Not hopeful for 2018 bid

Thu Nov 19 12:43PM

Football Association chairman Triesman I cannot say that I am overly confident looking at England's 2018 World Cup bid.

From what I have seen in the media, it appears there are a number of nations ahead of us in the reckoning to host the tournament.

From my first-hand experience of the game in this country, I can say it is an absolutely fantastic place for such a tournament to be held, with some of the world's most passionate fans supporting the effort.

In time, the bid will gain momentum - and it would be fantastic to see a World Cup here in 2018. However I have no burning desire to be involved in the bid and think it is best left to the people who have the experience at that level to deal with pushing it forward.

It is difficult to compare the facilities in this country against those of other countries as I am much more aware of the ins and outs of what we have available here than anywhere else.

I can say that the facilities here are fantastic with all a player's needs catered for, be it in terms of training facilities, hotels to cater for international teams travelling, or nutrition to supplement the game.

The standard of preparation and care around the game in this country is exceptional.

The World Cup would be fantastic for the game at grass-roots level, as when any sporting event takes place in this country the excitement surrounding it is fantastic.

If you look at Wimbledon, the knock-on effect for tennis at grass-roots level is great - and I believe the same would happen for the World Cup.

There would be a real desire to get involved and engage with the sport and that would be fantastic for the game.

I would love to be a coach and manager in the future: it is a dream of mine. I do not envisage becoming the manager of England in the future at this stage; but who knows.

I am currently doing my badges and working towards becoming a coach, and with the 2018 World Cup a long way away, lots of managerial changes can happen before then.

  1. Fifa can go and take a hike. They can come to us, to host the world cup. Cheats.

  2. Forget spending money on a world cup campaign, just throw a few bungs to the people at the top, that's how things work at FIFA (pronounce thief-A).

  12. During the taxi ride from the johannesburg airport to the bus station, we passed some workers on the side of the road with shovels, not many, people but enough to ask the driver what was going on. He told use they were building the underground train for the World Cup. Ha! That was laugh. Maybe I could host the next one in my back garden.

  14. Why bring the World Cup here when nobody will be able to afford to buy a ticket. By 2018 a burger at Wembley will be about £40. Why bring it here when half of the games are meaningless. Nice to win a ticket with the Carling competition. Guess what game? New Zealand v Sierra Leone. Magic!!!!!!!!
