    • - What a fantastic result for Burnley! And what a nightmare for United... they really looked out of sorts tonight. But it finishes 1-0 to the hosts, who register their first points in the top flight for 33 years!
    • 90'+4 There it is! All over at Turf Moor and Burnley register a famous win over the champions!
    • 91' It's poor though and Burnley clear their lines.... surely that's it now?
    • 90' Corner to United as the game moves into injury time....
    • 87' Rooney centres... it's a dangerous one, but there's no one there to capitalise! Still no joy for United!
    • 85' Oh dear, that's a terrible challenge by Rooney on Mears! And he rightly goes into the book...
    • 81' Fletcher is taken off to rapturous applause... Thompson comes on to replace him...
    • 79' Giggs wins United's 12th corner of the night as the pressure mounts on the Burnley goal... but the United captain is then wrongfooted by Valencia's return on the short corner and the ball goes out!
    • 77' Berbatov and Rooney leave the ball to each other and the ball runs out for a goal kick, much to the delight of the home crowd! It's just not happening for the visitors tonight.
    • 75' Time running out for United to snatch an equaliser, let alone a winner... just 15 minutes remaining...
    • 73' And here's a change for Burnley... Alexander and Paterson are replaced by Gudjonsson and former United player Chris Eagles!
    • 71' United make a third change... Brown off, Neville on.
    • 70' Jensen again comes to Burnley's rescue, this time to deny Giggs after a lovely one-two with Rooney!
    • 69' Foster is brought into action again by a sharp drive by Elliott from 25 yards... the England keeper snaffles it at the second attempt!
    • 67' Park! Great save by Jensen who gets another big hand on the Korean's snap shot! Then the ball appears to hit Bikey's hand as Valencia crosses... but the referee waves play on!
    • 66' Berbatov! Ooh, that's not too far away from the substitute! His curler flies wide of the top corner, although Jensen looks to have it covered...
    • 64' That's a dangerous ball across the face of goal by Paterson! But there's no one there to get on the end of it and the chance goes begging!
    • 63' Time for another United switch as Owen is taken off - the watching Fabio Capello doesn't look impressed, but then again he never does, does he? - and Berbatov comes on in his place.
    • 62' Chance for United! Valencia arrives at the far post to meet an awkwardly bouncing Evra cross but his header goes wide!
    • 60' O'Shea bundles Paterson over by the corner flag... a sign of frustration if there ever was one. Foster does well to claim the resulting free-kick.
    • 59' United make a change now... off goes Anderson and comes Antonio Valencia... that's a positive change for the champions - they certainly need some spark from somewhere!
    • 56' Rooney advances with the ball at his feet... but he goes for goal and fires over the bar, with Jensen not forced to break a sweat.
    • 54' The game's a little flat at the moment and is struggling to come to light again after the fireworks of the first half.
    • 52' Oooh! Blake fires the free-kick low and hard past the wall, but just the wrong side of the post! Burnley are still a threat after the break! Berbatov warming up...
    • 51' Brown upends McCann right on the edge of the United box and Burnley have a free-kick in a very dangerous position!
    • 50' Evra does well to recover a ball at the byline before turning back to Park! The Korean takes a touch, but his eventual shot is well blocked by Mears!
    • 49' Park shows some neat footwork before Anderson spoils it all with a misplaced pass straight out of play...
    • 48' Burnley on the attack again... but Mears's cross from the right hand side sails way over the bar and out for a goal kick.
    • 46' Here we go again! Back underway at Turf Moor! No changes to tell you at the break....
    • 45'+2 There goes the whistle! Fantastic stuff by Burnley! What a great half for the newly promoted side! They head in a goal to the good with the champions struggling to fing any kind of rhythm!
    • 45' Two minutes of added time to be added...
    • 44' JENSEN SAVES IT! Carrick hits it to the Dane's right, but he guesses the right way and gets a big hand to it! What a wasted chance!
    • 43' Big penalty shout for United as Blake upends Evra in the box! And the ref gives it! PENALTY TO UNITED!
    • 42' Bikey slides in to put Rooney's cross behind and United have another corner... but again the champions can't make anything of their position.
    • 41' Great challenge by Fletcher on Anderson! A real bone-cruncher, but entirely fair! The crowd love that one!
