    Time:90'
    • Aston Villa
    • Wolverhampton Wanderers
    • 90+4' The final whistle blows, and it's a point that Wolves would have taken before the game, but under the circumstances they will perhaps feel a little disappointed they couldn't hang on for all three.
    • 90+1' Milner bundles his way down the left. Great display of determination and drive from the midfielder.
    • 90' Four minutes of added time are signalled.
    • 89' Wolves substitution: Chris Iwelumo replaces Matt Jarvis.
    • 88' Warnock makes a suicidal backpass to Friedel and the keeper has to react quickly to clear the danger miliseconds before Doyle pounces.
    • 87' Albrighton fires a cross over the Wolves bar. Not an impressive cameo from the substitute.
    • 86' Wolves are starting to show some more ambition now, but Villa are the ones in control.
    • 84' That's Carew's seventh goal in his last six games.
    • 82' GOAL!! Heskey turns and holds the ball up in the Wolves box and lays it off to Sidwell. The substitute strikes low and Carew - who was level when Sidwell struck - gets a telling touch to steer the ball past Hahnemann and level it for Villa!
    • 82' Mancienne surges forward with the ball and lines up a strike, but the low shot is an easy collect for Friedel.
    • 80' Young whips the ball in and Carew tries to guide it with the back of his head, but over the bar it goes.
    • 79' Albrightonwastes a promising break for Villa with a ball into no one in the midfield.
    • 77' Carew heads wide from another Milner cross.
    • 77' Villa substitution: Steve Sidwell replaces Stewart Downing.
    • 76' Villa fail to make use of the free-kick from the left wing. They are having no joy in the air despite the presence of Carew and Heskey up front.
    • 75' Ashley Young skips down the left and Zubar sends him flying! The referee whips out his yellow card in no time.
    • 72' Villa substitution: Marc Albrighton replaces Richard Dunne.
    • 71' another ball into the Wolves box causes a scramble on the goal-line and Henry somehow denies Heskey from close range! The Wolves skipper has made some vital blocks today.
    • 70' Milner's cross meets the head of Heskey, but Carew can't get to the nod-down before Hahnemann. Nice to see that Heskey is still on the field after all.
    • 68' Once again, Wolves fail to make a corner work for them.
    • 67' Jones swings in a devilish ball that yields a Wolves corner.
    • 67' Collins dives around and fouls. He gets a quick word from the referee, but nothing more.
    • 66' Carew wins a header and it tees up nicely for him to volley, but he completely misses the ball!
    • 65' Milner digs out a cross for Young, but it's over his head.
    • 64' Wolves substitution: Michael Mancienne replaces Stephen Ward. McCarthy makes another reshuffle.
    • 63' Are Villa headed for their first league defeat of 2010?
    • 62' Milner curls an inviting cross to Carew, but the header is a relatively easy catch for Hahemann. He needed to test the keeper from there.
    • 61' Wolves are doing a good job of denying Villa any chances since taking the lead, but the home side are beginning to ask questions of their defence now.
    • 60' Milner sneds a free-kick towards Dunne but the Irishman can't get a header on goal.
    • 59' Hahnemann punches it clear, but Villa keep the pressure on.
    • 58' Young wins another corner, this time off Craddock.
    • 57' Downing tries to get past Elokobi but the defender makes the tackle for another Villa corner. Cuellar gets his head to the ball but can only glance it off target.
    • 56' Hahnemann slides in to grab a loose ball in the box and almost presents it at the feet of Carew. The American recovers in time to hold on to it.
    • 54' Dunne reads the game well to intercept a pass infield, but he miscontrols as he goes on a run down the wing.
    • 53' Young goes for goal rom a tight angle. It's well-struck but hits to roof of the net.
    • 52' Jarvis fouls Young on the wing. Villa send plenty forward for the delivery.
    • 52' Agbnalhor looks pretty cheesed off as he looks on from one of the boxes. Nigel Reo-Coker and Wilfred Bouma have similarly glum expressions.
    • 51' The corner is fired towards the near post and Dunne heads wide.
    • 50' Confident start to the half from Wolves, with plenty of passes strung together in midfield. Downing sprints down the left and Zubar slides in to concede the corner.
    • 48' Wolves win their fourth corner of the match, but can't work a chance from the set piece.
    • 47' It looks as though Elokobi will slot in at left-back in order to try and deal with Ashley Young, who has been Villa's most dangerous player so far.
    • 46' The second half is underway!
    • HT Wolves substitution: George Elokobi replaces Adlene Guedioura.
    • 45+3' The half-time whistle goes, and Martin O'Neill has some work to do at the break.
    • 45+2' Downing heads back across goal and Berra makes a reflex clearance to concede a corner. The initial ball is lcleared but Villa launch it back in and Cuellar blazes a strike over the bar.
    • 45+1' There will be two minutes of added time.
    • 45' Milner is obstructed by Henry. No booking, but Villa have a useful free-kick as half-time approaches.
    • 44' Karl Henry gifts possession to Villa inside the Wolves box, but the visitors manage to scramble clear.
    • 43' Petrov puts in another 'solid' tackle, this time on Doyle, and again he escpaes a second yellow. He can't keep this up for much longer.
    • 42' Guedioura takes Petrov's legs clean out from under him! The Frenchman takes the yellow, perhaps relieved that it's not a red!
    • 41' Young spots Downing's late run to the far post and picks him out with an inviting crross... Downing heads it into the ground and it bounces up and over the bar!
    • 38' GOAL!! Heskey loses the ball to Jones in midfield and Wolves push forward. Jarvis pulls a ball back from the byline and Milner turns it past Friedel as he runs back to deny Jones the shot!

