ED particularly enjoys the fact that no fewer than three managers have backed themselves to reform Barton, as though the proverbial kick up the backside or arm round the shoulder were going to make any difference.

Clearly, Barton is no more a professional footballer than Amy Winehouse is a singer or Paris Hilton an actress.

His appeal to the general public lies in the fact that: a) We've heard of him, and b) He's always getting into trouble. Always.

His misdemeanours have gone from the cheeky (mooning Everton fans, slagging off Frank Lampard, er, stubbing a cigar out in somebody's eye) to the criminal.

He obviously needs sustained professional help away from the limelight, and the best way for that to happen would be for Newcastle to end his contract.

Then hypocrites like ED might stop pretending to care about Joey Barton's welfare while giving his massive piles of dirty laundry a public airing.

It's not necessarily the kind of reaction you're looking for when you spend £7m on a new midfielder, but dannydwilton's comment at the bottom of this website's "Deco signs for Chelsea" article neatly sums up the fans' view from Stamford Bridge.

"Holy ****!!! This is terrible!! Lampard's definitely going to leave us now!! We've brought a second rate granddad!!! Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...!!!"

In the publicity shots of an increasingly rotund Peter Kenyon greeting the new acquisition, Chelsea might as well have replaced Deco with a big sign saying "Goodbye Frank".

Nothing summed up Andy Murray's stubborn refusal to fit the 'Great British Hope' stereotype better than his post-match press conference last night.

Murray sent Centre Court out of its usually genteel mind with a brilliant win in the dark against Richard Gasquet - a good way to enforce your home advantage; maybe if England had switched off the floodlights at 2-2 against Croatia they might have been playing some football last month.

Then he blew it by facing the media with a plate of sushi, which he proceeded to demolish with a pair of chopsticks.

Of all the ways to slap Middle England in the face.. do you know what kind of muck they put in sushi? It's raw fish, you know.

If that were Tim Henman, he'd be there with fish and chips wrapped up in a copy of the Daily Mail, gamely fielding questions about Agincourt.

But here was Murray with his crazy hair, foreign food and dodgy accent, using words like "awesome". Even Greg Rusedski pretended to be posh, but it seems Murray just won't conform. Ungrateful so-and-so.

VILLAIN OF THE DAY: If you had lost as many finals as Michael Ballack, you'd think you would have learned to be a good loser. Apparently not, as Ballack refused to hold up a banner thanking Germany fans for their support at Euro 2008, apparently on the basis that they were tacky.

Team manager Oliver Bierhoff said: "We had a strong and emotional discussion. The German Federation wanted the team to pay tribute to our supporters. Michael didn't like the banners and thought they were inappropriate."

FOREIGN VIEW: "National Party!" screams Marca - sounds like a Chevy Chase film or a far-right political movement. Nobody has told Catalan daily Sport, whose website leads with a story on Ronaldinho, who attempts to allay fears over his attitude by appearing to say that he has always been unprofessional, so don't worry.

TALKING POINT:

jilly_marsh on Euro 2008: "Thank god it's over. Now I can watch some proper TV." Not if Andy Murray has anything to do with it.

moody_tariq asks how ED fared in its Fantasy Euro game. Fourth in its nine-team superleague, since you ask. It was gunning for a top-two finish before a catastrophic decision to select the entire German 11 for the final.

yorgos_tm points out that apparently England haven't won anything for a while: "I can't believe it......what kind of STUPIDIOTS are writing those miserable and real rubbish articles? but I suppose there are lots of people out there happily reading it I guess.....and it's so evident the eternal envy towards the german team and the frustration is 100% understandable of course...HEY how many european or world tittles got the english team? ha ha hah ha ......that explain a big deal isn't it?" Stupidiots is a good word, though.

Today - What one transfer would you most like to see this summer?

  1. Actually Sav, polls of experts and fans alike choose Wenger above everybody else. Arsenal play some of the best football Ive ever seen. Trouble is they aren't connsistent cos, like Liverpool, they haven't got the squad depth due to the money being ploughed into the new stadiums and won't break their wage structure to keep the players they bring on. But they will win something again very soon.

  3. i dont 100% agree with you danny but you do make a good point.
arsenal do play fantastic stuff. i also admire the fact that they can produce world class players and keep them happy for a long time e.g. henry & vieira, without breaking the bank. But, being the best is about winning so there is none better than sir fergie. he hasn't always broke the bank, he bought keane relativly cheap, cantona for a bargain and scholes, giggs, neville etc were youth products. so looking at that, sir fergie didnt spend alot to create arguably the best man utd team ever and dominate the 90's.

