  • Live Commentary

    Time:90'
    • Newcastle United
    • Sheffield Wednesday
    • 94' The full-time whistle goes and it's finished Newcastle 1-0 Sheffield Wednesday.
    • 92' It looks like Newcastle are going to make it two wins from three league games, while Wednesday's search for a win will encompass a fourth match.
    • 89' There will be four minutes of additional time to be played at St James'...
    • 88' We're about to see another substitution for the home side. Danny Guthrie is about to make his first appearance of the season. Ryan Taylor is the man to make way.
    • 87' Change for Newcastle. Goalscorer Ameobi walks off to a rousing reception from the home fans. Nile Ranger is his replacement.
    • 86' What a chance to equalise for Wednesday! Jeffers is denied by a great save from Harper.
    • 85' Johnson takes the fight to Newcastle and it takes a great intervention from Smith to block.
    • 83' Steven Taylor is carded after the defender brings down Tommy Miller, who's certainly been in the thick of it since coming on.
    • 79' Francis Jeffers is about to be introduced. James O'Connor, who appears to have picked up an injury, is the man to make way.
    • 78' Wednesday have had no shortage of possession but still lack a cutting edge in spite of the best efforts of Jermaine Johnson.
    • 77' Gutierrez comes to belated life with a couple of runs at a retreating Wednesday defence but clear-cut chances remain at a premium.
    • 75' Miller goes into the book straight away for a foul on Jonas.
    • 71' Double change for the visitors. Etienne Esajas and Tommy Miller are on for Michael Gray and Sean McAllister.
    • 67' Gutierrez's cross is left by Ameobi but Ryan Taylor can't hit the target - it's the home side first meaningful attack in quite some time. Wednesday are forcing the pace, albeit not altogether convincingly. Incidentally, the attendance tonight is 43,904.
    • 66' Michael Gray takes a shot from distance but the ball ends up going out for a throw in level with the edge of the 18-yard box. The home fans enjoyed that!
    • 64' From the subsequent free-kick, Michael Gray forces a great save from Harper.
    • 64' Alan Smith is very fortunate to stay on the field after bringing down Darren Potter. It could quite easily have been Smudger's second yellow card.
    • 60' I have it on very good authority that Danny Simpson is about to appear on our team line-up. A victim of the space-time continuum no more.
    • 58' We have a change for Newcastle. Carroll, who has put himself about in his usual fashion, is being replaced by Xisco.
    • 55' Without wishing to be accused of bias, Ameobi appears to me to have reverted to type by being needlessly caught offside.
    • 54' geraldmanterfield, me and you just aren't going to get on! Apologies to readers, we are indeed lacking a Danny Simpson at right back in the Newcastle line-up.
    • 52' Great save from Grant who, left-handed, tips over a free-kick from deadball exponent Ryan Taylor. The resultant corner comes to nothing.
    • 51' A fairly inauspicious start to the second half. Neither side seem quite at the races. We must conclude that Chris Hughton is no Churchill!
    • 47' Marcus Tudgay brings down Danny Simpson for a free-kick to the home side. It's been the Wednesday man's only involvement so far.
    • 45' And we're off - there are no changes to either side.
    • - At last! Newcastle are back out and the second half will be underway shortly.
    • - We're still waiting on Newcastle. I can only assume that Chris Hughton is conducting a Churchillian teamtalk.
    • - Wednesday are back out on the pitch for the start of the second half, with the visitors awaiting the re-emergence of the home team...
    • - Garry k - debutant Danny Simpson is in at right back. Hope he can do better for you guys than he did at Blackburn last season when, quite frankly, he was a liability. geraldmanterfield - I strongly refute your claims of idiocy!
    • 47' Phil Dowd is good to his word and, after two added minutes, brings play to a half-time halt.
    • 45' There'll be two minutes of added time to be played at the end of the first half.
    • 42' Johnson is the man most likely for the visitors. He sets up James O'Connor but Kevin Nolan is there to block.
    • 40' Five minutes to go until half-time and Newcastle look by far the more threatening. Wednesday have been decent up to a point. The point being the edge of the home team's penalty area!
    • 39' Great tackle from Richard Wood denies Andy Carroll after the striker picked up a pass from Ameobi. He's a lot more than a goalscorer, is Shola!
