    • 90+2' The final whistle goes! England win 2-1. Now Capello must decide which 23 men he is taking to South Africa. He has to submit his squad on Tuesday. Seven men will be disappointed.
    • 90+1' Tamada shot straight at Hart. Easy for the England keeper.
    • 90' Japan hit the bar in the dying seconds. Abe's glancing header eluded everybody, but bounces off the woodwork before running to safety.
    • 89' Another good stop by Hart to tip over Hasebe's piledriver. Japan have a corner.
    • 88' Thunder and lightening in Graz as Heskey misses a golden chance. Gerrard crosses, but Heskey heads wide of goal. Terrible miss.
    • 87' Honda has the chance from a 25-yard free-kick, but he is leaning back and the balls drifts well over the target.
    • 86' Offside flag against Morimoto. That rain is fairly chucking it down in Austria.
    • 85' Tamada replaces Endo for Japan.
    • 84' Well, looks like England are going to claim the victory. Those changes have certainly paid off.
    • 83' The rain is falling and that wet surface has not helped the cause of the Japan defence. Two OGs in the second period.
    • 82' GOAL for England! Ashley Cole's cross is deflected into his own net by Nakazawa. England lead 2-1.
    • 80' Into the final 10 minutes now.
    • 79' Lovely bit of play between Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney. Rooney finds Gerrard, but the Liverpool midfielder is crowded out.
    • 78' God save the Queen is being sung by the England fans. They sound a lot happier to be level, even if there is major room for improvement.
    • 77' England still dominating those possession stats. 64% to 36% in favour of Capello's men.
    • 76' Gerrard is winning his 80th cap. He is the 12th player to reach this milestone for England. Can he deliver a winner for his country in Graz.
    • 75' Here comes the change for England. Heskey was out of the Aston Villa side towards the end of the season. He replaces Lennon.
    • 74' Emile Heskey getting ready for action on the touchline.
    • 73' Kawashima alert to punch away from Rooney. Ashley Cole can only flight the ball wide of target.
    • 72' England looking a lot sharper in this second period. The changes have worked well for Capello.
    • 71' GOAL! Joe Cole cross headed into hit own net by Tulio Tanaka. That goal had been coming for a while. England level up.
    • 70' Matsui replaces Okubo for Japan.
    • 69' The England shot count moves up to 19. Capello can't complain about the lack of willingness to have a shot. He can complain about a lack of incisiveness.
    • 68' Kawashima has caught the eye in the Japan goal. He makes a terrific stop to tip Rooney's shot over the bar. How did he keep that out? Wonderful stop.
    • 66' That was almost the clinching goal for Japan. Capello is due to name is final 23 men on Tuesday. Nobody has really caught the eye.
    • 65' Japan sub Morimoto almost nets. Great turn in the box, but Hart pulls off an agile diving stop.
    • 64' Change for Japan. Okazaki departs. Morimoto is on.
    • 63' Rooney very much to the fore. Swerving shot, but Kawashima holds.
    • 62' Great bit of play by Lennon, but the Japanese defence head clear his cross.
    • 60' An hour gone here. England looking a lot fresher having altered half their side, but no goal.
    • 59' Great through ball by Gerrard, but Rooney is just offside. That was a close call.
    • 58' Despite all their huffing and puffing, England have managed 17 shots on goal. Only five have hit the target.
    • 57' Certainly a lively start to this second half, but England continue to trail despite their best intentions.
    • 56' Rooney lucky to avoid a straight red card. Shocking late tackle on the goalscorer Tulio Tanaka. That would have been a red in the World Cup finals.
    • 55' Lampard misses! Low to Kawashima's right, but the keeper makes a fine diving stop. Rebound is knocked to safety.
    • 54' Penalty to England. Lampard free-kick handled by Honda.
    • 53' Lampard wins a free-kick. Chance for England.
    • 52' England win a corner, but Gerrard's delivery narrowly fails to find Joe Cole.
    • 51' Gerrard back at the heart of that England midfield with Lampard.
    • 50' How the Japanese would love a win today. Great stop from Joe Hart as Honda's drive from distance is tipped over.
    • 49' Engkland and Japan last met six years ago – drawing 1-1 in a friendly at the City of Manchester Stadium in a warm up match for Euro 2004, June 1, 2004. Michael Owen put England ahead before Shinji Ono equalised.
    • 48' England up the tempo, which was sorely missing in that first period.
    • 47' England changes at the break: Hart on for James, Wright-Phillips on for Glenn Johnson, Joe Cole on for Darren Bent, Carragher on for Walcott and Gerrard on for Tom Huddlestone.
    • 46' Game kicks off. Gerrard into action right away. A thumping effort from the Liverpool midfielder, but Kawashima does well to make a smart block.
    • 46' Few changes at the start of the second period. England introduce Joe Hart, Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carrager and Shaun Wright-Phillips.
    • 45' No stoppage time added. The ref Rene Eisner signals the end of a really disappointing half for England. They must do better in the second period.
