    • - So with Hull earning a point off Bolton, Middlesbrough will need to win and win handsomely to stand any chance of surviving next weekend. But with Hull facing newly-crowned champions Manchester United anything could still happen... What a climax we could see.
    • 90'+3 Cormer for Villa... and the ball ends up running straight across the Boro goal line!!! That would have been the curtain for certain - and the whistle goes to keep them alive... just!
    • 90'+2 We're well into injury time now, but Boro are still pumping long balls up field - as are Villa, who have looked better and better in hese last few minutes...
    • 90' Newcastle have lost, but Hull are hanging on to their point against Bolton...
    • 89' Carew whips a ball into the six-yard box - and Heskey's head is all of two inches shy of nodding it in for the knife-twisting winner!
    • 87' There's players going down with cramp - huge gaps in the defences opening up - it's getting crazy, and results elsewhere still look ominous for Boro...
    • 85' Milner puts a ball in - AND GREAT HEADER BY HESKEY, BUT JUST OVER THE BAR!!!! That would have been the end for Boro... but they're all but relegated now in any case unless they can grab that winner.
    • 83' It's getting frantic now - you can smell the desperation emnating from the Boro players, they are scrapping with every ounce of strength now... but Villa are showing their quality.
    • 81' A great spell of pressire from Boro leads to a chance for Tuncay - and he lobs it well over Friedel but just over the bar and on to the roof of the net!
    • 77' Here come Boro again - but it's cleared and Villa hit on the break!
    • 76' Tuncay drives the free kick into the wall and follows up well - deflected over off Heskey's back, but the ref says no corner!
    • 75' Middlesbrough need to get things moving desperately now, and Tuncay makes a start by winning a free kick right in front of goal and just over 30 yards out...
    • 73' Great chance for Villa after a corner leads to a goalmouth scramble, but Wheater is there to clear off the line frmo Agbonlahor's header!!!
    • 71' It's Gary O'Neil coming off for Walker.
    • 69' Reo-Coker is on for Young, and now Boro will shortly make a change too.
    • 68' Young down and looking sore again - he's really hobbling now and will be coming off.
    • 67' Boro are in desperate trouble if they can't find a winner from here, but it's Villa who are making most of the running in this half. They seem to have acres of space and aeons of time gifted by their hosts.
    • 65' Boro get back into the business end of the pitch, but Tuncay misses the target with his snatched effort.
    • 64' Young is off the field with a bit of a knock - doesn't look too bad on first glance, we'll see what happens.
    • 63' Agbonlahor follows up, and puts a cross into the box but it's well cleared.
    • 62' Great chance for Ashley Young as he's clean through with the keeper to beat - but he tries to dribble it round the keeper and gets caught out! That should have been 2-1!
    • 60' King brought down by Cuellar and it's a free kick for Boro near the left corner...
    • 58' Villa come again from the re-start - and it's a great chance for Petrov to add another, but he can't quite get connect with it and drags it across goal!
    • 56' GOAL FOR VILLA!!!! It's Carew, who dances through the box with defenders reluctant to tackle for fear of conceding a penalty - but he finds space to toe-poke a shot through the throng and it's in the back of the net!!! No chance at all for the keeper, and that's a massive blow for Southgate's boys.
    • 54' Great chance for Villa as Cuellar heads goalward drawing a great save from Jones - but Villa keep pressing and win another free kick as Barry is brought down.
    • 53' The Boro free kick misses everyone, and Villa clear back upfield to attack...
    • 52' Two yellow cards in a matter of seconds for the visitors, first Barry penalised for a flying elbow and then Milner is booked for charging in on O'Neill as if he's playing British Bulldogs rather than football.
    • 51' Oooohhh... half-chance for Boro as King tussles with Cuellar - the free kick goes Villa's way, but Emnes would have been clean through if King had kept himself to himself!
    • 49' It's mostly Villa in this half so far, with Shorey coming up now to attack and getting floored for his efforts - no foul says the ref, though if Wheather got a foot on the ball there then I'm an Iranian physicist.
    • 48' Newcastle and Hull both still trail at the start of the second half. Could we be heading for one of those ridiculously nailbiting final days?
    • 46' We're back under way at the Riverside, and it's Villa who make the better start as they look to sort out their loose and ineffective football from the first half.
    • 45'+5 The whistle goes, and the spectators who have turned up this afternoon - for the ground is far from full - are loving every minute of this at the moment. They give their boys a standing ovation! And is there a steely glint in Gareth Southgate's eye there?
    • 45'+3 Villa come up and Emile Heskey has a pop from the right-hand side of the penalty box - but gets right underneath it and pumps it well over the post. Still, it's a much better spell from Villa in these last few minutes.
