  • Live Commentary

    Time:90'
    • Germany U21
    • England U21
    • 90+2' The final whistle goes, and everybody's a winner in Halmstad tonight - both England and Germany progress into the semi-finals.
    • 90' "We love you England, we do" is the chant from the England fans in the crowd as the fourth official signals two minutes of extra time. And well they might, their side look as though they will maintain their 100% record in this tournament.
    • 87' Walcott bursts forward but he's stopped in his tracks by the rather impressive Schmelzer.
    • 85' Aogo comes on for Ebert for the final five minutes plus stoppages.
    • 84' Marin tries to curl a shot inside the far post, but it's a couple of feet wide of Lewis's post.
    • 83' Germany look like a side that know a draw will be enough to see them through. Neither side is playing with the most ambition in these closing stages.
    • 82' Here's a pic of Jack Rodwell celebrating his goal.
    • 81' Johnson plays the ball out to Walcott, but the Arsenal man is forced back inside by Schmelzer.
    • 80' Beck chases a ball down to the corner and it takes two england players to dispossess him.
    • 80' Ebert is quick to react to to potential England break and tidies up before Walcott can pounce.
    • 78' What's that? You want to see how Spain are getting on in the other Group B clash? Oh, alright then: Finland v Spain
    • 77' England win their ninth corner. The ball comes all the way to the far post for Stearman, and his low strike is parried by the boot of Neurer before it can sneal in at the near post! Good save, but the keeper could have avoided it by coming out to claim the corner in the first place.
    • 75' Ozil turns and chips a cross in but it's cleared away and Walcott wins a free-kick in the centre circle.
    • 74' England have been on top for the past few minutes.
    • 73' Walcott proves a handful for Beck and Ebert has to come across and hack the ball clear.
    • 72' Marin fouls Rose on the right wing, and Gardner will take the promising set piece. The ball is flicked on and Johnson picks it up on the left. He tries to jink past Beck but the defender is all over it and wins the goal kick.
    • 71' Final change for England - Kieron Gibbs on for Andrew Driver, who has had a good U21 debut.
    • 70' Johnson sprays the ball out to Driver, who is tackled by Schmelzer.
    • 69' England are keeping possession tidily among the back four.
    • 67' Tomkins hauls Dejagah down on the left wing. Ben-Hatira is replaced by Marko Marin, the subject of much specualtion about his Bundesliga future. A move to Werder Bremen is apparently on the cards.
    • 66' Johnson pounces on a mistake by Ebert, but the eventual cross is an easy catch for Neuer.
    • 65' Ozil turns well and his shot from outside the area is deflected behind for a corner. Ozil will take it himself, and Howedes has free rein to storm in at the near post and head an effort wide.
    • 64' Rose sends a ball forward for Walcott to chase, but Schmelzer had enough of a headstart to get their before the Arsenal man.
    • 63' The tempo has dropped in the last five minutes or so.
    • 61' Ebert's strike from distance is blocked by Danny rose but the ball loops up and goalwards. Joe Lewis has his eyes on it all the way, and catches with confidence.
    • 60' Castro tries to dink a ball to the far post from the byline but Ben-Hatira can only slice it into the air on the volley.
    • 59' Ebert gets in fornt of Rose to intercept the pass from Johnson.
    • 58' Fraizer Campbell is the man to come off in place of Theo Walcott, who made such a contribution from the bench against Spain.
    • 57' Johnson loops a ball forward for Campbell to control with his back to goal. He holds off the defender well before laying the ball off to Rose, who sees his shot canon off a defender.
    • 56' Driver burst past Schmelzer and looks to deliver the ball... he'll have to make do with a throw-in.
    • 54' Rodwell intercepts a pass bound for Ozil, and the Germany forward stays down. Either Ozil landed awkwardly or he's making a meal of it.
    • 53' Rose aims to sprint forward with the ball, but his touch is heavy and he loses possession.
    • 52' Dejagah looks to run on to a loose ball but Lewis is off his line to collect.
    • 51' Germany have a free-kick on the left-hand side of the England area. Ebert blasts it high and wide of the far post, a real waste.
    • 50' Campbell nudges Howedes in the back as he presses the defender, and the linesman flags up for the infringement.
    • 48' By the way, Joe Lewis replaced Scott Loach in goal at half-time. No changes for Germany s yet.
    • 47' Johnson appeals to the referee that Beck was tugging his shirt out on the touchline, but the official didn't see it.
    • 46' England kick off for the second half.
    • 45+1' That's the final act of the first half in Halmstad.
    • 45+1' This time Craig Gardner's delivery is disappointing, hacked away at the near post.
    • 45' Johnson and Taylor combine nicely on the left wing and the Middlesbrough wins another corner.
    • 43' Driver is firtunate to win a corner when it looked as though he might have fouled Schmelzer. The set piece is palmed away by Neuer, and Driver is caught offside as the ball comes back in.
    • 42' Stearman is canny enough to draw the foul off Ben-hatira when under pressure from the forward.
    • 41' There's been a goal in the Spain-Finland match! Who got it?
    • 40' Rodwell steams forward with the ball. He has Rose to his left and Driver to his right but goes alone. He is slightly off balance as he checks on to his right foot, and fires a shot high and wide.
    • 39' Mancienne gets a big head on a kick out from Neuer beofre Ozil can get to it. The Chelsea man has looked assured on his return to the team.
