Basel shock Bayern in first leg
Basel struck late on to stun Bayern Munich with a 1-0 Champions League last-16 first leg victory at St. Jakob-Park. More

90+4' Again it's played short, and again they show their inability to use that tactic as Bayern get it back. It's soon played back to Sommer who clears... and there's the final whistle! Basel upset Munich but the job is only half done! Now Steinhofer gets another corner out on the right.

- 90+1' Lahm and Robben exchange passes on the edge of the box and Basel just can't seem to get it clear, until they eventually take the ball from Olic.

89' Bayern bring off Kroos for Ivica Olic in a last-ditch attempt to find an away goal, while Basel do the opposite and remove striker Frei to bring on Cabral.- 88' Robben's cross goes straight to Sommer, but Muller draws the ire of the home team in going for it after he catches with a high foot. He's highly apologetic, and he should be - last thing he wants is to be sent off for a second yellow and miss what will now be a crucial second leg.
- 87' The subs combine as Zoua slices open the defence with a diagonal through pass towards the left-hand side where Stocker slots home across Neuer.

Replays of his to-do with Badstuber shows he may have had a case. Looked like the defender took his legs before ball.
- 80' Badstuber clears a cross moments after one from the other flank was headed away by Boateng. The latter gives Basel a corner.
- 79' Basel want a foul against Badstuber who challenges Frei out on the right, but it's ruled a fair challenge. The two exchange words about that one.
- 78' Take the 'vic' from the centre-back's surname as he shows great resilience, a la Rocky IV, and shakes it off to continue almost immediately.
- 77' Corner comes to the far post but Alaba concedes a free-kick catching Dragovic as he tries to beat the defender to the ball. He accidentally caught him right in the jaw with his studs. Ouch!
- 76' Muller short down the left to Lahm, who squares for Robben but his tight-angled shot is closed down at the expense of a corner.
- 75' Tymoschuk loses the ball in the centre circle and it's sent out to Shaqiri on the left wing, but his cross is dealt with.

- 66' My earlier prediction of of a sub was somewhat off the mark, but Basel do now make a change. It's the man who was warming up back around the hour mark - Valentin Stocker - who comes on for Fabian Frei.
- 65' Robben to shoot. Low and it's blocked by the wall. It comes back to Gomez who tries an overhead kick... but it's hit more up in the air than at goal and allows Sommer to make a routine catch.
- 64' Dangerous free-kick now, and one which was foolishly conceded as Robben had lost his way on that attack. The ball had been knocked away from goal before his shirt was grabbed.
- 63' Robben goes down inside the 'D' as Abraham pulls his shirt. Yellow card for the Argentine too.

- 61' Ribery is dispossessed on the left wing by Abraham and Basel try to break through Streller, who himself loses out to Badstuber.

- 58' GOMEZ! Sandwiched by Angel Abraham and Dragovic before he can shoot. And it's legal, the ball was more theirs than his.
- 56' Great run by Shaqiri down the right and then across to the left in Bayern's final third, but he takes it too far and runs out of options. He tries to shoot, but it's easily blocked from 20 yards.
- 55' Ribery wants a free-kick when he's powered off the ball by Angel, but the referee rules it a legal shoulder challenge.
- 54' Huggel ends another Basel attack with a foul on Badstuber.
- 52' Shaqiri's corner is brought down by Streller, but he does do with his hand and the whistle goes as his shot is blocked.

46' Basel get the second half underway.- 45+1' We get but seconds of time added on before the half-time whistle sounds. Not a surprise, hardly anything to stop the game for. - 45' Just as Bayern take the corner, one of referee Rizzoli's assistants appears to give his take on the decision and very belatedly, it's changed to a goal kick.
- 44' Steinhofer and Sommer is furious as a corner is given when the right-back clearly played the ball off Lahm last.
- 43' Game has quietened slightly since the opening stages but still a very flowing contest. Good advert for the competition, this, especially with most eyes exclusively trained on English and Spanish clubs.
