  1. 0km - THREE STAGE WINS FOR MARK CAVENDISH!! It was a clean sprint between the Brit and Alessandro Petacchi and after bursting clear with 300m to go, Cav holds off his rival by nearly a bike's length. Davis, Robbie Hunter and Farrar complete the top five.

  2. 1km - They negotiate a tight left-hander and Millar leads a strung out bunch under the Flamme Rouge.

  3. 3km - A massive effort by Bradley Wiggins and David Millar as they lead the Garmin train for Farrar.

  4. 5km - Quick Step have now come to the front for Aussie speedster Davis.

  5. 7km - It is all over for Schroeder!

  6. 10km - The gap is down to 37 seconds - a brave effort from the Berliner but the bunch look to have it in control.

  7. 15km - Michael Barry is something of an engine on the front of the peloton, the Canadian has reduced the deficit to 1:17.

  8. 20km - Schroeder continues to plug away but with a lead of just 1:29 he has no hope of staying out in front to the end.

  9. 25km - Ignatiev and Scarselli have been swallowed up by the fast moving bunch.

  10. 30km - Schroeder has left the other two escapees.

  11. 35km - Sebastien Hinault, Robert Forster, JJ Haedo, Oscar Gatto, Francesco Gavazzi, Dario Cataldo and Philippe Gilbert are likely to be in the mix but are each-way bets.

  12. 40km - Who will rival Cavendish in a sprint? Farrar has already been mentioned and of course Alessandro Petacchi.

  13. 45km - Garmin are doing some work on the front now and the gap is down to three minutes,

  14. 50km - Scarselli won the TV sprint at Santa Croce sull'Arno ahead of Ignatiev and Schroeder.

  15. 55km - There is a short, steep climb outside Castelfranco di Sotto but Cavendish's henchmen continue to set a decent tempo.

  16. 60km - The gap is now down to four minutes.

  17. 65km - Cavendish will have a rival in Tyler Farrar today. Tom Danielson tweeted earlier: "Today is a good one for Tyler. Gonna work my butt of to make sure he has a shot at the W."

  18. 70km - Irishman Dan Martin was second at the Tour of Catalunya yesterday. Stage report

  19. 75km - 44.9 kmh was the speed in the second hour, the stage should finish around 16:00 UK time at this rate.

  20. 80km - Lucca is situated on the river Serchio in a fertile plain near Ligurian Sea. It is the capital city of the Province of Lucca. It is famous for its intact Renaissance-era city walls.

  21. 85km - After the long descent, the leaders are back on the flat roads of Lucca.

  22. 90km - Team Columbia-Highroad are doing the work on the front to pull back the breakaway for Cavendish with the gap reaching a peak of 5:20.

  25. 105km - The gap was 4:45 at the summit of the cat 3 climb and now the riders have a gradual descent, heading inland.

  26. 110km - The leaders have passed the only climb of the day in Montemagno, just outside Pisa. A 3.1km climb which goes up 130 meters with an average gradient of 4.2%.

  27. 115km - On GC, Ignatiev is 61st at 7.53, Schroeder 82nd at 9.18 and Scarselli 95th at 9.43.

  28. 120km - The riders are just about to pass Camaiore for the second time before they head south east.

  29. 125km - A rapid 46.1km was covered in the opening hour. The gap remains at four minutes with the sprinters' teams keeping a lid on the breakaway.

  30. 130km - 28-year-old Schroeder of Milram notched his biggest win at the Bayern Rundfahrt in 2006. He is from Berlin.

  31. 135km - Ignatiev of Katusha won the gold medal in the points race at the Athens Olympics. On the road, Ignatiev came to prominence in 2005 he became the world under-23 time trial champion. He won five races for Tinkoff in 2007.

  32. 140km - ISD's Leonardo Scarselli, whose biggest claim to fame is his overall victory in the 2003 Tour of Senegal, went on a solo attack for nearly 100 kilometres of stage two. He is 34 and has previously been a member of the Selle Italia and Quick Step team.

  33. 145km - The lead of our three escapees is now 4:15.

  34. 150km - All change on the GC after yesterday with the top three separated by just 40 seconds and Lance Armstrong is eyeing the top ten. General Classification

  35. 155km - Britain's Mark Cavendish won the 11th stage of the Giro d'Italia, his second victory in this year's race but he has had an inauspicious start today where he has every chance of making it three. He fell along with Yohann Gene in the opening stages but no damage and they are back on their bikes.

  36. 160km - We have an early escape and Leonardo Scarselli, Mikhail Ignatiev and Bjorn Schröder have built up a minute lead.

  39. 176km - Today's sprinter-friendly 13th stage of the Giro d'Italia in picturesque Tuscany takes the 186 riders on a 176km course from Lido di Camaiore to Florence. The stage began at 12:15 local time.