    • 35' Zubar returns to the action.
    • 34' Stiliyan Petrov brings Zubar down in the Wolves box. The defender limps away for treatment but the Villa skipper escapes a second booking. He's treading on thin ice now.

    • 30' Foley gets a boot int he face as Carew stretches to control the ball. Wolves have a free-kick, but no more action is taken.
    • 28' Carew tries to flick on afree-kick from deep but it goes out of play for a goal kick.
    • 27' We've just passed the midway point of the half, and Villa have paid for not pressing home their early advantage.
    • 25' Dunne comes off worse after he and Doyle clash heads. The Villa defender got it right in the kisser from his international team-mate.
    • 24' That's Craddock's fifth of the season! Not sure how intentional Zubar's lay-off to him was, but Wolves won't care.
    • 23' GOAL!! Wolves send in a free-kick from deep and Zubar knocks it back to Craddock, who beats Friedel to level!
    • 23' Doyle turns to evade Petrov and gets a nasty kick in the back of the leg. The Bulgarian is rightly booked.
    • 22' Jones sends in a corner for Wolves that goes over Doyle's head, but referee Clattenburg has already blown his whistle for an infringement.
    • 20' Dunne and Warnock combine well to play Villa out of danger.
    • 17' That's John Carew's fifth league strike of the season. Wolves not only let a great scoring chance slip away, but then conceded such an elementary goal as a result.
    • 16' GOAL!! Collins roams forward and loses the ball. Wolves break and pour men forward but they run out of ideas and it's Villa's turn to break. Young has the beating of Zubar and drills a low cross in for Carew who has the simplest task to steer home from close range for the opener!
    • 15' Milner releases Young with a ball down the channel. The cross is plucked out of the air by the keeper as Carew was ready to head.
    • 14' Young sends in a corner that goes over the head of Collins. Downing's second ball is not cleared and Villa have a throw. Carew gets the flick-on but Hahnemann is off his line to claim it.
    • 12' Jarvis swings the corner to the far post for Berra, who can't guide his header goalwards.
    • 11' Great end-to-end spell as Jarvis's cross is blocked behind for a corner.
    • 10' Ashley Young and then Carew are both denied by great last-ditch tackles in the Wolves box!
    • 9' The corner comes back to Guedioura on the edge of the box and the Frenchman strikes... the shot flies wide of the post!
    • 9' Cuellar scythes down Jarvis on the edge of the box, but Wolves will have to make do with a corner.
    • 8' Downing bursts into the box from the left but Hahnemann blocks his shot at the near post!
    • 7' Fabio Capello is in the crowd. Plenty of English players to get a look at here.
    • 6' Collins sends a long ball upfield that lands at the feetof Hahenmann. So much for that neat football on the deck.
    • 4' Cuellar squares a ball across to Carew, who executes a swift turn and drills a low shot across goal that goes wide! Warnock slides in at the far post but just can't get there in time.
    • 3' Ward shields the ball out for a goal kick. The pitch is in great nick and it's raining, so hopefully there'll be plenty of stuff played on the deck.
    • 3' Berra has to hack the ball clear into the crowd as Villa build the pressure.
    • 2' Henry trips Petrov in the centre circle. Villa take the free-kick quickly as they start the match at a high tempo.
    • 1' The match is underway!
    • - The players are out on the pitch. We're almost ready...
    • - This is the 100th league meeting between these two sides. Of the previous 99, Villa have won 43 and Wolves 33.
    • - Good news for Wolves fans - defender Roland Zubar is relaxed ahead of a derby on a day in which they could move closer to the bottom three: "Villa will be expected to win because they are at home and so there won't be any pressure on us. We go to Villa Park and try and do the same things - stay strong on the pitch and stay in the game."
    • - Good news for Villa fans - the club are to hold talks with midfielder James Milner in the summer regarding a new contract.
    • - Kevin Doyle is Wolves' top scorer this term, with six league goals to his name. The only other Wolves player to have scored more than two goals is centre-back Jody Craddock, who has four.
    • - Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor does not even make the bench today as he is recovering from a groin strain. Today's front pairing of Carew and Heskey have scored seven league goals between them this season. Agbonlahor has 11 on his own.
    • - So, Villa could go level on points with fourth-placed Tottenham if they win - at least until Spurs play at Stoke later this afternoon. Just two league wins so far in 2010 for Wolves has them one place and three points above the relegation zone, although 18th-placed Burnley have a game in hand. Premier League table
    • - The teams are in. Refereeing this Midlands derby is the ever-popular Mark Clattenburg.
    • - Aston Villa: Friedel, Cuellar, Collins, Dunne, Warnock, Ashley Young, Milner, Petrov, Downing, Carew, Heskey. Subs: Guzan, Luke Young, Sidwell, Albrighton, Delfouneso, Beye, Clark.

