ED particularly enjoys the fact that no fewer than three managers have backed themselves to reform Barton, as though the proverbial kick up the backside or arm round the shoulder were going to make any difference.

Clearly, Barton is no more a professional footballer than Amy Winehouse is a singer or Paris Hilton an actress.

His appeal to the general public lies in the fact that: a) We've heard of him, and b) He's always getting into trouble. Always.

His misdemeanours have gone from the cheeky (mooning Everton fans, slagging off Frank Lampard, er, stubbing a cigar out in somebody's eye) to the criminal.

He obviously needs sustained professional help away from the limelight, and the best way for that to happen would be for Newcastle to end his contract.

Then hypocrites like ED might stop pretending to care about Joey Barton's welfare while giving his massive piles of dirty laundry a public airing.

- - -

It's not necessarily the kind of reaction you're looking for when you spend £7m on a new midfielder, but dannydwilton's comment at the bottom of this website's "Deco signs for Chelsea" article neatly sums up the fans' view from Stamford Bridge.

"Holy ****!!! This is terrible!! Lampard's definitely going to leave us now!! We've brought a second rate granddad!!! Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...!!!"

In the publicity shots of an increasingly rotund Peter Kenyon greeting the new acquisition, Chelsea might as well have replaced Deco with a big sign saying "Goodbye Frank".

- - -

Nothing summed up Andy Murray's stubborn refusal to fit the 'Great British Hope' stereotype better than his post-match press conference last night.

Murray sent Centre Court out of its usually genteel mind with a brilliant win in the dark against Richard Gasquet - a good way to enforce your home advantage; maybe if England had switched off the floodlights at 2-2 against Croatia they might have been playing some football last month.

Then he blew it by facing the media with a plate of sushi, which he proceeded to demolish with a pair of chopsticks.

Of all the ways to slap Middle England in the face.. do you know what kind of muck they put in sushi? It's raw fish, you know.

If that were Tim Henman, he'd be there with fish and chips wrapped up in a copy of the Daily Mail, gamely fielding questions about Agincourt.

But here was Murray with his crazy hair, foreign food and dodgy accent, using words like "awesome". Even Greg Rusedski pretended to be posh, but it seems Murray just won't conform. Ungrateful so-and-so.

- - -

VILLAIN OF THE DAY: If you had lost as many finals as Michael Ballack, you'd think you would have learned to be a good loser. Apparently not, as Ballack refused to hold up a banner thanking Germany fans for their support at Euro 2008, apparently on the basis that they were tacky.

Team manager Oliver Bierhoff said: "We had a strong and emotional discussion. The German Federation wanted the team to pay tribute to our supporters. Michael didn't like the banners and thought they were inappropriate."

FOREIGN VIEW: "National Party!" screams Marca - sounds like a Chevy Chase film or a far-right political movement. Nobody has told Catalan daily Sport, whose website leads with a story on Ronaldinho, who attempts to allay fears over his attitude by appearing to say that he has always been unprofessional, so don't worry.

TALKING POINT:

jilly_marsh on Euro 2008: "Thank god it's over. Now I can watch some proper TV." Not if Andy Murray has anything to do with it.

moody_tariq asks how ED fared in its Fantasy Euro game. Fourth in its nine-team superleague, since you ask. It was gunning for a top-two finish before a catastrophic decision to select the entire German 11 for the final.

yorgos_tm points out that apparently England haven't won anything for a while: "I can't believe it......what kind of STUPIDIOTS are writing those miserable and real rubbish articles? but I suppose there are lots of people out there happily reading it I guess.....and it's so evident the eternal envy towards the german team and the frustration is 100% understandable of course...HEY how many european or world tittles got the english team? ha ha hah ha ......that explain a big deal isn't it?" Stupidiots is a good word, though.

Today - What one transfer would you most like to see this summer?

  1. im sorry for not spelling my words properly just a bit tired considerin its 6 in da mornin! but you cant say Man Utd only had one, your just picking the best from a bunch of 15-16 players thats like me saying, oh liverpool have 1 player-torres, arsenal have 1 player-fabregas nd so forth. Ronaldo didnt help us with having the best goals against record!!! did he? rooney was a workhorse all year and he will get his goslscoring touch back next season with or without ronaldo mind you i hope he stays, cause if we get another 42 goals out of him wed be laughing our way to another league!!! and tevez is a magician, tap ins??? how did sheva score his, off his knee!!! man utd all the way man

IMO he should never ever be allowed to play professional football again.
Its time the authorities stood up to this thug. He's a disease on society.

