    • Malawi
    • Algeria
    • 90+4 The referee puts Algeria out of their self-enforced misery, Malawi get their first win at the tournament and Algeria are humiliated. 3-0!
    • 90+3 Gezzal races down the right but can't keep the ball in. The Algeria fans, all 200 of them it seems, cannot believe what they are seeing.
    • 90+2 Malawi could have a chance on the counter here but are happy to run it into the corner. Kamwendo wins a throw, he's had a great game, running around like a dreadlocked wasp and giving Bougherra a torrid time.
    • 90' Four minutes added time being played.
    • 88' Algeria have kept the ball at least for these latter stages but they lack any kind of final ball and drive to pull one back.
    • 86' There'll be no Mali-esque comeback here: Algeria look like they can't be bothered. Before the tournament I was a touch concerned they'd view this as a diversion from the summer's main event in South Africa, but the lack of pride in the shirt today has been quite remarkable.
    • 84' Yebda wide to Belhadj who puts in a testing ball but good defending from Chavula to nod away with green shirts lining up to finish.

    • 82' Ziani is booked for a late challenge.
    • 80' The Malawi keeper is booked for time wasting.
    • 78' Yebda has a long-range shot, blocked but Ziayi can touch it into the path of Belhadj but he smashes it well over.
    • 76' Mansouri plays it low in for Ghezzal but Malawi have strength in numbers and clear.
    • 75' Malawi win a corner after a dangerous counter attack. Half-cleared and drops to Bougherra, they appeal for handball but nothing given, he panics and shanks the clearance but Malawi don't make him pay and the Algerians clear.
    • 74' Ghezzal leads a counter attack, playing it wide but the cross is poor, Sangala - back on the pitch - heads away. Still with Algeria though, swung in by Yebda AND THE KEEPER MISSES IT AND ZIAYI MUST SCORE but it flies just past him!
    • 73' Corner to Malawi now on the left, Wadabwa takes an age to deliver, cleared at the near post.
    • 72' Should have been 4-0! Shocking keeping from Chaouchi after a weak shot from Wadabwa, spilling it into the path of Msowoya, who heads it inches wide!
    • 70' Sangala is dazed after getting a whack on the head, eventually it's put out of play.
    • 69' Msowoya, oddly wearing the no. 4 shirt despite being a striker, is clearly offside when played through but carries on anyway.
    • 68' Malawi threaten to counter from that corner but Bougherra is back. Ziani lofts it in for Bezzaz who flicks it on with style for Ghezzal but his route is blocked by a sea of red and Malawi clear.
    • 67' Yebda finds Ziani, who threads Ziaya in but his cross is off Sangala for a corner.
    • 66' Bezzaz puts in a tasty cross and ZIAYA FLIES IN WITH THE HEADER BUT OVER! He should have scored, he was unmarked!
    • 65' That was an erroneous announcement from the organisers, by the way - the Algeria keeper has NOT come off. Bezzaz the forward is on for Matmour.
    • 64' MALAWI SUB: Chiukepo Msowoya, top scorer with six in qualifying, comes on.
    • 62' ALGERIA SUBS: Ziaya comes on for Saifi and I think the keeper is coming off too. Yes, Chaouchi - who has had a shocker - is replaced by Zemmamouche.
    • 60' Ghezzal tries to run through but a combination of Kofoteka and Chavula force him off the ball. He wants a penalty but the ref is happy with the challenge.
    • 58' Saifi sliding in almost makes contact with a through ball but harmlessly back with the keeper.
    • 57' The corner is swung over by Ziani, and the keeper flaps awfully again and Ghezzal flies in but the whistle goes, handball by the Siena man.
    • 56' This is not good for Malawi, poor Sanudi is on the deck after that nasty fall. He seems okay now though, some magic water sorted him out.
    • 55' Good cross in from Belhadj on the right, Sanudi does well this time to palm it away with bodies flying in but he's hurt, he landed heavily on his shoulder.
    • 54' Corner to Algeria on the right, swung in and the keeper again comes and barely makes contact but Malawi survive.
    • 52' Yebda and Bougherra combine on the right, the former loops a hopeful cross on to the roof of the net.
    • 51' MALAWI SUB: Banda limps away from the touchline, his match is over. Kamanga on in his place.
    • 50' Corner to Algeria on the right, poor keeping from Sanudi who punches it into the path of Yebda, he must score but blocked on the line, and BOUGHERRA but also blocked!
    • 49' Banda picked up an injury scoring that goal, he was caught by the lunge of Halliche.
    • 48' Wadabwa's cross comes in from the right, terrible from the Algeria keeper to palm it into the path of Russel, he must score but rifles it against the post, Bougherra slides in to clear the loose ball but it falls to BANDA WHO DRILLS IT INTO THE BOTTOM LEFT FOR 3-0! AMAZING SCORELINE! BANDA STUNS ALGERIA!
