90+4' There's the final whistle, and City are off to a winning start! Mark Hughes slips over as he goes to shake Sam Allardyce's hand, but that cannot wipe the smile off his face!
90+1' GOAL!!! Stephen Ireland puts the result beyond doubt, running on to a Wirhgt-Phillips through ball, executing a feint that leaves Paul Robinson on his backside, and eventually side-footing coolly into the bottom-right corner!
90' Wild tackle by Gallagher on Tevez, sliding in behind and rightly picking up a yellow card!
87' Uncompromising stuff from Dunne, taking out McCarthy and the ball in one lunging tackle. Referee Dean sees nothing wrong with it.
86' Young David Hoilett comes on for El-Hadji Diouf with five minutes left.
84' Richards comes back on and play resumes - McCarthy was booked, we think.
80' McCARTHY!!! He absolutely smashes the free-kick but it whistles a couple of feet over Shay Given's crossbar.
79' Yellow card Micah Richards for a late tackle on Pedersen, and it is a free-kick on the left 30 yards out.
75' Offside against McCarthy in the City box... and a change here as Paul Gallagher replaces Keith Andrews.
70' Weather watch: It's now raining fairly hard.
69' And now it is Robinho who will come off! Tevez gets his first taste of competitive action for City.
67' Carlos Tevez will come on for Craig Bellamy! The Welshman does not look at all happy... and play continues before the change can be made!
65' The teenager Di Santo comes on for Roberts, who will feel he should have scored today.
62' ROBINHO!!! Drills a low, left-footed shot from the edge of the box that Robinson does really well to tip behind, diving full-stretch to his right.
59' ROBERTS!!! Jacobsen finds him unmarked from the right flank, but his header lacks power and is saved by Given.
46' The second half is under way, with no personnel changes from either side.
45' The ball gets away from Adebayor, who jumps into a tackle with studs showing and Diouf stays down! The replay does not look pretty - Adebayor's studs went straight into Diouf's ankle and he was lucky there was no lasting damage.
44' Andrews smashes a shot into a wall of bodies and Rovers want a penalty for handball against Dunne! Referee Dean says it is accidental, and he is right to do so.
38' Robinho has a crack from the left edge of the box... Robinson makes sure and tips it over for a City corner.
37' Roberts cuts inside from the right and skins Bridge... he cuts the ball back and it finds McCARTHY!! Hits his shot straight at GIVEN!
28' McCarthy in the six yard box. He cannot sort his feet out and sends the ball high over the bar! City clinging on!
28' GREAT SAVE SHAY GIVEN!! He dives low to his left to keep out a header from Samba from a corner!
18' ROBERTS! The ball drops for him eight yards out, but he takes it on the half-volley and sidefoots it over.
3' GOAL!!! WHAT A START FOR CITY!!! Emmanuel Adebayor thumps the ball past Robinson after Wright-Phillips centres low from the right. Low into the right corner, no chance goalkeeper!
1' Off we go!! Manchester City kick off the 2009/10 season, playing from right to left in all black. Rovers are in their standard white and blue halves.

Pete H, if you increased YOUR intelligence level pal and actually read my comment properly i wasn't actually having a go a Rovers fans... if you read it again i said "doubt it" meaning the vast majority of negative comments probably come from Utd fans, I am in agreement with you about both sets of fans beoing free to comment but i dont take very kindly to the insult. Hope you never meet me at COMS.

what is the "ig four" rag boy??

all u idiots dream on. u will never compete in the ig four.

Wright-Phillips was the real star of this game.

If city put tevez on the bench he will leave the club! thats why he left united because he wasnt playing enough games!

paulorrell115,
That is such a comment, but ur right at least Rovers don't BUY silver, haha, NICE ONE

Excuse me my suggestion is using all the three sustitute players in minutes 55-75 from 90 minutes couuld be better.Thank you very much.God bless us.

oh..won..........

just look at the talent on the bench!

i've never seen someone that happy for beating rovers. come on, the money is gonna bring you something...

No starting spot for Tevez in the City of Manchester! WOW!!!

.Chris W
this is a city page so can i presume they are all from Rovers fans?
HOW THE HELL CAN THIS BE JUST A CITY PAGE ??
ROVER ARE THE HOME SIDE !! THEY HAVE JUST AS MUCH RIGHT TO BE ON HERE !!
Man alive the intelligence level gets worse

go MAN CITY,and i wish they would be in the top 5 this year

i like the comment that rovers will be in the championship next season... this must come from a city cling on fan....... COME ON YOU ROVERS. and at least we dont have to buy silver..

What meakes me laugh is there are so many negative comment marks from us City supporters on here...this is a city page so can i presume they are all from Rovers fans?... doubt it, its a sad sad mentality, a very British disease, no admiration for any other team winning, knock em down eh...Rovers were actually ok today, yes we rode our luck but it takes guts to win away from home even if sometomes we did play with some mediocraty. Come on City... what a great start.

First game of the season and Rovers are one place above the drop zone and the dingles are in the drop zone. Rovers and Dingles are playing championship next season. You read it here first.
