    • - If you fancy a whinge about Arsenal's horror show over the next hour or two you can vent at me on Twitter. Otherwise, see you next time (which is the weekend). Follow @Reda_Eurosport on Twitter
    • 90+4 That's the final whistle and they lose at home in Europe for the first time at the Emirates. Boos ring out, Santos's agent gets on the blower. 2-0 Schalke, and a dreadful peformance from Arsenal - Schalke win easily in the end!
    • 90+3 Marica, the Romanian striker, is okay. Now Gnabry forces a smart save from Unnerstall - Arsenal's first attempt on target all night.
    • 90+1 Clash of heads in midfield - Ramsey I think with Maric, who came on for Huntelaar a minute or two ago.
    • 90' Into stoppage time- no signal I can see as to how much.
    • 88' The Schalke fans, meanwhile, are enjoying themselves. Can I recommend Slim Jim's on Upper Street for a post-match tipple? Arsenal should get out of this group but with this kind of squad depth I don't see them lasting much beyond February.
    • 87' The stands are emptying at an alarming rate now. This has been dire, this second half.
    • 85' GOAL SCHALKE! 2-0! Afellay unmarked at the far post as Farfan gets in acres of space wide right before playing a driven low ball across the six-yard box. Terrible from Santos again, who had a 10-yard head start but drifted inside to lert Farfan.
    • 83' Gnabry's first move is a lovely piece of skill on the right but the cross just misses Mertesacker.
    • 82' ARSENAL DOUBLE SUB: Arshavin and Gnabry on for Podolski and Jenkinson.
    • 81' Ramsey gets in down the left but makes a mess of his cross. More changes for Arsenal coming...
    • 79' Arsenal are trying to test Schalke but they're not really having much success. This hasn't been as bad as Norwich, but it's not far off.
    • 78' Farfan and Afellay combine to release Huntelaar, who drills a fine low cross to no-one, as he is the striker. Santos, meanwhile, is on halfway, getting his nails done.
    • 77' You look at that defending and you wonder how Steve Bould has stopped himself from running on to the pitch and garotting his full-backs.
    • 76' GOAL SCHALKE! Huntelaar rams it low past Mannone as the Arsenal defence flounders with the attempted offside. The centre-backs stepped out but both Jenkinson and Santos didn't. Comedy.
    • 75' ARSENAL SUB: Mixed reaction from the fans to Gervinho as he exits, which is unnecessary, and Giroud is on.
    • 74' Giroud is coming on now. Finalement. Arsenal, meanwhile, keep giving it away. Groans from the home fans.
    • 73' Farfan in acres of space, another good run from him, but good keeping this time from Mannone to gather.
    • 72' Gervinho leads a counter attack, he should be in here but he takes it too far wide. He gets in past Matip and he goes down! No penalty, a dive! The replay shows it was a super call.
    • 71' Great first-time cross from Barnetta and a downward header across goal but cleared by Arsenal. Barnetta has it again and another super cross but just over Matip's head!
    • 70' Ramsey gives the ball away and then takes down Afellay for a booking.
    • 69' Well it could be worse, Arsenal fans - you could be City, who are 3-1 down at Ajax and could well be on the brink of another Champions League exit.
    • 68' Arsenal pass their way out of an Afellay-led attack. Now Gervinho on the move but he runs into a sea of blue.
    • 67' Santos commits a foul as he tries to beat two Schalke players on the left. He's more effective going forward, as we know, but has been a touch clumsy today.
    • 66' Barnetta's first move is to foul Arteta. Arsenal are a touch limp once again.
    • 65' SCHALKE SUB: Holtby, who has been quiet, is replaced by Barnetta.
    • 64' Gervinho with a strong run down the left but with him out wide there's no-one in the middle to attack his fine low cross. Giroud?
    • 63' Some life to this game finally as, with Vermaelen upfield, Schalke break and almost cause problems as Farfan drags a low cross-shot beyond Mannone and Huntelaar.
    • 61' Arsenal need a change - it'll have to be Giroud really as there's nothing of note on that bench.
    • 60' All getting a bit dreary now as the fog thickens. Arsenal really are missing their English trio - thought you'd never hear that eh?