    • 47' Throw to Malawi on the right which Kafoteka tries to launch into the box. Algeria break though, Ghezzal on the left bursts past one man and holds off another but a slide tackle puts it out.
    • 46' The referee blows to start the second half. A big ask for Algeria but, after Mali's amazing comeback last night, do not discount anything!
    • - Malawi have not only scored twice they have had 56% of the ball too. Algeria started well enough but faded badly and seem, well, uninterested.
    • - Just a reminded that, with Eurosport, you can watch this and all the African Cup of Nations matches. Just go to channel British Eurosport (Sky 410 / Virgin 521) or watch it on your PC with the Eurosport Player!
    • 45+1 There's the whistle, and my oh my, Malawi lead 2-0 thanks to strikes from Russel and Kafoteka.
    • 45' Only one minute added time being played...
    • 44' Superb slide tackle from Mponda after he gave it away to Ziani. They are playing out of their skins here, Algeria just not at the races after conceding!
    • 43' Yebda to Ziani, quick movement of the ball and he finds Ghezzal in the box on the left but his touch lets him down. He wins a corner in the end, which Ziani takes AND THE KEEPER FLAPS FOR BOUGHERRA FLYING IN but he heads over!
    • 42' Ziani crosses in from the left and Saifi is unmarked but it is behind him so he tries a bicyle kick - but misses. Algeria come again but Wadabwa, back on the pitch after his injury scare, clears.
    • 41' Wadabwa is in trouble after over-stretching in the challenge. Ziani takes the corner and Malawi, temporarily down to 10 men, clear.
    • 40' Belhadji tries a shot that takes a big deflection and spins wide of the diving Sanudi for a corner. Ziani on the left to take.
    • 39' Chaouchi with a comfortable take after a hopeful long ball.
    • 38' Belhadj on the left puts in a wicked, hanging cross to the far post that Sanudi does really well to fly across and palm away from danger.
    • 37' Frustration from Ziani, rapping the ankles of Kamwendo after losing the ball.
    • 36' That was a superbly-worked goal, Algeria asleep as the set-play was taken quickly but what a cross, and what a leap and header. The keeper had no chance.
    • 35' Zaoui puts behind for a corner to Malawi. Taken short and quick, and Chavula on the left smashes over a wicked, flat cross AND KAFOTEKA IN FLIES WITH A BULLET HEADER INTO THE TOP RIGHT! 2-0!
    • 34' A long one almost sends Ghezzal in but he's blocked off and Mansouri can have a pop but blocked.
    • 33' It gets a bit scrappy as Malawi continue working hard to close down Algeria in midfield.
    • 31' Sustained pressure from Algeria as Belhadj gets in down the left but Malawi clear. Good run and cross but the movement up front was a touch sluggish. They started well but words will be had at half-time.
    • 30' The free-kick is around 30 yards out, full-back Chavula will take and with this keeper he may as well have a crack... not like that though. About 15 yards over.
    • 29' Halliche late on Kanyenda and the referee gives him a verbal warning.
    • 28' The corner is sent low near post and Kanyenda tries to flick on but behind again for another corner. This one is cleared.
    • 27' Mansouri puts behind for a corner as another rapid Malawi break sees Banda get in down the left. The Malawi attitude is brave and determined, they're chasing everything as they try to take their chance at the big time.
    • 26' Kamwendo could be in on the left but he just miscontrols and it's out for a throw. The 23-year-old playmaker's day job is with Orlando Pirates in South Africa.
    • 24' Wonderful scooped ball from Ziani, what a pass! Saifi is in and he must score but the keeper comes out really fast to put him off and Saifi lofts it over! Should have gone for a low finish, but what a pass from Ziani, Laudrup-esque that was.
    • 23' Kafoteka with a good ball down the right for Kanyenda to chase but Algeria get back to clear.
    • 22' Free-kick to Algeria on the left, Ziani to take... swung over into the six-yard box but a good header away.
    • 21' Algeria's tails are up now as they set-up camp deep in the Malawi half. Ghezzal played in by Sangala clears.
    • 20' Belhadj swings the corner in and Sanudi punches clear but a foul from Saifi.
    • 19' Nice play from Algeria, super ball wide by Ziani to free Belhadj on the left, great hanging ball far post and Chavula has to put it out for a corner with Matmour lurking.
    • 18' That was terrible from the keeper - why on earth did he try to hoof it clear in his own box? He could and should have picked that up, not sure what Bougherra was doing but the blame lies squarely at the feet of Chaouchi, the stand-in after Gaouaoui was ruled out.
