Southampton defender Claus Lundekvam has announced his retirement from the game after losing the battle to overcome a long-standing ankle injury.
The 35-year-old former Norway international underwent surgery on his ankle last week and was hoping to return to training this month, but a recurrence of the problem has forced him to admit defeat and hang up his boots.
"This is it for me, it's game over. It's very sad, but it hasn't really sunk in yet," he told BBC radio.
"I've prepared myself for this situation slightly over the last few weeks after a snapped the tendon in my ankle," he said.
"But it's very difficult to come to terms with. Maybe once the season is finished and the players have gone I'll find it hard to deal with."
Lundekvam - who won 38 international caps - made 357 league appearances for the Saints since joining from Brann in 1996.

Best wishes to the original DNH (do no harm) defender.

If I remember correctly, this guy was not a great fantasy player. At least not 4-5 years ago.

Posted by: jspitzberg on Tue Mar 25 04:19PM | Report abuseThis man was a fantasy God. Period. Usually cost one unit/euro/dollar/whatev and while he never really got any points, he was never in the negatives either. Unlike these days where we spend twice as much on moko (or similar), then spend the weekend praying he never sees the pitch or else it is a yellow card/-3 performance. Claus was the original DNH and he will be missed. Farewell Claus.
Posted by: mikelanglais on Tue Mar 25 05:06PM | Report abuseI did not read the DNH part. Lundekvam's days were my first in EPL Fantasy. I probably didn't appreciate his meager contribution for the price, like I would now. He was on that team with Ormerod, Beattie and Fabrice Fernandes, right? back in those days, I would just stick with Christian Ziege until he got a red card.
