    Chelsea's late strike stuns Wigan

A late Frank Lampard winner continued Guus Hiddink's perfect start as Chelsea manager with a 2-1 victory over Wigan at Stamford Bridge. More

    • 90'+3 AND THAT'S IT!!! CHELSEA HAVE SNATCHED THREE POINTS AT THE DEATH! A terrific game of football just edged - and justly - by the home side, but Wigan are desperately unlucky not to have rescued a point. Thanks for joining us, and stay with us for the rest of the weekend's sporting action.
    • 90'+1 GOAL FOR CHELSEA!!!! It's Frank Lampard with a looping header that clears Kirkland and dips under the bar after Ballack's long ball was poorly headed away by Melchiot. Massive disappointment for Wigan, and the Chelsea fans are jubilant!!!
    • 88' Handball shout for Chelsea, as Wigan defender Bramble is hit on the arm by a Quaresma cross. Clearly accidental: that would have been a brutally harsh decision.
    • 87' Chelsea continue to push, with the recently brought-on Quaresma looking good on the right. And then a good cross on the other flank almost finds Ballack, but Kirkland just gets it instead.
    • 84' Great move by Anelka to get in to the box again, and he's through on the keeper - BUT GREAT SAVING TACKLE BY FIGUEROA!!! Wigan really look like they can hang on for this point, but Chelsea are pushing hard.
    • 82' Another move from Wigan comes up the right, Figueroa crosses... AND WIGAN HAVE EQUALISED!!!!!! It's Kapo at the near post who slides in and gives Cech no chance!!! A deserved equaliser for the visitors, it's got to be said.
    • 81' Anelka comes in from the right and hammers a powerful shot on target; Kirkland saves well at the near post.
    • 79' Zaki has a chance after picking up a long pass by Bramble, but he can't curl the ball enough to get it on target.
    • 78' Hugo Rodallega squanders the free kick, but Wigan retain the ball - and Scharner ends up trying a flying header that goes miles wide!
    • 76' Wigan build pressure up the left and Mancienne practically rugby tackles N'Zogbia to earn a yellow card and gift a free kick on the left edge of the box.
    • 74' Corner for Wigan, but Cech takes it well yet again. He might have been beaten once or twice - and will be grateful to his defenders today - but he's imperious as ever under the high ball.
    • 72' Lovely chance for Chelsea cut out brilliantly by Titus Bramble, who it must be said has been inspiring in defence today.
    • 70' Rodallega comes on for Cattermole - who has been excellent. And the new man steps up to take a free-kick... which he blasts in to the wall.
    • 68' Another long ball pumped in to the box by Wigan leads to another easy take by Cech, and on the counter attack Drogba seems to be through on Kirkland until Emerson Boyce makes a goal-saving tackle.
    • 65' GOALMOUTH SCRAMBLE - AND GREAT CHANCE FOR WIGAN!!! A forced corner isn't cleared by Chelsea, and three or four Wigan players have a chance to crack off shots with Lee Cattermole coming closest to finding a way through the glut of bodies in the six yard box.
    • 62' Wigan come up the pitch but yet again are forced into long-range pot-shots. They just seem to be struggling for personnel when they get in to the danger zone.
    • 59' Wigan creep back in to this game, keeping the ball a little better now and starting to push for that equaliser.
    • 56' Cracking chance for Chelsea as Anelka's lovely pass to Lampard gives the midfielder space and time on the right. His ball across goal is not good enough for any of the blue shirts, but it's another good move by Chelsea to boost their confidence further.
    • 54' Wigan prove that they're not done yet: a great ball through from Scharner for Melchiot very nearly puts the defender in... but Cech is just a bit too quick to the ball.
    • 51' GREAT CHANCE FOR CHELSEA!!! Lampard's angled run and great pass on to Drogba gives the striker a great chance... and he slots it underneath the keeper brilliantly, only for Bramble to slide in and clear off the line! Great attacking by Chelsea, incredible defending by Wigan!!
    • 50' John Terry does his best Maradona impression, trying to dribble past the Wigan defence and, if not making any headway, at least not losing the ball either. Go for it JT!
    • 48' Chelsea's first attack of the second half brings a free kick from Bramble's handball - looked accidental, but the referee is unimpressed. Lampard wins a corner from his weak free kick.
    • 46' We're back in action at Stamford Bridge. Can Wigan come back to get the equaliser or will Hiddink's Chelsea turn on the style?
    • 45'+3 Drogba pulls the ball wide, and that's the end of the half. Chelsea could have had two or three goals by now, Wigan were very, very close to taking the lead a couple of times. But with Guus Hiddink having a chance to instruct his players on closing the gaps, you have to think that Steve Bruce's team might have wasted the best chances they're going to get this afternoon.
    • 45'+2 A free kick right at the death for Chelsea as Bramble downs Drogba... and though it looks like it'll be the fifth yellow card of the half, the ref says free kick only. Drogba lines it up...
    • 45'+1 Two extra minutes to play.
    • 45' As the half draws to a close, Wigan have a long free kick in to the box to try to get an equaliser that, on the overall run of play, they would deserve.
    • 43' Lampard lines up a free kick from 35 yards out... and he hits a bouncing, dipping attempt that Kirkland deals with smartly.
    • 41' From the corner Drogba hits brilliant shot that ricochets off a defender, the rebound falling to Terry who tries another impudent kick... but this time shows why defence is his natural home.
