    • FT AND THERE IS THE FINAL WHISTLE! Classic away performance from Newcastle - it wasn't pretty but they have got the three points.
    • 90+4 Mellor gets a late shot on target - but it is straight at Harper.
    • 90+3 Lovenkrands plays in Gutierrez. AWFUL finish from the Argentine though.
    • 90+3 Fans splilling out here now. Preston have failed to put any late pressure on.
    • 90+1 There will be four extra minutes for Preston to try and find something.
    • 90' Lovenkrands comes on for Guthrie to help wasted a little time.
    • 89' Good defensive work from Ranger breaks up an attack. Everyone digging in for Newcastle.
    • 88' Time running out for Preston. They have never really looked like scoring so it is looking grim.
    • 86' Preston with a free in a decent area but it fails to beat the first man.
    • 85' Long throw into the box almost falls to Chaplow but Newcastle clear and Gutierrez can lead a counter attack.
    • 84' Newcastle just looking to hang onto the ball now and see out the clock.
    • 83' Tonge puts a ball into the box but it is too high for Parkin.
    • 83' Shot number three on target for Newcastle but it is a poor, weak effort from Ranger.
    • 81' Preston rolling the dice. Sedgwick off and Jon Parkin comes on.
    • 80' Mellor and Brown link up well and it comes out to Chaplow but he drags an awful effort wide - that was a chance and you would have expected better from Chaplow who has been one of Preston's best players tonight.
    • 79' Eddie Nolan finds himself in space in the box and fires a shot on target but it is straight at Harper and he can bat away.
    • 78' Ball drops to Mellor in the box but he cannot get a shot away. Lacking in conviction again from the former Liverpool striker.
    • 76' Billy Jones fires a poor shot well over the bar. Preston's poor run looks like it might be about to continue.
    • 75' That was just Newcastle' second shot on target all match - but that is all you need.
    • 74' GOAL FOR NEWCASTLE!!!!!!! IT IS KEVIN NOLAN...the ball was dinked into the area from Guthrie and the ball dropped across the side of Nolan, he turned back onto it and placed it into the corner of the net. Superb finish - his eight league goal of the season.
    • 74' Preston take off Davidson and bring on Eddie Nolan.
    • 72' Gutierrez with a great run on the counter attack but then a touch from Ranger takes it away from Guthrie.
    • 70' Decent little spin from Ranger on the edge of the box and he then curls his shot wide of the target.
    • 69' Newcastle give the ball away to Parry but he has no options ahead of him. Brown has a bandage on his head now.
    • 67' Chris Brown covered in blood after catching Smith's elbow. Again the referee believes it was not intentional which is lucky because Smith is on a yellow card.
    • 66' Mellor gets in behind Taylor and looks all set to score but he fires wide past Harper when he looked all set to score. Best chance of the match.
    • 65' Young Hungarian Tamas Kadar is on for Danny Simpson who might have picked up a knock.
    • 65' Enrique flashes a cross into the box but there is too much on that for Harewood.
    • 63' Well it has gone very drab again. Both sides are cancelling each other out to be honest.
    • 61' Andy Carroll's shift is over and serial sub Nils Ranger comes on.
    • 59' Carroll tries another shot from distance but it is blocked before even reaching the box and then his long haired friend Gutierrez flashes another poor effort across goal moments later.
    • 57' Tongue drives forward with purpose but then he overhits a pass forward.
    • 56' A beach ball enters the pitch but it is quickly removed. Take note Liverpool fans.
    • 55' Chilvers heads another Simpson cross away. The Manchester United loanee can put in a good cross.
    • 54' At the moment you have given the match a rating of 5.1/10 and that sounds about right to me. Why not vote on the right hand side of this page.
    • 53' Decent low shot from a free by Parry - again though it is too straight and Harper can save.
    • 52' Enrique with a fizzing shot from long range. It hit off his own man Kevin Nolan though and went wide.
    • 51' Chilvers not in the mood for taking early risks as he clears a low Harewood ball out for a corner.
    • 50' Newcastle have to defend a corner and then a cross from Parry as Preston look to take a grip of this game.
    • 49' Lonergan gathers a good ball in the air with Taylor lurking behind.
    • 48' Positive start from both sides to the second-half. Carroll has just cut in from the left and tried a low shot into the near corner. It goes wide though and Lonergan had it watched.
    • 46' Bad news for Preston - Mawene was forced off after that challenge with his goalkeeper just on the stroke of half-time. Liam Chilvers comes on.
    • 46' And we are back underway....
    • - Just showing replays of an incident just before the break when Andy Carroll went in with what looked an elbow on Neill Collins - he is lucky the referee did not see that.
    • 45+1 Lonergan and Mawene crash into each other with Harewood looking to get in between them. Mawene is hurt and needs treatment as the referee blows for half-time.
    • 45' Preston finishing the half stronger. There will be one extra minute.
    • 44' Poor defending from Newcastle after a long throw. Sedgwick checks it back to Mellor who side-foots a tame shot on target. That was a chance but Mellor needed to put more meat into it.
    • 43' Chaplow tries a shot from distance that flies over the bar after Guthrie had given the ball away cheaply.
    • 42' Decent build up play from Newcastle but then Harewood flash a cross to nobody across the box.
    • 41' Mellor gets in ahead at the near post and turns a shot wide after a good low cross from Sedgwick.
    • 40' Preston earn a couple of corner and look dangerous but then Mawene overcooks a cross. That is why he is not a full-back!
