    • - Thanks for joining us tonight... see you at the weekend for more Premier League action, with a sprinkling of FA Cup thrown in for good measure!
    • 90'+3 There goes the final whistle! And United run out 2-1 winners... although it wasn't the easiest of victories for the champions!
    • 90'+2 Gutierrez goes into the book for a bad challenge from behind on Park...
    • 90 Here comes Giggs... at Berbatov's expense...
    • 88' Time running out for Newcastle to snatch something from this game... Ryan Giggs is getting ready to enter the fray.
    • 85' Martins lets fly! Cracking effort from the Nigerian! But Van der Sar is equal to it and pulls off a save we have become used to seeing from him...
    • 82' Lualua comes on replace Smith as Newcastle look to snatch a late equaliser...
    • 79' Ronaldo's through here... he beats Taylor for pace... Harper hares off his line to make the block but it only goes straight to Rooney... the keeper's well off his line... it must be! No! Rooney goes for the top corner, but can only fire over the bar!
    • 76' Here comes a first change for Newcastle... off goes Ryan Taylor and on comes Andrew Carroll.
    • 72' Oooh! What a break from United! Rooney and Ronaldo are involved before Berbatov is teed up on the edge of the box... he cracks it goalwards and Harper is forced into action once again, this time tipping over the bar for another United corner!
    • 69' Rooney! He cuts inside and lets fly with a curling effort from 25 yards! Harper does well to hang on to the shot though...
    • 65' Trouble here for Ryan Taylor... he clashes with Evra and the ref feels the need to have a quiet word with the pair of them.
    • 63' Ronalo with a beautiful backheel to Park who's in on goal! But Bassong puts in a superb tackle to halt the South Korean in his tracks!
    • 60' Penalty shout for Newcastle as Martins falls under the challenge of Evra... play on says the ref and in fairness, it was only the crowd who appealed... Martins simply got up and carried on playing.
    • 58' Vidic is back on....
    • 57' Moments later, Park gets the better of Jose Enrique on the United right... he centres for Rooney! But he can't get a decent connection on it and the chance goes begging...
    • 56' GOAL! BERBATOV PUTS UNITED AHEAD! It comes from nothing... Steven Taylor tries to chest a long ball forward back to his keeper... but he makes a total hash of it allowing Park in to square the ball across the face of goal where Berbatov gratefully slots home!
    • 55' Nothing comes of the corner as Rooney slots into the centre of defence for the time being!
    • 54' Before it can be taken, Vidic is sent off to get some treatment for the blue egg that has appeared on his cheekbone...
    • 54' Evra sends in a deep cross, and Harper is forced to help it behind for another United corner!
    • 52' More danger for United as Lovenkrands races to latch on to long ball forward... Van der Sar hares off his line to meet it and gets there just before the Dane!
    • 50' Needless to say, Vidic is back on the pitch before you can say 'He comes from Serbia, he'll....' Hard. Man.
    • 49' Vidic is down here... and there's blood dripping down his face. Again. He's blaming an elbow from Martins, but the Nigerian is protesting his innocence...
    • 47' Strong run from Evra now... he plays a one-two with Rooney... but it stopped in his tracks as Coloccini steps in to stamp out the danger.
    • 46' The news is that Taylor's booking was not for raising his arm towards Ronaldo, but for an earlier offence... which means he went unpunished for that.
    • 46' Back underway in the north-east!
    • - Ferdinand is shown a yellow card on his way down the tunnel... the United skipper was livid about that challenge on Ronaldo and talked himself into the book.
    • 45'+2 There goes the half-time whistle and the teams head in locked at 1-1 after a pulsating half of football!
    • 45'+1 Ronaldo shrieks out in agony as Steven Taylor appears to raise an arm and send him into the advertising hoardings! Yellow for the Newcastle man...
    • 43' Taylor slips and it could prove costly as Evra advances forward... he pulls the ball back to Park who lets fly! It's heading in until it hits Rooney and bounces away to safety!
    • 41' Carrick now dinks a lovely little pass through for Rooney! But this time the United man is wayward with his swinging boot and he makes a hash of his attempted volley!
    • 39' Oooh! Vidic goes so close to putting United ahead! It's a wonderful corner by Carrick that gets past everyone except the Serbian... but he somehow he manages to head high and wide as he stoops to meet it!
    • 36' Great stuff from Geremi in the centre of the park as the Cameroonian slides in to dispossess Rooney! That brought a cheer from the home crowd!
    • 35' Carrick takes it, but Harper is there to punch away from immediate danger.