    • 44' Japan are going to hold the lead at half-time.
    • 43' Walcott injects some pace on the England right, but his cross is too near the keeper. Easily held by Kawashima.
    • 42' Apart from Gareth Barry and Ledley King, all the England bench are stripped and ready for action. To be honest, Capello could justify making 11 changes at the break.
    • 41' Cole flies down the left flank, but his shot is easily clasped by Kawashima.
    • 40' Lampard narrowly fails to connect at the back post as England push for an equaliser before the interval.
    • 39' Japan work hard, but they have not exactly had a prodigious recent record in friendles. They have drawn 0-0 with Venezuala and suffered a 3-0 loss to Serbia and a 2-0 defeat to South Korea. Perhaps this will bring them some success today.
    • 38' Rooney nearly brings England level. Huddlestone smashes in an effort. Rooney directs it towards goal, but the ball flies narrowly wide.
    • 36' Heading for the final 10 minutes of the half here.
    • 34' What is certain is that Lennon and Walcott are not seeing enough of the ball here. Not expansive enough to trouble the Japanese, and they are not pressuring the ball enough.
    • 33' Question marks all over this England effort? 4-4-2 is the bread and butter of the British game, but it looks far too predictable against what it must be said is a fluid Japanese side.
    • 32' Will Capello make any changes at the break? Must be a fair chance on this showing. Gerrard looking a bit glum on that England bench.
    • 31' A big speculative long ball from Ferdinand almost pays off. Japan defence in a bit of a mess, but Bent can only nod wide under pressure from Kawashima.
    • 30' That defensive pairing of Ferdinand and Terry do not look too clever today. If a guy like Okazaki can cause them problems...well, there will be major problems at the World Cup.
    • 28' A Johnson effort flies well over the bar. That was never going to test the Japan goal. England have had eight shots on goal, but only two on target. That says it all really.
    • 27' Another chance for Lampard to work the goalkeeper from a free-kick from distance, but the wall charge down his effort.
    • 26' England still dominating the possession without anything really clear-cut. They have had 63% of possession to Japan's 37%.
    • 24' First chance for Bent from a Lampard corner, but his headed attempt is miserable. In a Sunderland jersey, that may have flew in, but not today. Kind of sums up the first 25 minutes for England.
    • 23' A long-range free-kick. Lampard smashes in the free-kick. Kawashima just does enough to halt the ball from flying in off the turf. Awkward moment for him, but Japan clear the ball.
    • 22' Lionel Messi said England were among his favourites to win the World Cup. The Barcelona forward's predictions are hardly ringing true here. This has been very messy.
    • 21' Capello spotted grumbling on the touchline. England giving up possession far too easily.
    • 20' England respond at the other end. Lennon accepts a short corner, but he whips the ball wide and deep. It flies out of play. Not sure if that was a corner or a shot.
    • 19' More uncertainty at the heart of the England defence. Ferdinand all over the place. Okazaki shoves him off the ball for a second time, but he blazes over when he should have been testing James in the England goal.
    • 18' Great bit of play by Rooney. He drives on and slides in Lennon, but it is a poor finish. Easy save by Kawashima in the Japanese goal.
    • 16' So far the Capello experiment is not working. Game lapsed into a bit of a pattern.
    • 14' Japan happy to sit deeper and hit on the counter attack. They win another corner kick, but this time England whack the clear from Endo's delivery.
    • 13' Lampard and Huddlestone yet to grab control of the midfield.
    • 11' England dominating possession. They have had 71% to Japan's 29%, but they have not penetrated the Japanese rearguard.
    • 10' Rooney seems to be dropping deep for the ball. No doubt England are looking a bit unsure after that opening.
    • 9' Capello looking a bit pensive. Not what he was looking for.
    • 8' England looking a bit slipshod. Okazaki showed some good strength, but his shot went spinning wide from the edge of the box.
    • 7' Tulio is a central defender. Not bad when your centre-back can do that. Finished like a true striker.
    • 6' GOAL! Endo swings over a corner kick low and Tulio Tanaka buries a stunning shot low into the corner of the net from just inside the box. No chance for James.
    • 4' England preferring a studied approach in these early moments. The Great Escape is blaring out. England have a big following with them in Austria.
    • 3' Walcott wins an early free-kick, but the move comes to nothing.
    • 2' Capello has given the sprinters the nod to try to supply Bent. Walcott on the right flank, Lennon on the opposite side.
    • 1' We are udnerway in Graz! England in their red shirts, Japan wearing blue. Surface looks in decent condition.
    • 13.10 The players are coming out. The Kings of Leon "Sex on Fire" is blaring out. Huddlestone and Bent have to hope they are on fire this afternoon. There is no room for passengers, so to speak, on the plane to South Africa.

