    Scunthorpe through after shoot-out

Scunthorpe edged through to the Coca-Cola League One play-off final after a nerve-shredding 7-6 penalty shoot-out victory over MK Dons. More

  • Live Commentary

    Time:120'
    • MK Dons
    • Scunthorpe United
    • 120 IT IS ALL OVER! Tore Andre Flo crashes his penalty against the crossbar.
    • 120 Top penalty from Gueret, he puts his foot through it and it is past Murphy before he can react. Scunthorpe convert their next one. Are we going to get a winner?
    • 120 Togwell puts it right into the corner. And it is to be MK Dons goalkeeper Gueret is to take it.
    • 120 Forte converts...just. So does Lewington
    • 120 AND STIRLING'S PENALTY IS SAVED. Scunthorpe are still alive.
    • 120 Sparrow misses for Scunthorpe. Stirling can win it for MK.
    • 120 Trotter scores for Scunthorpe and Llera does the same for MK. Sudden death time.
    • 120 Puncheon's effort is saved by Joe Murphy.
    • 120 Captain Cliff Byrne puts high over the bar. Advantage MK Dons
    • 120 Alan Navarro scores, perfect pens so far.
    • 120 Andy Crosby, Scunthorpe's assistant manager scores.
    • 120 Paul Hayes and Aaron Wilbraham both score. Two all.
    • 120 Leven scores. One all
    • 120 And he sends the keeper the wrong way and slots it to the left.
    • 120 Grant McCann to take first.
    • 120 So how are your nerves? We are having a penalty shoout out for a place at Wembley. 46 league matches and two playoff matches has come down to this.
    • 120 Morris shoots wildly from 35 yards for Scunthorpe and it flys over the bar and with that we are going to spot kicks.
    • 120 McCann flicks the ball toward goal from the goal line, the ball is going to drop of Gueret in the MK goal but he dives back and flicks it over the bar. Very close
    • 115 That could have been the winner. A nasty high ball was swung in from the Scunthorpe right, two defenders fall to the floor and the ball drops to Mirfin. He pokes out his leg and the ball rolls past the keeper but strikes the post. That would have won it.
    • 111 That was close from Forte. He cuts in from the left and trys to steer the ball into the far corner with the outside of his left boot, it bends just wide.
    • 109 Former Chelsea man, Tore Andre Flo has replaced Sam Baldock for MK Dons.
    • 107 Llera should have gone then. On a booking, he throws his arm across Togwell's throat which surely merited a second yellow?
    • 106 Substitution for Scunthorpe. Togwell replaces Thompson, a move for a penalty shoot out perhaps?
    • 105 Absoloutely nothing, the ball goes flying over the bar.
    • 105 Forte is fouled. Ball is dead centre, 30 yards out, what can McCann do from here?
    • 104 If we are to go to penalties, MK Dons have a very good record, their last three shoot outs have all been successful, and they have not missed a kick either.
    • 100 Scunthorpe substitution, Johnathan Forte replaces Martin Woolford. The MK Dons defenders will not be happy with that move, Forte was a 100 metre sprinter in a former life.
    • 98 MK Dons swing in a corner from their right. Keeper Joe Murphy punches clear and lands awkwardly. The ball immediately goes out for some treatment to the keeper. He didn't finish the first leg through injury, but he will be fine here.
    • 97 46 league matches has come down to half an hour of football. Who will be the heroes and who will be the villains?
    • 94 A very scrappy start to extra time, the ball has hardly been in play.
    • 91 Wilbraham fllicks the ball on which Baldock runs onto, he hits a volley first time, it is charged down though and goes out for a throw in.
    • 90 Both teams have had chances to win the match, Hayes caused problems for the MK defence and could have scored. But Wilbraham should have scored for the Dons.
    • 90 We are going to extra time here..
    • 90 With 95 minutes on the clock, Stirling flots the ball in, Luke Chadwick throws himself at the ball and heads the ball just wide, that would have won it.
    • 90 MK have a throw in on the right, they load the box and Sterling launches the ball in, no danger though and it is easily cleared. A wasted opportunity.
    • 90 Puncheon finds Chadwick in space on the left, it looked like he was going to have a go himself, he trys to square it to Puncheon though and the ball is intercepted.