    • 59' Farfan frees Uchida but this time Santos saves the day with a vital interception. Cazorla slipped to let that move in.
    • 58' The fog is getting heavier and heavier as the night goes on. Schalke don't mind that.
    • 57' Holtby's ball is met by Howedes, whose downward header bounces well over.
    • 56' This match is all a bit scrappy now. Schalke will take that, as Mertesacker blocks Holtby's shot. Corner.
    • 55' Santos on the move now but he clumsily fouls Uchida and it's a Schalke free-kick. Arsenal missing Walcott and the Ox, no doubt about it.
    • 54' Cazorla finds Podolski on the left but he has two on him as Schalke double up on their German pal.
    • 52' Gervinho is almost played though but Matip does really well to hold him off and clear.
    • 51' Farfan is incorrectly called offside after an Inzaghi-esque diagonal run. Lucky escape!
    • 50' Mannone punches when he should have caught. Then Santos goes walkabout, missing a tackle on Farfan, terrible, and he cuts is back to Hoewedes who blasts it over! Should have been a goal!
    • 49' Corner to Schalke on the left, in front of their fans who are having a great time.
    • 48' Schalke have a chance to get in behind Arsenal here but they elect to keep it patiently instead of going for the quick break and the move loses impetus.
    • 47' ARSENAL SHOULD HAVE SCORED! They overplayed it after Santos and Cazorla combined beautifully, Coquelin initially doing well but opting to cut back instead of shoot, Ramsey trying a backheel but blocked by sliding defenders.
    • 46' The second half is underway.
    • - Half-time change for Schalke - the booked Hoeger off for Jermaine Jones. Santos, remarkably, stays on.
    • - You know the half-time drill - predictions and comments on Twitter @Reda_Eurosport. FOLLOW ON TWITTER!
    • 45' And that's the whistle - no added time, half-time and goalless but both sides have had decent chances and Schalke feel they should have had a penalty.
    • 45' Santos gets away with one again, an offside flag saving him this time.
    • 44' The ref has a word with Matip. It seems he's keen to show the cards for dissent, diving and cynical fouls as opposed to for tackles.
    • 43' BIG MISS HUNTELAAR! Santos was caught out of position again, Uchida racing away down the right to latch on to a long ball, a fine low cross and Huntelaar was unmarked at the near post but fluffed his lines. Should have scored, was a few yards wide in the end.
    • 42' Santos gets forward now but runs into a few defenders. He manages to get back well enough as Schalke look to play it forward quickly but are held up by Coquelin and co.
    • 41' Ramsey releases Gervinho down the right and he finds Jenkinson, who cuts inside but hits a cross-shot high and wide. Better.
    • 40' Hoeger is booked, not sure what for, assume backchat as the ball wasn't in play - unless advantage was given of an off-the-ball or late foul in the previous move.
    • 39' Santos latches on to a Podolski flick but, surrounded by blue in the Schalke box, commits a foul.
    • 38' Jenkinson has three blue shirts around him as he tries to clear. Schalke working really hard.
    • 37' Gervinho is played in again but the ball gets caught between his feet and the chance is gone.
    • 36' Arsenal back in possession but that habit is creeping back in of panicking in the final third.
    • 35' Farfan in acres of space on the right and he slips it inside with Huntelaar lurking but again Mertesacker with a lunge to hook it clear!
    • 34' Cazorla pings another superb pass across the park but his team-mates aren't on the same wavelength, the move losing momentum.
    • 33' Arsenal - and Santos in particular - just look so nervous when the opposition has the ball. They scramble it clear once more.
    • 32' Arsenal counter but it's Gervinho on the left wing and his delivery, as ever, is poor when he has time to pick out a pass. Straight to a defender with two team-mates waiting.
    • 31' A quick free-kick sees Uchida released down the right wing but he can't find Huntelaar. Now Farfan is on the ball, he beats one man, then another and he shoots but blocked by Mertesacker!
    • 30' Oh dear, Vermaelen seems to have injured himself in making that interception.
