  • Live Commentary

    Time:90'
    • Birmingham City
    • Wolverhampton Wanderers
    • FT No late drama for Birmingham - they have hung on with ease and closed the gap at the top to just two points. Awful night all around for Wolves who are not promoted yet.
    • 90+1 There will be three extra minutes.
    • 90' Another Wolves corner comes to nothing as we enter stoppage time.
    • 89' Wolves still lacking in ideas. Birmingham defending deep but defending well.
    • 87' Larsson doesn't return with Bouazza coming on.
    • 85' Larsson launches at a few tackle but he looks to have pulled something in doing so.
    • 83' Stunning save from Taylor - Jarvis is given too much space to cut in from the left - he fires a bullet at goal but Taylor flicks it over with a smashing save.
    • 82' Ridgewell gets a header on a corner at the other end but it is straight at Hennessey - sloppy defending from Wolves again though.
    • 82' The Birmingham fans think it is over - they are doing a conga in the stands.
    • 81' Vokes and Keogh finally create a bit of space - decent ball from Vokes too but Jarvis just can't get enough on it.
    • 80' Taylor has been very solid as he gathers another ball but Wolves are just not putting him under enough pressure.
    • 78' Keogh tries to turn and curl in the area a la Macheda but his shot is blocked by Jaidi.
    • 78' And Wolves do nothing with the corner as Taylor gathers.
    • 77' Stephen Carr has been superb tonight and Jarvis has to settle for a corner as the Irishman deals with his trickery.
    • 74' Lots of noise coming from the home fans here - Wolves are just doing nothing here and it is a bit of a cruise for Birmingham.
    • 71' Jarvis runs down the left but his low cross is cleared and then Keogh can't even get a cross in moments later again down the left.
    • 69' GOAL FOR BIRMINGHAM - and it is another shocker for Wolves - a long ball - Berra lets it bounce - his head back to Hennessey does not have enough power on it and O'Connor nicks it past Hennessey before putting it into the net.
    • 69' Harewood tries to power into the box from the edge of the area but he is crowded out and McFadden nicks the ball.
    • 68' Jarvis whips in a decent free - but Birmingham head it away - it comes out to Foley but his shot is deflected into the arms of Taylor.
    • 65' Another Birmingham chance - O'Connor gets his head on a long ball - the Wolves defenders just look at each other and Larsson gets in to fire over the bar. Awful second half performance from Wolves so far.
    • 64' McFadden takes the ball down superbly and plays in Bowyer - the former Leeds man fires on target and Hennessey has to make a smart save.
    • 63' Wolves make their final change - big Welsh striker Sam Vokes comes on with countryman David Edwards sacrificed.
    • 62' O'Connor nearly put through but is JUST offside as Birmingham continue to look dangerous on the break.
    • 60' Wolves not doing enough here to get back into the game - if anything Birmingham look as likely to score. The pitch is not helping - it is terrible and passing is tough.
    • 58' Hennessey can only kick into the stands after another short back pass.
    • 57' Birmingham make a change with O'Connor on for Jerome who we hear is unwell.
    • 56' Keogh pushes Jaidi into Taylor and Jaidi goes down like a tonne of bricks - he is fine though!
    • 53' Karl Henry with a silly push on Murphy and he gets a yellow card.
    • 52' Wolves again get in each others way at the back before finally clearing.
    • 50' Again the ball drops for Jones on the edge of the box and again he can't get a clear contact on the shot - Wolves beginning to take charge though.
    • 49' Jones slices a shot up in the air as Wolves look to work an opening on the edge of the Birmingham box.
    • 48' Jerome playing up front on his own now for Birmingham and he is always a danger. Wolves need three men to get the ball off him in the box.
    • 46' Back underway and both teams have made a change at half-time. Kevin Phillips who never got a kick is off for Birmingham with the fit again James McFadden coming while Wolves bring on Matthew Jarvis for Matt Hill. Jarvis will play on the wing with Ward dropping to full-back you would imagine.
    • HT And there is the half-time whislte - Birmingham a man down but a goal up! Still all to play for.
    • 45+4 GOAL BIRMINGHAM!!! Bit of a shocker from Hennessey - Carr put in a long ball - both Jaidi and Ridgewell get heads on it but then Hill looks like he is just going to let Hennessey take it. The Welshman is hesitant though and CAMERON JEROME is able to just bundle it in from a yard out.
    • 45+3 Berra keeps putting his arms out on Ridgewell before the corner but he gets away with it. The corner eventually fizzes clear of danger.
    • 45+2 Larsson decided to cross and Hennessey comes a long way and does just enough to push it out for a corner.
    • 45+1 Jerome fouled just a few yards outside the area - a little to the right - chance for Birmingham here.
    • 45' Harewood gets his head on a ball into the box - it comes down to Ward but he can only fire his shot into his own man.
    • 42' St Andrew's gone a bit quiet - although the Wolves fans are making a lot of noise - they are angry with Carsley's tackle and rightly so. Alex McLeish won't be able to complain or appeal that decision.
    • 40' Iwelumo goes off on a stretcher - Mick McCarthy has now lost BOTH his main strikers with Ebanks-Blake out before the game - Irish international Andy Keogh comes on.
    • 37' LEE CARSLEY SENT-OFF - straight red for the Birmingham captain for putting his studs in Iwelumo. Mark Halsey took his time making the decision but it was the right decision. Horrible tackle and Iwelumo is still down.
    • 36' Birmingham need to mark Iwelumo closer on Ward's long throws - another warning sign has just passed.
    • 35' Birmingham have a decent counter chance but Fahey sees his cross deflected out for a corner and the Blues do nothing with that.
    • 34' Excellent from Foley as he checks onto his left and delivers a great ball - Iwelumo heads it over but he should have left it for Ward at the back post. Did Ward give him a shot though?
    • 32' Neither side can get the ball on the ground here - typical derby - fast, furious and lacking in quality.
    • 30' Birmingham feel Larsson is fouled by Carr on the edge of the area but the referee says no dice!
    • 29' Long ball from Carr and Phillips springs the offside trap but then his first touch lets him down - the pitch might have caused that.
    • 27' Mick McCarthy is furious as the referee misses a blatant handball.
    • 25' Larsson decides to shoot and tries to curl it into the near top corner - Hennessey scampers across but it goes just wide.
    • 25' Larsson with a chance to put in another ball from a dangerous area after a foul from Berra.
    • 24' Now Iwelumo comes close - he just out powers Ridgewell and then fires into the side netting.
    • 22 Stephen Ward owes Wayne Hennessey a drink - Ward under pressure from Carr makes a mess of a back pass to his defenders and Jerome is away - Hennessey comes out though and gathers the ball as the striker tries to round him. Jerome gets the rebound too but can only shoot wide off balance.
    • 21' Jaidi lucky not be booked after a very heavy challenge on Hill.
    • 18' Birmingham with a free to the right of the box - Larsson curls it in - it hits a Wolves head and could have been awkward but Hennessey is alert.
    • 16' Good work from Birmingham down the left but this time Craddock does very well to stick a leg out and clear the cross.
    • 15' Wolves earn a free five yards out and to the right of the Birmingham box - Jones curls it over the wall but there is no power on it and Taylor saves with ease.
    • 14' Not the best clearance from Craddock but he gets away with it as Fahey's cross has too much juice on it.
    • 13' Jerome nearly found in the box before he is crowded out.
    • 11' Match been played at a very fast tempo early but it has been scrappy too.
    • 10' Iwelumo could be key for Wolves tonight and says this match shows how far the club have come
    • 8' With two big men up front Wolves are looking to use the long-ball - Iwelumo has just held the ball up well - he checks it back to Ward who whips in a good ball. Edwards comes rushing in again and puts a decent header wide.
    • 6' Everyone getting a little excited - even the ball-boys!! Two balls on the pitch for a moment.
    • 4' Wovles have their first moment - Iwelumo flicks on a long thrown and Edwards nips in before firing over.
    • 3' All Birmingham in these early stages as Wolves struggle to settle.
    • 2' Wolves make a bit of a meal of trying to deal with a long ball into the box - Jerome tries a bicycle but it goes well over.
    • 1' And Birmingham get us underway in front of a red hot atmosphere at St Andrew's.
    • - A minutes applause for Jeff Hall - a Birmingham legend who died 50 years ago today when aged just 29.
    • - If Wolves win tonight then the Premier League surely awaits but Birmingham are still very much on the bubble - check out the Championship table
    • - Birmingham meanwhile start with Kevin Phillips and Cameron Jerome up front - Garry O'Connor and James McFadden are both on the bench.
    • - Championship player of the year Sylvan Ebanks-Blake is OUT of the match so Wolves bring in an Aston Villa man - on loan Marlon Harewood to partner Chris Iwelumo.
    • - It is the biggest Championship match of the season and we have FULL live comments for the occasion - a derby but more important a massive match in the race for the Premier League.
  • Summary

