Cerny fears final axe

Wed Feb 20 04:26PM by Jeremy

Radek Cerny's blunder in the 2-1 UEFA Cup win at Slavia Prague has left the Tottenham goalkeeper fearing for his place in the team ahead of the Carling Cup final against Chelsea next weekend.

Cerny dropped a hanging cross against Slavia Prague to allow his former club back into the UEFA Cup last-32 tie, the error inadvertently bringing Paul Robinson back into the spotlight.

Robinson was dropped last month and Cerny had barely put a foot wrong until his return to the Strahov Stadium, with head coach Juande Ramos admitting that he saw nervousness from his current first-choice stopper after Slavia's goal.

Next week's second leg at White Hart Lane is the only match to rebuild confidence before the Wembley showpiece against Chelsea when Spurs look to end their nine-year trophy drought.

I'm guessing this is nothing but the press looking for a story where there probably isn't one.  But...

If there's a chance we will have Robbo available as a cheaper keeper on an improving Spurs side then it's a story I'm going to follow as well.  Spurs play Chelsea in the Carling Cup final this weekend, rather than in the league, so we're probably stuck with Captain Kirk (home to Derby) or whatever cheaper keeper we're sitting on at the moment.  For me that's Gordon.  But we'll see who Ramos' number one is come Thursday then again on Sunday.