    • 40' More pressure from Chelsea as Mancienne comes up the right flank now, but his ball in is cut out by Melchiot.
    • 38' Another chance for Lampard as Drogba back-heels to put him in to space... but the England midfielder's soft, curling effort doesn't have enough welly on it to beat Kirkland.
    • 37' FANTASTIC BREAK FROM CHELSEA!!! From the Wigan Corner, Anelka charges up the pitch, combines with Kalou as his team-mates join him and Lampard ends up free, coming in on the goalkeeper with no defenders... but he tries to jink and chip rather than shooting, and the chance goes begging!
    • 35' Mikel - who's been hacked all over the park - gets his own back with a hefty challenge on Zaki. The free kick is bumped in by N'Zogbia, and Cech concedes a corner.
    • 33' Amr Zaki makes a bit of space for himself down the left flank and cuts in - but with nobody in support he's forced to shoot at too fine an angle.
    • 31' A lovely header from Anelka - getting on to the end of Lampard's corner - flies just a couple of feet wide on the left... but it had plenty of power.
    • 30' Chelsea's free kick gives Kalou half a chance to get on the end of something, but he runs out of space.
    • 28' Lee Cattermole hacks Mikel down and earns a yellow.
    • 28' A corner gives Alex a chance to score, but it's a good save from Kirkland.
    • 27' Terry's stunning goal - extraordinary to see him score without using his head, so to speak - has given the Blues a huge boost and they're pressing more and more now.
    • 25' From the corner Lampard puts in a cross that's cleared by Bramble's header... BUT ONLY SO FAR AS TERRY, WHO VOLLEYS HOME!!!! 1-0!!! A stunning scissor-kick volley from the skipper just a minute after Wigan had come so close to taking the lead.
    • 24' A yellow for N'Zogbia as he chops Mikel down - Lampard hits the free kick too far, but Anelka fetches it and forces a corner.
    • 22' Chelsea show that they have teeth too, as Drogba gets on to a lovely pass from Anelka and fires just wide across goal. A deflection on the shot means it's a corner, from which Mikel unleashes a perfect volley shot that's brilliantly saved by Chris Kirkland.
    • 22' Unbelievable stuff - Wigan should certainly be leading on this evidence. Is the honeymoon over already for Hiddink?
    • 21' From the free kick Titus Bramble has a chance at the header AND IT'S ON TARGET - BUT OFF THE LINE!!!! AND FROM THE FOLLOW UP TERRY CLEARS OFF THE LINE!!!
    • 20' John Terry pulls N'Zogbia down just as the Wigan winger seems to be about to break free - cynical one, and he deserves his yellow card.
    • 18' First decent, cohesive move from Chelsea ends in a weak shot from Anelka - good going, though - only for Wigan to charge up the other end and enjoy a great chance at the other end as Scharner is clean through on Cech... but shoots just wide!!
    • 16' The hosts defend the corner well, and try to reassert their authority - but once again, Wigan's dayglo-yellow shirted men steal the ball.
    • 15' Lovely run from Melchiot who is brought down - accidentally says the referee - but Kapo gets the loose ball and unleashes a lovely shot that would have had half a chance if it hadn't deflected wide off Terry's foot. Corner.
    • 14' Another movement up the pitch from Wigan, and they force another corner. They're really showing the form that has kept them comfortably out of this year's relegation dogfight.
    • 12' The chance is wasted: Melchiot passes short to Kapo who blazes 10 yards wide to the left with a poor shot that's a senseless of posession.
    • 11' Crunching body check tackle by John Terry on Kapo, and Wigan have a chance to kick in a long free kick.
    • 9' Alex arrives about 12 seconds late for a tackle and earns a booking for his trouble.
    • 8' Fresh-faced 21-year-old Mancienne hammers a good clearance away from Kapo. It's a great chance for the young defender to make a mark on the team.
    • 7' Another half a chance for Chelsea as Anelka gets a pass up to Drogba, but it's not accurate enough. Chelsea hustle a corner and keep attacking.
    • 5' Half a chance for Drogba, coming in to get on to the end of a long free kick in, but Figueroa does just enough to shield the ball away.
    • 3' Plenty of midfield tussling so far, with Chelsea trying to get through but unable to do so.
    • 1' Under way here at Stamford Bridge, and Wigan win an early corner. It's overhit and clears everyone to fly safely away.
    • - The Blues must be massive favourites to win here today: new boss Guus Hiddink has enjoyed a flying start to his time in South West London... Not so much for the fact that he's enjoyed two wins on the trot, but for the fact that they've been against Aston Villa and Juventus.
    • - For Wigan, Ben Watson is suspended giving Paul Scharner a start. Otherwise the side is unchanged from the team which 'enjoyed' a goalless draw at Middlesbrough last weekend. Wigan: Kirkland, Melchiot, Bramble, Boyce, Figueroa, Cattermole, Brown, Scharner, Kapo, Zaki, N'Zogbia. Subs: Kingson, Edman, Sibierski, Rodallega, Kupisz, Routledge, Holt.
    • - The teams are in now, with Chelsea's only new face from the Juventus match in mid-week being Michael Mancienne replacing the suspended Bosingwa at right-back. Chelsea: Cech, Mancienne, Alex, Terry, Ashley Cole, Ballack, Mikel, Lampard, Kalou, Anelka, Drogba. Subs: Hilario, Ivanovic, Di Santo, Malouda, Quaresma, Ferreira, Belletti.
