    • - Thanks for joining us tonight - it's not been a classic, but there's plenty of talking points and in the end a good win for United. But Barnsley will be cursing their lack of finishing touch, because they had plenty of chances to make a game of this one. Click here for all the scores for the night.
    • 90'+2 The whistle blows to put Barnsley out of their misery, and United through to the quarter-finals.
    • 90'+1 Foster has a total sense of humour failure about that one - but the crowd loved every second of it. If only that pitch invader had been playing up front, the Tykes might have had a chance of finding the target a bit more often...
    • 90' Some fans are on the pitch... but they don't think it's all over... a pair of Barnsley players steal the ball off Ben Foster, pass back and forth to each other and score!
    • 89' Tosic is booked for a late sliding tackle.
    • 87' Lovely run across the box by Anderson, who backheels for Anderson - but the shot is not accurate enough and Steele dives to his left to make a good save.
    • 86' Barnsley look for the consolation effort with Hammill again running up the left, but Hume wanders offside and the move is over.
    • 85' Hume takes the free kick, but the only thing he does is ensure the Barnsley fans in row J get a touch of the ball tonight.
    • 84' Fabio is booked for a trip on Campbell-Ryce - dangerous free kick.
    • 83' It's a nice move up field for Barnsley and it's Hammill once again who has the chance, but he scuffs his studs as he shoots and the result goes weakly wide.
    • 82' Barnsley keep the ball and build up something promising...
    • 81' The crowd, finally, are all but silenced as hope dribbles away. The players' legs have gone, and off the ball they are dawdling around the pitch now.
    • 80' Barnsley's shooting has been plentiful but inaccurate for th most part - but Butterfield's effort there couldn't have been better. It's just not their night.
    • 79' GREAT CHANCE FOR BARNSLEY - AND AN EVEN BETTER SAVE BY FOSTER! Butterfield controls the ball brilliantly from a pass, dodges left to make space and smashes a stunning shot back across the goal to the bottom right... but Ben Foster makes the best save of the match, diving improbably to his left to stop a surefire goal.
    • 78' Hume takes the kick, but whips it staight over the box and clean off the picth.
    • 77' Free kick conceded to Barnsley by Tosic, on the right and in a dangerous spot.
    • 76' Barnsley struggle to make headway as the black shirts of United fall back.
    • 75' Great run from Hammill in from the left, but after doing the hard work he shoots selfishly and straight at Foster rather than put the ball across to the two waiting red shirts in the middle.
    • 74' It's hard to see another goal coming here from United this evening, they seem to have run out of steam completely.
    • 73' Still Barnsley pushing for every space... still United holding strong and knocking them back.
    • 72' Barnsley keep on looking to get back into this, but the challenges are getting desperate - and now Bogdanovic is booked for taking Rafael's legs away.
    • 71' From the corner Anderson is there at the far post - but his header goes wide!!! Barnsley could have had three or four goals from corners tonight but on this evidence couldn't finish a Mr Men book!
    • 70' ANOTHER GREAT CHANCE GONE FOR BARNSLEY! Lovely link-up between Hume and Bogdanovic sees the latter have a free shot on goal from 10 yards, but Foster pushes it just wide for a corner!
    • 68' The match result is surely beyond doubt now, but the way this half has gone a bit more controversy wouldn't be a shock.
    • 67' Lovely run up the left from Hammill and the cross finds Hume unmarked in the box... but the substitute striker heads just wide!
    • 66' Michael Owen comes off, Ritchie de Laet replaces him.
    • 65' Great chance for Bogdanovic, he had to score, but panicked with too much time on his hands and drags the ball wide left.
    • 64' United's Rafael hits a terrible pass straight to Bogdanovic...
    • 63' Considering Neville was sliding in at top speed to win that ball it's hard to see how he could have got out of the way, but the ref says it was intent to cause injury and that's all that matters.
    • 62' GARY NEVILLE IS SENT OFF!!!!!!! A shocking decision from the ref after Neville wins the ball cleanly but catches Hammill on his follow-through, full studs on mid-shin. Hammill is outraged and the ref shares his opinion.
    • 60' That'll be a massive relief to Owen - an absolute must after missing a far easier chance just a few minutes ago. The Barnsley marking was questionable - the defence had lost its shape a bit - but there's no taking away from the deft turn and assured finish. Classic Owen.
    • 59' Anderson plays a pass from the left to Owen... AND THE STRIKER BEATS TWO MEN AND SCORES!!!! Stephen Foster chases him down but the little man is away and thumps a very tidy finish into the bottom right corner.
    • 58' Tosic gets the ball in to Owen in the Barnsley box, but under pressure from the defence the England wannabe overdoes his control and it goes off for a kick.
    • 57' Nice ball from Anderson puts Tosic in with a chance to shoot, and the Serbian curls a lovely shot just a foot or so too high and to the left.
    • 56' United come forward well, but the final ball is too far up for Anderson.
