    • Benfica
    • 90+4' It's all over at Goodison where Benfica have won 2-0.
    • 90+2' Bilyaletdinov comes within inches of grabbing a consolation for Everton with a shot from 20 yards that skids just past the post.
    • 90+1' Benfica miss a late chance as Aimar turns and shoots over the bar from 15 yards.
    • 90' Baines thumps a free-kick into the Benfica box, but once again it is easily cleared.
    • 89' The fourth official holds up the board that shows there will be four minutes of stoppage time.
    • 88' Cardozo gives chase to a long-ball forward but Distin gets across to shepherd the ball out of play.
    • 86' Saviola comes off and is replaced by Felipe Menezes.
    • 84' Distin misses a glorious chance for Everton! The defender is left all on his own as the ball is played back into the Benfica box but his left-footed effort is turned round the post by the keeper.
    • 82' Bilyaletdinov wins a throw on the left as Everton apply some late pressure in an effort to find a way back into the game.
    • 80' Everton make another change with Yakubu coming off for Kieran Agard.
    • 79' The Benfica keeper has gone down clutching his head after a challenge with Tim Cahill. It took him a while to discover the pain in his head after Cahill's challenge so it was probably just a little bit of time wasting.
    • 78' Hibbert goes into the book for a lunging tackle... he won the ball but it was possibly a little dangerous.
    • 76' Having seen the replay, I can definitely say that Cardozo was definitely offside and the goal should not have stood.
    • 75' Goal for Benfica! Cardozo makes it 2-0 with a neat volley with Howard going the wrong way.
    • 73' Saviola goes into the book for some over-exuberant protests.
    • 72' Goodison Park has gone a little quiet now, as if the home fans sense this game is drifting away from then.
    • 70' Jo gets his first touch but is quickly dispossessed and Benfica break down the right, with Aimar looking to link up with Saviola.
    • 68' Everton make a change with Jo replacing Dan Gosling.
    • 67' Tim Cahill wins a corner for Everton, but the delivery is again too deep and Gosling eventually runs the ball behind for a goal-kick.
    • 65' Saviola again threatens for Benfica, but his shot is this time deflected behind for a corner.
    • 64' Benfica have made a change with Pablo Aimar coming on for Coentrao.
    • 63' Everton will be kicking themselves with that goal. Di Maria was allowed to run far too far into their territory before feeding Saviola to find the net.
    • 61' Goal for Benfica! Saviola fires it low into the bottom corner after Di Maria teed him up.
    • 59' Angel Di Maria draws another good save from Howard who tips his shot from outside the area on the left over the bar.
    • 58' Everton win a freekick in a dangerous position in midfield but it is completely wasted.
    • 57' Yakubu tries to feed Bilyaletdinov in the channel but the Russian doesn't even make a run and gives Yakubu a stare as if to say 'what did you expect?'
    • 55' Di Maria wastes a brilliant chance for Benfica! He was played through the middle and bore down on goal before hitting it over the bar. Terrible miss, but justice is done after his play-acting only minutes ago.
    • 54' Everton win a freekick in midfield and ironic cheers ring out around Goodison.
    • 53' Coentrao has a stinging shot from outside the area but Howard is down quickly to make a comfortable save.
    • 51' Angel di Maria goes down clutching his leg under a challenge from Fellaini in a ridiculous attempt to get the player booked. This really is cynical cheating from Benfica.
    • 50' Rodwell goes into the book for a tug on the on-rushing Coentrao in midfield.
    • 48' Cahill makes up 30 yards down the left before the ball comes back to Rodwell whose ball into the box is overghit and back to the keeper.
    • 47' Di Maria chases a long ball forward but Yobo gets across to make an excellent tackle... the Benfica player stays down, but is quickly back on his feet when he realises he is not getting a freekick.
    • 46' And we are underway again in the second half...
    • 45' And the half-time whistle sounds at Goodison where it is 0-0 at the break.
    • 44' And that injury forces Benfica into an early change with Maxi Pereira coming on.
    • 43' Benfica's Javi Garcia goes down and then hobbles off the pitch with what looks like a groin injury.
    • 41' That was a top-class save from Howard to keep Everton in the game - the keeper dived to his left acrobatically to keep Saviola at bay.
    • 40' What an escape for Everton! Cardozo heads against the post and it rebounds to Saviola whose goal-bound volley is beaten away by Tim Howard.
    • 39' Benfica have a corner on the left but the delivery is poor and Cahill clears for Everton.
    • 38' Gosling is again sent tumbling to the ground on the edge of the Benfica box but once again the referee waves play-on.