    • 39' Blake climbs high above Brown to get his head to a deep cross into the United box... but it loops high into the air and behind for a goal kick.
    • 38' The inevitable chant of 'You'll never play for England' goes up from the home section of the crowd... and once again, they may well be right...
    • 37' OWEN! Oh dear! What a miss from the England wanabee! Brown delivers a great cross right onto his head, but Owen barely makes contact and the ball skims off the top of his head and away to safety!
    • 36' Here comes Giggs again with a trademark surge forward... but he's stopped in his tracks by a trip from goalscorer Blake, who is booked.
    • 35' Mears, back in the English top flight after a brief sojourn in Marseille, plays back to Jensen, hacks downfield to safety as United fail in another attack.
    • 34' But Burnley deal with it admirably... moments later Rooney fires well wide from 30 yards out...
    • 33' Super defending from McCann as he tracks back to foil Giggs's run forward... corner to United anyway...
    • 31' Are Burnley sitting off a little now? You get the feeling if they do, it's only a matter of time before the champions hit back, whereas if they continue to go forward, a second really is a possibility...
    • 30' After that burst of attacking from Burnley, United are only just now starting to enjoy a bit of possession...
    • 29' Oooh! Nearly an exquisite pass from Giggs to Park, who only just fails to get something on the Welshman's cross-field ball...
    • 28' On the other hand, United are beginning to look a bit ragged... a loose pass from Rooney is followed by one from Brown and the champions look rattled!
    • 26' Burnley have got the bit between their teeth tonight... they're chasing everything down and not giving up a single loose ball...
    • 24' United break for the first time for what seems like ages and Rooney fires a sidefooter well wide of the post... that's the first time they've ventured into the hosts' half since the goal went in.
    • 23' 'Burnley are back' is the cry from the home crowd! They're right, you know!
    • 22' More spectacular stuff from Burnley! This time it's Fletcher with an acrobatic scissor kick after another headed clearance by a United player only reaches a claret shirt... Fletcher's effort, by the way, doesn't trouble Foster at all.
    • 21' This will be a real test of character for United now... have they got what it takes to win these kind of games? Just an aside, Paterson has been booked, although it's not entirely clear why.
    • 20' What a hammer blow that is for United! And such a spectacular goal from Blake - Burnley's first in the top flight for 33 years!
    • 19' GOAL! WHAT A GOAL IT IS! ROBBIE BLAKE PUTS BURNLEY INTO THE LEAD WITH A SUPERB VOLLEY! Evra can only half head clear and Blake pounces with a stunning hit past Foster and into the top right hand corner!
    • 18' Real chance for Paterson now! He's put through on goal... he rounds the keeper but Foster stands his ground and repels his effort... Blake can't do anything with the follow up!
    • 17' Lovely stuff from Alexander in the middle of the park as he turns Owen with apparent ease... again a big cheer goes up from the home crowd.
    • 16' Oooh! McCann loses his marker in the United box, but he mistimes his run and the ball goes over his head when perhaps he should have connected. If he had, Foster would have had to be at his best to keep it out!
    • 15' That's good work from Paterson on the left... but his cross is cut out by Brown and the chance goes begging.
    • 14' Rooney tries to skip his way through the entire Burnley defence, but is eventually stopped by Jordan and Bikey completes the clearance.
    • 13' The travelling support are beginning to make themselves heard now - with a rather vulgar anti-Manchester City song!
    • 12' Giggs takes it... Carrick gets on the end of it with a languid standing volley... the ball hits the turf before landing on the top of Jensen's net!
    • 11' Swift attacking play from United now as Carrick links up well with Rooney to force a corner!
    • 10' Fletcher! Oh dear! He mis-hits a volley - albeit a difficult one - at the far post and then scoops a second effort way over the bar! Burnley's first real chance of the game so far...
    • 9' Signs of encouragement now as Paterson gets free on the right... he wins a throw near to the corner flag and the crowd roar their approval!
    • 8' Jensen is forced to come off his line as Owen nearly gets to Giggs's long through ball... the crowd cheer as the Dane hoofs clear.
    • 7' But that's a poor ball from Rooney... straight to Blake, whose long ball forward is headed back to Foster by Brown.