    • Capello has made men like Huddlestone and Bent aware of what they are playing for before the match in Graz. "I more or less know. Not 23, but maybe 20," said the England manager. "It will be disappointing when I have to tell some of the players that they must go home. I am really happy with their focus and the job they have done. But I have to choose. All the players here have trained really well." The stakes are high. Game coming up in around 15 minutes.
    • Huddlestone and Bent perhaps have a last chance to change Capello's mind. The same cannot be said for Michael Dawson and Scott Parker, who have not played a game under the Italian. Stephen Warnock and Shaun Wright-Phillips also look likely to be culled when Capello submits his squad.
    • The game kicks off at 13.15 BST. England are up against a Japanese side who are busy tweaking their own preparations for South Africa. Should be a useful afternoon for both teams. Who will make it into Capello's final squad? Give us your thoughts.
    • England manager Fabio Capello has named a strong side for the match including surprise opportunities for Tom Huddlestone and Darren Bent to force their way into contention for the finals squad. England: David James, Glen Johnson, John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Ashley Cole, Theo Walcott, Tom Huddlestone, Frank Lampard, Aaron Lennon, Wayne Rooney, Darren Bent

  1. England are garbage. I feel sorry for Capello

  2. I would pick
    goalkeepers:green hart james
Defenders: ferdinand terry dawson bains warnock g johnson upson
midfielders:gerrard parker milner lampard lennon barry walcott carrick
Strickers rooney bent crouch defoe a johnson

Ialso think its a shame that every one who was pick for the squad has been played at least once apart from parker and dawson even if they got subbed on for the last 5 - 10 mins like adam johnson did against mexico then i would have been happy

  5. some said this player should or shouldnt be on the plane to SA, but for me the whole team should stay back in england to save the embarasssment and to stop the hooligans from going to SA. history shows wahat these hooligans are capable of..... capello and team or the three @#$% dream onnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn.

  6. Why do you English do it! every 4 years you get a group of players together, normally record a song, everyone starts writing loads and loads of tripe about how this time it will be Englands World Cup! To make matters worse the press try to make each world cup an anniversary since England won it last, Oh its 50 years since 66' its our time again etc etc Does anyone remember 1966! if you do tell me In what country was the world cup played! How many teams took part in that world cup! and finally, How many games did England play including the final! if you can work that out maybe you will see why England won. I think that maybe there are only 2 teams who stand a chance of winning it this time, Argentina and Spain - Why! Well Argentina have some of the best players in Europe at the present and Spain have been winning everything with a strong highly talented squad. so why wont a european side win! easy, european teams have too many foreign players, european clubs change their playing style to suit the new south american players and the european game which was once strong now no longer exists. Englans game centered around a strong centre forward and wingers, the Germans had roughly the same game but added ace defenders who could read the game even blind-fold, the French & the Dutch have good players but not the strength in depth. Greece won Euro 2004 with all home based players, we won with grit and determination and playing for our country, soon after we saw an influx of foreigners into the greek game and our world ranking dropped like a stone and our game became a game of who could cheat the most If England are to ever win a national title they need to get rid of the majority of those foreign players, give english kids the chance to develop through the club system but as with all clubs throughout europe that will never happen as all they are interested in is MONEY, so sorry England you wont win unless your players play for Englad not the wage packet..

  15. After watching England, today I think Capello should look for at least another 18.
Terry, A. Cole and Lampard should stay at home; they are more concerned with their own tackle instead of tackling the World Cup.
Ferdinand, King and Barry are unfit.
Warnock, Dawson and Baines lack experience.
Then we have Calamity James, Heskey the Donkey and Philips the headless Chicken.
Gerrard, Upson and Lennon are not in form as for Bent and Huddleston are just not England class just very good Club players.
Not many of the team have performed well with the exception of Joe Hart, J. Cole, Glen Johnson and Rooney.
Unfortunately, with Rooney he has an attitude problem and is easily frustrated which will likely see him sent off.
We lack a leader so if Gerrard goes then he should lead or even Rooney as it might calm him failing that give it back to Terry.
    My squad would be:

    Goalkeepers: Hart, Green, James

Defenders: Carrick, G Johnson, Terry, J Cole, Carragher, Upson, S Parker, Baines

Midfield: Gerrard, Milner, Walcott, Lennon, Barry, Wright-Philips, Huddleston

Forwards: Rooney, Crouch, Defoe, Heskey, A Johnson

I am an Englishman and support England but I just do not think we have the Conviction to lift the trophy. However, they said that in 66.
