Jol Hoping Lennon Can Play On

Tottenham boss Martin Jol is sweating on the long-term fitness of England winger Aaron Lennon as he battles to overcome a recurring knee complaint.

Lennon sat out Sunday's 2-1 Barclays Premiership win at Manchester City as a precautionary measure after some inflammation was detected by club doctors.

Lennon has already undergone an operation in a bid to correct the problem and Jol hopes his latest setback is a minor one which will soon be overcome with Spurs facing Southend in the Carling Cup on Wednesday.

Jol said: "Aaron had an operation in August and had (the problem) again, so it was better to rest him today. It comes and goes so hopefully he will be fit for Wednesday."

Jol sang the praises of teenager Tom Huddlestone, who set up Calum Davenport's opener then grabbed his own first Premiership goal with a crashing 25th-minute volley.

Jol said: "Tom does not show a lack of ambition because he wants to be the best all the time and that is a good characteristic. He is developing and growing.

"He is really experienced because he played over 100 games for Derby before he was 18. I told him before the start of the season he would play a lot of matches for us this season."

So Lennon can't play too many games in a row without damaging his knee.  Jenas is increasingly found on the sidelines.  Malbranque is just coming back from injury.  Tainio is in and out of the treatment room.  Davids is 90 years old.  Zokora is susceptible to exotic, tropical illnesses.  And Ghaly is sure to find himself suspended for many more games.

So even though Spurs have someone on the bench that they claim is Danny Murphy, I think THud gets a lot of games over the rest of the season.  And as he's a middie listed as a sub-$6 defender and takes kicks... well, I think it will be worth holding on to him.
