Raul
The Real Madrid captain is one of world football's elder statesmen, and has now equalled Gerd Muller's record of 66 goals in the European Cup and Champions League.
Laurent Blanc
Football is full of top players who have failed in management, but Blanc is a natural, having won Ligue 1 in his second season. He led Bordeaux to the best record of any team in the group stage.
Sinan Bolat
Standard Liege's young Turkish goalkeeper, whose last-gasp header against AZ Alkmaar earned his team a place in the Europa League. By all accounts, he's not a bad keeper either.
Louis van Gaal
The Dutchman is having a nightmare as Bayern manager, but their qualification for the knockout stages might have been a turning point. His side were awesome in the 4-1 win over Juventus.
Games in Russia
Call us greedy, but we don't really like all eight games being played at the same time. Which makes those early kick-offs for matches played in Russia a welcome bonus.
Olympiacos
The multiple Greek champions are perennial Champions League whipping boys, but might just be getting the hang of it. They have now reached the last 16 two of the last three seasons.
Liverpool
For a team with such a strong history in Europe to fail so comprehensively is embarrassing and depressing. Got a taste of their own medicine, conceding numerous late goals.
Jose Mourinho
The Special One was brought to Internazionale to win the Champions League, but a lacklustre group stage campaign - including a spanking by Barcelona - suggests they have no chance.
Gianluigi Buffon
Once the world's best keeper by miles, Buffon has suffered an alarming and long-standing dip in form, and he dropped several clangers in Tuesday's fateful defeat against Bayern.
Scottish football
Celtic lost in the qualifying rounds and Rangers' group campaign was especially miserable - Gers boss Walter Smith says there is little prospect of change without a major cash injection.
CSKA Moscow
The qualification for the knockout stages was overshadowed when two of their players, Sergei Ignashevich and Aleksei Berezutsky, tested positive for a banned substance.
The format
UEFA's determination to get more national champions involved is admirable but misguided. Debrecen and Maccabi Haifa finished pointless, while most groups were settled well before the end.

Michael Owen is hot as well!
Owen is Super Hot thats why his not here :)
I disagree with saying the format is bad. Surely next season's Debrecens and Maccabis will do better than this season's. Look at how good Unirea and Rubin did, despite being newcomers.
i wish yahoo would evaluate all the spam adverts and then warn them prior to removing their account and not allowing them to return when using the same ip address
what about man united's 3rd line beating the german champs in germany???
I just think its great for english football that liverpool are out they moan about other teams winning on penalties and such but remember at least 3 of their winning cups were on penalties and walter mitty as manager and a thug as their captain what more can i say
i really like bordeaux. they got the most points and conceded only twice in undoubtedly the hardest group. there going well in the league again and many would have write them off when they got the group they did. they've got some real good players - gourcuff and chamakh to name only two - and im backing them to get to the semi final. from an arsenal fan
who cares about olympiacos, what about manchester owning everyone without a main defence? All Hail Uniteddd
haha liverpool!!! c'mon pompeyy!! lets beat ya on the 19th!!
What an uneducated opinion of Buffon. Yes he didn't have the best game on Tuesday, but you make it sound like you have been living in a cave since August and haven't watched a minute of him.
So incase you don't follow any football outside of England, including international games not involving England (which i am under the impression that you don't), Buffon has been by far and wide the best goal keeper this season only to enhance his reputation. He has made some incredible interventions and it is because of him that Juve were in the position they were coming into the game against Bayern. Had he not been there, Juve would have needed a win to secure anything, if anything.
So yes he had a bad game against Bayern, but come on, you guys should know how valuable Buffon has been had you watched even one game outside of the Bayern game this season.
Buffon best blooming keeper in this world. Fact!

Buffon is not having a dip in form. He has a knee problem and the 2 first goals are definitely defensive problems. he saves the ball and no one is there to clear it..