    • 55' That Bogdanovic move was probably the best of the match on either side, a lovely bit of football from Barnsley's Maltese international.
    • 54' GREAT CHANCE FOR THE TYKES! Lovely run up the right by Bogdanovic, who cuts the ball back for Anderson at the last minute to give Anderson a free shot on goal... but the pass is a little awkward, and though he beats Foster he just misses the target.
    • 53' Danny Welbeck - the best player on the pitch tonight - comes off, Zoran Tosic comes on for United.
    • 52' That's two gilt edged chances gone begging already. The managers will be choking on what's left of their half-time cuppas.
    • 51' The corner is fed back and Macken gets it, coming up to the line well and putting in a gorgeous ball across the box... all it needs is a Barnsley player to have bothered staying awake in case of a cross.
    • 50' Barnsley can't believe they got away with that one and push up, winning a corner..
    • 48' GREAT CHANCE FOR OWEN - AND HE'S MESSED IT UP COMPLETELY!!! Are you watching Fabio Capello? Because Michael Owen was through on the keeper with a golden chance to score, but his slow pace saw him under pressure from the chasing defender and his bungling left foot shot flopped lifelessly off the pitch like a dying fish trying to jump off the edge of a trawler.
    • 47' The midfield ping-pong has started again, with both sets of players struggling to hang on to the globe.
    • 46' The second half gets under way, and the crowd are still singing as loud as ever. Will they have anything to cheer?
    • - Once the (pretty damn decent) cheerleaders are off the pitch the second half will begin. And let's hope it brings with it a slightly better level of entertainment than we've seen so far.
    • - United will be pleased with the lead - but less pleased with the way the second half of the opening period went. Barnsley look like they've got enough about them to find an equaliser as things stand. But once Fergie's chucked a few teacups around about their defending at corners they'll probably close the gaps up.
    • 45'+2 The whistle blows for the end of the half.
    • 45'+1 United are clearly just playing the half out now, happy with their 1-0 lead - but on the balance of play they're lucky to be ahead.
    • 45' United's team again seem to recognise that they are letting their grip slip, and they respond by regrouping and hanging on to the ball in midfield.
    • 43' SHOCKING MISSED CHANCE FOR BARNSLEY! Colace puts in a brilliant ball straight across the six-yard box from the right but Bogdanovic just can't quite slide down to it.
    • 42' The corner is hit clear past the far end of the box and bounces straight out of play.
    • 42' The next move of the match, and Macken wins a corner up on the left... Hammill will take.
    • 41' Barnsley win a free kick off Fabio's pushing and shoving, but the pass forward by Macken is so poor that it goes straight back to the Man U player's feet!
    • 40' It's a bit early for those sorts of frustrations from the Barnsley players - they are by no means out of this one yet.
    • 39' Hugo Colace now goes into the book too after taking Obertan's legs away with a late sliding tackle.
    • 38' Barnsley counter-attack and Hammill knocks in a curled ball from the left - Foster takes it well, and amazingly Anderson Da Silva tries to punch the ball out of his hands and in to the net! The ref is not amused, and the Barnsley player goes into the book.
    • 37' From the clearance United get the ball and Wes Brown curls it in towards Owen, who gets on the end of it but it loops well wide.
    • 36' Nearly another goal for United! Darren Moore misses a ball and Macheda charges through into the box - but Tykes keeper Steele comes flying out and boots it clear! A nervy moment - the keeper is not amused at his defender.
    • 35' The hosts win a corner but the delivery is poor from Hammill and the ball is cleared easily.
    • 35' United have had a good spell, but now Barnsley try to take control once more, hanging on tot he ball well.
    • 34' Barnsley try to hit on the break but the long ball by Hammill is overhit and Ben Foster collects.
    • 33' The ball is cleared out as far as Fabio, who shoots.... but his shot is so bad it actually ends up back with Anderson by the corner flag!
    • 32' Obertan and Welbeck combine well up by the right corner flag, and force a corner... Anderson will take again.
    • 31' Long ball up from Gary Neville finds Michael Owen; he tries to control it off his - ahem - backside, but Macheda is too far behind to pick it up.
    • 30' United keep putting passes upfield but Barnsley's men are well up for this now and are closing down space ruthlessly.
    • 29' United's young team get the ball back and try to reestablish their grip on the game by hanging on to possession. They've been outplayed these last ten minutes and know it.
    • 27' Stephen Foster gets his head to the corner once again, and hammers it nicely - but just over the bar! Great chance once again for the Tykes.
    • 26' Barnsley come again, and win yet another corner... If they keep this up then you feel an equaliser has to come.
    • 25' Stephen Foster gets on the end of the corner and has a free header, but he directs it well wide. That's two poorly-defended corners from United...
    • 24' Barnsley are finally getting to grips with United -it's another corner...
    • 23' BARNSLEY HIT THE POST! The corner is whipped in well and finds Bogdanovic unmarked - and the Barnsley striker hammers a great header just into the top left of the post.
