  • Live Commentary

    Time:90'
    • Aston Villa
    • Liverpool
    • 90+4' There's the final whistle. Fernando Torres has won it for Liverpool with his 50th league goal for the club.
    • 90+2' GOAL!!! TORRES WINS IT FOR LIVERPOOL!!! A loose ball fell perfectly into the path of the Liverpool striker, and he dispatched it perfectly into the far corner! First Warnock slipped to lose the ball, then the ball rebounded clear of a melee of players in the centre to set up the Spaniard. Martin O'Neill's expression on the sidelines is one of utmost pain.
    • 90' 4 minutes time to be added.
    • 90' Skrtel beings down Milner, and Villa have a free-kick in an inviting position. It's played into the back post, and Skrtel heads clear, though Villa pump it back in immediately and win themselves another corner...which is again cleared at the near post.
    • 89' Skrtel is on for Johnson as the corner comes in from Gerrard...it falls to Insua on the edge of the area...and he shoots well wide.
    • 88' Agbonlahor works himself some space in the area and digs a shot away...but Reina makes the save at the near post.
    • 86' Johnson appears to have injuired himself tackling Agbonlahor. A worrying moment for Liverpool.
    • 84' Villa's defence is looking reasonably solid, save for leaving Babel unmarked on the edge of the six-yard box a few minutes ago.
    • 81' Insua lines up a shot from 20 yards, it hits Albrighton, and goes out for a corner...taken short...CHANCE FOR BABEL...but he fails to make contact with the header!!! A big chance goes begging!
    • 79' Gerrard looks for the run of Babbel (on in place of the rather anonymous Aquilani), but Cuellar reads the pass.
    • 74' Good spell this for Villa.
    • 73' Penalty shout now goes up for Villa after Insua inadvertantly heads the ball onto his arm...no penalty, says the referee.
    • 71' Milner swings in a corner...CAREW HEADS MILLIMETRES WIDE!!! Martin O'Neill thought that one was in! It couldn't have been any closer.
    • 70' Agbonlahor brushes aside the challenge of Carragher and speeds away...and it requires Reina to make a smart save at his near post!!!
    • 69' Downing swings in a corner for Villa, Reina takes it...BUT DROPS IT...and is a mighty relieved man to gather it back in again!
    • 67' A high-tempo, entertaining game so far, though it must be said defences and 'keepers are prevailing.
    • 63' Free-kick in an inviting position for Liverpool. Aquilani steps up....but that effort's well over the bar.
    • 60' Liverpool on the attack again as it falls for Johnson 25 yards out, he hits one, but it's blocked again, and Villa can clear.
    • 57' Torres tries to sneak in behind Cuellar, and the Spanish defender opts for safety, booting the ball out for a corner which Gerrard takes, overhits, and it's a throw to Villa over the other side.
    • 54' Finally, play restarts, as the Villa fans make their feelings known towards Reina.
    • 52' It's just his left boot! How bizarre!
    • 51' Reina is signalling for a change of footwear. Which begs the question why he didn't change them at half-time. What nonsense. This is creating a delay.
    • 48' Milner wins Villa a corner off Benayoun on the right. Downing with the cross...cleared by the first man.
    • 46' Carew and Agbonlahor get the second half underway for Villa.
    • 45+1' There's the half-time whistle. Aston Villa 0-0 Liverpool.
    • 45' Weak header back to Friedel from Dunne, Torres is onto it, and Friedel just about makes it to the ball before the Spaniard to hack clear.
    • 44' Fine passing move from Liverpool comes to an end now as Gerrard overhits his through ball for Torres.
    • 43' Lucas is now booked, incorrectly, for a challenge on Agbonlahor. In fairness to him, he was trying to pull out of that one.
    • 41' Booking for Dunne after sending Lucas flying with another late tackle. He's treading a thin line at the moment.
    • 38' Liverpool are claiming a foul on Kuyt in the area, and indeed it should have been!!! Dunne went in very late on the Liverpool man there.
    • 36' Torres profits from confusion in the Villa area to send a header goalwards, but he can't get enough power behind it to trouble Friedel.
    • 34' Gerrard has hit two excellent incisive balls through the Villa defence in the last few minutes. The first was just about intercepted by Cuellar, the second picked out the run of Insua on the left touchline, and won Liverpool a throw. His vision and range of passing are superb.