    • 29' Schalke's turn to come forward but a good interception by Vermaelen. His long ball for Gervinho is too straight though.
    • 28' Arsenal are probing and probing now, surely only a matter of time? They look more incisive than the dross on show at Norwich.
    • 27' Schalke get lucky as a Cazorla shot takes a huge deflection that leaves the keeper wrong-footed - but ends up wide.
    • 26' Couple of crunching challenges in midfield from both sides but the ref says it's all good.
    • 25' Arsenal attack once more as Cazorla - who is in the thick of eveything - pulls the strings. Vermaelen has got forward but Hoewedes blocks his shot.
    • 23' Lovely ball by Cazorla sends Gervinho free down the left! He's clear but his touch while cutting inside is dreadful, allowing the defence back. He falls over it for good measure too.
    • 22' Afellay dithers, allowing Cazorla to run away. Now Gervinho finds Ramsey but he loses control of it and Schalke survive.
    • 21' Podolski heads his fellow Germany international's free-kick away. As we all know, Podolski could have played for Poland - and Holtby for England. But both grew up in Germany and went for them instead. No-brainer given the respective histories.
    • 20' Coquelin questions the linesman when he is said to have fouled Holtby, who will swing it in from the byline...
    • 19' Gervinho gives it away and Farfan is in down the right but his cross is blocked by Santos. Throw.
    • 18' Fantastic run by Podolski down the left after nice play with Gervinho, leaving Uchida for dead again and beating keeper Unnerstall with a low ball but it lands behind Ramsey and Schalke survive!!
    • 17' First Vermaelen clears, then Mertesacker has to hoof one away, and Schalke's momentum is finally broken when Uchida strays offside.
    • 16' After being outplayed in the early exchanges, Schalke are attacking Arsenal in waves now. They sense a dodgy keeper.
    • 15' And now another booking the ref gets wrong as Vermaelen is accused of a foul on Farfan, who dived. Deary me.
    • 14' No! The ref decides a dive, and Afellay is booked! Looked a penalty to me!
    • 13' Through ball aimed for Afellay should be dealt with by Jenkinson, who shepherds it back to Mannone but the keeper panics and doesn't come for it! Afellay is in, he gets past Mannone who hits the deck and takes him down! Penalty surely...
    • 12' Arsenal are dominating the midfield but, as with the weekend, they look worryingly toothless.
    • 11' Santos getting forward with regularity but he can't get on to that long ball.
    • 10' More good work by Arsenal down the left as Podolski and Cazorla combine but Schalke have bodies back. Throw Arsenal.
    • 9' Cazorla finds Podolski wide left, he races clear of Uchida and drills in a fine low cross but Gervinho, from an angle, can only turn it wide! First chance, a difficult one to be fair.
    • 8' Nice floated ball wide to Santos, he takes it on the chest before playing a nice one-two with Cazorla but Santos just can't make the return.
    • 7' Hoewedes fouls Podolski in midfield and Arsenal have a free-kick, which is taken quickly and short to yield a throw.
    • 6' Gervinho ploughing a lone furrow up front. Looking a touch isolated when Arsenal need to switch play quickly.
    • 5' Schalke break through Afellay but he can't find Huntelaar with the through ball, good covering by Santos.
    • 4' Ramsey squeezes a nice through ball for Gervinho, good run from him but he waits too long before putting the low cross in and it's blocked before coming back off the Ivorian for a goal kick. Poor.
    • 3' Arsenal with the early possession but little of note from it as Jenkinson runs it out while looking for Gervinho.
    • 2' Strong slide tackle from Coquelin marks an otherwise scrappy opening.
    • 1' The first half is underway. A touch muted from the home fans, but the 3,000 Schalke fans are roaring already.
    • 19:43 Arsenal win the toss and are happy with their end. Pre-match odds from William Hill put Arsenal at 5/4, Schalke at 23/10 and the draw at 11/5.
    • 19:42 The on-pitch pleasantries are being completed, hands shaken and the rest.
    • 19:41 The teams are in the tunnel as the London fog starts to settle. Summer well and truly over now.
