ED particularly enjoys the fact that no fewer than three managers have backed themselves to reform Barton, as though the proverbial kick up the backside or arm round the shoulder were going to make any difference.
Clearly, Barton is no more a professional footballer than Amy Winehouse is a singer or Paris Hilton an actress.
His appeal to the general public lies in the fact that: a) We've heard of him, and b) He's always getting into trouble. Always.
His misdemeanours have gone from the cheeky (mooning Everton fans, slagging off Frank Lampard, er, stubbing a cigar out in somebody's eye) to the criminal.
He obviously needs sustained professional help away from the limelight, and the best way for that to happen would be for Newcastle to end his contract.
Then hypocrites like ED might stop pretending to care about Joey Barton's welfare while giving his massive piles of dirty laundry a public airing.

It's not necessarily the kind of reaction you're looking for when you spend £7m on a new midfielder, but dannydwilton's comment at the bottom of this website's "Deco signs for Chelsea" article neatly sums up the fans' view from Stamford Bridge.
"Holy ****!!! This is terrible!! Lampard's definitely going to leave us now!! We've brought a second rate granddad!!! Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...!!!"
In the publicity shots of an increasingly rotund Peter Kenyon greeting the new acquisition, Chelsea might as well have replaced Deco with a big sign saying "Goodbye Frank".

Nothing summed up Andy Murray's stubborn refusal to fit the 'Great British Hope' stereotype better than his post-match press conference last night.
Murray sent Centre Court out of its usually genteel mind with a brilliant win in the dark against Richard Gasquet - a good way to enforce your home advantage; maybe if England had switched off the floodlights at 2-2 against Croatia they might have been playing some football last month.
Then he blew it by facing the media with a plate of sushi, which he proceeded to demolish with a pair of chopsticks.
Of all the ways to slap Middle England in the face.. do you know what kind of muck they put in sushi? It's raw fish, you know.
If that were Tim Henman, he'd be there with fish and chips wrapped up in a copy of the Daily Mail, gamely fielding questions about Agincourt.
But here was Murray with his crazy hair, foreign food and dodgy accent, using words like "awesome". Even Greg Rusedski pretended to be posh, but it seems Murray just won't conform. Ungrateful so-and-so.

VILLAIN OF THE DAY: If you had lost as many finals as Michael Ballack, you'd think you would have learned to be a good loser. Apparently not, as Ballack refused to hold up a banner thanking Germany fans for their support at Euro 2008, apparently on the basis that they were tacky.
Team manager Oliver Bierhoff said: "We had a strong and emotional discussion. The German Federation wanted the team to pay tribute to our supporters. Michael didn't like the banners and thought they were inappropriate."
FOREIGN VIEW: "National Party!" screams Marca - sounds like a Chevy Chase film or a far-right political movement. Nobody has told Catalan daily Sport, whose website leads with a story on Ronaldinho, who attempts to allay fears over his attitude by appearing to say that he has always been unprofessional, so don't worry.
TALKING POINT:
jilly_marsh on Euro 2008: "Thank god it's over. Now I can watch some proper TV." Not if Andy Murray has anything to do with it.
moody_tariq asks how ED fared in its Fantasy Euro game. Fourth in its nine-team superleague, since you ask. It was gunning for a top-two finish before a catastrophic decision to select the entire German 11 for the final.
yorgos_tm points out that apparently England haven't won anything for a while: "I can't believe it......what kind of STUPIDIOTS are writing those miserable and real rubbish articles? but I suppose there are lots of people out there happily reading it I guess.....and it's so evident the eternal envy towards the german team and the frustration is 100% understandable of course...HEY how many european or world tittles got the english team? ha ha hah ha ......that explain a big deal isn't it?" Stupidiots is a good word, though.
Today - What one transfer would you most like to see this summer?
i like dat guy jude he take sense, i c abramovich has moved on to paintins, he mite sell chelsea 2 buy his nxt 1 hahahaha
Lampard sucks!
Ballack sucks!
Drogba sucks!
here we go again with slagging off roman.....what about man utd's rich american owners huh? would you guys be able to pay off ronaldo and rooney and the likes their 12000+ pounds a week? no so shut up because roman's been good to us!
Coq-monsieur.... red card yourself, now I'm just guessing that there was a certain amount of irony at play in ED's journalism there - I think it is more 'Little Britain' Daily Mail readers that he's having a go at than Andy Murray...... now if that's too complex a concept for you to understand, never mind eh?
Henrik I'm hoping Roxy might think I'm tough if I wear this heavy helmet and the stuffed shirt.
Hey marc if ur having those three as cheerleaders I think we should have some male ones at Parkhead a bit of half time entertainment that doesn't involve fumbling about in ur bag for the bloody sweepstake ticket or shaking hands with "Hoopy" the Huddle Hound! not that I don't love Hoopy, I got his autograph and a picture
he's great! I'm not entirely sure what a guy cheerleader could do so I'd just want them to absail down from the roof and stand there like in Diet Coke adverts!
You shut up danni boy! United did fine without the Glazers, hence still loads of animosity towards him, unlike Chelsea that knew they couldn't get half decent players without paying the double what they're worth.

