    • 29' GOAL! BENT OPENS THE SCORING FOR SPURS! Corluka's ball in isn't dealt with by Ferdinand as he jumps with the Spurs striker... it drops kindly for Bent and he gleefully fires in from close range! Spurs lead!
    • 27' Fletcher nearly gets on the end of a little scramble in the box! It comes out to Rooney... but his effort from 25 yards is well over the bar!
    • 26' Into the wall, not for the first time this season, and probably not the last! Ronaldo appeals for handhall but referee Webb waves play on...
    • 25' Palacios Trips Nani, but the Portuguese staggers on... across comes Woodgate to finish the job and United have a free-kick 30 yards out, centre-ish.
    • 24' Oooh! Ronaldo heads just wide from Nani's cross! But he should have left it for Berbatov, who was unmarked, just behind him and in a better position to find the target!
    • 23' Aaron Lennon v Patrice Evra is rapidly shaping up to be a vital battle on the pitch today... and at the moment the Spurs man seems to have the edge with the ball on the deck.
    • 22' United try to break now, but Nani's ball towards Berbatov is poor and the move stalls momentarily...
    • 21' Ronaldo has a pop at goal from the resulting free-kick! It's an awkward one to deal with, bouncing just in front of Gomes, but the Brazilian does well to make the save!
    • 20' Berbatov hits the deck after a clash with Jenas... it's a flailing arm, nothing more, and no intent whatsoever.
    • 19' Corluka tries to take on Evra down the Spurs right... but the Frenchman gets in front of him and shields the ball out of play.
    • 18' Unied are attacking the Stretford End this half, and that means Van der Sar has the sun right in his face to contend with. That could well prove to be a factor...
    • 16' Nani now fancies his chances from distance... way over the bar from the Portuguese...
    • 15' United are enjoying more possession at the moment...
    • 13' Berbatov gets the ball again, and boos ring out... not sure if they are coming from the away section or the home fans... but if it is the home fans, there are certainly more who are willing to cheer him.
    • 11' Lovely build up play by United! Berbatov is the architect, playing it to Fletcher who in turn feeds Rooney... but he decides to cut back inside, allowing Corluka to get back and make the challenge!
    • 10' Oooh! At the other end, Rafael delivers a teasing ball towards Rooney! But the England man can't get his head to it!
    • 8' BENT! Ooh! Lennon delivers another great ball in towards the far post! Bent is there with a header that Van der Sar is forced to push behind for a Spurs corner!
    • 7' Oh dear, Palacios goes in two-footed on Ronaldo... but the Portuguese skips past his challenge... lucky for him, because that could have been serious had he been caught.
    • 6' Berbatov wins a throw off King and the crowd roars its approval! They're certainly backing the Bulgarian so far...
    • 5' Fletcher gets through the Spurs defence... great take on his chest but his final ball is poor and well over everyone...
    • 4' Now Ronaldo has a go at the Spurs defence... nothing doing this time, but it's an open start to the game!
    • 3' At the other end, Lennon gets the better of Vidic and sends over a great cross in the danger area between the keeper and the last line of defence! But there's no one there to capitalise!
    • 2' Fletcher plays it through for Berbatov! Can he reach it? No! Gomes is off his line quickly to claim at the Bulgarian's feet!
    • 1' Here we go! Underway at Old Trafford!
    • - Ledley King and Jermaine Jenas come into the Tottenham line-up, but Jermain Defoe does not feature following the death of his brother.
    • - So, Berbatov gets the nod... interesting too see how he will be welcomed by the Old Trafford faithful - the same people who booed his name in midweek. Carlos Tevez, an altogether more loved player, is named on the bench, but 800-appearance-chasing Ryan Giggs is not even among the substitutes.
    • - And today's referee is Howard Webb (S Yorkshire).
    • - Tottenham: Gomes, Corluka, Woodgate, King, Assou-Ekotto, Lennon, Palacios, Jenas, Modric, Keane, Bent - Subs: Cudicini, Hutton, Bale, Zokora, Bentley, Huddlestone, Chimbonda
    • - The teams are in... Man Utd: Van der Sar, Rafael Da Silva, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Ronaldo, Carrick, Fletcher, Nani, Berbatov, Rooney - Subs: Foster, Anderson, Scholes, O'Shea, Evans, Tevez, Macheda
    • - United need to avoid defeat to reclaim top spot this evening after Liverpool's win over Hull... but of course they'll be wanting all three points as they welcome Spurs to Old Trafford.

  7. The way Spurs collapsed against Man U is worrying. OK, so the penalty was a home-town decision. But Spurs supporters should be more upset by shipping four goals after that. Soon as Man U upped the tempo in the second half, Spurs couldn’t cope. Most of the Man U goals came from the right. This confirms that the Spurs left-midfield is weak defensively. Modric is supposed to play out left, but he’s more at home in central midfield, in the hole behind the strikers. And like Lennon and Jenas, Modric is simply not strong enough defensively to keep out the likes of Ronaldo, Rooney & company. So Spurs need another holding midfielder to partner Palacios. Perhaps Corluka, once he no longer has to fill in for Hutton at right-back; otherwise Zokora or O’Hara. This might mean adopting a 4-2-3-1 or 4-5-1 formation against strong attacking sides.
Spurs also need to create more balance out wide going forward. Much of the attacking threat comes from Lennon on the right. On the left there’s too much reliance on Assou-Ekotto to overlap from full-back to provide crosses. Spurs need a natural left-footed winger. If Harry doesn’t rate Bale, he’ll need to buy someone like Downing or Duff.
The Man U result may have been a blessing in disguise. After the great results of recent weeks it looked as if Spurs might challenge the top four next season. This result has shown the team is not ready yet. It will first have to get a better balance

  9. The other game I referenced was the Newcastle v Man City game last October.
Beye dived back to tackle Robinho as he entered the box - Beye got a slight touch on the ball as well as bringing down the player. The ball changed direction slightly. Styles was the ref.
This is the incident over which Graham Poll, on Setanta's Football Matters show expanded on the directives over tackles in the Penalty box.

From omahonyi, on Mon 27 Apr 5:06PM
  10. Part 2
the referee then judges, If the player was not taken down, could he have still played the ball and had an attempt on goal. If this is true then a penalty is given. This applied in the game at newcastle in question, and it also applied on saturday against tottenham. Carrick nudged the ball round Gomez, Gomez got a slight thouch aswell but also brought carrick down preventing him from continuing his attack. Nobody in commentary or in the studios realised this part of the rules. Perhaps we should all actually refresh ourselves on the rules and regs with these regards before going bananas over these incidents. It would also help if refs explained these things more often too

  15. Penalty incident.
Need to break this into two, keep getting invalid comment
    Part 1
Carrick did touch the ball to try and round Gomez, but Gomez then got a slight touch and brought carrick down. In the past I would have said what everyone is saying... Keeper touches ball - No penno. But that's actually not the directives given to referees.
Graham Poll was on Football matters (Setanta) a couple of months ago and was asked about a similar incident up at newcastle where the Newcastle defender did something similar, ie. got a slight touch on the ball and brought attacker down in the box. Poll explained that getting a slight touch on the ball doesn't give licence to bring the player down.
