    Newcastle United's troubles at the wrong end of the Premier League continued after a goalless draw with Portsmouth at St James' Park. More

    • 90+5 And that is the final whistle! Toon are held, no good to them at all really as they are still in the bottom three and three points from safety, as Pompey edge one point closer to safety!
    • 90+4 The free-kick is headed clear but it drops to Coloccini on the right wing with loads of time and space but he tries a spectacular volley and sends it over! Silly effort, he had time and space to do whatever he wanted!
    • 90+3 Mullins with a needless trip on Jonas, free-kick toon on the left which Guthrie will swing in...
    • 90+2 Toon half-clear it and Johnson on the right in space, he drills it low across the box but wide of the far post and ahead of Crouch! Down the other end James flies out to claim the ball, is blocked by his own defender but pounces on to the loose ball and gives his back four a earful for switching off.
    • 90+1 Johnson with another good run down the right to win a corner off the feet of Duff.
    • 90' Coloccini fouls Hreidarsson just outside the box and Riley gives it but the Icelandic has a go for not showing a card - it was a pretty dirty tackle - and almost talks himself into a second yellow. The free kick comes to nothing in the end.

    • 57' Nugent on the edge of the Newcastle box but he's all on his own and the ball spins away from him, Hughes has a pop bu blocked... still with Pompey though and Mullins tries one from the right but well wide of the far post.
    • 56' Mullins in to Crouch from the right, he lays it off to Davis but he sends a poor shot well over.
    • 55' Long ball over the top and Martins gets behind Campbell and he's in but James flies out to the edge of the box and knees the ball away! Good keeping.

Surely a penalty but nothing given, a goal kick is awarded. That was a penalty, Coloccini got nothing of the ball and went into Crouch's heel. Riley had a great view of that too.