haha at least im not the only one then claire!
i play no.7 for my club (refuse to play otherwise!!) cos of king cantona. wot a player! he would look good in tangerine, it would be the perfect place for him! if only we had taken him over from france in the first place, we would of been kings of scotland for the whole 90's!
haha nice Jude, always on yer toes!
dannick: Roman has been good to Chelsea financially but he got rid of Mourinho! And yes, unfortunately me being a Juventino this means Inter's south american cheats will have even more success!
I've got two words for all you Mancs: THE GLAZERS!
Pele bringing viagra to keep Stoke up might be our best hope.
Jude - you're right to say Chelsea would be screwed without the Russian money but where would United be if it hadn't been for Fergie? Would they be the club thet are now? Would the likes of Scholes, Giggs, Beckham etc have come through the youth ranks? Would the scouting network that spotted Ronaldo, Stam, Schmeichal etc be in place? Both Unitd & Chelsea owe a lot of their success to individuals
I'm not entirely sure even king Eric would have made much difference but then again who knows! He was fantastic, loved it when he took penalties, sent the keeper the wrong way every time!
Double post, ED probably thought I had a good point.
Chelsea suck nearly as much as Arsenal, who suck nearly as much as Spurs, who suck nearly as much West Ham, who suck nearly as much as Fulham, who suck nearly as much as Derby. Get the point - London clubs suck!
i cnt go to sleep, dis jude guy is on fire iv to stay up 2 watch this, go toronto fc
danny dichio, maurice edu nd oliver tebily nd former leeds(newcastle) cosch john carver.
I hope sheva has an amazing season if he stays, he is a legend and not past it, chelsea is a very difficult team for strikers to get some support!
yah he's on fire alright. he's a flamin queer.
Chris I agree, Fergie is a big part of United's success.
He is still there because he is passionate about the club, not because of money. What an export form the people of the North! If only he managed England at some point we might have won something.
jude point being money is what runs this world and the football world it's sad realy and it goes to show that clubs like man city are going to be the ones to watch in the future they currently have the best acadamy and look who they've churned out...ireland...richards...sturridge the list goes on...and now theyve got the money to boot now from frank shinawatra could it be that the man city are going to be the club to break the top 4 in the next couple of seasons ? i think so . and how will it be done? the same way that man utd did it with young uns coming from their acadamy.
I had a dream last night that I broke Fergie's mobile phone while he was waiting for Ronaldo to phone him. He surprisingly calm about bit though...
Liverpool suck!
here is henrikwatever ALF STEWERT from home nd away - flamin hell irene
dannickbates knows nothing about football. the girl is from south africa. get on the unicef bus and fetch me a zebra u trash talkin zulu
henrikedwardlarsson up yours!
damdesign66 your ignorance knows no bounds shut up and do your research you racist fruit cake
Man City will still stuggle to get top players to go there, with their average team and dodgy owner.
Man City sucks!
marc those are really dream transfers.Nonetheless it shows your die hard support for Dundee.that's real commitment to the team you support
now now Jude. lets not get all fiesty, i was just having a laugh...haven't had a right go at you for some time now!
drenniefins1: what does this mean?:here is henrikwatever ALF STEWERT from home nd away - flamin hell irene
I know you must be tired mate, but I can't make anything out of this mess
Ronaldinho? why not? especially when it's monopoly money they're playing with. maybe deco won't shine in the premiership, but he's a proven european performer, and 7 million is a steal ~ roman lights his cigars with less. who cares how they spend their money, it's printed on toilet paper ~ he could waste two hundred million pounds this transfer season and not lose a wink of sleep. he could afford not only to get barton cleared of all charges, but knighted by the queen!
dont matter who comes or goes its allways going to be united
