    Time:90'
    • Liverpool
    • Aston Villa
    • 90+5' The final whistle goes, and Villa have completed their smash and grab win at Anfield, their first in eight years. Liverpool did not look like title contenders on that showing, though of course it is still early in the season.
    • 90+4' Liverpool look like a beaten side now. There is almost no movement off the ball at all as they shift it around to each other.
    • 90+3' Villa are keeping it tidy in midfield now, making Liverpool hurry and scurry just like they had to for so much of this match.
    • 90+2' Heskey has been pretty much an auxilliary defender since he came on, heading away any set piece from Liverpool that comes near him.
    • 90+1' There will be four minutes added to the end of this match. Surely that still won't be enough.
    • 90' Insua's cross is headed away and Johnson blasts a shot on the half-volley but again Friedel is equal to it! Babel then has a go but it's up and into the crowd.
    • 87' You can almost sense the belief draining out of the Liverpool players and their fans alike. Torres's strike to make it 2-1 gave them hope, but the penalty was a killer blow. Skrtel goes ino the referee's book.
    • 84' Voronin finds Carragher of all people on the overlap, but the defender is offside when the ball is played.
    • 83' Babel attempts to drill a shot from distance, but it would have been some strike to trouble the excellent Friedel, not the wide daisycutter that he hit there.
    • 82' Insua's ball to the far post finds Kuyt, but his effort goes back across goal and out for a goal kick. Time is running out for Rafa's men.
    • 80' Ashley Young is replaced by former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey, who gets a sporting pat on the back from Benitez on his way out.
    • 80' Kuyt almost gets the rub of the green as a loose ball is knocked into his path but Beye comes across to stop the Dutchman shooting.
    • 78' Gerrard tries anohter strike from way out and Petrov gets it full in the face! Ashley Young is still limping after that clash with Carragher.
    • 77' Carragher stumbles and takes Young down with him! The penalty scorer is the one who comes off the worst.
    • 76' Rafa rolls the dice again, bringing on Babel for Benayoun.
    • 75' GOAL!! Young calmly strikes to his right, sending Reina the wrong way, and Villa have their two-goal cushion once more!
    • 74' PENALTY!! Gerrard slides in to try and stop Reo-Coker but he has no chance of getting the ball and the referee points to the spot! Ashley Young steps up...
    • 72' GOAL!! Insua bursts into the Villa box and toe-pokes a ball across to Torres, who fires into the roof of the net! Game on!
    • 71' Mascherano shoulder barges Milner over off the ball. The England winger looks a bit dazed, but he's soon up on his feet. Reina will take the free-kick for an offside.
    • 69' Voronin, Benayoun and Torres combine well on the edge of the box and the ball comes back for GERRARD... Friedel gets a solid two hands to the strike from distance.
    • 68' Carragher gets a new head band, but he's limping around now. Oh, wait, it's just his boot slipping off.
    • 67' Voronin comes on, replacing the unfortunate Lucas.
    • 66' Torres goes down under the challenge from Davies in the box... No chance of a penalty there!
    • 65' Andriy Voronin is tightening up his pony tail as he gets ready to come on.
    • 64' Reo-Coker bursts down the right and wins a corner. Villa don't commit too many forward for it. Carragher heads away at the near post.
    • 63' Reina looks annoyed as he can't immediately release the ball after catching it. Villa may have ridden the storm for now.
    • 62' Villa will be hoping that Liverpool can't sustain this frantic tempo for much longer.
    • 61' Torres looks lively as he skips forward but Cuellar and Beye team up to thwart the Spaniard.
    • 59' Benayoun digs out a shot on the edge of the box but it doesn't beat the first Villa player.
    • 59' The cross is delivered and KUYT... his header rebounds off shorey and then the post!
    • 58' Kuyt gets his head to a Liverpool corner and Friedel palms it over the bar. The seocnd corner is cleared but Carragher wins another on the opposite side.
    • 57' Villa clear and Reo-Coker is the furthest man forward. He concedes a foul and then kicks the ball away in frustration - a stupid booking, especially considering Reina did the same in the first half.
    • 56' torres muscles Milner off the ball, and Milner responds with a foul on the left wing! Pressure building on Villa now. Gerrard sends in another wickedly whipped delivery and Friedel palms it behind under pressure from Kuyt.
    • 55' Villa holding firm until Reo-Coker fells Torres on the right. Gerrard's cross is aimed at Carragher at the far post, but it's too high.
    • 54' Suddenly Villa break and Young cuts inside... well dealt with by Mascherano!
    • 53' Gerrard sends in a ball to the near post that Benayoun slides in for but it kicks up off the turf and into Friedel's hands.
    • 52' Mascherano keeps things ticking over as Liverpool bring men forward. Patient build-up here.
    • 50' Villa are keeping the ball in midfield well in this spell, but then Young is flagged up for offside.
    • 49' Gerrard tries to slip a through ball into the path of Torres but Davies blocks it.
