Corluka and Mandzukic both got fouled in the penalty areas, two penalty kicks, Croatia wins the game. The ref who "refed" during the game was actually suspended for the rest of the cup. Shows you that he sucked, doesn't it? The refs were against Croatia, Croatia should have won.
@M, do you call trying harder having your team be heavily fouled two times in the penalty box but not get the call any of those times? Mandzukic got fouled in the beginning of the game in the penalty box, and that was supposed to be a penalty kick for Croatia. And then Corluka got wrestled down to the ground in the penalty box when he was going for a header, and that should have been another penalty. I'm quite sorry, but Croatia did all they could, i blame it on the stupid nazi refs!!! I know i will get thumbed down by some users for saying this, but i am speaking the truth, and only Stupid Spaniards will want to deny that Croatia (a micro-state) would have beat their team, the "defending champs".
spain was bad they just pass the ball a thats it croatia was better on counter attack spain didnt even have 2 chances in the game and the goal was offside and the refere screwed croatia two penalties and rakitic should have scored that goal dont like the way spain plays dont like their style i hope germany destroys them in the finals and italy got outplayed by irish croatia should have gotten through
this is another big game decided by the official off side they just wanna give spain
Yes Spain are the winners again :)
There was no offside however what really baffles me is how on earth did the ref missed two penalty situations? First - Ramos fouls Mandzukic (straight leg, studs up, awful chalenge). And second - Busquets wrestles Corluka, who tries to score with a header (so sloppy by the Spaniard). I'm not saying that the ref was bribed (I don't believe he was), but surely he was not brave enough. I'm sorry for Croats because they showed a really beatiful football - very solid in defence and very creative in forward.
No offside, sorry. The rule is clear. Croatia, 8 players in front of goalkeeper....... this is not football.
I thought Croatia played very disciplined. Their defence never broke down. Spain relies on scoring goals when others make mistakes. As the game was coming to a close, Croatia had to change their game plan and take more risks or they would face elimination. These risks created more exposure at the back and this is what Spain had been waiting for the whole game and which they exploited. The whole game came down to the last 10 minutes. Waiting for Croatia to finally attack which is something they didn't want to do. Croatia was hoping in turn for a Spanish error. And would only more forward if there was a clear opportunity.
To be honest, it did look offside. However upon further inspection they made the right call. Here is how it works. 1) Fabregas flicks the ball in the air to Iniesta. At the time Fabregas makes the pass, Iniesta is onside. It is close but, he is definately onside. Navas, however, is clearly offside but he is out of play - so the ref rules play on! 2) Navas moves back behind Iniesta and is now onside. He is now eligible to receive the ball. Good call by the refs. Here is a wiki definition:A player is in an offside position if three conditions are met: first, the player must be on the opposing team's half of the field. Second, the player must be in front of the ball. And third, there must be fewer than two opposing players between him and the opposing goal line, with the goalkeeper counting as an opposing player for these purposes. It is not necessary that the goalkeeper be one of the last two opponents. Navas was behind the ball when he recieved it. Gaining an advantage by being in an offside position: Since offside is judged at the time the ball is touched or played by a team-mate, not when the player receives the ball, it is possible for a player to receive the ball significantly past the second-to-last defender, or even the last defender (typically the goalkeeper).
lol@croatian fans crying.
this will probably attract some abuse from the armchair experts but i also am confused with the offside rule. the Spanish player who scored the goal was not in an offside position when he received the ball but was in an offside position when the player who passed the ball to him received the ball. it was my understanding you could be judged offside if you were in an offside position during the move which resulted in you scoring the goal. there was a time when the offside rule was simple - you were judged offside if you were in an offside position when the ball was played forward even if you were not interfereing with play. some of the older among us might remember the famous words of Bill Shankly - ''if you are not interfereing with play what the hell are you doing out there!''
I watched Modric very carefully last night. He has a touch of the 'Berbatovs' about him. He is idle and only comes to life if the ball arrives at his feet. Man Utd should steer well clear of him. Let Al City or Chelski waste their money on him.
Torres back to his usual ineffective self. What kind of idiots would pay £50m for him?
fantastic performance by spain, croatia wasn't up for the toughness of international competition. great refereeing especially by the linesman, amazing decision with immense pressure at the pace of the game. it is funny how people think it was offside - people need to read the FIFA rule book before saying stupid things LOL
Go back home Croatia :D
@ Ivan talking about ref?? do you remember those 2 wrong offsides for Italy in the match against croatia??? lol these things happen in football. Get over it..Croatia must try harder!!
Jonathan Tamayo IF all 3 teams had finished with 5 points, none of the goals scored against Ireland would have counted toward the first set of tie breaks.
I am seriously done with soccer from now on. This fun sport, that's supposed to have refs that are fair, has turned into a mafia of highly paid corrupt refs that choose one team and don't like the other.
TOTALLY AGREE! 86' Rakitic with the corner. Busquets seemed to be fouling Corluka in the area, but the referee missed it. That could have been a penalty to Croatia.
Navas way off side when the ball was played forward to Iniesta. If Iniesta had shot on goal and scored I can understand not calling Navas off-side but to be the scorer of the goal than they've changed the meaning of the rule. Why not then just keep one player in an off-side position at all times and have him wait for a run by another player (i.e Iniesta) to receive the ball ahead of the defense and then get passed the ball?
