    • - That's it. Thanks for following tonight's action with me. Remember you can follow me on Twitter here
    • - Pique scores! Low to the right, sending De Gea the wrong way and Barca win 2-0 on penalties!
    • - Pique to win it for Barca...
    • - Young misses! Barca just need to score this and they've won.
    • - Ashley Young for United...
    • - Xavi scores! He guides the ball to De Gea's left. 1-0 Barca.
    • - Xavi for Barca...
    • - Nani misses! The ball strikes the underside of the bar and bounces out!
    • - Nani steps up first...
    • 90' FULL TIME. 0-0 in Gothenburg, so we'll have three penalties each to decide this.
    • 88' But Barca are still knocking on the door as Valencia gives the ball away in his own box. Afellay fires a cross in from the left, but it misses Pedro and Evra glances it away.
    • 87' This has penalties written all over it now; It will be three penalties apiece.
    • 86' Valencia scoops the ball over Rafinha's head in extravagant fashion before being fouled. Neither side giving the other an inch here, despite it being a friendly.
    • 85' Jordi Alba picks out Fabregas with a deft ball over Carrick's head, but Fabregas can't bring it under control.
    • 84' United sub: Wooton ON, Ferdinand OFF
    • 82' Nani nearly kills United's chances with a blind backpass that Pedro seizes upon. But Carrick is the last man back, and he manages to poke the ball away from Pedro's toes.
    • 80' This time last year United's new signing Nick Powell was training at an army barracks with Crewe. He's now going toe-to-toe with Xavi. How things can change in football...
    • 78' United sub: Powell ON, Anderson OFF
    • 76' Barca sub: I Sanchez ON, Busquets OFF (cue a chorus of boos for tonight's pantomime villain)
    • 75' Afellay cuts inside from the left and drills a low shot about a foot wide.
    • 74' Barca still making life very difficult for United, even without many of their big guns since the mass changes. If anyone is going to score, you have to back Barca.
    • 72' Alba shows great pace to get into a crossing position on the left, but that man Paul Scholes gets back to cut the cross out at United's near post.
    • 70' As does Nani, who kicked out at Busquets. Someone needs to remind these guys that this is a friendly.
    • 69' Infact, Busquets goes into the book for that.
    • 68' United burst forward with Kagawa, but Busquets pulls Nani back... very cynical by Busquets.
    • 67' United sub: Berbatov ON, Welbeck OFF.
    • 66' Barca subs: Jordi Alba, Rafinha, Montoya ON, Mascherano, Sanchez, Alves OFF.
    • 65' Barca beginning to wind this up a bit.
    • 63' An even better save by De Gea! Pedro meets a cross from the right with his head, and De Gea leaps to his left and palms it around the post. Super stop.
    • 62' De Gea saves United with a good save with his feet from Sanchez, who was put in by Alves.
    • 60' Barca pinning United inside their own half as Xavi picks out Alves with a perfectly-weighted through ball - but Alves is flagged offside. That was tight.
    • 58' Anyone else sensing penalties? A three-penalty shootout will take place if we are level at full time.
    • 56' Another wild shot by Adriano, who seems determined to score from 35+ yards tonight.
    • 54' Xavi picks out Fabregas with a delectable long ball, but the former Arsenal captain is muscled out of it by Valencia.
    • 53' Messi and Iniesta, both substituted at the break, have emerged from the tunnel - and that's triggered the biggest cheer of the night.
    • 52' Busquets is making no friends here. His rash tackle on Young earns him a talking to, but no booking.
    • 51' Pedro steps away from Carrick with a beautiful stepover, but his cross is hopelessly overhit and United can breathe again.
    • 50' With the exception of Rooney's penalty miss, that's as close as United have come to scoring.
    • 49' Almost an instant impact by Kagawa! Valencia's low cross is touched back by Welbeck to Kagawa, who coaxes the ball towards the bottom corner with his left foot, but Pinto makes a very good one-handed save low to his right.
    • 48' Kagawa and Carrick are on for United, while Pedro, Pinto, Xavi and Pique have come on for Barcelona.
    • 47' There have been a host of half-time changes, I'll bring you all the changes in a moment...
    • 46' SECOND HALF. United get the second half underway.
    • HT Can United recover from that penalty miss in the second half? Or will Iniesta, Messi & co move up the gears? Let me know on Twitter
    • 45+1 Half-time and it's goalless, but United spurned a great chance to take the lead against Barcelona.
    • 45' It was a poor penalty, but a decent stop from a comfortable height to his right. The follow-up miss was even worse. Poor from Rooney.
    • 44' Rooney steps up to take the penalty... SAVED BY VALDES! And he must score on the rebound but he hammers it high and wide! Oh dear.
    • 43' PENALTY UNITED! Nani goes down in the box and United have a penalty!
    • 42' Adriano fancies a shot from 35 yards. And it goes about 35 yards over the bar.
    • 41' That's the first time United have caused real indecision in the Barca defence.