    • 47' Torres sprints towards Friedel as the American keeper goes to clear a back pass, and he boots the ball away just in time. Determined start to the half from Liverpool.
    • 47' Johnson weaves his way into the Villa box and finds Gerrard who strikes on the turn... beaten away by Friedel! That's the way to lift to Anfield crowd!
    • 46' No changes for either side as Liverpool kick off.
    • HT The Liverpool playeras are back out on the pitch before Villa or even the officals! You can only imagine what was said at half-time, by Sammy Lee if not Rafa Benitez.
    • 45+2' Three sides of Anfield boo the referee as the half-time whistle goes, even though he was perfectly in the right in everything he did at the end of the half.
    • 45+2' GOAL!! Just as Benitez is complaining to the fourth official about the length of stoppage time, neither Torres or Carragher are tight enough to Davies and the big defender glances the header past Reina to give Villa a 2-0 lead right on the stroke of half-time!
    • 45+1' Ashley Young is surrounded by three red shirts but Villa find Sidwell who STRIKES... The referee gives a corner and Reina boots the ball upfield! He'll earn a booking for that.
    • 45' There will be just the one added minute to the end of the half.
    • 44' Kuyt dispossesses Young on the wing, but Villa have it back. Agbonalhor is drawn out wide to find the ball and his one-two with Milner doesn't quite come off.
    • 43' Reina plucks Shorey's strike out of the air and rolls it out to Insua in one smooth movement. Once again, the break fizzles out though.
    • 42' Milner takes a big run-up and blasts his shot right into the foot of the wall. Villa soak up the Liverpool break as they look to protect their lead until the break.
    • 41' Petrov is fouled by Mascherano, a bit further from goal than the free-kick that led to the Villa goal, and more central.
    • 40' Mascherano tries his luck from distance a second time, but again it's an easy one for the keeper.
    • 39' Reo-Coker has a dig from outside the Liverpool area, but it's wide of the mark.
    • 38' Torres finds half a yard of space in the Villa box and manages to dig out a shot that Friedel palms behind for a corner! Villa clear Gerrard's ball in.
    • 37' Rafa Benitez is busy scribbling something down on a pad. Perhaps it's his Brazilian midfielder in a noose, although we can't confirm that as yet.
    • 36' Insua tries to dink a diagonal ball into the box but it sails all the way to Friedel.
    • 35' Liverpool go right upfield and Johnson crosses, but neither Lucas or Torres can get on the end of it.
    • 34' GOAL!! Young strikes the dead ball and Lucas heads it into the corner of his own net! Reina was moving the other way and had no chance. Villa ahead!
    • 33' Lucas trips Petrov and Villa have a set piece about 25 yards from the Liverpool goal. Again Young and Shorey are around the ball.
    • 32' Sidwell fells Torres in the centre circle. Liverpool decide to just keep the ball rather than launch it forward.
    • 31' Kuyt chases the through ball but Friedel is off his line quickly to boot the ball away.
    • 30' Gerrard is being his usual nuisance to the Villa midfielders, forcing them to panic and concede the throw from which Liverpool attack. The ball ends up in Friedel's arms this time though.
    • 29' Gerrard loses the ball and Milner bursts forward. He finds Agbonlahor but the striker is hounded by Skrtel and it's another goal kick.
    • 28' Glen Johnson has had a good start to his Liverpool career, and he controls well with his chest to steer the ball away from Young and find a team-mate.
    • 27' Agbonlahor goes hareing after a long ball, but can't stop it going out for a goal kick.
    • 26' Gerrard delivers a corner and Cuellar gets a big head on it. Johnson sends the ball back in and Liverpool keep the pressure on.
    • 25' Fabio Capello is in the crowd, sporting a rather natty new pair of specs that you'd expect to see Judge Jules wearing.
    • 24' Having said that, Torres is now sporting an absolutely massive shiner on his left eye!
    • 23' Torres hits the deck after an aerial clash with Habib Beye. Rafa Benitez is livid, but it doesn't look as though the Villa man meant Torres any harm.
    • 22' Villa have done a reasonably good job of keeping Anfield quiet so far. Benayoun checks inside but Torres fouls Reo-Coker as he goes for the ball.
    • 21' Petrov finds Reo-Coker in midfield, but the pass out to Young is errant.
    • 19' Lucas rather cynically blocks Petrov in midfield. The referee gives him a talking-to - or rather plenty of hand signals - indicating he'll have no more of that from the Brazilian.
    • 18' Villa send plenty forward for the free-kick, but Shorey's delivery is an easy catch for Reina.
    • 17' Mascherano slides in and clips the inside of Agbonlahor's boot. The stiker wins the free-kick but limps away.
    • 16' Another good strong bit of defending by Carragher, heading the ball well clear.
    • 15' Villa win a free-kick on the right. Shorey and young stand over it.
    • 14' Benayoun's pass is just behind Torres in the box. He finds Kuyt who lays it across to GERRARD... The Liverpool skipper fires his first-time shot over the bar.
    • 13' Gerrard's free-kick finds Lucas, who can't get a true enough header on it, and Carragher's attempted cross back in goes over everybody. Villa clear.