    • 34' Ronaldo now fires goalwards! It takes a deflection off Ryan Taylor for another corner!
    • 33' Harper concedes a second corner immediately, but United can't capitalise and Newcastle are able to clear their lines.
    • 32' Straight down to the other end and Evra wins a corner! Phew! You can't keep you eyes off this one! Chances at both ends!
    • 31' United under pressure once again from a corner... and again Van der Sar looks suspect on the cross, as his punch hits a Newcastle player... cue an almighty scramble which ends with a Martins shot being blocked by Ferdinand!
    • 28' Lovely stuff by Gutierrez... he somehow skips past Fletcher on the Newcastle left but his final ball is poor and goes out of play... from the sublime to the ridiculous in the space of seconds.
    • 24' Jose Enrique gets down the Newcastle left and delivers a peach of a cross... it's slightly deflected right into the danger area between keeper and the last line of defence! Lovenkrands is snooping about, but it evades everyone this time!
    • 23' This has been a cracking start to the game... end to end stuff so far!
    • 22' But penalty shout for United as Berbatov's cross clearly strikes Bassong on the hand! But referee Steve Bennett waves play on!
    • 20' GOAL! ROONEY EQUALISES! O'Shea plays the ball into the United striker on the edge of the box... his first touch is exquisite, controlling and turning in one swift movement before firing into the roof of the net, via a small deflection! 1-1 now!
    • 19' Ryan Taylor steps up... but his effort flies over the wall and the bar!
    • 18' Martins has the United defence rattled here... again he has the beating of Vidic, who takes him out right on the edge of the area and earns a booking for the foul.
    • 16' Ronaldo spread his legs in his now customary stance, before hitting the wall with one of his now customary efforts.
    • 15' Ronaldo wins a free-kick after Smith upends him right on the edge of the box... danger here.
    • 14' But United come straight back down the other end and win a corner... from it, Rooney picks up the ball and flashes a shot wide of the mark!
    • 13' Oooh! Martins fires a low drive into the side netting on another quick break, started by some nice work by Lovenkrands! Newcastle are looking dangerous!
    • 12' Rooney brings Harper into action with a snap shot from the edge of the area! But the Toon keeper does well to hang on to it!
    • 10' This has suddenly become a real test for the champions... in their favour is the fact that they have 80 minutes to hit back.
    • 9' GOAL! INCREDIBLE! NEWCASTLE TAKE THE LEAD! It's Lovenkrands who nets, but it's a terrible error from Van der Sar, who spills a Gutierrez cross right into the Toon striker's path! It's an absolute gift from the man who had not conceded a Premier League goal in 1,302 minutes of football dating back to November 8.
    • 8' Nothing comes of the corner and Newcastle can break...
    • 7' Here comes Ronaldo for the first time tonight... the Toon defence back off him and the Portuguese wins a corner after his shot is deflected behind.
    • 6' Steven Taylor curls in a good-looking cross... but van der Sar is there to claim!
    • 5' The crowd are also up for this one... the locals are doing their best to spur their team on in the opening exchanges.
    • 3' But United have started very well... Rooney has threatened to run through on goal on three occasions... twice he's been caught offside and the third time Coloccini halts his run...
    • 2' Martins looks in the mood tonight already! He hares off on a run towards goal and lets fly! But his effort is wide of Van der Sar's upright...
    • 2' There's a smattering of snow on the pitch... although not in either penalty area, where Mr Plough has done a good job.
    • 1' Here we go! Underway at St James'!
    • - For Newcastle, Nicky Butt misses out on facing his former club, but another ex-Red Alan Smith comes in to replace him. Meanwhile, Geremi replaces Shola Ameobi.
    • - The teams are in and as expected Manchester United have brought back their big guns... Edwin van der Sar, Nemanja Vidic, Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher, Park Ji-Sung, Dimitar Berbatov and Wayne Rooney all return after having missed the Carling Cup win over Spurs.
    • - If you want more information on how the Magpies' season has gone so far with results, fixtures and more stats you can an waggle a stick at, click on the Newcastle team page
    • - Newcastle, who took a point off United at Old Trafford on the opening day of the season, will be desperate to capitalise on any tired legs, given they are still facing the prospect of being involved in an end of season relegation battle.
    • - But it's not going to be plain sailing for United as they could well be suffering from a little tiredness after the weekend's Carling Cup final win - a view that boss Alex Ferguson agrees with.
    • - Despite Chelsea and Liverpool's respective wins last night, United are still well in the driving seat in the title race and victory tonight will see the reigning champions open up a seven-point lead once again, with a further game in hand.
