@ 80 and 82. I don't know what social circles you move in but this is a footy thread and we're talking about English commentators and English football fans and 99% of us wouldn't dream of pronouncing all the 'th-th-th's'. Indeed, if I or anyone I know started dropping them into a conversation they would probably get a slap or at the very least get the pish ripped out of them. We just don't it and more importantly, should not do it! The comment made about the pronunciation of 'Garcia' is an interesting one. Only in the 14 or so years I've been watching Sergio Garcia play golf, I have never, EVER, heard an English speaking commentator, pundit or fellow player, whether they be English or American, refer to him as 'Garthea'. To a man they pronounce his name, 'GAR-CEE-A!!! So stop talking out of your arthes.
Watching Italy outclassing Spain and creating so many clear-cut chances, oh how I longed for a Roberto Baggio/Christian Vieri/Alessandro Del Pierio/ Gianfranco Zola/ Chiesa kinda magic up front. This would have been a real horrific tale to tell, but it seems Italy's undoing won the match for Spain. This match should never have gone to extra-time. I hope both teams have drawn lessons from this, especially Spain, for I need them to silence Neymar& Co to show them that there's really nothing to them except for Marcello.
italy shoudve won blad
Barry, your point is SOOOOO moot. 'Garthea' instead of 'Gar-cee-a' is the difference between Spain's spanish and latinamerican spanish (respectively), both being spanish!!!. Garcia pronounced in English has NOTHING to do with either of these pronunciations. Icing on the cake, just as others say, IT'S A NAME!!!!!....DAMM RIGHT IT SHOULD BE PRONOUNCED as CLOSE AS POSSIBLE TO ITS SOUND IN ITS ORIGINAL SPANISH.
why did El Shaarawy not start hes played great all season and you dont play him? and people say that Englands manager sux
Oh Barry, yes, the way you read 'Garthea' in English is exactly how the Spanish name García is pronounced, Same goes for Himeneth, as the correct way for an English speaker to pronounced Jiménez (as Spanish J is pronounced as a strong English H). The journalist did the right thing, it's not lingo it's pronouncing a foreign name correctly. It doesn't cease to amaze me how those who only speak English proudly make a fool of themselves about things they know nothing about.
Again Barry you only show ignorance and the fact that you don't speak any foreign language. A person's name must be pronounce correctly, how it's is originally pronounced. Period. If things were like you say, a person's name "should" be pronounced in hundreds of different ways depending on the native language of the person who pronounced it.
the two best goalkeepers in the world couldnt save a single penalty?
Spain not scoring I was shocked then I saw the line-up. #$%$ is Torres doing there ??????
@65 Goodnightmoon, I'll tell you why it it should be pronounced in English because he's an English commentator and we're an English speaking audience and any attempt at using any pseudo foreign language you care to mention sounds ridiculous. If I was in Spain and talking to someone Spanish I would attempt to say any Spanish word correctly. IE, 'nah-vahs not nay-vahs'. On meeting someone I would also say 'hola' but I wouldn't dream of saying 'hola' para phrasing the word to someone that was English, I would say 'hello'. Michael Buerk, one of our greatest ever newsreaders who worked for the BBC and read the news to the nation pronounced foreign words and peoples names as they appeared In English so why should I or any other English speaking Englishman do it differently? It's like the word 'Ajax'. Any Dutchman you meet that speaks English will pronounce it 'A-jax', so why the hell do commentators and pundits insist on saying, 'Hi-ax'? Surely it should be a case of 'when in Rome?' Mind you, it could have been worse. That two hat Jonathan Pearce could have been on the mike. That bloke takes annoying commentary to a whole new level. 'Garthea' instead of 'Gar-cee-a' and 'Himeneth' rather than 'Jimenez' are just two of a whole host of embarrassing attempts to speak the lingo that Pearce frequently makes. God forbid that he ever commentates on La Liga games. I'd probably end up thelf harmeenga.
Spain never played well at all, during the 90 minutes but what tenacity and courage they have to steal it in the end.Well done Spain:)
they needed balotelli the steroid muncher!!
I think both teams played really well but in the end Italy ware like an old lady walk from shop to her home. They ware too tired & they had no energies in the end. But against Spain like R Madrid play vs Barsa to hit them with counter attack. This was J Morinou tactics.
If Spain plays the same way in the final..They will be destroyed..
brazil 4 spain 2 in the final lol lol
There must be a better way to decide than penalties
we have all tested high class football tonight,
true champions spain they fight to finish.what a game.