    • 12' Reina catches the corner and sets up abreak. torres bursts forward and the move ends with Young being booked for obstructing Kuyt.
    • 11' Villa can breathe again. Skrtel gives away a throw and from it Sidwell almost gets in at the byline but Carragher slides in to concede the corner.
    • 9' Bedlam in the Villa box! Torres miscues a shot on the turn, then Gerrard and Benayoun both scuff efforts from close range! Dear oh dear.
    • 8' Agbonlahor rather cheekily wins a corner after tussling with Skrtel. Shorey curls in the dead ball and Torres heads away. A second cross from Shorey is headed by Davies but it's tame.
    • 7' Insua again stops Milner's progress. Villa collect the long clearance and will build again.
    • 6' Mascherano keeps things moving in midfield. Carragher bombs forward now before Johnson gives away a throw. The right-back back tracks well to thwart Agbonlahor's run.
    • 5' Insua intercepts a ball bound for Milner, but Beye cleans up the loose ball.
    • 4' Kuyt tries to find Benayoun down the right but the ball runs out of play.
    • 3' Friedel punches the free-kick away with authority and Villa repel the second wave of attack.
    • 2' Gerrard is knocked over by Cuellar on the left. Good position for the dead ball delivery.
    • 1' Torres chips a ball in and Benayoun is on his own in the Villa box! The midfielder beats Friedel to it, but can only nod his backwards header just wide. Almost a disaster for Villa, with just 33 seconds on the clock!
    • 1' The match is underway!
    • 19:59 The traditional renditon of You'll Never Walk Alone is over with, and Villa are ready to kick off.
    • 19:59 Andrew A is trying to stir things up: "I am the one that gave the intriguingly named Villa the thumbs down - leave predictions till the 90th minute is my theory." Fair point, although it's a good way of avoiding giving one of his own.
    • 19:56 The players are coming out on to the Anfield turf now. Jamie Carragher is still sporting the strapping round his head to protect his stitches sustained in that head-to-head with Skrtel. I'm contractually obliged to mention Terry Butcher at this point.
    • 19:51 We're less than 10 minutes away from kick-off now, Anfield is filling up. Can Villa get their season back on track with what would be a big result, or will Gerrard, Torres and co just be too strong for them? All will be revealed shortly.
    • 19:42 The intriguingly-named David Villa (is he an eternally hopeful Liverpool fan or one of the Holt End faithful?) reckons it will be 1-1 tonight, with Torres and Agbonalhor getting the goals. How do you think this one will go? Leave your comments below, but please keep it nice, eh?
    • 19:40 Gabriel Agbonlahor starts as the lone front man for Villa, although former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey may play some part from the bench. Steve Sidwell keeps his place in midfield ahead of youngster Fabian Delph.
    • 19:38 So, no debut for Liverpool's new Greek defender Sotirios Kyrgiakos as martin Skrtel's jaw has recovered from that aerial clash with Jamie Carragher last week. Yossi Benayoun starts ahead of Ryan Babel, presumably to the relief of many Liverpool fans.
    • 19:34 There were several great strike performances in the Premier League this weekend, but it's Wayne Rooney who heads our Team of the Week
    • 19:32 There's just under half an hour until kick off at Anfield, which is just enough time to check out this week's edition of the rather spiffing Eurosport-Yahoo! podcast.
    • 19:31 Steven Gerrard has scored nine Premier League goals against Aston Villa, more than against any other opponent.
    • 19:31 Villa have won none of the last 15 league meetings with Liverpool
    • 19:31 Liverpool have won five and lost none of the last seven games with Villa at Anfield.
    • 19:30 Villa have not won any of their last six away games in the league after winning the previous seven.
    • 19:30 Liverpool have scored at least three goals in each of their last six league games at Anfield, scoring 23 goals in total in that run.
    • 19:29 Liverpool's last home league defeat to a team other than Chelsea or Manchester United was back in November 2004 against Birmingham.
    • 19:29 Fernando Torres has scored six goals in his last four league games at Anfield.
    • 19:29 Liverpool have scored 47 league goals in 2009, more than any other side.
    • 19:28 Glen Johnson has whipped in nine crosses so far this season for Liverpool but only one has reached a team-mate.
    • 19:28 Emile Heskey has not scored in an away game for Villa since his debut back in January.
    • 19:22 The teams are in. Your referee this evening is Martin Atkinson.
    • 19:22 Liverpool: Reina, Johnson, Carragher, Skrtel, Insua, Mascherano, Lucas, Kuyt, Gerrard, Benayoun, Torres. Subs: Cavalieri, Voronin, Riera, Babel, Kelly, Dossena, Ayala
    • 19:22 Aston Villa: Friedel, Beye, Davies, Cuellar, Shorey, Milner, Sidwell, Petrov, Reo-Coker, Ashley Young, Agbonlahor. Subs: Guzan, Albrighton, Delfouneso, Delph, Heskey, Gardner, Lowry
    • 19:21 Villa have carried their poor form from last season into this, losing at home to Wigan on the opening day before also suffering defeat in Europe.
    • 19:20 Liverpool are aiming to make it two Premier League wins out of two tonight as they host Aston Villa.