    • 45'+2 Is this the start of a remarkable fightback for Boro? News from around the grounds is that Hull and Newcastle are both trailing. If it stayed that way all three would be level on points with one match left.
    • 45' Stewart Downing's lengthy injury means there will be five extra minutes to play in this half.
    • 44' Villa make a rare incursion into the Boro half, but the home defence keep plugging the gaps as the opposing attackers probe for space.
    • 42' Great ball releases Emnes, but he's without enough support to make the most of it.
    • 40' Boro are tearing pieces off Villa this afternoon, this is a great display from Southgate's men. Where has this spirit been all year?
    • 39' Emnes picks himself up from the penalty disappointment and splits the defence open, dragging the ball back for Hoyte to unleash a lovely shot that requires Friedel's best full-length dive to direct it around the post.
    • 37' Big penalty shout at the corner as Carew brings down Emnes very clumsily right in the box - but amazingly it's not given!
    • 37' Boro push back upfield, and they're queueing up to have a go - Hoyte wins a corner as his free kick is deflected over.
    • 35' From the corner Barry floats in a lobbed shot which is dipping just under the bar, but hte keeper takes it well.
    • 35' Another corner for Villa as Young releases Carew, whose cross is played out by Huth.
    • 34' Great spell for Villa as Young puts a very dangerous ball across the box - it's headed clear by Huth, but falls to Heskey who forces a corner.
    • 33' O'Neill floats in the free kick nicely, but Davies gets there ahead of the flotilla of attackers.
    • 32' Villa try pushing back up but the Boro back four are habving none of it; a long clearance from Hoyte releases Johnson who is tackled badly - and it's another free kick.
    • 30' At the half-hour mark it's been mostly Middlesbrough, with only that golden chance for Agbonlahor giving Villa a decent look at goal.
    • 29' The attack fizzles out under good defensive pressure from Villa - pushing their hosts back.
    • 28' Free kick for Boro on the right edge of the pitch - Johnson takes...
    • 26' A bit of a reshuffle in the Boro pack, as Tuncay comes back into the centre, King goes up front and O'Neill fills the gap on the left flank.
    • 25' The stretcher removes Downing - is that the end of his Boro career, you have to ask? - and Marlon King comes on in his place.
    • 23' Terrible news for Boro: Downing is going to come off. He gave it a go but is back on the floor again now and looks like he's waiting for the stretcher. That could be the end of his season - Petrov just trod on his twisted foot in that earlier challenge, accidental rather than malicious though.
    • 21' Downing is back on the pitch in time to see Villa push back up, but despite Carew's ball juggling it goes off for a goal kick.
    • 19' Downing is still off for treatment, but the match gets under way with a free kick for Boro - flag up for offside, and Villa regain possession.
    • 17' Nasty - if accidental - injury for Stewart Downing as he twists his right foot while trying to avoid Petrov. That would be a disaster for Boro.
    • 16' If that turns out to be the goal that keeps Boro up it'll be the best £30 million goal ever scored - what an effort from the Turkish striker... but it's still early days, look what happened to Wigan midweek.
    • 13' WHAT A GOAL FROM TUNCAY!!!!!!!! INCREDIBLE OVERHEAD KICK AND BORO ARE IN THE LEAD!!!!! Downing found space to shoot, and when the ball ricocheted into the air inside the box it veered towards the Boro man, whose overhead finish was perfectly directed into the far corner of the net - no chance at all for Friedel.
    • 11' From the corner Villa try unsuccessfully to get back into the box, and at the third time of asking Boro regain possession.
    • 10' Agbonlahor is played through on Jones by Shorey, and has a free attempt from the left corner of the six-yard box - but sidefoots straight at the keeper while attempting the nutmeg.
    • 9' It's one of those ludicrously complicated what-if scenarios for Boro's survival hopes, but they've made a good start in pursuit of the six points they need.
    • 7' Boro come up well, with Downing finding space to release O'Neill, who fires it in - and Tuncay gets a powerful header away! It's saved by Friedel, but the flag was up anyway - still a very good start for the men in red.
    • 5' A half-chance for Boro as Johnson plays in a cross and Arca gets a head in from Downing's head back across the box - but it's weak and looping into Friedel's arms.
    • 3' Now Villa come upfield and Ashley Young plays Heskey into the box, but a desperate clearance from Wheater lets the home fans breathe again.
    • 1' Straight from the kick off Boro push up the pitch and Stewart Downing forces Gareth Barry to concede the corner under pressure. Nothing comes from it but still a nice start for the under-pressure home side.
    • - The teams are on the pitch at the Riverside for what could be Middlesbrough's last chance to realistically give themselves a chance to survive this season in the Premier League. Three points today and they have half a chance; any less, and they could well be doomed.