    • 17' Long ball down the middle, half-flicked on but Kanyenda chases anyway, and a horrendous lack of communication between Chaouchi and Bougherra as the keeper rushes out and smashes it against Kanyenda AND THE LOOSE BALL DROPS TO RUSSEL WHO HAMMERS IT INTO THE ROOF OF THE NET FROM A TIGHT ANGLE FOR A SHOCK 1-0 LEAD!
    • 16' Counter attack from Algeria as Saifi gets in down the right and he smashes in a half-volley that Sanudi again does well to parry near post.
    • 14' Bougherra bustles forward and lofts a cross-shot in that flies wide of the far post.
    • 13' Both teams have had some decent possession, with Malawi pretty much matching Algeria so far.
    • 11' Long-range shot from Russel but easy for stand-in Algeria keeper Fawzi Chaouchi.

    • 10' Diagonal ball in from Saifi but Ghezzal just strayed offside.
    • 9' Bougherra is high-fiving his team-mates after that chance but not sure why - uncharacteristically poor defending from Algeria, they left loads of space and almost arrogantly did not put any pressure on the ball.
    • 8' Wadabwa has loads of space on the right, no-one closing him down and he picks out a dipping cross AND RUSSEL FLIES IN WITH THE DOWNWARD HEADER BUT JUST WIDE!
    • 7' Kafoteka on the right puts in a teasing cross that Kanyenda almost gets on to but Halliche is tight on him to clear.
    • 6' Norkopping forward Russel Mwafulirwa tries to get back onside on the left but Algeria hold a nice line he's off. Let's just call him Russel for now.
    • 5' Ghezzal races down the right and SMASH he hammers a vicious drive at the near post that the keeper Sanudi does really well to parry. Malawi don't get it clear though and Ghezzal has another pop from the left this time but well over.
    • 4' Hopeful long ball from Yebda but well beyond Saifi.
    • 3' Belhadj slides in on Russia-based forward Kanyenda, who showed a nice turn of pace on the right. Throw to Malawi.
    • 2' Ghezzal and Yebda are very, very offside on Ziani's pass. Good stepping up by Malawi but very lazy from the forwards.
    • 1' The second match of this African Cup of Nations is underway! Algeria in green, Malawi in red and the crowd in absentia - there is no-one here.
    • - You can also watch it if you tune in to British Eurosport (Sky 410 / Virgin 521). Or, alternatively, get live audio commentary here.

    • - Algeria team: 16-Fawzi Chaouchi; 2-Madjid Bougherra, 5-Rafik Halliche, 17-Samir Zaoui; 3-Nadir Belhadj, 13-Karim Matmour, 19-Hassan Yebda, 6-Yazid Mansouri, 15-Karim Ziani; 9-Abdelkader Ghezzal, 10-Rafik Saifi.
    • - Malawi team: 1-Swadick Sanudi; 3-Moses Chavula, 5-James Sangala, 7-Peter Mponda, 12-Elvis Kafoteka; 13-Hellings Mwakasungula, 10-Joseph Kamwendo, 18-Peter Wadabwa, 19-Davi Banda; 9-Russell Mwafulirwa, 11-Esau Kanyenda.
    • - These boys made it to the World Cup after a dramatic, ballsy play-off win over big-guns Egypt, winning 1-0 in Sudan after suffering the heartbreak of conceding an injury-time goal in the final group game in Cairo - they can play, and they can scrap.
    • - Algeria keeper Lounes Gaouaoui was reported to have been ruled out of the tournament with appendicitis. Algeria's players, most of whom are Europe-based and half of whom are French-born, are far better known. Karim Ziani, formerly of Marseille and new signing for Wolfsburg, makes things tick in midfield, Portsmouth duo Hassan Yebda and Nadir Belhadj provide the threat from wide and Abdelkader Ghezzal is an exciting forward who plies his trade for Siena in Italy.
    • - Malawi are very much an unknown quantity, even by African standards. Only two of their players ply their trade in Europe - striker and star man Essau Kanyenda plays for Russian side FC KAMAZ while strike partner Russel Mwafulirwa turns out for Norkopping in Sweden. One to look out for though is 21-year-old forward Chiukepo Msowoya, who plays in Rwanda for APR FC and hit six goals in qualifying. He starts on the bench though.
    • - Does anything need to be said about the days leading up to and including the start of this tournament? A fatal gun attack on Togo, confusion over who was alive and who was dead, a will-they-won't-they drama over Togo's participation and, of course. a crazed 4-4 draw with Mali coming from 4-0 down with 11 minutes left, scoring three times between the 88th minute and final whistle. Africa Shocks, to paraphrase Leftfield and Mr Bambata. Mali stun Angola

  1. Kudos to Malawi but the timing 1:45 PM of the game had lots to do with the Algerian performance. You can see how lethargic the Algerian looked during the game. I think Algeria will rebound Thursday.