    • - FIRST-HALF STATS: Eight shots to Newcastle and three to Pompey but both with one on target; Toon had 55% of the possession and 30% more accurate passes.
    • 45+3 Short corner routine but Davis is sold, um, short and it's out for a throw. Hreidarsson puts it in but a foul throw, oh dear. The ref blows for half-time, goalless but it picked up later in the half.
    • 45+2 Delay on taking the corner as Mike Riley calls Hreidarsson across and shows a yellow card for raising his arms to Beye.
    • 45+1 Hreidarsson gets forward on the left and wins a corner off the sliding challenge of Coloccini.
    • 45' Guthrie pops up on the right again but his cross is cleared by Johnson. Pompey break but Crouch loses it, tackles are flying in, this is great stuff now but Distin gets his foot on the ball and Pompey can clear.
    • 44' Butt gets in down the right and launches a good cross for Martins to attack but James punches clear.. still with Toon as Coloccini muscles his way forward, wide to Beye who crosses and it rebounds off Distin FOR MARTINS WHO MUST SCORE BUT FIRES OVER! It took a deflection but he had to keep that low. Corner.
    • 43' Toon eventually scramble it clear and launch it long, Distin with a poor clearance and it's a throw on the right wing for Newcastle.
    • 42' Corner to Pompey on the left but Toon are livid because they are convinced Davis caught Butt late first. Davis takes, sends it high into the box but Harper gets a great punch on it. Still with Pompey though...
    • 41' Guthrie to take the free-kick but straight at the two-man wall and out for a corner. He sends that into the six-yard box but a push from Viduka on Hreidarsson gives Pompey some respite.
    • 40' Guthrie plays it wide for Beye to chase and Belhadj is with him but fouls him and it's a free-kick on the right. Yellow card, bit harsh that.
    • 39' Guthrie swings the corner in from the left and James flies through a group of bodies to punch away, Smith on the right crosses and VIDUKA WITH THE HEADER BUT OVER! This is much more like it from the hosts.
    • 38' Corner to Newcastle on the right which Guthrie will take... he swings it out to the penalty spot and Coloccini flies in but cleared, it lands at the feet of DUFF WITH A BRILLIANT DRIVE BUT TIPPED BEHIND BY JAMES! Corner.
    • 37' Crouch is penalised for a foul on Butt on the edge of the Toon box, he barely did anything but the slightest arm movement from Crouch sends a long, rangy limb across Butt's neck.
    • - Newcastle have had 56% of the ball but no shots on target yet.
    • 35' Toon attack, Owen through the middle and he slips it to Viduka who tries to shoot but can't get his foot around it, it breaks to Smith on the edge of the box and he unleashes a rising drive but just over!
    • 34' Harper punches the corner away and Toon clear. Butt has gone down again but to tie his boots, which have been filled up somewhat by the strapping placed on his foot by the physio.
    • 33' Coloccini with a weak attempt at a defensive header, now it's with Hreidarsson, Belhadj on the left knocks it back to Davis who shoots but tipped over by Harper. Butt returns to the field of play.
    • 32' Oh goodness me, Butt is down now, he has hurt his foot and it looks like he could be in trouble.
    • 31' Smith takes a swipe at Belhadj, that surely is a yellow card but only a free-kick.
    • 30' Smith on the right crosses but headed clear by Campbell... now Guthrie has it on the edge of the box, he shoots low and Viduka sticks a foot out to divert it past the diving James but Johnson slides across to put it out for a corner!
    • 29' Newcastle come forward with Martins and Owen combining now Smith on the edge of the box and his shot hits Hreidarsson on the arm but nothing given! There was little he could have done about that to be fair.
    • 28' NEWCASTLE SUB: You've got to feel for Jose Enrique, he really wanted to play but it was too soon. Guthrie, weirdly, comes on in his place, looks like Duff is going to play left back. That's risky...
    • 27' Jose Enrique has sat himself down, his hamstring has gone again. Oh dear, the last thing they needed.
    • 25' Jose Enrique is struggling, he only just returned from injury and his thigh is giving him grief...
    • 22' Good play by Pompey as Campbell plays a great ball wide left with the outside of his boot, backheeled by Hreidarsson to Belhadj who can clip a cross in for Nugent but gets it all wrong, about a foot over his head. Maybe he thought Crouch was there...
    • 21' Belhadj with the left-wing free-kick but an awful delivery flies out for a goal kick... the ball is played long for Martins who chases it down but Campbell gets ahead of him to tidy up.
    • 20' Johnson pops up on the left, Bassong pulls his shirt and it's a free-kick and a yellow card.
    • 19' Newcastle clear the corner but it's back with Pompey....
    • 18' Belhadj races down the left, for some reason Martins is covering at full-back and Belhadj swings it far post where Crouch is unmarked, just too long for him but he controls it well and puts it low across the area where Bassong mis-hits it but, mercifully for Toon, it goes out for a corner.
    • 17' Almost played through to Nugent but Newcastle clear and break but Martins's touch lets him down.... it's lofted forward by Bassong and Viduka flicks on but straight to James.
    • 16' The corner is swung over by Johnson but Crouch fouls Bassong at the far post and Newcastle have a free kick.
    • 15' Johnson seems to be the man to take it but Hreidarsson is alongside him and Davis and Belhadj are next to the ball to touch it on... Touched to Johnson who shapes to shoot but then slips left and fires a surprise low shot on goal that is put wide with Crouch about to finish! Corner.
    • 14' Coloccini gives away a free-kick with a high boot on Nugent after Crouch won a flick on. It's right on the edge of the box too, although Krancjar normally takes these and he's injured...
    • 13' Butt comes forward and knocks it towards Martins but the pass is too wide... he gets on to it but has to go back away from goal and the chance is gone. Martins floats it wide for Duff but a dreadful ball goes backwards and the Irishman has to chase it back towards halfway.
    • 12' The crowd let out an "oooh" after Viduka and Martins almost combine in the box but Distin and Hreidarsson get it away. The way Toon are set up with three strikers favours a longer, higher ball but - Johnson aside - Pompey have a lot more height at the back.
    • 11' Toon come forward again, a poor ball by Butt but Johnson slips and almost lets Duff in but the full-back recovers to put it out for a throw.
    • 9' Jose Enrique plays it down the left but with way too much power and it sails out for a goal kick with Duff chasing into what was a lot of space in the end.
    • 8' Martins chases a long one down, the crowd get excited but Johnson is there to clear.
    • 7' The start to this match is typified by Bassong who, after getting the ball in a good position just past halfway, surges forward and lumps an aimless ball out of play when he had plenty of midfield support and three strikers across the frontline to aim for.
    • 5' Not the most inspiring start, perhaps understandably given what's at stake and the pressure Newcastle in particular are under. Pretty scrappy and no passing moves as of yet.

    • 2' A nervous start here. Pompey are sitting back cautiously as they don't have to win at all, just avoid defeat, whereas their hosts really must get all three points.

Joey Barton is back after a spell out injured and is on the bench.
    • - POMPEY TEAM NEWS: Niko Kranjcar is out for the rest of the season with an ankle problem while Papa Bouba Diop and Younes Kaboul are also injured. Dave Nugent should continue up front alongside Peter Crouch.
    • - TOON TEAM NEWS: Steven Taylor is a big doubt while Jose Enrique could return from injury. Joey Barton, Xisco and Nacho are all out for the hosts, who have 30 points.
    • - It's a relegation six-pointer between Newcastle and Portsmouth, although Pompey have pulled themselves six points clear of the drop zone in recent weeks and can effectively secure safety if they win tonight. Second-bottom Newcastle, however, are in real trouble and a defeat or even failure to win at St James' Park would put them even deeper in the proverbial toilet.
