    Giggs magic sends United top

Ryan Giggs rolled back the years to send Manchester United top of the Premier League, scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win at West Ham. More

  • Live Commentary

    Time:90'
    • West Ham
    • Manchester United
    • 90+3' There's the final whistle! Manchester United have won 1-0 to move two points clear of Liverpool.
    • 90+1' Three minutes of stoppage time will be played.
    • 90' Ronaldo wins a free-kick but blasts it into the top of the wall.
    • 88' Ronaldo is tripped by Neill just inside the West Ham box but referee Dowd says play on!
    • 87' Valon Behrami comes off and Diego Tristan gets a brief run-out.
    • 87' More applause for Tevez as he comes off the field and Park replaces him.
    • 86' Berbatov! He tracks all the way back to left back, intercepts and chips a reverse pass inside to Carrick to turn defence into attack. Brilliant.
    • 84' West Ham have plenty forward, but another misplaces pass by Savio sees the move fizzle out.
    • 82' Savio completely overhits a ball down the channel and United have a goal kick. It's going to take some extra quality to breach the visitors' back line in the final stages - and that wasn't it.
    • 80' Giggs puts in a good defensive shift to thwart Behrami, and then Tevez fights off two men to win a foul, much to the displeasure of the Upton Park faithful.
    • 78' West Ham are chasing shadows as United are happy to knock the ball around the back four. It almost backfires though as a Ferdinand backpass is a risky one, but Van der Sar clears just before Di Michele lunges in.
    • 74' Now Berbatov is limping around aft6er a heavy challenge. He looks OK, but is wearing that familiar hangdog expression of his.
    • 71' Giggs looks to be tiring as he struggles to track back, and Ji-Sung Park is getting ready to replace the 35-year-old.
    • 69' Noble crosses low from the right for Cole, whose effort is deflected behind by Ferdinand! The corner is cleared.
    • 67' COLE!! He gets a shot away despite the three red shirts around him, but it fades wide off the outside of his boot.
    • 65' West Ham win a corner that Noble curls in... headed clear. That goal was Ryan Giggs's 97th in the Premier League..
    • 64' Brilliant work by Scholes and Giggs - the two golden oldies give United the lead.
    • 62' GOAL!!! Ryan Giggs rolls back the years with a brilliant goal! He controls Scholes's perfect crossfield ball, cuts inside from the left past two flailing challenges and sends a right-foot shot low into the right corner of the net!
    • 60' Well, eventually Vidic is booked - although it is not clear whether for the foul or something he said. The West Ham free-kick comes to nothing.
    • 59' The West Ham fans feel Vidic should also get a booking after grabbing several handfuls of Carlton Cole's shirt, but it is just a free-kick.
    • 58' Neill shoves Ronaldo over as the winger takes the ball around him, and referee Phil Dowd shows the first yekkiw card of the afternoon.
    • 56' Scott Parker attempts a real Roy of the Rovers strike, but sends it about 20 yards wide. Not one to show the grandkids.
    • 53' It is the same formula as the first half, really. Plenty of possession and territory for the visitors but very few genuine chances - if any.
    • 51' Giggs finds the head of Vidic, the ball loops out and it goes behind for a second corner, which is wasted.
    • 50' Ronaldo's long-range shot deflects behind off Parker and that is a corner for Manchester United.
    • 49' Lucas Neill!! Bends a left-foot shot from the edge of the box and again Van der Sar is called upon to make a decent save!
    • 47' West Ham win a disputed corner that Noble drives in. Van der Sar fumbles it, but again Cole is adjudged to have fouled the keeper.
    • 46' The second half is under way with neither manager seeing fit to make any changes.
    • 45+1' The end of an interesting, if not exciting, first half. No goals at Upton Park.
    • 45' Jose Mourinho is in the crowd - he has come to run the rule over Manchester United, whom his Inter side play in the Champions League last 16.
    • 44' Van der Sar cannot hold it, although the replay shows exactly why - Cole punched it out of his hands. Free-kick United.
    • 43' Parker wins a corner for West Ham, their second to the visitors' eight, and up come Upson and Danny Collins.
    • 40' Ronaldo whacks a optimistic low cross from the right looking for Tevez but the Argentinian cannot reach it and the ball goes out for a goal-kick.
    • 39' Upton Park is a real cauldron of noise, although it must be said the action in the pitch is not really a match for the supporters at the moment.
    • 37' This is developinginto a real midfield battle - not much space or time on the ball for either side.
    • 34' You can see how grittily West Ham are playing - and if Gianfranco Zola and Steve Clarke's coaching styles are anything like the way they used to play, the Scot deserves a lot of credit..
    • 32' Now Carrick lets fly from range but Matthew Upson charges it down bravely.
    • 30' WHAT A SAVE BY GREEN!! Giggs plays a square free-kick for Scholes to hit first-time.. he drags it wide but Ronaldo sticks out a boot and redirects it towards the top corner, only for Green to palm it away. Great work.
    • 28' Scholes smashes a long-range effort that takes a slight touch off a defender and goes out for a corner... there is a foul in the box and West Ham have a free-kick.
    • 26' Real chance for Jack Collison! West Ham work it into the box for him, but he passes up a shooting chance and eventually Ferdinand scrambles the ball away!
    • 25' United break with Berbatov and Ronaldo, who plays a low ball into the box for Tevez... Green clears but whacks the ball into Tevez and West Ham only just survive.
    • 23' There is a tremendous noise around Upton Park as the Hammers go forward. They are very much in this game.
    • 21' Berbatov has the ball in the net but play has already stopped for a foul in the West Ham box and the Bulgarian's celebrations are cut short.
    • 19' Berbatov tees the ball up for himself and smashes the ball goalwards, but it cannons back off a defender.
    • 17' A long spell of possession for the visitors, who are looking to take the sting out of the West Ham attack.
    • 15' Lucas Neill flies in late on Ronaldo - sensible refereeing by Phil Dowd. He just gives the Aussie a warning instead of reaching for the yellow card.
    • 13' Carlton Cole races through the right channel with Rio Ferdiand hanging off him.. he tries an audacious chip and Van der Sar makes a fine save!
    • 12' Lucas Neill!! A corner comes out to the right-back, who hits a powerful volley straight at Van der Sar and the Dutchman gathers it at the second attempt.
    • 11' Vidic goes through the back of Cole, and they 'inadvertently' runs into him on his way back into the United half, scuppering West Ham's chances of taking it quickly.
    • 10' Ronaldo is operating almost exclusively down the left in these early minutes, having a real go at Valon Behrami and Lucas Neill.
    • 8' Ronaldo beats two men down the left flank and Collins deflects his cross for a corner.
    • 7' It has been almost unbroken possession for the visitors early on and Parker appears to fell Berbatov illegally, but referee Phil Dowd says play on!
    • 5' Scholes picks out Giggs at the far post who attempts a volley and slices it wildly into the crowd.
    • 4' United are playing some very pretty stuff - a bit Arsenal-esque.
    • 3' Manchester United have not conceded in the Premier League since 1974. Well, 12 games, actually.
    • 1' Game on! West Ham kick off playing from right to left as we see it, wearing their famous claret and blue. United are in white shirts and blue shorts.
    • - Carlos Tevez gets a great reception from the Hammers fans - the other United players less so. And we are ready to go!
    • - West Ham are unchanged for a fourth league game in a row - Robert Green has recovered from illness. Rafael da Silva returns at right-back for United, while veterans Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes both start. Wayne Rooney is not fit enough to play any part following his injury. Gary Neville is unwell.