    • 34' Jack Rodwell puts in an excellent tackle in midfield before striding forward and then hitting his shot well off target.
    • 33' Yakubu tries to play a one-two with Baines but his return pass is off target and Benfica eventually break.
    • 32' Cahill has a good chance for Everton - The Aussie rises to meet a great cross from Bilyaletdinov, but can't get enough power on his header and fails to beat the keeper.
    • 30' Benfica enjoy a spell of possession and Everton are chasing shadows.
    • 28' Everton almost get themselves into a right mess as Baines runs into Tim Howard as the keeper comes to claim a cross. Luckily it doesn't fall to a Benfica player.
    • 27' A deflected cross from Yakubu forces the Benfica keeper to back-peddle and tip the ball over his own bar.
    • 26' Baines launches a free-kick into the Benfica box but David Luiz heads clear at the far post.
    • 25' Fellaini flings a deep cross into the box that is hopelessly over hit and goes out for a throw.
    • 24' A ball through the middle is inches away from releasing Yakubu, who is flagged offside.
    • 22' Yakubu tries his luck with a turn and shot from the edge of the area but it is beaten away by Luisao.
    • 21' Everton create a bit of panic in the Benfica box that ends with Leighton Baines firing in a shot that is deflected away to safety. Rodwell follows up with a shot from distance that is high and wide.
    • 20' Jack Rodwell shows his ability with a neat turn before being brought down in midfield.
    • 19' Yakubu gets a yellow card for a very late and unseemly challenge on Ramires. He is possibly a little lucky to escape without a red.
    • 18' Baines launches a freekick upfield that goes to absolutely no-one and is through to the Benfica keeper.
    • 17' Benfica win a corner on the left, but the delivery is far too deep and easily headed clear.
    • 16' Gosling is tugged to the floor by Javi Garcia but the referee waves play-on.
    • 15' A Benfica attack peters out and Everton quickly launch a counter with Baines rampaging up the left wing.
    • 14' Yabubu turns superbly to beat Luisao but his shot is off target from a tight angle.
    • 13' Tim Howard is forced into a save from Angel Di Maria who volleys acrobatically towards goal from 20 yards.
    • 12' There's a spot of head tennis between the two teams and then Everton's Gosling is pulled up for a push.
    • 10' Everton break quickly and Yakubu crosses deep towards Gossling who seems to be impeded a little by Luiz.
    • 8' The ball is lofted into the box and Cahill gets on the end of it. He can't make a clean contact and the flag is up in any case.
    • 7' Fellaini wins a freekick for Everton as he is pulled from behind by Ramires.
    • 5' Yakubu tries to lift a cross over his head and into the box but it is hopelessly off target and goes behind to audible groans in Goodison.
    • 4' Benfica have a cracking chance to open the scoring as Saviola bursts into the box on the left and sees his shot palmed away at the near post by Howard.
    • 3' Fellaini has an early sniff on goal with a shot from the edge of the area that Julio Cesar saves comfortably.
    • 2' Benfica have begun confidently spraying the ball around the park.

  2. Clearly the best side won
Everton played with one man up front, on his own, I am a big fan of Yakubu but hr is clearly unfit.
Fellaini when he first got into the Everton team (likewise Cahill) were contributing goals last season but the goals have dried up and that means these two give the team nothing.
Everton need Saha fit and available as soon as possible.

Yes DIVING and CHEATING. Who do you think everyone is going to believe, the obvious TV slow motion replay evidence, or Figomoron the bigmouth? You ONLY won both games because EVERTON HAVE HUGE INJURY PROBLEMS. I know that is a bit complicated for a retarded boy to understand, but it's a FACT. BENFICA WOULD BE OUTCLASSED BY FULL-STRENGTH EVERTON.

From David, on Thu 5 Nov 10:42PM
  9. Everton, you played poorly this evening. Our players were ponderous and our lack of footballing skills was exploited by a good Benfica side that could have won by a much larger margin. If we do not improve immediately we shall lose against both West Ham and Hull and our season will be finished and I can predict that in April the Everton supporters will be crying.

With a full strength team Everton would have walked both games against Benfica, who showed their true colours tonight.. Diving, Faking serious injury, Shirt pulling, shoving, and reduced to long range shots hoping for deflections. Braindead fans. Second goal offside, countless obvious free kicks and two penalties ignored by a spineless ref who obv. is too scared to blow for fouls in the box. With late chances and a decent ref this one could easily have been 4-0 to Everton even with all the injuries. Bring back Arteta, Osman, Pienaar, Neville, Jagielka, Anichebe - Everton would be comfortably the best team in this competition. Athens and BATE have drawn which pretty much guarantees Everton progress, so the rest better pray their injury luck stays bad.