    • 40' Young whips the resulting corner in from the left and Valdes misses it completely. The ball drops to Vidic, but Mascherano makes a block and Barca desperately hack it clear.
    • 39' Scholes finds Young with another phenomenal pass. Young spots Evra on the overlap, but Busquets concedes the corner.
    • 38' Alves finds Messi, who slides the ball back into Alves's path - but the ball skids off the greasy surface and is out for a United goal kick. Finally some respite for Fergie's side.
    • 36' Busquets is being mercilessly jeered by the United support.
    • 35' Tello looking a real threat as he crosses low from the left for Messi, who meets the ball with a sliding effort - but it is stopped by De Gea, who didn't know too much about it.
    • 33' The ball almost went into Ferdinand's own net, and the defender goes crazy at his teammates.
    • 32' Superb mazy run by Messi, who exchanges passes with Sanchez before Messi rolls the ball out to the unmarked Tello on the left. Tello goes for a first-time shot - but Ferdinand gets back to deflect the ball over his own bar.
    • 30' I knew I was setting myself up for a fall by praising Paul Scholes's tackling. He's caught Sergio Busquets late and sees yellow. Busquets is still rolling.
    • 28' Just a reminder that if the score is level at full-time, we will have a penalty shootout - but there will be just 3 penalties each, rather than 5. Could be interesting.
    • 26' Anderson looks to release Young with a long ball - but Alves steps in. It's all very frantic by United, Barca still look rather comfortable.
    • 24' Scholes finds Valencia wide on the right, but the former Wigan midfielder's cross is intercepted. Rooney throws his arms in the air in frustration.
    • 23' Barca seem to have United where they want them at the moment. United being pressured into plenty of mistakes.
    • 22' So close for Barca! Messi finds space down the left and goes for the far bottom corner, but De Gea pulls off a vital fingertip save to deny him. Fantastic save.
    • 20' Not sure what's going on here, but Scholes has put in three really great tackles so far. At the age of 37, has Paul Scholes finally learnt how to tackle?
    • 19' Scholes picks out Nani with a delicious sweeping ball out to the right. Nani takes it on his chest, cuts inside and fires a good low shot just wide.
    • 17' Barca definitely on top here but United holding their own so far.
    • 16' Anderson has three bites at Messi, before eventually tugging his shirt and Barca have a free-kick 25 yards from goal... But Messi can only find the top of the wall with the set-piece.
    • 15' Rooney is picked out by Scholes's beautiful long ball, but Puyol and Mascherano get back to deal with him. Rooney claims handball - and replays suggest the ball did strike Mascherano on the arm.
    • 13' This time Rooney spurns a chance, putting a free header wide after he was picked out well by Valencia's ball from the right.
    • 12' Big miss for Barca. Welbeck is dispossessed in his own half and Messi bursts forward. His ball to the left finds Tello, but the forward takes too long and eventually shoots into the side-netting.
    • 10' The crowd very much on Barca's side here. So much so that boos ring out every time United get the ball!
    • 8' Alves advances down the right for Barca, but his cross-cum-shot sails over De Gea's head and out for a goal kick.
    • 7' Chance for United as Rooney finds Young on the left. He cuts onto his right foot in familiar fashion, but his cross towards Welbeck is too high.
    • 6' Very nearly a goal for Barca. Iniesta splits the United defence with a delectable little through ball towards Messi. De Gea comes out but doesn't make contact, but does just enough to put Messi off, and the ball bounces out. Let-off for United.
    • 5' There are 47,000 fans here tonight, and tickets sold out for the game in just 45 minutes.
    • 4' United seeing more of the ball now as they settle into their rhythm.
    • 3' That's De Gea's first touch in pre-season friendlies, having spent the summer representing Spain in the European Championships and London Olympics.
    • 2' First chance falls to Barca. Messi cushions the ball to Iniesta, whose side-footed shot from 20 yards is taken comfortably by De Gea.
    • 1' KICK OFF. Barca get us underway on a bright sunny evening in Sweden.
    • 19.03 Running a little behind in Gothenburg. Should get underway in a couple of minutes.
    • 19.00 Alex Ferguson is having a good old chin wag with Henrik Larsson in the tunnel. I wonder if Fergie is trying to convince him to have another loan spell at Old Trafford...
    • 18.55 Rather dramatically, the match ball and SuperMatch trophy has arrived on the pitch via helicopter. Former United and Barca star Henrik Larsson is also on the field posing for photos.
    • 18.50 This is of course a repeat of the 2011 Champions League final, but the sides have already met since that memorable game at Wembley. United beat Barca 2-1 almost exactly a year ago at FedEx Field in Washington DC. Michael Owen scored the winner that day.
    • 18.40 New Barcelona head coach Tito Vilanova is getting ever closer to his first competitive game as coach. Read Andy Mitten's assessment of the task facing him.

