasy Teams to determine his race favourites: "I'm going to go with Thor Hushovd, predominantly because I had a bet on him for Green and also because he is in my fantasy team.
115km -
The gap is up to 21 seconds from the five escapees down to a chasing group of about 24 riders, including green jersey Oscar Freire. The main bunch, meanwhile, has slowed down dramatically, with Evans riding at the back.
117km -
A very decent five-man attack has found some distance! An imposing group, made of Le Mevel, Rosseler, Schumacher, Voeckler, Dumoulin. The stage 4 time trial winner Schumie is the best placed of the group in 29th at 22'30" off pace.
118km -
Menchov was coy when our reporters caught him at the start line today: "I'm feeling rather well.
124km -
Some early predictions.
127km -
It's well worth noting that it's sunny and warm out there today, and currently at 22 degrees Celsius, it's only expected to get hotter.
130km -
After Chavanel's third failed attack, his Cofidis team-mate David Moncoutie went off the front. J A Flecha, meanwhile, is already struggling at the back, while Belgian Christopher Brandt, who has been fighting a stomach bug, is having a word with the medical car.
132km -
Marky Mark Cherry is asking: "Do you think there is any hope for Cunego to save a bit of face over the next two days?" I hope so Marky Mark, I've got him in my Fantasy team for GC and originally thought he had a decent bet for a podium place.
135km -
LeLay and Chavanel attack and they now have some margin over the peloton! This could be the day's first successful attack as Chavanel's tenacity could pay off.
135km -
Points at the Vignolo intermediate sprint: 1.
141km -
Bill McCarthy has come in with this comment: "In German "schlecht" (which sounds a lot like "Schleck") means bad. So that makes Frank and Andy the Bad Boys of the Tour. I don't think Cadel would argue this. Its just a pity they don't have a brother Nicolas, then he would be Nick Schleck (nicht schlecht) Not bad." Thanks for that one Bill, we will save that for later.
143km -
Andy Cripps has written this in: "Do you think its going to be another stage with plenty of action amongst the top 10 riders today or do you think they will all be waiting and biding their time for tomorrow?" I like to think it's going to be a lot like Sunday's stage, with so much to play for in the top-six.
146km -
An early puncture for Jens Voigt. The German veteran is working his way back into the peloton.
147km -
Carlos Barredo tries to go off on his own for Quick Step, and he keeps peering back towards the peloton, obviously hoping that somebody will join him.
149km -
An attack from an AG2R rider is followed by FDJ, then Euskaltel, then the rest of the peloton.
155km -
Cofidis man Sylvain Chavanel tries the day's first attack, a Lampre rider tries to join him, but the peloton is not letting them get away.
156km -
AWAY WE GO! Official start given at 12:30 local time.

Overall leader Frank Schleck was not looking at his prospects of winning the race in Paris, focusing more on the joy of wearing the yellow jersey for the first time and todays stage: "Very, very hard that's clear, but it's going to be tough for everybody. Two really, really high climbs over 2,000 metres it's going to be tough. I'm not thinking about [the time trial], I'm just thinking about the yellow jersey, but don't ask me about time difference."

It's worth noting that during that interview Evans pointed to his left shoulder and said that the cold weather at Prato Nevoso on Sunday upset the muscle he had hurt on stage nine in the Pyrenees. The Austrailan says he feels fine today, but the we'll be watching out for that.
----- -
Cadel Evans preferred his rest day on Monday to the first one: "A little bit less stressful than the last one, being in yellow for the first time brings a little bit more media attention.

Our reporters also caught up with Vandevelde at today's start line: "It is hard and it affects everyone differently, everyone has different sensations, it's almost like there's a barrier over 2,000 metres [altitude] people change.
----- -
Christian Vandevelde spoke to our reporters during the rest day. The American is pleased to be within one minute of the yellow jersey: "My climbing is coming along quite well and if I continue to ride like I did at Hautacam I'll be quite pleased. I've always been a decent climber, but I've always been working for someone else."

Oscar Freire is doing well to survive the mountains and is hoping to wear his green jersey all the way to Paris. The Spaniard from Rabobank (219 pts) has 47 pts over Thor Hushovd (Crédit Agricole) and 52 over Erik Zabel (Milram).
----- -
Second in the GC, Bernhard Kohl does own the polka dot jersey. With 85 points, the Austrian is ahead of Gerolsteiner team-mate Sebastian Lang (60 pts) and Euskaltel's Egoi Martinez (50 pts).

Today would be the day to put your neck out on the line and pick the overall winner. Stephen Roche almost does so, backing Cadel Evans to get the yellow jersey back, but then quickly reneges, telling Tony Gibb, "maybe you're right Tony," when he picks Denis Menchov. We actually agree personally with the British cyclist.

After CSC's display of strength over the weekend at Prato Nevoso and a rest day on Monday, Frank Schleck spends his first day in the yellow jersey.

Today's stage starts at 11:30 BST. Ouch.

Welcome to our LIVE text comments and timing of this critical 16th stage to the Tour de France. The final maillot jaune could very well likely be decided in the next two days, as Tuesday's 157-km trip from Cuneo to Jausier should separate the contenders from the pretenders.
