    West Brom humble Sunderland

Sunderland sank to a 3-0 defeat against rock-bottom West Bromwich Albion to put themselves firmly back into the relegation dogfight. More

    • 90' It's all over! West Brom win 3-0. It's still way too little, too late for the hosts, but the result certainly puts Sunderland back in the brown stuff! Thanks for joining me. Next up it's Man U-Spurs at half past five.
    • 90' Three minutes of added time to come. That just extends the Black Cats' misery.
    • 89' Cisse drives the ball across the West Brom box from the right but Carson collects. It's all over for Sunderland.
    • 87' GOAL!! Menseguez scores! The sub controlled and shot neatly past Fulop from just inside the box!
    • 86' Bardsley is booked for a lunge at Koren as West Brom attacked on the left. The Sunderland man is a picture of frustration.
    • 85' Healy is on...
    • 83' Fotune cuts in from the left and beats two or three Sunderland players before dragging a shot into the side-netting at the near post. That was almost three!
    • 81' Cisse is caught offside as Sunderland try to launch an attack. The Frenchman has been really poor today. David Healy is warming up on the sidelines.
    • 79' Mulumbu almost puts Fortune through on goal, but Ferdinand does really well to clear.
    • 76' Fulop collects a Mensequez cross from the right.
    • 75' Mensequez drills a shot at goal. It rebounds to Brunt, who blazes over. West Brom look the more likely to get the next goal.
    • 74' The cross is cleared and Sunderland break...the ball is played on by Jones to Cisse, but the striker is just beaten to the ball by Olsson, who shepherds the ball back to his keeper.
    • 73' Collins gives a free-kick away on the right wing for a petulant foul.
    • 72' Simpson latches on to the ball in the area, but the West Brom striker's touch is too heavy and the ball goes through to Sunderland goalie Fulop.
    • 71' West Brom are finding it easy to pass the ball around a demoralised Sunderland side. Koren has bags of space to cross from the right - but a Sunderland shirt gets there first and clears.
    • 69' Koren is brought down on the edge of the box by Bardsley, but the ref waves play on.
    • 67' He's OK to carry on.
    • 66' Anton Ferdinand is receiving treatment after falling badly in a challenge for a high ball. It doesn't look good.
    • 64' SO CLOSE FOR SUNDERLAND!! The corner is cleared to the Whitehead on the edge of the box. He drives the ball goalwards and Cisse somehow deflects the ball over from five yards out! He had to score!
    • 63' Sunderland force a corner on the right. West Brom make their third change. Mensequez comes on for Dorrans in midfield.
    • 61' My word, this is an absolutely shocking scoreline for Sunderland fans.
    • 60' GOAL!! West Brom make it 2-0! Fortune did really well down the right wing to slow the play down then pick out Chris Brunt as the midfielder burst into the box - and Brunt slid the ball into the back of the net!
    • 58' Richardson picks out Collins with a curling left-footed cross, but the defender heads over the bar. Better delivery from the midfielder there though.
    • 57' Sunderland win a free-kick 25 yards from goal wide on the left. A good opportunity this.
    • 54' Sunderland are now making another change. It's Malbranque who's coming on for Edwards.
    • 52' Sunderland make a change. A tired-looking Andy Reid is replaced by Dean Whitehead.
    • 50' But Sunderland again waste a set-piece opportunity. The final delivery has been poor from the Black Cats.
    • 49' Dorrans fouls Jones 40 yards from the West Brom goal on the left, giving the visitors a chance to pack the box and get the ball in there.
    • 48' Jones challenges for the ball inside the West Brom box, but can only put the ball behind for a goal-kick to the hosts.
    • 47' Cisse races on to a long ball forward - but Carson sprints off his line and beats the striker to the ball and clears.
    • 46' The second half is under way. A vital 45 minutes coming up for Sunderland. Martis is on for Meite in defence and I'm not quite sure about the other change.
    • - The teams are out for the second-half. And bizarrely, given that they're winning for once, West Brom are making a double change at the break. Martis is on for Meite in defence and Mulumbu in on too - I think it's Greening who's gone off.
    • - Maybe Sunderland will score once they realise that this result is dragging them back down into the relegation fight. If you can't beat West Brom, do you deserve to stay up?
    • - A quick shout out to those making comments on this commentary. The prize for poshest-sounding comment goes to 'JockStuffer' who says: 'I say, Blackcats - pleas (sic) put the football in the back of the net - that would be lovely!!!'
    • - Join me in 15 minutes for the exciting second instalment!
    • 45' Ref Mark Halsey parps his whistle to bring the half to an end. This was meant to be a banker for Sunderland, but it doesn't look that way now.