  7. How did barca struggle to beat a team they beated twice in the UCL final. thats how i know barca relied on Pep Guardiola and his tactics too much.

  8. ???? Ive been reading some comments on this page and found that some Liverpool supporters are saying they'll end up above United? United just drew with Barca and are you guys are saying Liverpool can do better by saying Liverpool will be above United this season? I mean it's jealously but seriously? With all due respect if barca fans heard this they'll be saying Liverpool is a team below the la liga division to them. You gotta try better than that to get back at your rivals. As an arsenal supporter I'm just confused with what I'm reading here. Be better than Arsenal first before you can put any credibility on that statement you have just made. You guys finished 8th last season for goodness sake. If anyone needs to worry about a team, it's clearly Liverpool when they're the only one in decline.

  10. Liverpool fans need to realise they're not a big club anymore and will be scrapping it out with Stoke and Sunderland for a top ten finish and if you loserpool fans think otherwise, then give me a few reasons to suggest you can even get top 4 let alone challenge for the title and to be honest Europa league is a bonus for use lot seeing as you was even failig to qualify for that in the past.

  12. Wow I didn't expect this match to end in a draw in open play. I guess United look on par with Barcelona at the very moment, especially when they have all their players back. And this coming from an Arsenal supporter. This is gonna be another interesting season.

You won nothing last season, NOTHING, Mourinho had ferguson in his pocket, Mancini had him last season, Nothing worse than seeing some old dinosaur clinging on, because life without football is too unbarable to face.......... 18. I have genuine concerns for United this season unless they find someone - anyone! - to share the goalscoring with Rooney. His goals have carried this team since Ronaldo left. If he were to get injured heaven knows what would happen. Not going to be Wellbeck, that's for sure. Not going to be Nani on what I've seen of him of late; his penalty tonight was lamentable. Likewise Young; poor penalty - clearly didn't learn from playing for England. That leaves? Hernandez - think not; we saw the best of him in seaon one. Berbatov? - seen nothing pre-season to make anyone want to pay big money for him with his languid non-action style, almost like he's sulking. Very little goal threat from midfield so who's gonna score Sir Alex? And please don't tell us you are interested in any more players you - sorry, the Glazers - aren't prepared to buy. I'm interested in moving to a £5M-pound house and buying an Aston Martin but in truth I can afford neither!

From Les R, on Wed 8 Aug 21:27
  19. SUPERMAN Ferguson , you are losing it man and do you deny it , gone are the days of Ronaldo , and gone are the days of Scholes, gone are the days of Beckham ,