    • 6' Anderson centres, looking for Rooney, but the Brazilian's effort goes over his head and out for a throw.
    • 5' Very strong start to the game by United, but no goal to show for their early domination so far.
    • 4' Owen has the ball in the back of the net! He slots home at the second attempt after Rooney slips him through on goal! But the linesman's flag is up on the far side and it won't count!
    • 3' Owen chests down for Rooney now... he takes a touch before letting fly from 25 yards! Well blocked by Bikey though and the ball pings away to safety.
    • 2' Real chance for Owen after great work on the left by Evra... but the little striker can't connect with the ball as he stabs at it, totally unmarked, at the near post! He puts his head in his hands, and so he should!
    • 2' United are in their black and blue away kit this evening. Burnley, of course, are in their traditional claret and blue.
    • 1' Here we go! Alan Wiley toots on his whistle and we're off!
    • - Here come the teams to a rapturous reception at Turf Moor! It promises to be a special atmosphere in Lancashire tonight!
    • - Apologies for the numbering of the captains on the line-ups below... it's a technical hitch that our techie 'people' (if that's what they are) are looking into. Of course, Ryan Giggs wears number 11, and not 9, as correctly pointed out by astute reader roykeane99. Good work Keano! And we know that Graham Alexander wears 2, not 8, before any Burnley fans get on our case!
    • - And there's a big game in the Championship tonight - Newcastle host Sheffield Wednesday at St James'. Follow live text commentary here!
    • - And there's plenty of Champions League play-off action to enjoy, if that's your thing. Click here to follow live scoring!
    • - Don't forget you can follow all the rest of the evening's Premier League action by clicking here!
    • - For Burnley, Andre Bikey does indeed make his debut, but there is no place for former United player Chris Eagles, who has to settle for a place on the bench.
    • - So, the big news is that Michael Owen starts for United, alongside Wayne Rooney. Jonny Evans is fit to partner Wes Brown in the centre of the Reds' defence, while John O'Shea plays right-back. In midfield, it's all change as Michael Carrick, Anderson, Ryan Giggs and Park Ji-sung all start for the first time this season.
    • - Tonight's referee is Alan Wiley (Staffordshire).
    • - And United: Foster, O'Shea, Jonathan Evans, Brown, Evra, Park, Anderson, Carrick, Giggs, Owen, Rooney. Subs: Kuszczak, Neville, Berbatov, Scholes, Valencia, Gibson, De Laet
    • - The teams are in... here's how Burnley line up: Jensen, Mears, Bikey, Carlisle, Jordan, Blake, McCann, Alexander, Elliott, Steven Fletcher, Paterson. Subs: Penny, Kalvenes, McDonald, Gudjonsson, Thompson, Guerrero, Eagles
    • - Nothing to do with either of these teams, but this afternoon's big news (that Lescott story aside) is that Peter Storrie is heading up a consortium to take over Portsmouth. More here!
    • - Whilst we're waiting, why not take a look at Early Doors's take on the Joleon Lescott transfer saga? Read it here!
    • - More team news as and when we get it!
    • - Burnley have injury problems of their own with skipper Steven Caldwell out due to a groin strain and Michael Duff also missing. But new signing Andre Bikey could debut, along with David Edgar, who missed the weekend's defeat to Stoke through suspension picked up while still a Newcastle player.
    • - United's defensive 'crisis' continues, with Edwin van der Sar, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Gary Neville, Rafael and Jonny Evans all deemed unfit to play tonight. In their place could be Ben Foster, Fabio, Wes Brown and John O'Shea with Patrice Evra the only member of Alex Ferguson's first-choice backline likely to feature.
    • - Burnley know they are in for a tough game tonight - United have won their last 16 games against promoted sides and haven't lost to Burnley in 17 meetings - although the Lancashire side's home form last season was excellent.
    • - Champions Manchester United travel to Burnley for the first time since 1976 hoping to maintain their winning start to the new season.
  • Summary

    • 70' Jensen again comes to Burnley's rescue, this time to deny Giggs after a lovely one-two with Rooney!

I think it is time to take an early review of the champions. Why do we find it difficult to convert good opportunities? Does it mean no one can convert penalties in the whole of that team? We need a stronghold in that midfield as Rooney takes up the Nine position. Some players have no reason to be in that team anymore.