    Good morning sports fans,

Patsypool FC and Manure fans love each other really. We're nothing without each other. Try having some banter with an Arsenal fan or a Chelsea fan. It just doesn't work. There's something lacking in their personalties. We both enjoy entertaining ourselves. Patsypool and Manure fans have wit and are at times very humourous. We should both be proud of that.

SCOUSE HATER and the SILENT ASSASSIN both give as much as they take. At times they're the most reasonable of contributors. If there's a fight they'll be the sort to step in and stop it so most of the time I don't have a problem with them and I suggest that you don't either.

Hopefully Benny The Ball will get it together a

I agree with this too. I prefer to carry out my hate and venom in local bars. When I'm celebrating a good win I like to unwind with a bit of gratuitous violence with my 'patsy' mates. I find the Lounge Inn bar in Southport particularly suitable for this purpose.

SCOUSE HATER and the SILENT ASSASSIN both give as much as they take. At times they're the most reasonable of contributors. If there's a fight they'll be the sort to step in and stop it so most of the time I don't have a problem with them and I suggest that you don't either.

Hopefully Benny The Ball will get it together and you can give us a laugh as you fall over each other frantically trying to catch us up in the title run-in. No title would be complete without that comical display every season. It's too early to be tripping yourselves up already.

  9. How sick are the man u fans on this site, I thought they were sick before but after reading some of the comments after monday,I've never seen comments like them in all my life, they ain't football fans, they're certifiable, especially SCOUSE HATER and the SILENT ASSASSIN, it's worrying how much hate there is between football fans? these days!!

  18. Benitez is paying for his foolish mouthing. Remember he said the only team that is worried about Man city is Man u. Look now Man city is above Looserpool. You need not bad mouthing like the way Benitez talks too much and I dont know how he is. But what we know is that at Anfield players are good but a bad carpenter is failing to do his job. Lets wait if they can emulate Man u system beng slow starters but at the end being champions. Benitez should learn how to behave. W
