The Fantasist

Sign Silvestre. No, really...

Wed Nov 18 04:34PM

The Fantasist was not the only one to get excited by Kieran Gibbs's potential after Gael Clichy went down with a back injury.

Arsenal man Gibbs, we said, had until Christmas to prove his worthiness for an England call-up.

Well, his window of opportunity has slammed shut following a suspected broken metatarsal playing for England Under-21s. Fantasy bosses can safely ditch the poor chap.

So who is going to play left-back with Clichy and Gibbs both out?

Well, the smart money has to be on Mikael Silvestre (7.11), who played there extensively in his days as a Manchester United player. The only drawback? He's rubbish.

Another alternative is Emmanuel Eboue (6.60), who is versatile enough to bring his brand of slightly-better-than-OK football to any position Arsene Wenger chooses. He is listed as a midfielder, therefore not worthy of consideration.

The other man in the squad with experience playing left-back is one William Gallas (9.88) - and he was rather good at it in his Chelsea days.

He's a long shot, though, because the last time he was played out of position for any length of time he ended up threatening to score own goals.

Barring any setbacks this week, Steven Gerrard (21.00) will play against Manchester City this weekend.

He's not cheap, but given Liverpool's reliance on Gerrard and Fernando Torres he's bound to put up some points.

  1. I like your thinking, but Arsenal are leaking too many goal atm, but fair enough they're scoring even more. If you missed out on Verm, forget it. Better off going for Fabs, or Arshvin. With Van da Man out for a bit, they should get more points. Or course the best VFM is Eds, he could turn out to be the next Drogs, but I don't think they'll roll over Sunderland, so I'll probably BD him.

  2. Firstly, Gibbs doesn't have a break. Secondly, I would give Troare a shot at left back.

  9. vermaelen can play as a left back anyway so why not give him a go. He is good in attacking position. clichy, traore and gibbs will miss. senderos or silvestre will pair up with gallas then.