    • - Wolves have scored one goal or fewer in 22 of their 29 league games this season.
    • - Villa have three points fewer than they did after 28 games last season.
    • - Five of Villa's last eight league games have ended as draws.
    • - James Milner's last three Premier League goals have been from outside the penalty area.
    • - Wolves have the worst shooting accuracy in the top flight, hitting the target with just 37 per cent of their shots.
    • - Wolves have failed to score in seven of their last 11 Premier League matches.
    • - Aston Villa have lost just one of their last 13 Premier League matches at Villa Park. But Villa have won only one of the last five on their home turf.
    • - Wolves have kept just one clean sheet in their last 13 Premier League away matches.
    • - Aston Villa are unbeaten in their last 15 matches against Wolves in all competitions (12 wins three draws), dating back to 1980.
  • Summary

    • 88' Warnock makes a suicidal backpass to Friedel and the keeper has to react quickly to clear the danger miliseconds before Doyle pounces.
    • 82' GOAL!! Heskey turns and holds the ball up in the Wolves box and lays it off to Sidwell. The substitute strikes low and Carew - who was level when Sidwell struck - gets a telling touch to steer the ball past Hahnemann and level it for Villa!

  1. Why is MON so insistant on playing Heskey? He is more of a spectator than a striker when there are players with proven goal-scorring ability sitting on the bench. If MON had taken Heskey off and brought Delfouneso on at half time Villa would probably have taken all 3 points from Wolves.

  3. comment 112 is right on mon isnt using his squad.

dreadful villa very lucky to get a point - even the defense is crumbling.

mon has made a big mistake with downing - an expensive flop - at least he was subbed.

why did he keep petrov on after a yellow and several warnings - petrov has no talent.

we wont finish seventh even at this rate.

  4. comment 112 right on - mon isnt using his squad.

    cuellar wasted at right back.

dreadful villa very lucky to get a point - even the defense is crumbling.

mon has made a big mistake with downing - an expensive flop - at least he was subbed.

why did he keep petrov on after a yellow and several warnings - petrov has no talent.

we wont finish seventh even at this rate.

  5. Must say I thought Villa would of caught Spurs by now... Not the end of the season thought...

    COYS!