    • 39' Mawene again gets in ahead of Carroll and that leads to a counter attack.
    • 37' Decent build up by Preston but while Brown works and angle he can get now power on the shot. He had Sedgwick to his right but did not see him.
    • 36' And at the other end Preston back off Smith and he is allowed to shoot from distance but it goes wide of the target. He should have done better.
    • 35' Brown with a good deep cross to the back post and Parry gets a decent header on it that just hits the roof of the net. Harper might have got there if it was on target but a decent moment for Preston.
    • 34' Jones tries to skip by Enrique and the Spaniard lets him because there is no space there and it goes out for a Newcastle goal kick.
    • 32' Key header away from Mawene after a great ball into the box from Danny Simpson from the right.
    • 31' Decent ball whipped in at pace from Preston's right and Parry gets his foot on it - but under pressure - he cannot find the target.
    • 29' Paul Parry with an AWFUL corner that just flies past everyone and goes out for a corner. Alan Irvine does not look pleased!
    • 27' Lovely build up play from Newcastle and Gutierrez is found inside the box - he skips by Chaplow and then looks set to fire a shot but he then loses control at the key moment and the chance passes.
    • 26' Nolan smashes a half-volley into the ground but it is blocked by Chaplow. That might have been on target otherwise.
    • 25' Lonergan comes out to try and claim a free kick but does not get there. Carroll gets his head on it first but it goes well over the bar. It was tough - he had his back to goal.
    • 23' Nice lay off from Brown to Mellor but then the former Liverpool man scuffs his shot well wide of the target.
    • 22' Well it seems to be a case of the (text)commentators curse. It has all gone a little dull since I said it was exciting.
    • 20' Preston looking good down the right side but Brown has just put a poor cross over from there that goes high and wide.
    • 19' So a lot more even now. The tackles starting to fly in too - good stuff for the fans.
    • 17' Mellor gets a shot away inside the box from a tough angle - Harper makes a smart save but a decent effort.
    • 16' No surprise to see that Alan Smith is the first man in the book for crashing into Sedgwick who was going for a header.
    • 16' Ball drops to Tonge 25 yards out and he tries a fizzing half-volley but that screws wide of the target.
    • 15' Chaplow with a good low strike that is deflected just wide of the target. Preston having some joy down the right now.
    • 14' Nolan gets a shot in from distance. Too straight but it did bounce up just before it came to Lonergan so a decent save.
    • 13' Preston have a little spell in the Newcastle half for once but nothing comes from it.
    • 12' Dangerous ball in from Gutierrez towards Carroll but the striker was offside.
    • 11' The Toon fans in good voice as always - they will be happy with this start too. Preston have just not been able to get their foot on the ball.
    • 9' Enrique finds Guthrie in the box and the former Bolton man heads across goal but there is no yellow shirt there.
    • 8' Newcastle putting on the pressure now - the ball falls to Smith just outside the box but he cannot work the angle for a clear shot.
    • 7' Nolan dinks a little ball over the defence but it just skids forward a bit too much for Harewood.
    • 6' Tonge has his first run into the box in a Preston shirt but his cross bounces off a yellow shirt then back off him and out for a free out.
    • 5' Gutierrez's cross is deflected out for a corner. The Argentine was a doubt for this match but looked fresh on that run.
    • 4' Newcastle looking to get their passing game going now. Marlon Harewood holding up the ball well. Remember he was meant to be on the bench but Ryan Taylor was injured in the warm-up. Ryan Donaldson is the extra man added to the bench.
    • 2' Then at the other end some home fans want a penalty but Jose Enrique made a fair challenge on Neil Mellor.
    • 2' Half a chance for Newcastle already - they work a quick free-kick and Steven Taylor is found free at the back post. He tries a diving header but it gets got up in his body.
    • 1' And Preston have got us underway. Newcastle wearing that sickly yellow away strip of theirs tonight.
    • - Five changes for Preston who have not been in good form while Newcastle have new signing Fabrice Pancrate on the bench.
    • - Late change on the Newcastle team. Ryan Taylor has picked up an injury in the warm-up and now misses out. Marlon Harewood comes in with Kevin Nolan dropping back into midfield.
    • - Newcastle: Harper, Simpson, Steven Taylor, Coloccini, Jose Enrique, Ryan Taylor, Smith, Guthrie, Gutierrez, Nolan, Carroll Subs: Krul, Harewood, Lovenkrands, Geremi, Pancrate, Kadar, Ranger
    • - Preston team tonight: Lonergan, Jones, Mawene, Collins, Davidson, Sedgwick, Chaplow, Tonge, Parry, Brown, Mellor Subs: Henderson, Shumulikoski, Carter, Chilvers, Parkin, Nolan, Elliott
    • - Welcome to our LIVE coverage from Deepdale as Newcastle look to go back to the top of the Championship table. They need a win over Preston to do it though. Championship table

  1. It's a big dilemma, win the Coca Cola ( get promoted ) and we'll struggle again in the Prem because Trailer park Trashley won't spend any cash on players. But you always want to win, and when you're in the Coca Cola, you always want to get promoted. The Toon should be able to win this one by the odd goal though. P N E 1. The TOON 2

  18. Provided we can go into the Preston match with the same enthusiasm as the Peterborough match then we should be in for an interesting game. Preston have 6 wins behind them so they aren't to be underestimated. I just hope after 2 week off our boys don't come back complacent thinking were top of the league and Preston are mid-table. They will be a challenge.