    • 19:40 This is a nice stat - all three shots on target Schalke have faced so far in this season's Champions League have found the net. The message to Arsenal? SHOOOOOOT!
    • - As ever, you can talk shop with me about this game by Tweeting @Reda_Eurosport. Or you can chance your arm with the baying mob below. Good luck with that. FOLLOW ON TWITTER!
    • 19:35 STATS: Since losing to Inter in 2003, Arsenal have only lost two out of 43 Champions League home games and those were against other English teams; Schalke have won 14 and lost just four of their last 25 European matches; The German side have won nine and lost none of their last 13 Group matches in Europe (CL & EL).
    • 19:30 STATS: All three of Aaron Ramsey’s Champions League goals have been netted in the 90th minute or later; Lukas Podolski has scored four goals in his last three Champions League matches; Arsenal have the best conversion rate in the Champions League so far, scoring with 36% of their shots.
    • 19:25 STATS: Arsenal met Schalke in the 2001-02 Group Stage, winning 3-2 at home and losing 1-3 in Gelsenkirchen; Schalke have won just one of their last eight European games against English teams (W1 D1 L6), but that was their 3-1 win over Arsenal at home in September 2001; Schalke have failed to score in four of their last five European games against English opponents, including their last three home matches.
    • 19:20 Referee tonight is the Swede, Jonas Eriksson. The Swedish season starts in the spring, so I will give you his stats as of the conventional European season from mid-August: 9 matches, 2 red cards, 32 yellows. He liks a booking then - a whopping NINE in Cluj's 2-1 win at Basel in Champions League qualifying - but is less keen to dismiss.
    • 19:15 Schalke meanwhile still have no Draxler (broken wrist) or Papadopoulos (chicken pox) both of whom are training but not match fit, certainly not Emirates fit. Draxler does make the bench though. Young keeper Lars Unnerstall gets the nod over Timo Hildebrand once more.
    • 19:10 So for Arsenal, the Mertesacker-Vermaelen combination at the back gets the nod over one involving Koscielny, which I'm not sure is the right tack given Vermaelen's recent performances, even if Koscielny missed that defeat to Norwich. Oxlade-Chamberlain misses out with the hip injury he picked up against the Canaries, while Walcott, Gibbs and Wilshere are not deemed fit enough to start. Sagna still out of course. Giroud is dropped to the bench with Coquelin to add bodies in midfield.
    • 19:05 TEAMS - Arsenal: Mannone, Jenkinson, Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Santos, Ramsey, Coquelin, Arteta, Santi Cazorla, Podolski, Gervinho; SUBS: Shea, Koscielny, Giroud, Djourou, Arshavin, Chamakh, Gnabry /// Schalke: Unnerstall, Uchida, Hoewedes, Matip, Fuchs, Neustaedter, Hoeger, Afellay, Holtby, Farfan, Huntelaar; SUBS: Hildebrand, Marica, Jones, Barnetta, Moritz, Draxler, Kolasinac
    • 19:00 Arsene Wenger: "He (Lukas Podolski) is hot in every game - he has played very well until Saturday. For tomorrow (against Schalke), he has a bit more pressure than normal, but I think he's used to that - he has over 100 caps for Germany, so I think he can handle that. He is a very friendly person and he works very hard - and I think he works hard for the team as well. I don't think you can pretend with this sort of thing. In the dressing room, there is a great atmosphere."
    • 18:55 Huub Stevens: "Our young team is still developing. But the players have shown what they are capable of. I see Arsenal as the favourites for our group. Montpellier, Olympiacos and we will be fighting for second place."
    • 18:50 Since losing to Inter in 2003, Arsenal have only lost two out of 43 Champions League home games and those were against other English teams.
    • 18:45 Good evening and welcome to our live text commentary of the Champions League group B match between Arsenal and Schalke at the Emirates Stadium.

  3. After watching the way Norwich out-muscled these bunch of flops, i said even if the ref allowed the match to continue till the following day, they still wouldn't have scored. Last night dismal performance confirms it.

  4. Not good enough Arsne, Surelly you know this. One shot on target in 90mins, We have not got a recognised goal scorer and all our rivals have 2 or 3 that can score regular.