The only way it goes their way is when they dive on the floor near the end of the game when they struggle to win and claim pens against the likes of Arsenal and other teams.

  9. haha whos dreaming jusstin ?
Im pretty sure that coaches have been around long enough to know TRUE talent.. and its easy to score with talent like Henry, Xavi, Eto'o, Alves, Puyol, and Iniesta... im sure I could score with those people backing me up, who do they play that even compares to that in the so called Spanish league? Go to the real leauge and make a name for yourself. (Manchester City looks to have enough $$$)

And to liverpool... lucky? how can you say that its luck? liverpool BAIRLY Beat Chelsea and got "lucky" id watch what you say for it takes more than luck to be on top of the table with a game down.

Thats why out of the whole world's national captains and managers ronaldo got more votes as the worlds best player than messi? I think its you thats dreaming.
You better progress in the champions league, I'm looking forward to United and Barca colliding again :) Maybe Barca will actually get a goal this time round haha ;)

I don't see you getting as many injuries as us and still racking up the wins and record breaking clean sheets so go cry in a corner to that justin timberlake song cry me a river. Also saying about referees on our side? Thats just excuses, i don't see ronaldo getting the penalty he could have got when Lucas Neill tripped him up in the box. Or Vidic getting away with a warning or having a successful appeal to get away from suspension after receiving a red card. No, he gets sent off in another competition and they suspend him from our game against Inter in the champions league.

by the way....its obvious for our opponent fans to come up with such lame comments. Here in my country we call it LOSERS. Man U didnt have to score more than 1 to get the full 3 points bcoz they r playing with both brains and legs. Liverpool have to struggle against pompey up to the last minute to get the whole 3 points....
