    Brazil outclass England

A lacklustre England went down 1-0 to Brazil, for whom Nilmar scored the only goal in a friendly in Qatar. More

  • Live Commentary

    Time:90'
    • Brazil
    • England
    • 90+4' Hulk fires a low long-shot wide, and that is the last action of the game - England lose, deservedly, and there were not too many positive performances for Fabio Capello to reflect on.
    • 90+3' Defoe looks for Crouxch in the box, but again Brazil's defence is solid.
    • 90+2' Peter Crouch wins a corner on the right, to be delivered by Young.. Hulk heads clear.
    • 90+1' Four minutes of added time to be played.
    • 90' The ball falls for Huddlestone at the edge of the box, and his effort is blocked.
    • 88' Melo pings a long shot over. England's challenge is expiring disappointingly here. They have been well beaten.
    • 86' Ashley Young comes on for Milner as the game threatens to peter out in tame fashion.
    • 84' Huddlestone is making his debut and is getting plenty of touches in this brief cameo.
    • 82' England changes - Tom Huddlestone and Peter Crouch on for Gareth Barry and Shaun Wright-Phillips.
    • 82' Julio Baptista and the debutant Carlos Eduardo replace Nilmar and Kaka.
    • 81' Brazil nearly carve England open with some one-touch passing, but Jenas scrambles away Kaka's final ball to Dani Alves.
    • 79' Rooney takes a long-shot from 25 yards but it does not present Julio Cesar with much of a problem.
    • 78' LUCIO HITS THE POST!!! The centre-back strides forward and crashes a left-foot shot against the woodwork! Great hit.
    • 77' Good block Wes Brown, who gets in the way of a goalbound header!
    • 75' England win a corner on the right, but the delivery is poor and Brazil come away on the counter-attack.
    • 73' It is slow and ponderous from England. They really do not look like getting back into this.
    • 71' The pace of the game has slowed right down. While it is a warm evening, that is a little disappointing from an English point of view.
    • 69' Wright-Phillips crosses from the right, over Upson to MILNER!!! He volleys over from a tight angle - but better from England!
    • 67' Porto striker Hulk makes his Brazil debut, replacing the stricken Luis Fabiano.
    • 66' Luis Fabiano stays down after a clash of heads, and the striker will have to come off.
    • 65' Daniel Alves replaces Elano, who gets a standing ovation from the Brazilian fans.
    • 63' Worst free-kick of all-time from Jermaine Jenas! England had the ball centrally, 30 yards out and he attempted to spread the ball wide left for Milner, but was totally wayward. What a waste.
    • 61' Quick feet and hard work by Milner to win a corner on the England left, which the Aston Villa man will take himself... Julio Cesar punches away.
    • 59' Luis Fabiano backheels into the path of ELANO!! He slices his left-foot shot wide of Foster's goal!
    • 58' Brazil are stroking the ball about imperiously, although you cannot help thinking England are making them look better than they are.
    • 57' Great crossfield ball from Rooney to Wright-Phillips, who gives the ball away with another poor chested 'pass'.
    • 56' Luis Fabiano steps up.... AND MISSES!!! He sends the ball high and wide, and that is a dismal effort!
    • 55' PENALTY!!! Terrible error by Brown, chesting the ball into the path of Nilmar, who is upended by Foster. Clear penalty, and a harsher ref might have sent the goalkeeper off.
    • 55' Defoe replaces Bent, who has not done much to enhance his chances of a World Cup call-up.
    • 54' ELANO!! He crosses from the right and Foster has to palm the ball away from his near post.
    • 52' We are about to see Jermain Defoe - he is getting ready to come on - presumably for Darren Bent.
    • 51' The ball comes back out to Wright-Phillips, who hits a powerful shot into a forest of bodies.
    • 50' Crossed deep from the right for Upson, who heads the back back across goal but it is cleared.
    • 48' That was a moment of real quality from Brazil, and now England must really come forward - Fabio Capello will want to know how Nilmar got two yards in front of Upson and Brown.
    • 47' GOAL!!!! Nilmar heads Brazil in front, meeting a superb Elano through-ball with a controlled header, and Foster has no chance!
    • 46' Brazil kick the second half off, playing from left to right as we see it in their famous yellow and blue. England are in all-white.
    • 45+3' Elano delivers the free-kick into the box but Brown hoofs clear and that is half-time.
    • 45+2' Brown trips the spinning Nilmar, and that would have been a booking in a competitive game.
    • 45+1' A cross from the left finds Darren Bent, but he is double marked and cannot direct his header goalwards.
    • 45' Two minutes of stoppage time to be played.
    • 44' Excuse me, I started to drift off there. England are letting Brazil pass the ball around but there is presently very little attacking threat.
    • 41' Rooney tries to find Wright-Phillips racing into the box, but once again the killer ball is cut out.