    • 90 There is going to be five minutes of stoppage time, which was about how long it took for the replacement referee to go through his stretches.
    • 88 Baldock turns his defender well on the left for MK. He draws in a second defender before shifting it to Chadwick. It sets up well to hit from 20 yards, the shot is poor though and rolls easily into Murphy's hands.
    • 87 Grant McCann puts in a whipped free-kick from the right, no one gets a touch and goes straight out for a goal kick. All it needed was touch...
    • 85 Woolford fires in a decent ball from the left for Scunthorpe, if only someone attacked the front post.
    • 81 Puncheon and Regan again combine down the right. Regan should have crossed first time when he had the chance, he took a touch though and the ball goes behind for a corner.
    • 80 Ten minutes to go, who is going to be a hero tonight?
    • 78 That is the best move of the match and the best chance of the match. Regan works the ball well with Puncheon and he gets to the goal line and fires the ball across goal. It beats the keeper and surely Wilbraham has to score. Under pressure, the ball flies wide. He should have scored, he was in the centre of the goal.
    • 77 Hayes brings the ball down well with his back to goal just inside the box, he controls the ball on his thigh and then spins quickly, shooting on the volley, saved by Gueret. Hayes has looked very lively in the second half.
    • 74 Murphy fires the ball in the crowd and receives a yellow card. A moment of frustration for the indirect free-kick, which is very much open to interpretation.
    • 73 From the free-kick the ball is set for Puncheon with the ball hitting the post, a deflection on it though and it goes behind for a corner.
    • 72 Backpass from Baldock to keeper Murphy. Indirect free-kick inside the box about eight yards out, just to the right of the post.
    • 70 MK Dons substitution. Mark Wright is replaced by Luke Chadwick.
    • 67 Cliff Byrne was a little lucky there. He threw Wilbraham to the floor which was immediately penalised, he then had a little stamp down on his calf, he tried to make it look accidental, it was definitely deliberate though.
    • 65 And it is Hayes again. A big punt up the field from Murphy and the ball drops in behind of the MK defensive line, Hayes runs onto it and trys to head the ball over Gueret, he recovers well though and fields the ball inside the six yard box.
    • 63 Big let off for Milton Keynes. Hayes gambles on Llera making a mistake and he does, selling Gueret short on a headed back pass, Hayes gets his toe to it and it rolls a yard wide. Hayes pounds the ground in frustration, he knows that was a gift of a chance.
    • 60 Injury and time for a change. Referee Neil Swarbrick has pulled up with a calf injury and has been replaced by the fourth official, Grant Hegley. Hegley goes through a vigorous stretching routine before finally taking the field.
    • 57 All Milton Keynes in this second half.
    • 55 Good attempt from Wilbraham, from the top left corner of the box he runs onto a Navarro knock down and shoots across the keeper and just wide. Murphy looked nervous about that effort.
    • 54 Corner from MK's left, the keeper flaps at it and the ball drops in the area, there is a foul commited though and MK can't capitalise on Murphy's mistake.
    • 52 A poor back pass to Gueret forces the keeper to rush out and fire the ball clear. It is charged down by Woolford and the ball fizzes back off of the Scunthorpe forward and wide. That could have gone anywhere.
    • 49 Puncheon has started brilliantly for MK, he gets the ball on the half way line and runs at pace at the defence who keep backing away. He cuts in on his left foot and fizzes a shot at goal, it flies over the bar though.
    • 48 No changes at half time, apart from halfs of course.
    • 46 We are back under way and nearly a chance straight away from MK, Puncheon is put through, great defending from Mirfin though, perfect sliding tackle.
    • 45 Scunthorpe started well as their tactics caused MK problems initally. But for all their possesion, there have created very few chances. Both goalkeepers have made good saves, but it remains goal less here at Stadium MK.
    • 45 Morris crosses into Trotter who looked like he may have handled it, play goes on though, he sets up Leven who drills his shot at goal and straight at the keeper. Two yards either side and it would have been one nil.
    • 45 Four minutes added time due to Howell's injury, who is now in hospital.
    • 43 The rain is really coming down hard now in Milton Keynes and it is getting hard for players to keep their footing. Wright tries to put in a cross but slips in the process and slices the ball right into the Scunthorpe fans, much too their amusement.
