His conclusions were, "About all I got out of this was 1) Jeremy is a bit of a goalkeeper slut (both in terms of volume over the course of the season and, with the exception of a string of Given matches in the middle, the frequency of changing partners); 2) his goalkeeper picks were rubbish on the whole (though it would be nice to compare his GK points to others to see to what degree); and we should all pay attention to his random not-Paintsil/not-Bosingwa defender choice since while they also changed often, he managed to get quite a few of them on good weeks. "

To which Neal replied...

"Hmm, what isn't figured into Given being in the Top 10 in Played but not in the Top 10 in Scoring is the cost to have him for those weeks :-) Even if he, himself, wasn't doing great business for you, was he enabling points from another position because you had him for 2 or less for much of the season?

"Perhaps the reason that some of those random defender picks were so successful was that you had the money to go after the right guy as opposed to be shackled into a slightly-better-than-Given keeper + Mok or Givet or Olsson...

"Just saying..."

 ---

Good points.  I would say that they got it pretty much right.   However, I would add that I was slow to pick up on this year's dearth of striking options and emphasis on defence and goals from midfield.  It will be interesting to see if that continues into next season.

But before then, a quick end of season award show:

Fantasy surprise of the Season...Zaki in the first half; Brunt in the second half

(Fantasy) Newcomer of the Year...Robinho in the first half; Arshavin in the second half

Disappointment (non-injury division)...tie between K2, Keane, Berbs and Tevez

Disappointment (injury division)...Nando, Cesc, Arteta, Jummy, SWP

In Dire Need of a New Home/Regular Place... the Spurs Gaggle of Bale, THud, Bentley, DBent

Quiet Fall from Grace - Carvalho (weren't people talking about him as the best defender in the Prem as recently as last season now he's behind Alex - fill in own joke including the words "Alex" and "behind")

Back from the Dead Award - Danny Murphy, SWP

Best Michael Owen impression (where you know he's injured and prone to injury, but buy/keep him anyway in the hopes that it will all get better) - Michael Owen

Worst Michael Owen impression - Woodgate, because he did get better and is now a solid performer

And since the Back from the Dead category already exists, for nomination to the Brains, Brains, Brains division - Beattie for once again resurfacing.  Kevin Phillips can't be too far behind. [ed. note:  if WBA had been smarter, KP would have been in the division.  And who knows, maybe they still would be too.]

Enjoy today's big final, and have a great summer.  We'll be posting over at the fantasy premier league summer home.  Hopefully we'll see you there.

Until then, thanks for reading, commenting, and making this fantasy season a great experience!

  5. By the way, thanks for the wrap-up. I thought that when I won my league the fireworks and champagne would be enough satisfaction but this final posting provides me with the closure I need until September.

September??? The premiership may have played 2 or 3 games by then.

Us football league supporters kick-off 8th August, and the premiership is normally a week later.