    • 38' Rose filas to latch on to a ball down the wing and it goes for a goal kick.
    • 36' Danny Rose spreads the ball out to Driver, who sends the ball into the box and back to Rose... The midfielder gets a booking for trying to knock the ball into the net with his hand!
    • 35' England are being given more time on the ball now, and they are wasting little time in trying to mount the next attack.
    • 33' Ozil tries to poke a ball through to Dejagah, but the striker is offside.
    • 32' The pockets of England fans around the ground are making themselves heard now.
    • 30' Johnson tries to play in Danny rose on the overlap, but the Tottenham player is offside.
    • 29' GOAL!! England have another corner, and the cross curls nicely on to the head of Rodwell, who heads past Neuer and the men on either post! Perhaps Neuer could have come off his line to claim that, but credit to Rodwell, who looks dominant in the air.
    • 28' Fraizer Campbell skips the sliding challenge and wins a corner. Neuer plucks the cross out of the air and launches an accurate throw upfiled for Ozil to chase.
    • 26' Germany can break forward and Ebert shoots wide form distance.
    • 25' The free-kick is played back to Gardner whose low strike from distance doesn't make it through the corwd in the box.
    • 24' Campbell beats Howedes for pace down the right channel, forcing the Germany defender to foul him near the byline.
    • 22' Driver now concedes the free-kick for a foul on Dejagah. England are under pressure again, especially on the break.
    • 21' Danny Rose is penalised for a foul on Ozil, who looks a handful.
    • 20' Schmelzer slides in to concede another croner, but the Germans are again first to the set piece to head it clear.
    • 19' Gardner looks to spray the ball out to Driver, but he overhits the pass.
    • 17' Driver curls in an inviting cross for Gardner to head... The Villa player heads the ball downwards, but it bounces up into the hands of Neuer.
    • 16' Germany are doing a good job of keeping England out of their final third. They look a well-organised unit.
    • 15' Rose jumps for a header with Khedira and fouls the Germany skipper in the air.
    • 14' Campbell's pace is enough to give Beck a scare and concede a corner. Jack Rodwell leaps highest to meet it but heads over the bar.
    • 14' Stearman plays a ball across the pitch on the edge of the final third that Ozil intercepts, but Germany cannot work the chance. A poor idea from Stearman.
    • 13' Ben-Hatira tries to dig a cross out, but it sails over everyone and goes out for an england throw.
    • 12' England struggling to hold on to any meaningful possession in the Germany half thus far.
    • 9' Ozil fancies a strike from the edge of the area, but it's deflected away for a throw.
    • 8' Taylor floats in a cross to the far post, but it's caught confidently by Neuer.
    • 7' Don't forget, you can check up on Spain's progress in their match against Finland here: Finland v Spain
    • 6' After the nervy start at the back England had against Spain, Stuart Pearce will be annoyed to see his players give away a goal so early on in this match.
    • 4' GOAL!! Boateng picks up Gonzalo Castro with a through ball, and the forward gets in front of Mancienne to slot through Scott Loach's legs and open the scoring!
    • 3' England win a corner, but it's headed away.
    • 1' Germany kick off to get this match underway! Remember the Germans need a point to be sure of qualification, but should they lose and Spain win by two clear goals then they could be out.
    • - The anthems are being played as we speak. Only a handful of players are singing the words though. Honestly, the youth of today.
    • - Michael Mancienne returns to the side following his suspension for his red card in the opening game against Finland.
    • - So, with England already through, boss Stuart Pearce has rested several players who have featured so for, including Theo Walcott, Gabriel Agbonlahor, James Milner and Mark Noble.
    • - Germany U21: Neuer, Beck, Howedes, Boateng, Schmelzer, Castro, Khedira, Ebert, Ben-Hatira, Ozil, Dejagah. Subs: Fromlowitz, Aogo, Johnson, Hummels, Schwaab, Grote, Adlung, Ede, Marin, Wagner, Sippel
    • - England U21: Loach, Stearman, Tomkins, Mancienne, Taylor, Driver, Gardner, Rodwell, Johnson, Campbell, Rose. Subs: Hart, Cranie, Onuoha, Richards, Gibbs, Cattermole, Noble, Muamba, Walcott, Lewis
    • - England are already through to the semi-finals of the European Championships and they could make it three wins out of three and eliminate Germany in Halmstad tonight.
  • Summary

    • 29' GOAL!! England have another corner, and the cross curls nicely on to the head of Rodwell, who heads past Neuer and the men on either post! Perhaps Neuer could have come off his line to claim that, but credit to Rodwell, who looks dominant in the air.
    • 17' Driver curls in an inviting cross for Gardner to head... The Villa player heads the ball downwards, but it bounces up into the hands of Neuer.
    • 4' GOAL!! Boateng picks up Gonzalo Castro with a through ball, and the forward gets in front of Mancienne to slot through Scott Loach's legs and open the scoring!

  20. Come on guys, fair play to Ludwig, it's time we got over the WW2 thing. Few of us lived it, let alone know anything about it, but one thing's for sure, it was miserable for both sides, no matter who "won". It makes us look silly to bring it up in the context of football to be honest. I've worked in Germany and they were great to us, they made us really welcome and looked after us. Let's grow up and move on - hope it was an enjoyable game - all about the football.
