ED particularly enjoys the fact that no fewer than three managers have backed themselves to reform Barton, as though the proverbial kick up the backside or arm round the shoulder were going to make any difference.

Clearly, Barton is no more a professional footballer than Amy Winehouse is a singer or Paris Hilton an actress.

His appeal to the general public lies in the fact that: a) We've heard of him, and b) He's always getting into trouble. Always.

His misdemeanours have gone from the cheeky (mooning Everton fans, slagging off Frank Lampard, er, stubbing a cigar out in somebody's eye) to the criminal.

He obviously needs sustained professional help away from the limelight, and the best way for that to happen would be for Newcastle to end his contract.

Then hypocrites like ED might stop pretending to care about Joey Barton's welfare while giving his massive piles of dirty laundry a public airing.

It's not necessarily the kind of reaction you're looking for when you spend £7m on a new midfielder, but dannydwilton's comment at the bottom of this website's "Deco signs for Chelsea" article neatly sums up the fans' view from Stamford Bridge.

"Holy ****!!! This is terrible!! Lampard's definitely going to leave us now!! We've brought a second rate granddad!!! Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...!!!"

In the publicity shots of an increasingly rotund Peter Kenyon greeting the new acquisition, Chelsea might as well have replaced Deco with a big sign saying "Goodbye Frank".

- - -

Nothing summed up Andy Murray's stubborn refusal to fit the 'Great British Hope' stereotype better than his post-match press conference last night.

Murray sent Centre Court out of its usually genteel mind with a brilliant win in the dark against Richard Gasquet - a good way to enforce your home advantage; maybe if England had switched off the floodlights at 2-2 against Croatia they might have been playing some football last month.

Then he blew it by facing the media with a plate of sushi, which he proceeded to demolish with a pair of chopsticks.

Of all the ways to slap Middle England in the face.. do you know what kind of muck they put in sushi? It's raw fish, you know.

If that were Tim Henman, he'd be there with fish and chips wrapped up in a copy of the Daily Mail, gamely fielding questions about Agincourt.

But here was Murray with his crazy hair, foreign food and dodgy accent, using words like "awesome". Even Greg Rusedski pretended to be posh, but it seems Murray just won't conform. Ungrateful so-and-so.

- - -

VILLAIN OF THE DAY: If you had lost as many finals as Michael Ballack, you'd think you would have learned to be a good loser. Apparently not, as Ballack refused to hold up a banner thanking Germany fans for their support at Euro 2008, apparently on the basis that they were tacky.

Team manager Oliver Bierhoff said: "We had a strong and emotional discussion. The German Federation wanted the team to pay tribute to our supporters. Michael didn't like the banners and thought they were inappropriate."

FOREIGN VIEW: "National Party!" screams Marca - sounds like a Chevy Chase film or a far-right political movement. Nobody has told Catalan daily Sport, whose website leads with a story on Ronaldinho, who attempts to allay fears over his attitude by appearing to say that he has always been unprofessional, so don't worry.

TALKING POINT:

jilly_marsh on Euro 2008: "Thank god it's over. Now I can watch some proper TV." Not if Andy Murray has anything to do with it.

moody_tariq asks how ED fared in its Fantasy Euro game. Fourth in its nine-team superleague, since you ask. It was gunning for a top-two finish before a catastrophic decision to select the entire German 11 for the final.

yorgos_tm points out that apparently England haven't won anything for a while: "I can't believe it......what kind of STUPIDIOTS are writing those miserable and real rubbish articles? but I suppose there are lots of people out there happily reading it I guess.....and it's so evident the eternal envy towards the german team and the frustration is 100% understandable of course...HEY how many european or world tittles got the english team? ha ha hah ha ......that explain a big deal isn't it?" Stupidiots is a good word, though.

Today - What one transfer would you most like to see this summer?

By the way, message to Rafa Benitez - if you think that streaky piece of p**s (known to the leymen as Peter Crouch) is worth over £9m when Deco signed to Chelski for £8m, then i'm afraid the most useful thing you can do next season is quite simply f**k off. Lots of love, Harry Redknapp. X

  12. firstly @ drenniefins1 we have always had alex we loaned him out for 3 years and then brought him back when we needed him. ben haim came in on a free transfer and shev has been underplayed and injured so get you facts straight.your conclusion that man united are the best in the world is wrong on two accounts
    1. how can a club be the best when they rely mainly on one man to be their team?
    2. how can a club be the best if they fail to perform in the beginning of the season ? get shown up by some supposed minor clubs in the prem and not have a clear cut gap at the end of the season?
And save your barnsley comments i couldnt care less!

@jacknofor who are you to slag off a man like ballack who captains his countrys football team, consistantly performs and gets so much dissapointment in life ....he's had a tough draw of cards thats that....and as for the comment about accomplishing more in life i take it back seeing as i don't know what you have done.....

  17. Interesting football-related sushi story for you, (not factually checked, i read it on the fabulous Holy Moly) someone e-mailed to say they had just returned from holiday where they got talking to Stevie G and his missus. The conversation turned to food and the couple were raving about a new sushi bar which had just opened, to which Alex Curran replied "Steve and i love Sushi, we always ask for it well done". If it's true (and let's face it, it sounds like it could be) it's brilliant.

As for transfers i hope Celtic get Pavlyuchenko but 7m is a bit steep.

I hate Man Utd too mate.. but they've been the best in england in recent history simply because they've been winning things and the rest of the big boys have been fairly inconsistent in that time. how u start the season means nothing. it's how you end it that matters. if you play pretty football but finish empty handed then the start means sod all mate.

I agree with Dan, 42 goals from one man, not including all his assists. Last minute lucky equalizers from Tevez all season long. Your luck will run out ManU.

  22. yoon3ek, a player like any product is worth exactly how much someone else pays for it, (and often less) but never more. I can see you're a Liverpool fan so I won't go into any further as Alonso does have quality, but the EPL has been littered with failed "gifted" players from other leagues that allow more space and time on the ball. But there are always exceptions, look at Zola as one of the few successful Italians in England.

ballack has obviously learnt to deal with dissapointment finishing runner up so many times can only make a man stronger....i'd say what happend last year was underusage of quality players eg sheva, SWP, malouda....sheva for a man that barely played last season due to injury or not being used knocked in 8 goals....in playin 400 odd minutes for the entire season id say that very good. poor SWP was playing very well until grant got into his head to stop using him . malouda went thtough the general transformation period last season he may have scored 4 or 5 goals only but just remember he spent his entire career in france he got used to frances style of football he needed to break out of that mould...id say his best for chelsea is about to come

  28. @alexanderfarinelli .. all fair points. it takes more than just talent to be a success in this league. the likes of shevckenko is walking proof. LOL. Alonso did well because he is an intelligent midfielder. that's why I think Deco can succeed too. look at Fabergas. physically he's a lightweight and not too quick either. but his intelligence and temperament means he rarely gets caught with the ball and when he gets knocked.. he stays in control and doesn't allow anything to put him off his game. I guess we'll just have to wait and see if Deco turns out to be another overpaid wuss..!