  5. marcgrant I couldn't agree more. The Red Devils from the 90s were out of this world! And when SAF did start spending he almost stuffed it up (read: Veron!) I think lately he had to start spending to match Chelsea, Real, Milan, Liverpool etc.

  10. Mourinho is the best. He single handedly made the EPL a better league. I dont agree with anyone sayin that any team buys a league or buys titles. Every team that buys a player is buying someone who makes them better so if that helps them win anythin then technically they have bought it. Im not sayin Wenger aint good, hes a bit of a @#$% n far too stuborn but Ive never seen any kind of poll sayin he's the best. fair enough if there is 1

  11. Marc, considering Alex Ferguson himself said that his current side was the best Manchester Utd team he's ever had he certainly didn't spend lightly there. I couyldn't agree more that grabbing Cantona for a cool million was a stroke of genius. But I'm not sure SAF can take the creditr for the likes of Scholes, Beckham et al in the 90s. With examples like that its very easy to forget just how much money he has spent. Even forgetting Veron you have £30m for Ferdinand, £26m for Rooney. Then Anderson etc recently. I'm not saying any of this is bad, but just wonder how much Wenger would have won with a similar budget?

  14. "I dont agree with anyone sayin that any team buys a league or buys titles." Well, you're entitled to your own opinion, but teams have certainly done it in the Prem, prime examples being Blackburn and Chelsea. Of course, everyone is buying players, but these two bought them in heaps(Ranieri bought quite a few and Mourinho didn't exactly stop). United have been buying a lot and breaking transfer records as well, but they don't come across so badly because they have still have some academy-grown talent and only buy 1 or 2 big money players per season(last year's 3 in Nani, Anderson and Hargreaves was the most they've brought in, I believe).
Re Wenger: he didn't build a team that will win a big trophy year in, year out, but he's built a real football brand - and has spent significantly less than United, Chelsea, and probably even Pool.

2)Etoo to Man Utd (the only good striker not being linked with them yet)
3)Ronaldo (Christiano) to Barcelona (its his dream to play in spain, have a feeling he means by spain getting more paid while doing less effort)

  21. Great post is_spc. Sav you don't agree? Well youre entitled to your opinion. But if teams don't buy titles what happens when the money is gone (Blackburn) and will happen when the money is gone (Chelsea)? Man Utd have the fan base to generate their own income and will be successful for some time to come. With or without Ferguson. But if you want a real football club generate its success through shrewd investment and top management watch Arsenal. Or Liverpool if you have to. Even Spurs would do for me.

And the money Liverpool have spent of late has been pretty well thought out. Who wouldn't want Torres in the side? Besides I like Rafa. He delivered the CL against all odds.

i think you are bang on there mate.
i think when real madrid were buying the 'galacticos' sir fergie didnt want to left behind, hence 30m for veron, 27m for ferdinand, and nearly 30m for rooney. ok, he got veron horribly wrong but i think if one man is entitled to a mistake its sir fergie. i hear wot you are saying danny, and i think wenger is a brilliant manager and tactician. but you're forgetting what fergie achieved before he ever went to man utd, without a penny. he beat real madrid in a cup winners cup final with aberdeen (i know, aberdeen!!) and along with dundee united dominated scottish footabll in the 80's. that is a truly remarkable feat and he has got to be the best, there cant possibly be an arguement.

  29. Well, Rafa brought the CL, fair enough. But his goal has to be to win the Prem, and he's not getting even close. I'm very interested in his transfer moves this season. Torres and Babel were always going to be good buys, but Rafa has made quite a few flops - most of the Spanish contingent didn't really perform(why is Xabi Alonso a sub, though, I ask), Pellegrino, Voronin.

And Spurs really ought to be top 5 at least(they've spent some big money too, mind, although not really comparable with the big boys), we'll see whether they can make it in Juande Ramos's first full season at the helm. I like them but am not sure whether the Spanish/South American invasion planned by Ramos is really going to work out for them, especially with Berbatov outbound for United.

  30. Eh if your sayin buyin leagues is possible then ur sayin Liverpool dont. Well they tried to and still couldnt!

My point was, evry year someone wins the league and every year that team will have signed a player therefor they would have technically bought the league. the big teams sign the big players cause they want to be better, so as they can win the league. thats how football works!

When money is gone in Chelsea someone else will buy them. What happens when money is gone in Man U or Liverpool. These clubs are in more debt than Chelsea are they not? dnt quote me in case im wrong
