    Time:90'
    • Villarreal
    • Panathinaikos
    • 90' FULL-TIME: Panathinaikos will be delighted to have scored an away goal but Mantzios will be disappointed he didn't double his side's lead moments after Karagounis had scored. Villarreal played the more attacking football but now face a tricky second leg in Greece.
    • 90' Rukavina comes on for the hardworking Mantzios in the dying moments of this game. His first task is to play a long backpass to his keeper. There is only one side going for the win now.
    • 90' Senna creeps forward for Villarreal but is dispossessed for the first time in 90 minutes. Panathinaikos decide not to attack and play it back to their keeper who eats up a few more seconds.
    • 90' Junior Simao is winded by a ball to the stomach.
    • 89' Cazorla goes close with a left foot drive from 20 yards out. Could that be the last chance of the game?
    • 88' Trouble in the dug-out! Management and players combine for a bit of handbags in the technical area. Robert Pires and Palathinaikos manager Henk Ten Cate seem to be the main culprits. The gaffa seemed to hold on to the ball a little bit too long when the Frenchman wanted to take a quick throw in.
    • 86' Senna and Angel combine well again down the right to release Rossi. The Italian's in-swinging left-foot curler goes inches wide of the left post.
    • 85' The resulting corner is claimed easily by Galinovic.
    • 83' ...in fact he makes way for Salpigidis for the final five minutes.
    • 82' The corner is delayed while goalscorer Karagounis receives treatment on his ankle.
    • 81' Senna sprays it wide to Sorlano Bruno. He cuts inside and plays it back to Senna whose shot is deflected wide for a Villarreal corner.
    • 80' Angel needlessly gives the ball away to Karagounis who once again thrusts forward deep into the opposition half. But his shot is blocked by Zumarraga.
    • 79' Pires weaves his way from the right hand side of the Panathinaikos box....all the way to the left. But then runs out of steam and falls over.
    • 77' Maybe the Greek side have realised this! A crunching tackle from Gilberto Silva floors Senna much to the disgust of his Villarreal team mates. No card.
    • 76' Senna puts his foot on the ball and slows the game down again. The adopted Spaniard seems to dictate the pace of this match.
    • 74' Meanwhile the hard-working Rossi always looks a threat. He dispossesses left-back Wawrzyniak but fires wide from a tight angle.
    • 73' Pires has made a real difference to this match. The Frenchman has caused all sorts of problems for the Panathinaikos defence with his mazy runs.
    • 71' Pires goes on a weaving run through the centre of midfield and sprays it wide to Angel on the right. He steps inside and delivers it to the Spaniard Cani. His shot is deflected to Rossi who smashes it across goal. No one reaches it and it goes out for a throw in. Best move of the match so far.
    • 69' VILLARREAL SUB: Ibagaza makes way for the more attack minded Cani.
    • 67' Gilberto Silva fouls his former Arsenal team mate Robert Pires. He nearly earns himself a second yellow by walking away from the ref.
    • 66' Rossi steps up to take the spot-kick and slots it neatly into the left hand corner with his left-foot.
    • 65' Penalty for Villarreal. Pires is brought down by Wawrzyniak.
    • 62' Panathinaikos go close again. Awful defending from a poor cross leaves Mantzios with the keeper to beat from six yards out. He hits it cleanly but Diego Lopez pulls off a fantastic save.
    • 60' DOUBLE SUBSTITUTION FOR VILLARREAL: The Spanish side are going for it. Robert Pires and Nihat are introduced to the game at the cost of Sebastian Eguren and Joseba Llorente.
    • 57' Giorgios Karagounis storms through the middle of the pitch on the break to fire in a stunning right foot effort into the top right corner. That's three goals in his last six Champions League matches.
    • 56' Ibagaza comes a bit closer straight afterwards with a right foot drive from 20 yards. It worries Galinovic but creeps a couple of yards wide of his right post.
    • 54' Jakub fouls Senna in a dangerous position just outside the box - but once again the free-kick is wasted. Ibagaza fires high and wide.
    • 52' At times Panathinaikos are showing glimpses of how they managed to beat Inter Milan at the San Siro. Centre back Zumarraga is matching Rossi and Lorente for pace and quickly releasing Karagounis in midfield to break away dangerously.
    • 49' Ariel Ibagaza looks a lot more lively for Villarreal after a quiet first half. A zig-zagging run through the centre releases Llorente who miscontrols.
    • 48' A lazy upfield ball from Senna is watched by the Panathinaikos defence forcing Galinovic to race out of his box and slice the ball sideways into touch.
    • 47' Another Villarreal corner is well claimed by Galinovic on the penalty spot.
