A first-half goal from Kevin Nolan gave West Ham a 1-0 win at Brighton and Hove Albion in a Championship match the hosts dominated. More
- Thanks for joining me tonight. West Ham did not look like title challengers on that showing but the Championship is all about the grind and it is a big win for them. Brighton, meanwhile, need to start looking at consolidating after that great start to the season comes to an end. Have your say about that match with me on Twitter.
90+9 Piquionne with a superb mazy run but a poor finish into row Z and that's it! West Ham win to go second! They rode their luck and Brighton will see this as three points thrown away.
89' Brighton have men over here but Noone with a terrible ball, awful about 10 yards behind Mackail-Smith who was in!
88' Noble releases Faubert who is in and curls it past Harper but Greer heads away! That was going wide but Greer had no idea. Should have scored!
83' BRIGHTON SUB: Finally Dicker is carried off, with Ryan Harley on in his place.
78' Something's seriously wrong with Dicker, who landed badly on his knee as he extended to try and intercept a loose ball. Oh dear.
75' Bridcutt is booked for catching Collison. One more booking for a Brighton player and they'll be in hot water with the FA for failing to control their players.
70' Dicker with a great ball through and Mackail-Smith is in but out flies Almunia to block and he takes the full weight of Mackail-Smith in the gut! Ow!
66' WEST HAM SUB: Piquionne is off the bench now, for Carew. Nice options for the Hammers, even with Cole out injured.
60' BRIGHTON SUB: Hoskins on for Barnes.
58' Carew wins a flick on and Faubert is in, he goes down and howls for a penalty but play on!
56' Brighton swarm forward again but Faye hoofs clear. And now Sears picks it up, great run from him and Dunk clips him 25 yards out and he will be booked.
55' WEST HAM SUB: Sears races on for Diop, who has a dead leg. An injury but also a tactical chance as Sears is more a winger-forward than DM Diop.
53' Dicker's low cross takes a deflection and lands for Mackail-Smith but he wasn't expecting it, can't get the ball under control and West Ham clear!
46' The second half is underway.
45+3 Half-time and it's 1-0 to West Ham - Brighton livened up at the end of the half.
45+2 GREAT SAVE ALMUNIA! Mackail-Smith with the volley from close range after a loose ball lands to him in the box! Barnes feels he was shoved by Reid as the Kiwi cleared the loose ball.
44' Mackail-Smith pressurises Reid, who feels he was pushed but is able to knock it behind for another Seagulls corner. Swung far post but too far. Dicker picks up the loose ball but elects to shoot - wrong decision. Noone get hold of it on the right though, cuts inside on to his left AND HE DRIVES A SHOT IN but wide with Almunia covering it well enough.
42' Super cross by Barnes under pressure at a tight angle but Diop has all nine foot three of his frame in the way as Mackail-Smith was ready to pounce! Corner.
41' Corner taken short again and Bridcutt shoots but Carew puts his head in the way to divert wide for a corner! That is swung in and all kinds of problems for the Hammers, ricocheting around in the box and I think Carew clears with Jara flying in to finish!
40' Faye slips and Mackail-Smith is in! But Reid hurls himself in to block the shot, the crowd roar for a penalty but it seemed to hit his chest.
36' Yellow card for Greer for a late challenge on Carew after the Norwegian knocked it past him down the left wing.
30' Noble seems to have hurt his hand as he landed awkwardly while trying to block that shot. Dislocated thumb it seems, sticking out at a nasty angle.
19' Faubert clobbers Painter and enrages home players and fans. Yellow for him.
17' GOAL WEST HAM! Nolan with a thunderbolt from 20 yards after Bridcutt dithers and is cauight in possession by the former Bolton and Newcastle man. Poor control from the Brighton defender and dodgy positioning from Harper, who was rooted to the right-hand post and couldn't move in time.
13' Jara gives away a free-kick for a late stamp on Noble and is booked on his debut.
7' Mackail-Smith latches on to a lucky ricochet and he shows a great turn of pace and is in but Almunia shuts down the angle and the Scotland striker drills across goal and wide! First major chance.
1' The first half is underway on the South Coast.
19:15 TEAMS - Brighton: Harper, Greer, Dunk, Painter, Jara Reyes, Sparrow, Dicker, Bridcutt, Noone, Mackail-Smith, Barnes; Subs: Ankergren, Calderon, Harley, Hoskins, Buckley /// West Ham: Almunia, O'Brien, Reid, Faye, McCartney, Faubert, Diop, Noble, Collison, Nolan, Carew; Subs: Boffin, Baldock, Sears, Piquionne, Moncur
19:10 Some breaking news from the Championship - Leicester have sacked Sven-Goran Eriksson, according to widespread reports. This follows a 3-0 loss at home to Millwall. They are in the same position as Brighton though, mid-table and only a win off fourth place. Do you think it came too soon? Let me know what you think on Twitter!