    • 31' Carew shepherds the ball out for a Villa corner. Milner with the cross...Downing arrives in totally unmarked at the back post...and Reina pulls off a superb instinctive save from Downing's rocket-like volley!!! Downing must have thought he'd scored!
    • 29' Reo-Coker picks out the run of Petrov into the area, he controls on his chest and tries a pretty audacious overhead kick, which goes well wide.
    • 28' Clever free-kick routine from Liverpool as they move it wide for Gerrard, and Carew gets in the block. Corner swung in by Gerrard...but it's gone straight out of play.
    • 26' Benayoun cuts inside and is brought down late by Young. Free-kick to Liverpool on the left flank, 30 yards from goal.
    • 24' Agbonlahor plays it infield for Milner, Lucas tries to read it but takes himself out of the game, it opens up for Milner and he takes a pop at goal with his left...and Reina saves low.
    • 22' Petrov arrows a cross in towards Carew, but the big Norwegian can't do anything with that, and it's out for a goal-kick.
    • 18' Gerrard puts it in again, it falls for Benayoun...but he hits his volley straight at Friedel.
    • 17' Torres infield to Gerrard...he hits it first-time...and forces Friedel into a fingertip save!!! First real effort on goal of the game so far.
    • 16' Aquilani wins a free-kick now 40 yards from goal. Surely too far for a shot? Perhaps not, as Gerrard lines it up. He smashes it into the wall and out for a corner which he will take himself. The corner comes in, up goes Carew, and away goes the ball.
    • 14' Aquilani loses possession to Carew, who strides forward and wins his side a corner. It's Downing to swing it in again...Dunne meets it at the far post, but Reina makes the block.
    • 12' Johnson ventures forward for the first time tonight...and receives a massive cheer from the crowd as he miscontrols the ball off the pitch.
    • 9' Petrov stands it up to the far post looking for Dunne...but the big Irishman is blocked by Insua, throw on to Villa.
    • 8' Milner gets in behind Insua, and wins a free-kick off the Argentinian.
    • 7' Gerrard's initial cross comes back to him and he gets another chance to swing in a decent cross, but it's headed clear by a Villa defender whose identity is pretty well obscured by the snow.
    • 6' Young gives the ball away cheaply, Benayoun picks it up and looks to feed Torres, and Young gets back to put it out for a corner.
    • 4' A little robin has decided to rest just on the halfway line. He won't want to stay there too long.
    • 3' Agbonlahor wins a free-kick on the right wing. Petrov plays it short and Downing has a chance to shoot...but his shot is charged down.
    • 2' Villa on the front foot immediately as they win a corner off Insua. Downing swings it in, but Kuyt heads clear at the back post.
    • 1' Liverpool get the first half underway.
    • 19:40 Well, it's an absolute blizzard at Villa Park. As predicted the sleet has turned to snow. As ever, Jamie Carragher has opted for a short-sleeved shirt. Rather him than me.
    • - Here are the teams. Wiltshire official Lee Probert is the man in the middle for this one.
    • - Aston Villa: Friedel, Luke Young, Cuellar, Dunne, Warnock, Reo-Coker, Milner, Petrov, Downing, Agbonlahor, Carew. Subs: Guzan, Sidwell, Albrighton, Delfouneso, Delph, Beye, Collins
    • - Liverpool: Reina, Johnson, Carragher, Agger, Insua, Kuyt, Lucas, Aquilani, Benayoun, Gerrard, Torres. Subs: Cavalieri, Aurelio, Kyrgiakos, Babel, Ngog, Spearing, Skrtel
    • - John Carew has scored three goals in his last four Premier League games at Villa Park.
    • - Steven Gerrard has scored nine Premier League goals against Aston Villa - more than against any other opponent.
    • - Martin O'Neill's men have lost just one of their last 13 Premier League matches at Villa Park. Aston Villa have not won three Premier League matches in a row on home soil since Autumn 2007.
    • - Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 11 league games at Villa Park, but they have won just one of their last six Premier League away matches.
    • - Villa's win at Anfield earlier this season ended a run of 15 without a victory against the Merseysiders in the Premier League. They have not done the league double over Liverpool since 1992-93.
    • - Despite losing 3-0 at Arsenal on Sunday, Villa can move level on points with the third-placed Gunners if they beat eighth-placed Liverpool this evening. Premier League table
