  • Live Commentary

    Time:90'
    • Manchester City
    • Aston Villa
    • 94' The whistle goes and City celebrate a win that moves them up to second in the table just the one point behind Arsenal
    • 93' Bianchi has a chance to finishing things off but Barry gets back to clear just in front of the line. Carson was nowhere and that would have been a certain goal had it not been for Barry
    • 90' Schmeichel has what is probably one last peice of work to do, which he does with more authority than he has managed for most of the afternoon collecting the ball despite the lingering Melberg trying to cause trouble
    • 89' Richards gets back to cover sweeping up which fits in nicely with his excellent performance this afternoon
    • 87' Substitute Bianchi tries his luck from distance but Carson controls the ball well and whacks the ball up field as Villa have one last roll of the dice
    • 85' Johnson, looking for his second, forces his way past Knight and watches as his blocked shot skids out for a corner
    • 84' And another as Rolando Bianchi comes on for Mpenza
    • 82' City get in the substiution mix as well replacing Elano with Michael Ball
    • 81' More substitutions for Villa: Stiliyan Petrov and Craig Gardner come on for Nigel Reo-Coker and Bouma
    • 77' Moore evens up the yellow cards tally for a dodgy tackle from behind on Corluka
    • 74' Scmeichael collects at the feet of Agbonlahor with support from Richards and City are only just holding on to their 1-0 lead
    • 72' Moore appears to have headed into the back of the net but the goal is disallowed and replays show the ball had in fact come off his arm not head. Good spot by the linesman
    • 68' Sun has barely on the pitch for four minutes but he has the dubious honour of receiving the first card of the day
    • 68' The rain is absolutely lashing it down now making conditions difficult for both sides which is being reflected in a sloppy period of play
    • 67' Agbonlahor finds Moore with a header and this could be a real chance for Villa ... but Moore is offside and once again the chance goes begging
    • 64' Vassell is the latest player for City to go down with an injury and he looks like he'll be the first player to be substituted. Indeed Sun Jihai will come on in his place
    • 62' Schmeichel appears to have hurt his foot and Joe Hart can be seen warm-up on the sidelines
    • 58' Corner to Villa ... which Young will take ... but once again Laursen fails to find the target with his header
    • 57' Again Agbonlahor fails to hit the target as Young's cross from the left surprises him and hits him in the chest
    • 56' City seem revitalised since the re-start and their goal, this win would take them to second behind Arsenal remember, as Elano whips a cross in front of the goal ... there is no-on there to do anything with the ball though and another golden chance goes begging
    • 54' Mpenza, looking for a City's second goal, tries to tap home a Petrov cross but he gets the ball tangled in his feet and his eventual shot is a poor one
    • 53' Scmeichel is still struggling to take control of the situation when Villa whip in a cross and unconvincing pushes a ball away and Young still cannot take advanatage of the chance
    • 51' Carew with a chance for the equaliser ... but he heads Boumer's cross wide
    • 49' Richards is down having fallen awkwardly. He has limped off to receive treatment but looks as though he will continue
    • 48' GOAL!! Just as Elano looks to be struggling he is involved in a slick one-two with Johnson who finishes the move by sliding the ball under Carson to put his side into the lead
    • 46' Elano seems to have picked up an injury of some sort and Rolando Bianchi is warming up on the touchline
    • 46' City get the match underway and win an immediate attacking throw-in on the left wing
    • 45' All square at half time then at Eastlands
    • 44' Another chance for Carew ... but again he seems unable to find the target this time drilling the ball wide on the right from the left of the goal
    • 43' Carew, on the counter, has a good run at goal and a chance to put Villa ahead just before the break but he skews his chance wide
    • 42' Elano, on the attack for City, tries to find Mpenza in the box but the pass is overhit and Carson collects
    • 39' Young takes the corner himself and again Schmeichel looks less than convincing in pushing the ball clear
    • 38' Young attacking on the left wing sees his attempted cross blocked by Onouha ... but wins a corner ...
    • 36' Petrov will be the man to take the corner once again ... Villa head the ball clear but only as far as Elano ... who fires the ball back into the box ... but again there are enough Villa players in the box to block the shot
    • 36' Onuoha with a chance for City sees the ball blocked by Knight ... but it will be a City corner ...
    • 32' Moore's turn to squander a chance for Villa as he drills a left-footed shot in towards Schmeichel ... the Dane just gets his hands on the ball although he almost lets it dribble in between his legs futher towards the goal
    • 30' There have been a number of chances on either side early in this first half but only one on target!
    • 27' Another great chance for Villa missed as Barry whips his left-footed corner into the box but Laursen's header drifts wide of the left post
    • 25' Foul by Onuoha Agbonlahor allowing Villa another chance to test Schmeichel's mettle ... but this time the Dane takes the ball without too much trouble
    • 25' Agbonlahor racing down the left wing will have a chance as Schmeichel makes an ill-advised charge off his line ... the ball falls out wide after a deflection and Agbonlahor will have another chance ... but Schmeichel just gets back to get a touch on the ball and the shot drops safely for the clearance
    • 21' Schmeichel is looking far from comfortable in the City goal as Barry takes a left footed corner and the Dane runs around without actually doing much to clear the danger
    • 20' Petrov will take the resulting corner ... but again City can do nothing with the set peice and the ball is cleared away safely by Villa
    • 19' Johnson now with a break down the left wing ... he gets past his man and has only Carson to beat ... GREAT SAVE BY THE VILLA KEEPER ... Carson spreads himself in front of Johnson and does enough to stop the ball which hits him smack in the face
    • 18' City are really settling into this match now as Vassell takes another shot at goal ... Knight manages to get in the way but the rebound might fall for Petrov ... who misses right
    • 16' Laursen gives away a tame free kick in a dangerous area ... Petrov curls the ball in towards Vassell, who can only head it wide of the left post
    • 15' Villa take too long to come up with anything allowing Schmeichel time to get back into position ... and the final shot from Melburg trickles wide of the right post
    • 15' Boumer makes an attacking run down the left wing whipping the ball into the area ... Schmeichel comes out for it but can only punch it a few yards and leaves himself stranded
    • 13' Another corner goes the way of City which is again taken by Petrov ... but once again they can do nothing with it and the ball drifts out of play
    • 10' Corner to City taken by Petrov swinging into the box but it is cleared by Melburg without much trouble
    • 8' Corluka recieves the ball in a threatening area but there is nothing much on for the City man and he has a go from 30 yards ... never really troubles Carson that as he whizzs wide of the left post
    • 5' Carew with a run down the right wing ... no-one is picking him up ... Carew cuts inside and shoot but it bounces off his own player and safely into the arms of Schmiechel
    • 2' City are looking lively so far enjoying the majority of possession although neither side are yet to create much of a chance
    • 1' Villa get the match underway ...
    • - Nedum Onuoha replaces Corluka in the wide position while Darius Vassell is brought in against his old club in place of Rolando Bianchi. Manchester City have switched Croatian defender Vedran Corluka from right-back to centre-half to cover for the suspended Richard Dunne for their Premier League clash at home to Aston Villa.
    • - Man City on the other hand have left out Stephen Ireland, who controversially withdrew from the Republic of Ireland squad in midweek, with Emile Mpenza brought in in his place
    • - Villa are unchanged from the team that beat Chelsea last time out, with John Carew overcoming a groin injury to retain his place. Loan signing Curtis Davies has to be content with a place on the bench.