    • 41 Finally Puncheon gets the ball. He moves down the right, cutting on to his left beating his defender, then chops on to his right and then back on to his left, firing a shot which was too hot for Murphy to handle.
    • 40 Quick free kick on the right almost puts Grant McCann in on goal, ball gets tangled under his feet though.
    • 38 Scunthorpe's tactics is causing a lot of problems for MK's midfield, Puncheon has not seen the ball all game.
    • 34 Almost a goal for MK. Baldock wins the ball in the centre circle and then charges through the midfield with the Scunthorpe defence backing off. He drills it from 35 yards, a good save from Murphy but he cannot hold on. Re-bound falls Wilbraham who sees his shot fall just wide.
    • 33 Unlucky from Scunthorpe, good header at the backpost from Thompson, which nearly dips in at the back post, keeper would have been in trouble if on target.
    • 31 Grant McCann is booked for a cynical foul on Baldock. Trotter gives a very carless ball straight to Baldock who attacks down the left but is then taken down by McCann.
    • 30 Yellow card for Llera of MK.
    • 28 Does anyone outisde of Milton Keynes actually want Scunthorpe not to win this match? In fact, does anyone want Scunthorpe not to win these playoffs, when you consider that Leeds, Millwall and MK are three of the most disliked clubs in the league?
    • 26 Wilbraham turns Mirfin 30 yards from goal, the defender hauls him down leading to a decent free kick chance for MK. The ball in is headed away for a corner...which leads to another corner.
    • 23 Thompson goes in on goal for Scunthorpe. He runs along the edge of the box beating two men before cutting in on goal. Why didn't he shoot when he had a chance? He waited too long and the defence recovered to crowd him out. Best chance so far, Scunthorpe's front three are causing MK trouble.
    • 21 Some nice link up play outside Scunthorpe's box nearly puts Baldock in.
    • 18 I take back what I said about Howell looking fine. He has to be replaced by Alan Navarro, apparently he has no re-collection of the collison whatsoever and when walking off he didn't really seem to know who he was.
    • 16 Leven has a shot blocked inside the box after some promising build up play from MK.
    • 14 Howell is back on the pitch. He now looks fine, though he looked very ginger indeed when coming off of the pitch.
    • 13 We are back under way with MK with ten men.
    • 10 A nasty clash of heads in the middle of the pitch between Trotter and Howell. Both going up for a header and only heading each other, both players looked to land very awkwardly as well. Trotter walks off the pitch and looks ok, Howell is laying flat on his back with an ice bag on his head, looks in trouble.
    • 8 Trotter crosses from the right which has 'keeper Gueret worried and losing his bearing slightly, no one gambling at the back post to capitalise though.
    • 5 Jason Puncheon hooks a shot wide from just outside the box, a nice sharp turn to set up that effort, off target though.
    • 4 Scunthorpe have set themselves up with three strikers, perhaps trying to catch the MK Dons unaware.
    • 1 We are under way at Stadium MK.
    • - Scunthorpe: Murphy, Byrne, Crosby, Mirfin, Morris, Sparrow, Trotter, McCann, Woolford, Hayes, Thompson Subs: Lillis, Pearce, Togwell, Forte, May
    • - A big blow for Scunthorpe, top scorer Gary Hooper has failed his fitness test on his ankle, he is replaced by Gary Thompson. Just the one change for Milton Keynes from the first leg. Sam Baldock coming in to replace Luke Chadwick, who drops to the bench.
    • - Milton Keynes Dons: Gueret, Regan, Stirling, Llera, Lewington, Wright, Howell, Leven, Puncheon, Baldock, Wilbraham Subs: Abbey, Cummings, Navarro, Chadwick, Flo
    • - Welcome to Stadium MK for this League One playoff semi-final second leg where we are deadlocked at one all from the first-leg on May 8. There was a twist in the tale last night at Elland Road with Millwall shocking Leeds United. So who will be joing them at Wembley?
  • Summary

    • 120 McCann flicks the ball toward goal from the goal line, the ball is going to drop of Gueret in the MK goal but he dives back and flicks it over the bar. Very close
    • 111 That was close from Forte. He cuts in from the left and trys to steer the ball into the far corner with the outside of his left boot, it bends just wide.