    • 39' Corner Brazil after a Gilberto Silva shot deflects wide.
    • 38' Elano swings in a corner from the Brazil right, and Rooney is back to head it off the line.
    • 36' Milner now! He fires well over from 15 yards on his weaker left foot.
    • 35' Rooney is clattered 25 yards out! No free-kick but the ball falls to BENT!! His shot is deflected behind for a corner!
    • 34' Bastos gets beyond Brown and crosses left-footed... claimed by the busy Foster.
    • 33' Nilmar is in acres of space inside the final third, then goes down under a powder-puff challenge and does not get a free-kick!
    • 31' Kaka!! Curls a shot from 20-plus yards, but again Foster shows safe hands.
    • 30' Felipe Melo sidefoots goalwards from the edge of the box... but it is straight at Foster.
    • 28' Luis Fabiano controls in the box but plays a reverse pass to Elano that has no chance at all of finding its target.
    • 27' England look pretty careless in midfield. They are lacking the passing quality of Frank Lampard or Michael Carrick.
    • 25' PLAYER RATINGS: You may have noticed you have the chance to rate the players from both sides lower down on this page. So, go on then, do it!
    • 24' Milner crosses from the left and finds Bent, but the striker just cannot get over the top of the ball!
    • 23' Great control by Rooney, then a simple ball to Jenas at the edge of the box. Better from England.
    • 22' Bastos streaks clear down the left, and fires a diagonal shot... just wide!
    • 20' Hardly a vote of confidence when there is a Mexican wave inside the first 20 minutes.
    • 19' Wes Brown is overlapping down the right but Wright-Phillips plays a woeful through-ball. England looking rusty.
    • 17' Terrible play by England! Upson plays Foster into trouble with a poor backpass, and the goalkeeper scuffs a useless clearance straight at Kaka who - amazingly - miscontrols.
    • 16' Fabio Capello is getting some Camacho-style sweat patches under his arms. Let's see how they are by full-time...
    • 15' England are a little stretched and are having to put in some last-ditch challenges - Milner and Bridge with one each.
    • 13' You suspect Rooney is relishing playing against Brazil so much he is trying to be a bit too clever. Another attempted killer ball is cut out.
    • 12' Well played again by Lescott, who uses his strength to ease Luis Fabiano off the ball.
    • 11' Error from Upson, who loses the ball to Nilmar. The striker plays a low cross from the left but Joleon Lescott cuts it out!
    • 10' Rooney skips past a challenge and races towards the box, but is just dispossessed.
    • 9' Brazil are enjoying a long spell of possession, as they so often do.. but Elano gives it away.
    • 7' Poor clearance from Julio Cesar, but Wes Brown is penalised for putting an arm in Luis Fabiano's back.
    • 6' Melo tries a long shot after being given space to run through the centre... he fires well wide.
    • 4' A Brazil corner comes in from the right onto the head of Thiago Silva, but his header is weak and Foster saves.
    • 3' Lyon's Michel Bastos is playing at left-back, despite being a right-sided attacking midfielder. It was either him or Elano, apparently.
    • 2' Wright-Phillips races down the right flank and crosses low, just inches in front of the stretching Wayne Rooney! So close...
    • 1' Game on! Wayne Rooney immediately looks for Darren Bent, who is offside.
    • - So John Terry's ankle injury keeps him out and Michael Carrick also misses out with an ankle tweak, handing Jermaine Jenas a start.
    • - A minute's silence for tragic Germany goalkeeper Robert Enke before kick-off.
    • - Plenty of England fans seem to have made it into the Khalifa Stadium - to the extent that some people are jeering the Brazilian anthem. Idiots. Dunga is clearly wearing a vest under his pale yellow shirt.
    • - The teams gather in the tunnel. While these are by no means full-strength teams, there are some important issues at stake - a chance for the likes of James Milner and Shaun Wright-Phillips to stake their claim.
    • - BRAZIL TEAM: Julio Cesar, Lucio, Maicon, Thiago Silva, Bastos, Felipe Melo, Gilberto Silva, Kaka, Elano, Luis Fabiano, Nilmar.
    • - There is quite a light show going on inside this lively stadium - we're still waiting for confirmation of the Brazil team.
    • - ENGLAND TEAM: Ben Foster, Wes Brown, Matthew Upson, Joleon Lescott, Wayne Bridge, Shaun Wright-Phillips, Gareth Barry, Jermaine Jenas, James Milner, Wayne Rooney (c), Emile Heskey.
    • - We are in Qatar for a friendly between Brazil and England! Both sides are some way bel;ow full strength, but it should be a great game nonetheless.
  • Summary

  6. Why are people talking up Brazil? They only just scraped a 1-0 win against our B team with their first team selection. I dont think Brazil will be contenders for the World Cup, it will stay with a European team. Spain, Germany, Holland and yes even England with a full squad have a good chance if they can get their act together.