    • 46' Panathinaikos substitution. Goumas makes way for midfielder Rodrigues Gabriel in a straight swap.
    • 46' SECOND HALF: Off we go again. Let's hope we see a bit more quality from both teams in the next 45.
    • - The more you watch Karagounis' free-kick, the more you think it crossed the line! In fact Diego Lopez has a quick glance over to the linesman as he steps forward from his line.
    • - Panathinaikos have looked dangerous on the break at times but Villarreal have played the better football.
    • 45' HALF-TIME: Thank god. This game has been painful to watch at times. On this evidence neither team looks likely to progress too much further.
    • 44' The game is being made worse by the fact that most of these freekicks have been completely wasted. Karagounis backs this up with a sloppy overhit effort which goes straight to Diego Lopez.
    • 42' Another quiet period sees both teams giving possession away cheaply. The game is starting to get spoiled by petty needless fouls.
    • 40' Fabricio Fuentes goes down clutching his groin on Villarreal's left flank. The replay shows he took a nasty kick from Nilsson. Fuentes has a quick check and confirms to the crowd that he still has two.
    • 38' Rossi loops in a cross from the right which is met by the head of Cazorla. But the ref rules that he pushed Goumas in the back.
    • 37' An awful tackle by central defender Goumas on Rossi wins him the first yellow card of the match. The resulting free-kick is scuffed in low. Another wasted freekick from the Spanish side.
    • 35' This is a big week for the Shamrocks. The Greek side face Super League leaders Olympiakos on Saturday.
    • 34' Villarreal are really starting to take over now. Marcos Senna is bossing the midfield and running the whole show.
    • 33' Having seen the replay - the former Arsenal midfielder had a point! In fact Diego Silva took TWO steps back and clearly crossed the line holding the ball.
    • 31' A free-kick from Karagounis is claimed by Diego Lopez who takes a step backwards. Giberto Silva claims the keeper stepped over the line but the Brazilian is waved away by referee Konrad Plautz.
    • 29' Two bicycle kicks by Rossi and then Llorente are both fluffed leaving the two Villarreal players floundering on the floor and three Panathinaikos players fighting to clear the ball.
    • 27' Rossi is put clean through after great work down the left by Ibagaza. But the Italian is yet again denied by the feet of Galinovic.
    • 25' Karagounis makes his first impact of the match (other than hacking down Spanish midfielders) with a cleanly struck left-foot effort from 20 yards out. But it causes no problems for Diego Lopez.
    • 24' Villarreal are totally dominating possession by 61% to 39%.
    • 22' The corner is met by Sebastian Eguren who heads wide from 7 yards out. He should have done much better.
    • 21' Angel plays a decent ball down the right for Cazorla who wins yet another Villarreal corner.
    • 20' Rossi is put through by Senna but a last-ditch tackle by Goumas denies him.
    • 19' You could here a pin drop at times. Neither side has offered any inspiration for fans at El Madrigal.
    • 18' ...But Rossi's freekick is fired straight into the keeper's breadbasket.
    • 17' Things are starting to simmer nicely. A third foul from Karagounis leads a swarm of Villarreal players to surround the ref asking for a booking.
    • 15' An awful corner from Cazorla loops over everybody and bounces once before nestling neatly into the crowd. The travelling Greek fans let out a huge roar.
    • 13' Mantzios meets his side's second corner of the match with a solid left foot volley. But he causes no problems for the Spanish side's keeper, Diego Lopez, who watches it sail over his bar.
    • 11' Karagounis fouls Senna in the middle of the park and is lucky not to get booked.
    • 10' It's a very scrappy affair so far. Neither team have put together many meaningful moves.
    • 8' Panathinaikos' first attack of the match is thwarted by the linesman who catches out striker Evangelos Mantzios after a good ball from Gilberto Silva.
    • 6' Giuseppe Rossi has been the liveliest of the four strikers on show so far. He has spun is marker several times but has then gone on to lose control.
    • 4' A great crossfield ball from Senna reaches Angel who cuts inside and shoots from the right hand corner of the box. Galinovic is equal to the task and gets down quickly to smother the shot with his legs.
    • 3' ....but the corner kick goes straight to the keeper.
    • 2' Cazorla goes down like he's been shot after a tough tackle from Jakub Wawrzyniak. No foul but he wins Villarreal a corner.
    • 1' A good ball from Villarreal's Sorlano Bruno nearly reaches Rossi but Panathinaikos keeper Mario Galinovic gets there just in time.
    • - FIRST HALF: Off we go. Two of the competition's outsiders kick-off at El Madrigal.
    • - Panathinaikos have never won in Spain. In fact they have only managed to score five goals in their last nine visits.