  6. today was a derby match too don't forget and we all know anything can happen in derbies....
give wolves credit too because they played very well and it wouldn't be the 1st time they've suprised a supposedly bigger team this season.
like i say- there's no rubbish teams in the premier league

From Stench, on Sun 21 Mar 7:18
  7. chinnock you are wrong, chelsea were already up the top end of the table before abramovich came. our squad is good enough to beat anyone on our day, and you're saying we can't last the season before the season has even finished!!! if we don't finish 4th this season then come and moan, cry , sulk whatever but not before then because what you're actually doing by turning against the team is contributing to our own downfall like in past seasons. i'm sorry but for a long time there's been a very vocal minority of fickle villa fans holding us back and causing unrest amongst the team and fans and it's this that needs to change, not the management or direction of the club.
o'neill knew when he came here that it would take years (not weeks or months) to build a successful squad and more importantly a squad that continue its success for years to come. mon and randy lerner have really built this club up from the bottom and put foundations in place that will see us well in years to come (in comparison tro many other premier league teams), so just give him the backing to continue the success he's had so far. not once have we went backwards under o'neill and it's common knowledge that you have to improve year on year just to be able to stand still in this tough league and i think we've steadily surpassed that.
just look at the supposed lower teams like hull (even they can pay £50k a week wages to certain players) or bolton, sunderland etc who have been known to spend £10m plus on a player nowadays.
this football lark ain't as easy as you think....

From Stench, on Sun 21 Mar 7:14
  8. Stench.....Sorry I do not agree.....I want to see Villa succeed, but with current squad there is no chance. There is no quality in depth and that comes from spending money (like it or not). Chelsea were a second rate team only a few years ago until they had huge investment. Villa need to get big name players into the first team and need a squad that can last a full season. Currently they are only able to perform for about 70% of the season. We have blown the games in hand we had against much weaker opponents. If we really want to contend for top spots, we need a big cash injection.

From briancpchinnock, on Sun 21 Mar 6:17
  9. Get rid of that Cuellar. Why on earth does O'neill insist on playing him at right back is beyond me.

From Matt, on Sun 21 Mar 6:08
  10. chinnock you havn't got a clue. we are 2 points off 4 th spot!! what don't you understand about that?
this is the toughest league in the world and there are no rubbish teams in it. even chelsea and other big teams have lost to the likes of wigan and wolves this season so it's not all bad. maybe you should wait to see if we actually make the champions league before getting all negative and giving up all hope.
we're playing good football and are in the right hands with MON and randy lerner... it takes time to build a successful football team... just ask alex ferguson (it took him more than 5 years before man utd won anything). what do you want? a billionaire owner who just throws money at everything and sacks the manager after every game we don't win? man city have spent a fortune but as you can see money doesn't bring instant success. no my friend villa are doing things right and if MON stays long enough i truly beleive we win the league under his management. it's nothing to do with lack of ambition, mon has tried to improve us year on year and from where i'm standing he's succeeding. have some patience and stop making the team nervous by turning on them at every given opportunity. the players sense the fickleness of the fans and are on edge all the time because they know that in a heartbeat they can go from hero's to public enemy no.1 in a matter of seconds...

From Stench, on Sun 21 Mar 6:02
  11. Stench....You've got no ambition.....last season was a failure and this season is going the same way. 2nd in a Final is nothing to shout about.....losing 4 points to Stoke & Wolves when your chasing Champions league is also embarassing. We are all behind the team (as have been for 30 years) but we need to step up a gear

From briancpchinnock, on Sun 21 Mar 5:42
  12. FICKLE FÚCKÉRS STOP WRITING US OFF, YOU'RE NOT TRUE FANS IF YOU DON'T GET BEHIND THE TEAM WHEN THEY'RE 2 POINTS OFF 4TH PLACE, IN THE SEMI FINALS OF THE FA CUP AND WERE FINALISTS IN THE CARLING CUP. WE'RE ALSO UNDEFEATED IN 2010 AND HAVE THE BEST DEFENCE IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE.
THE WAY SOME OF YOU SO CALLED FANS GO ON YOU'D THINK WE WERE HAVING A BAD SEASON OR SOMETHING!!!
ALL THE REAL FANS WILL CONTINUE BACKING VILLA TIL THE END AND WE REALISE WE CAN'T WIN EVERY MATCH IN THE SAME WAY AS OTHER TEAMS DON'T.

From Stench, on Sun 21 Mar 5:27
  13. wot did i say to all those who would listen,
Villa will be lucky to finish in the top ten
because MON refuses to use the full squad
in todays modern game you have to use more
than 16 players through out the season,
wake up MON stop playing favourites,
the 1st 11 needs freshening up
L Young, Delphonso, Delph, Sidwell, Albrighton, Beye
must be wandering what they have to do to start a match