    • 23' Long ball up, and Barnsley win a corner after a deflected shot...
    • 22' The tempo is relentlessly end-to-end, but more because neither midfield seems able to stop the other's progress at the moment.
    • 21' Steele pumps the free kick upfield and Barnsley winger Anderson Da Silva gets on the end and has a crack... it's wide and has no power, but is at least a half-chance.
    • 20' Federico Macheda is running up trying to make something happen, but is penalised for a shove.
    • 19' Great run by Welbeck up the left leads to a ball in to Owen, who is surrounded but passes out to Oberta - CHANCE TO SCORE ON HIS DEBUT!!! But a well-timed slide save by Luke Steele denies him.
    • 18' United, playing in their black change strip, are all over their hosts any time they have a half chance...
    • 16' Welbeck cuts down Robert Kozluk and Barnsley win a free kick, but the long is pumped aimlessly into the box. All too easy for Foster.
    • 15' Hammill cuts in well, but his shot is a snatched and deflects straight off a defender - wasted effort, but best move of the match for the hosts.
    • 14' Barnsley finally get a good ball away and Adam Hammill gets off on a run down the right...
    • 13' The crowd keep on singing manfully - the fans are determind to enjoy this night whatever happens.
    • 11' Barnsley's midfield seem to have all the calm and poise of a group of headless chickens after a night out on absinthe. They just can't put any shape on this match at all.
    • 10' Welbeck gets the ball on the left, lovely touch and has a shot that's saved back into the path of Macheda, but the Italian is closed down well by the defence.
    • 9' United keep pushing, and here they come with a dangerous looking move forwards...
    • 8' It's the worst possible start for Barnsley and the best imaginable for United - the players already look that much mor relaxed after taking the lead so easily.
    • 7' Mark Robins will be having nightmares about that defensive lapse for months to come - woeful stuff from the hosts, Welbeck didn't have a single defender in front of him.
    • 6' One corner leads to another - AND UNITED SCORE!!!! It's Danny Welbeck, nodding in a totally free header from the corner!
    • 5' Macheda makes a run through and wins a corner as he is tackled by Foster.
    • 4' Barnsley right back Hassell makes a run, but is well tackled.
    • 3' From Foster's clearance there's a bit of midfield pinball before a loose ball finds its way through to Steele between the Barnsley sticks.
    • 2' The hosts close Welbeck down and come patiently through the middle, winning a free kick just inside the United half. It's pumped in to the box, Ben Foster takes the ball with ease.
    • 1' United immediately on the attack down the left flank through Danny Welbeck.
    • 1' Michael Owen takes the kick off, and we're under way at Oakwell.
    • - Big player to watch tonight is Gabriel Obertan, one of Fergie's summer signings but a player yet to appear for the Red Devils.
    • - It's cloudy but dry and fairly warm at Oakwell tonight, not cold for the time of year either at nearly 15 degrees. Full weather forecast.
    • - We'll also be bringing you all the details of scores and scorers from all of tonight's Carling Cup matches in our multiplex.
    • - We'll be bringing you full live comments from this match tonight, and also Everton's trip to Tottenham.
    • - Some jokers are letting off fireworks just outside the ground. Quite right too, lads: use 'em now, you might not feel like fireworks after the match...
    • - The referee for tonight's match is Chris Foy. And speaking of refs, Fergie has taken the rap from the FA for his comments about Alan Wiley.
    • - Man Utd: Foster, Neville, Brown, Jonathan Evans, Fabio Da Silva, Obertan, Rafael Da Silva, Anderson, Welbeck, Macheda, Owen. Subs: Amos, Tosic, O'Shea, De Laet, Corry Evans, King, James
    • - Barnsley: Steele, Kozluk, Moore, Foster, Julian Gray, De Silva, Colace, Hallfredsson, Hammill, Macken, Bogdanovic. Subs: Preece, Campbell-Ryce, Hume, Hassell, Butterfield, Thompson, Devaney
    • - As for Manchester United, well, Alex Ferguson would probably get more excited about winning a tenner on the lottery than he would about racking up another Carling Cup win. But even the young team he's fielding tonight is a fairly intimidating sight...
    • - Robins will also be missing striker Nathan Doyle, who is also cup-tied after playing for Charlton in the first round of this tournament before his move north.
    • - It's a massive game for the Tykes, with a quarter-final spot up for grabs - but Mark Robins will be missing three on-loan players in Ryan Shotton, Carl Dickinson and Nathan Doyle as they are cup tied.
    • - Welcome to Oakwell for our LIVE coverage of Barnsley against Manchester United in the Carling Cup.

Ask Torres, he’s had a few from me so far this season. I know you’ll get me out one day when the campaign money runs out. Try bribing the guards in HMP Atavar instead of the screws in Barbados. It’s no good bribing Thai brides either, that just hasn’t worked. I could have played for United myself they were so bad. It keeps the spirit up in Liverpool during these hard tomes.