    • 83' Stunning save from Taylor - Jarvis is given too much space to cut in from the left - he fires a bullet at goal but Taylor flicks it over with a smashing save.

  1. Who the @#$% r Wolverhampton?

Look upwards and you'll see them - THEY are Champions, NOT you!

So, if Blades beat nothing-to-play-for Palace, you'll need an away win at everything-to-play-for Reading.

Hmmmm, makes for a very interesting final day of the season - could go either way.

  5. Have to agree with comment 108!
Wolves, Blues, and Albion are all extremely capable Championship sides, but whether any of them can cut it in the Premiership is a different matter! Let's face it, the top Premiership sides are worlds apart from where we are now. All the Midland sides can hope for is to avoid relegation in the first year, and hope to consolidate after that. As a Wolves fan, I'd still like to see all the Midlands clubs in the Premier League giving the Midlands a decent representation at the top level. Blues have been there, and held their own for a few seasons, until they had a bad run. Then they got rid of Brucie - and look where he is now! I know there's a lot of competition amongst the various fans, but I'm sure most would agree with my sentiments.

  8. oh yea - and another point - why is it that the wolves team were so @#$% tonight? They weren't exactly overstretched were they - playing mid week games (behind closed doors and getting players injured obviously didn't help - but was there a behind the scenes plan???? why is it that just as they seem to be progessing that both the 'manager and owners' seem to back track and say to other teams 'AND THE OFFICIALS' --- PLEASE LET US STAY IN THE CAMPIONSHIP'.......... oH YEA - THEY DON'T WANT TO LIVE UP TO SIR JACK'S LEGACY OR THE PROMISE THAT WAS MADE!!!

  9. O.K. - so how much did blues pay wolves..... not for the victory, but to field the 1st team instead of the 2nd team they fielded in wolves 2-0 match in January??? And what is it with the 'officials' these days when they can't give an obvious hand-ball or foul? And then let a goal???