  3. I'd like to see all those "Johnny" foreigners sent back to their homelands before the World Cup in 2010 in order to stop the England team from being so tosh...

Of course, what I'm really looking forward to is the look on everyones faces when the England team are still, quote-a-red-top, "surprisingly" tosh...

Of course then I'm sure Mr Capello will be transfered out and Alan Shearer fresh from 2 years "experience" of hosting something like the National Lottery promptly installed in his place...

Of course when we're still tosh, I'm sure we'll all be there throwing the welshies and the scots back over their borders, and seeking out those with "impure" blood...

    Shot in the dark...

    We're still tosh.

  6. Firstly, Barton IS a professional footballer, Winehouse IS a singer (the best british female vocalist since Dusty-and no mistake)- I will give you the Hilton jibe as she is clearly NO actress. The point I hope ED is making, is that celeb criminal offences should be given equal credence to the man on the street and both should be jailed for their dispicable activiites- both have had numerous chances to reform and have chosen not to. Proper sentences should be enforced. Remember, Barton has repeatedly indulged in vile, violent actions that I believe deserve lengthy sentences. As for Wino (what a singer), tis difficult to believe she did not know of hubby's pay off scam. If your partner wanted a quarter of a mill you would want to know what the money was for, wouldn't you? Barton and Civil are both guilty of violent and brutal crimes and such leniency only highlights a passive legal system that allows these appalling crimes to go virtually unpunished. Actually, I don't think this was the point ED was trying to make-it has turned into a rant- a reaction to the appaling, violent death of another young Londoner!

  8. Gareth Barry to STAY AT VILLA. and that's coming from a Liverpool fan. he just isn't worth 18 mil. I wouldn't even pay 12. The fact is he has quality but no pedigree. and in case anybody wants to argue.. pedigree is nothing to do with talent. it's to do with experience. he has very little at the highest level. look at Spain in the euros. Fabergas can match any of the rest for ability but not in experience so he was used as a sub. just like Messi in the last world cup. Barry COULD do well at Liverpool but fact is.. he isn't worth 18 mil. benitez is trying to buy a good player.. not investing in a future world beater like he has with Torres.

Barry IS NOT WORTH 18 MIL. end of..!!

  9. drenniefins1:
both Chelsea and United have loads of young talent, but these youngsters will more than likely never make it big in the first team, because of other talent will be brought in. Arsenal is the only team in the Prem that mixes youth/talent with the first team....but look at what they've won: NOTHING. United have a great squad, but they were hardly convincing during the Prem campaign (went down to last day, and Chelsea had a bunch of injuries/manager changes), AND you @#$% were one Terry slip away from not being European champions! Face it, it was a lucky campaign!

    1. Messi to Celtic (with a huge wage cut etc cos we cannae afford him)
    2. Francesco Totti to Celtic cos he'd look even better in hoops! (as messi)
    3. Kris Boyd from Rangers to anywhere cos he's their only decent player!
    4. Schweinstieger to Celtic (also with a wage cut!)

There you go ED that's my dream summer transfers buut to be perfectly honest I don't hold out any hope of any of them happening, even Kris Boyd look like he'll probably stay at Rangers! Nevermind though... :(

that was in the 90's! It's 2008 mate! This past year SAF was able to bring in young talent (Nani, Anderson) with the intention of playing them because he had a few hardy veterans in the side (Giggs, Scholes, Ferdinand). Guys like Frazier Campbell, Welbeck, and Manucho will never break through.
Ben Haim, and Sidwell were signings that were made because Chelsea had spent a F uc K ton the past two seasons. Chelsea already had the players, they were just looking for depth. (Injury crises always happen come December/January with Chelsea)

  18. Pizzaro was also free. And he was brought in cause he could play in a 4-3-3. He is actually a decent player but you have probably noticed strikers always struggle at Chelsea. I think its because of there style of play. That is how Lamps got a lot of goals. now Chelsea are trying to change that. If a player with Shevas finishing ability played for Man u then he would get loads of goals, even if you think he is past it.

Chelsea had a pretty easy CL campaign, but to come through the Prem campaign, CL, and make the LC final given all the turmoil and unrest was pretty good. My point now is, United better get their act together because next year other sides are gonna get the rub of the green!