    • 38' Do our Newcastle readers think there'll be any more major departures from the playing staff between now and August 31? Gutierrez or Coloccini perhaps? You can but hope!
    • 35' Ameobi the Championship's Pele! I like it, resentdtox, I like it a lot!
    • 30' McAllister drags an effort wide after more impressive approach play from Johnson. The Owls are enjoying decent spells of possession. They're yet to test Steve Harper though.
    • 28' Lee Grant dives to his right to stop a header from Shola Ameobi after Ryan Taylor had drifted in a free-kick.
    • 26' You do wonder with Coloccini, surely he can't be as bad as he looks! The guy's an Argentina international but even in The Championship he continues to get found out.
    • 25' Coloccini is yellow-carded for holding back Johnson.
    • 22' There's been a slight lull in the game. Wednesday are arguably playing the better of the two teams, with Michael Gray and Jermaine Johnson particularly influential, but you do feel that there is a lot more to come from The Magpies.
    • 17' Wednesday boss Brian Laws is protesting about the goal but it looked as though Ameobi took it down via his shoulder, hence the goal is just, even it came slightly against the run of play.
    • 15' GOAL FOR NEWCASTLE! Ameobi fires low past Lee Grant. There was suspicion of handball as he controlled a pass from Carroll but there was no doubting the finish.
    • 15' Alan Smith is the first player to be shown a yellow card by referee Phil Dowd.
    • 10' The visitors miss a glorious opportunity. Johnson tees up James O'Connor whose shot is blocked. The ball falls invitingly for Sean McAllister but he fires over. It's been a good start from Wednesday.
    • 8' Boos for Michael Gray every time he touches the ball. Wednesday's midfielder is, of course, ex-Sunderland. It was Gray's pass through that released Johnson.
    • 7' Wednesday are nearly in but Jermaine Johnson shows a little bit too much of the ball to Steven Taylor and the Everton target clears the ball behind for a corner...
    • 5' Newcastle make a mess of a decent shooting opportunity from a free-kick. Jose Enrique scuffs his effort and Shola Ameobi can't follow up to any effect.
    • 2' Wednesday's boisterous support are housed up in the St James' rafters but are making plenty of noise early on.
    • 1' And we're off. Newcastle are in their famous black and white stripes. Wednesday in their less traditional colours of yellow and blue.
    • - This is Wednesday's first visit to St James' in almost a decade. On their previous visit they were walloped 8-0 in the late great Sir Bobby Robson's first game in charge of The Magpies.
    • - They're expecting a crowd of about 40,000 tonight as the two teams emerge out on the pitch to an enthusiastic welcome.
    • - Here are the important bits regarding tonight's line-ups as anticipation builds at St James' Park ahead of kick-off. Newcastle, who remain under the caretaker charge of Chris Hughton, have named Manchester United loanee Danny Simpson in their team for the first time. Simpson replaces the injured Joey Barton, with Ryan Taylor expected to populate the right side of midfield. Wednesday boss Brian Laws has made no changes from the team which drew 1-1 at Peterborough on Saturday as he looks to find a winning line-up for the first time this campaign.
    • - The teams are in from St James' Park and they read as follows: Newcastle United: Harper; Coloccini, S Taylor, Enrique, Nolan, Simpson, R Taylor, A Smith, Gutierrez, Ameobi, Carroll. Substitutes: Guthrie, Xisco, Geremi, LuaLua, Krul, Kadar, Ranger. Sheffield Wednesday: Grant; Buxton, Purse, Wood, Spurr; McAllister, O'Connor, Potter, Gray; Johnson, Tudgay. Substitutes: O'Donnell, Hinds, Simek, Beevers, Miller, Esajas, Jeffers.
  • Summary

    • 86' What a chance to equalise for Wednesday! Jeffers is denied by a great save from Harper.
    • 15' GOAL FOR NEWCASTLE! Ameobi fires low past Lee Grant. There was suspicion of handball as he controlled a pass from Carroll but there was no doubting the finish.
    • 10' The visitors miss a glorious opportunity. Johnson tees up James O'Connor whose shot is blocked. The ball falls invitingly for Sean McAllister but he fires over. It's been a good start from Wednesday.
