hello chaps. just a few questions. i got into cycling in a big way in 86/87 and remember the 'train' being dominated by a team in green whose sprinter was van poppel (i think) but i can't remember the name of the team. sean must. Also, when did they stop using the combined jersey which i remember jean franscois bernard wearing? and, what happened to him? i raced for shirley roads club for a couple of years (hello to anyone who remembers me) and now live in greece. still ride my bike along the coast in winter which must be on of the best routes in europe - 1 hour and rarely see a car, or touch brakes. i'm an english teacher here so now loving my 3 month summer holiday - the highlight of which is your tdf coverage after my morning swim. i always wake my 5 yr old son, gregory who's just started riding without stabilizers, from his siesta to watch the last 20 km so he'd love it if you could say hello. he's a big contador fan and last night drew a picture to send him but i can't find a postal address anywhere. any ideas? thanks for everything - summer wouldn't be the same without you.
@malipas92: If the yellow jersey holder also leads the points or mountain classification, then the green or polkadot jersey is worn by the second in line in the respective catagory. This was the case in the first stage when Fabian Cancellara held both the leader's and points' jerseys. Tony Martin wore the green jersey as second placed in the points ranking.
As faithfully I follow you every year - I didn't notice the answer to my question : if any og the jerseys awarded matches the winner of the yellow jersey - who is carying the pockadot or green for the next stage ?
#142, based on the live audio of the race, Contador never led that breakaway, so he can't really be blamed for the Schleck brothers gaining time. Of course he could have taken the lead, then pedaled slowly. What hurt Armstrong more, was having to give up that first attempt to catch up, half way up that last climb, when Wiggins followed. Don't know whether that was his decision or his director's, but if he had kept going then, instead of waiting till near the top, he might have been in second now.
Contador Astana team has done evil. By making unnecessary attacks on the 16.stage, therefore Schleck and his brother were taken by Contador against to Kloden and Amstrong . This was not done the wrong time against the stage at the end of yesterday's general Amstron ranked second, third was Kloden. This is evil for Astana . Contador was selfish act. This is a violation of team solidarity.
Dont make me laugh, no Jens'i'm outta the race'Voigt and Dennis" I cant stay on my bike' Menchov they equal OVERRATED! At least Cadel is still in the race. Take a good look at the coverage, none of them Euro losers are their. :))
And in NASCAR Mark Martin has 4 wins and sits eleventh in standings, while Juan Pablo Montoya has no wins, not even a top five but sits ninth overall, which rankles some fans of that sport too
#ian.andrews5 -so why are you even here if you find cycling so objectionable? What you describe as faults are the strengths of Cycling and on the contrary, the rules, like the rules of Chess, are easy to understand and complicated in a good strategic way. It's perfectly understandable that despite your verbosity, you find Cycling too difficult to understand and follow and there's no shame in that. Indeed, there are sports and activities that probably fit you much better and I'm sure they have forums and discussion boards. Cycling is quite exciting, the Tour has always been a drama filled test of strength and endurance unlike any other sport. It's a shame you can't see that. Or perhaps you were just Trolling? Yesterday Thor drove up the last hill and picked up a win and is now a point behind Cavendish in the Sprinters Green Jersey competition, the King of the Mountain Jersey changed hands and will change hands again, the Yellow will likely be out of Fabian's grip at the end of today's race but who will come out on top? Pretty darn exciting to my mind.
Of course it happens in motorsport, it's all about consistency. In motorsport, motogp for example, 10 5th places will always beat 2 1st places plus 8 10th places; it's a team sport that requires tactics to win.
How curiously old fashioned and arcane races like the Tour de France are! They must be the only type of race series where someone can win a high proportion of the stages (as Mark Cavendish has to date), yet appear way down in the classement general. It wouldn't happen in motor sport, for instance. It means that some cyclists (even winners) can get round the whole race simply by ensuring they are tucked away in some part of the peloton that gets a nominal timing at each stage. We have the technology to make the whole race a time trial - each cyclist already has a transponder, so his exact finishing time can be recorded. Simply start the race clock when the last man has crossed the start line. Knock off the last five or ten at each stage. Much more transparent, much more competitive, much more entertaining and much fairer. Tour cycling has enough trouble holding its audience without such a weird and unfathomable ranking system. Let's face it, a lot of the time, if it weren't for the scenery, the racing is pretty tedious. And even the scenery can be boring sometimes. No wonder the commentators digress so much...........are they bored too at times?
Got £25 each way on Yaroslav Popovych at 150/1. I know he won't win the Tour De France, as he has to be a donkey for Armstrong and Contador, but he can excel in the mountains if doesn't have to do too much work for them. Good rider in his own right, and podium prospects in Paris.

To cycle part of a Tour stage route the same day as the riders, what time do you have to be on the route? How many hours before the riders come?

to #132: I will second these comments! You gotta love it!

unbelievable! i didn't see any efforts from the big names to catch the break away.
I think Mark Cavendish don't win this stage.
My favourite is Lance Armstrong.