    • 45' Greening curls the free-kick over all his team-mates and over the crossbar. Goal-kick to Sunderland - what a waste from the Baggies skipper.
    • 45' Bardsley brings down Greening on the left to give West Brom a free-kick in one of those 'better than a corner' postions five yards from the Sunderland box near the byline.
    • 44' Greening's cross results in some pinball inside the Sunderland box, but eventually it's hacked clear.
    • 44' Anton Ferdinand heads it behind for another corner on the left.
    • 43' West Brom force a corner on the right.
    • 41' Sunderland look to respond immediately. They attack down the left and set up Richardson on the edge of the box. But the midfielder shoots straight at Carson in the West Brom goal.
    • 40' GOAL!! West Brom go ahead! Greening's corner fell for Jonas Olsson at the far post, and the defender steered the ball firmly past Fulop with his left-foot!
    • 39' Brunt forces a corner for West Brom on the left.
    • 38' Cisse feeds Richardson in the West Brom box, but the play's pulled back for a foul by the Frenchman.
    • 37' Brunt works a yard of space on the edge of the Sunderland box and shoots two yards over. Better effort there from the Ulsterman. He looks like a Premier League-class player, so expect another club to snaffle him up in the close season.
    • 35' Sunderland try a short-corner routine but when the cross finally does come it flies straight into touch.
    • 34' Good save Carson! The West Brom keeper palms a swerving long-range effort from Richardson behind for a corner. Great effort by the Sunderland midfielder from 25 yards out too.
    • 31' Chubby maestro Andy Reid is freed in all sorts of space down the left. But he passes to a West Brom player rather than crossing the ball. Bad decision.
    • 29' Interesting to see Edwards keeping Malbranque out of the Sunderland team lately. Well, mildly interesting...
    • 28' Reid does well down the left to beat his man and dig out a cross. Carson palms the ball on to the head of Carlos Edwards - but the Sunderland winger can only head over.
    • 27' The delivery is woeful though. It goes straight out for a goal-kick.
    • 26' Tainio wins a free-kick 40 yards from the West Brom goal in the middle of the pitch. This is a chance to get the big men in the box.
    • 25' Brunt shoots low and hard from the edge of the box. It takes a deflection on its way through to goal but Fulop makes the save. He could have been fooled by the deflection there - good keeping.
    • 22' One man who does look like he knows what he's doing is Andy Reid. He teases in a great cross from the left towards Cisse, but the Baggies do well to clear.
    • 20' Well it's not been a classic so far. But perhaps it's a classic of its type - both sides look nervous and not quite sure what to do, like two 17-year-olds trying to pull in a nightclub.
    • 19' Collins drives in a low cross from the left, but it's cleared easily enough.
    • 17' West Brom play some nice little triangles in the middle of the park then tee up Zuiverloon - who shoots high and wide from the edge of the box on the right. Typically cute approach play from the Baggies - and typically little end-product too.
    • 14' Cisse wins the ball in the West Brom half and runs at the Baggies backline, but he stumbles on the ball and loses possession. Was Cisse really once one of the most promising players in Europe? It's hard to believe these days.
    • 12' The ball falls nicely to Koren in the Sunderland box, but his snap-shot is blocked clear.
    • 11' Ricky Sbragia is looking thoroughly miserable in the dugout. Can't blame him really - he might well be sacked even if he keeps the Black Cats up.
    • 10' Brunt delivers a deep cross from the right... but no one can get near it and it goes out for a Sunderland goal kick.
    • 8' West Brom attack down the right. Bardsley heads behind for a corner. But Brunt's cross fails to beat the first man at the near post. Poor.
    • 6' Reid whips in a cross from the left that Cisse can only edge well wide. Decent build up play by the visitors though.
    • 5' I suppose I should mention Sunderland's team news too... Gordon is left out of the squad completely, presumably because of injury, so Fulop returns in goal. And Richardson is in for Leadbitter in midfield.
    • 4' Richardson shoots from the edge of the West Brom area - but the Sunderland man's shot goes about 40 yards high and wide. Shocker.
    • 3' Brunt whips in a cross from the free-kick - but it beats eveyone and goes for a goalkick. Brunt's turned into a goal machine lately - well, by West Brom standards anyway. Can he continue that today?
    • 2' West Brom win an early free-kick 35 yards out.
    • 1' We're up and running at the Hawthorns...
    • - West Brom team news: Simpson comes in for Morrison, who's injured, otherwise it's the same side who lost to Man Ciy last Sunday.
    • - The teams are out. It's a sunny day in Birmingham. We're almost ready to go.
    • - Barring a number of miracles West Brom are already done for, but for Sunderland this is a biggie. We're five minutes from kick-off at The Hawthorns.
