    • 65' Jones is off... and Sunderland are down to 10 men for the time being.

    • 45'+4 There goes the whistle! And Sunderland take in a one-goal lead at the break, Darren Bent notching his eighth of the season, with a little help from a red balloon!

    • 45'+2 Johnson twists and turns when faced by McCartney... he eventually wins a corner.
    • 45'+1 Cana unleashes an effort from fully 30 yards... but it's poor and Reina is not troubled.
    • 45' Three minues of additional time to be played at the end of the first half.

    • 39' Oooh! Spearing fires inches over the bar at the other end! Cracking effort from the youngster!

    • 31' Agger sticks out a foot and upends Cattermole, who had beaten him and was ready to hare off down the right wing! No booking for the Dane, and he can consider himself lucky.
    • 30' What a challenge by Bardsley to deny Johnson a certain scoring opportunity! Lovely back heel from Benayoun to set the chance up, but just as Johnson is about to pull the trigger, Bardsley manages to wrap his leg around the ball and win the tackle!
    • 28' Kuyt goes up for an aerial challenge with Turner... the Sunderland man goes down and referee Mike Jones decides to book the Dutchman.

    • 18' Benayoun is pulled up for a high foot on McCartney and Sunderland have a free-kick...

    • 14' Just a few warning signs for Sunderland there though...
    • 13' Aurelio fires on goal again! But it's way off target...
    • 12' An almighty scramble in the Sunderland box after McCartney messes up a clearance... Kuyt causes all sorts of problems with dangerous ball into the box which Gordon unconvincingly punches clear... Aurelio fores a shot off... blocked! Johnson is in there, but in the end it's hacked clear by Turner and Sunderland fans breathe a huge sigh of relief!
    • 10' Spearing fancies his chances here... he lets fly from distance, but it's well wide and Gordon is not troubled in the slightest.
    • 9' That balloon on the pitch really did confuse Reina for the goal... he followed its path, rather than the ball. That's sure to be a talking point...
    • 8' Cana will be booked here for a wild lunge in Babel... that's his fourth of the season so far...
    • 7' Sunderland come again... and they win a corner, which Cana meets with a header that flies wide of the mark!
    • 6' What a start for Sunderland! There's no stopping Bent at the moment!
    • 5' GOAL! DARREN BENT! Sunderland take the lead through who else but Bent! Liverpool fail to deal with a ball into the box... it falls to Bent at the far post and he strikes on goal! It appears to hit a red balloon in front of Johnson and the ball diverts off him and past Reina! That's eight for the season now for Bent! 1-0!
    • 4' Lucas falls theatrically to the floor under a challenge from Cattermole... free-kick to Liverpool, which Aurelio will take.
    • 3' Down to the other end and Johnson gets forward in typical fashion before firing wide of the mark!
    • 3' Liverpool are in their dark coloured shirts with golden shorts and socks today... Sunderland in their traditional red and white stripes.
    • 2' First slight chance of the day falls to Sunderland's Reid, who lashes a long-range shot high and wide from around 25 yards out!
    • 1' Here we go! Underway at the Stadium of Light!
    • - It looks like Babel will play up front on his own for Liverpool, with Kuyt and Benayoun supporting from the flanks.
    • - Sunderland boss makes just one change to the side that grabbed a point at Old Trafford - George McCartney replaces the suspended Kieran Richardson.
    • - So, Liverpool are forced into making changes, with Stevn Gerrard and Fernando Torres both out injury and Javier Mascherano suffering the effects of a long trip to South America for Argentina's World Cup qualifiers. He starts on the bench with Fabio Aurelio, Yossi Benayoun, Ryan Babel and Jay Spearing coming into the midfield alongside Lucas.
    • - And today's referee is Mike Jones (Cheshire).
    • - Liverpool: Reina, Johnson, Agger, Skrtel, Carragher, Babel, Lucas, Aurelio, Spearing, Benayoun, Kuyt. Subs: Cavalieri, Voronin, Riera, Mascherano, Insua, Ngog, Kelly
    • - Sunderland: Gordon, Bardsley, Turner, Ferdinand, McCartney, Malbranque, Cana, Cattermole, Reid, Bent, Jones. Subs: Fulop, Nosworthy, Zenden, Campbell, Henderson, Da Silva, Healy
    • - Villa are leading Chelsea in the early kick-off. Follow live text commentary on that game here!
    • - Bruce was also the first manager to win a Premier League match against Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez at Anfield - Birmingham's 1-0 victory on November 4, 2004.
    • - Interestingly, Bruce has only lost one of his previous five previous Premier League home matches against Liverpool, and in total has lost only three of 12 matches against the club (three wins) when he was in charge at Birmingham City and Wigan Athletic.
    • - The Reds have lost back-to-back Premier League matches in almost two years, since a 3-1 defeat at Reading and 1-0 home defeat to Manchester United in December 2007.
    • - Liverpool have won their last six Premier League matches against Sunderland without conceding a goal, since a 2-1 defeat at the Stadium of Light in December 2002.
    • - The two sides have met 16 times in the Premier League. Sunderland have won one, Liverpool 10 and there have been five draws.
    • - They won't be helped by the absence of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres - both are out injured - or an expectant home crowd, but at least Reds fans have statistics on their side.
    • - Rafa Benitez's side have already lost three league matches, including the Chelsea clash on their last outing, prompting talk of their title bid being over already.
    • - And with Liverpool's season having largely failed to get going, the hosts will have the smell of blood in their nostrils today.
    • - Darren Bent in particular has been on fire so far this season, the former Tottenham striker having netted seven in eight games since his summer move, including five in his last four outings.
    • - Only an injury time own goal by Anton Ferdinand prevented the Black Cats from registering a famous victory, but a point against the champions will have nevertheless served to boost confidence in the camp.
    • - Steve Bruce's side head into the encounter on Wearside just two points behind the Reds after a sterling start to the season which was nearly capped by an unlikely win over Manchester United at Old Trafford before the international break.
    • - This season's surprise package Sunderland welcome Liverpool to the Stadium of Light knowing that victory would see them leapfrog their opponents and potentially move into fifth place in the Premier League.
  • Summary

    • 76' Oooh! Henderson fires just wide!
    • 70' Sunderland break now! But Malbranque opts to go for goal when he should really look for Bent in the middle! Carragher gets back to make the challenge!
    • 61' OFF THE POST FROM BENT! It stems from a terrible back header by Skrtel... Reina fails to get there ahead of Bent, who rounds the keeper again, but is this time denied by the outside of the post, having taken it a little too wide!

  1. I wonder what Reina has to say about the beach ball sitting perfectly on the 6 yard line, where a goal kick should normally be taken from. Telling me the "beach ball" strolled - thanks to the wind - all the way from inside the goal to that spot and stayed there for so long that he didn't notice, is such a convenient excuse for ..........

  7. Well I hate to remind you scousers but I did say before the season started that Liverpool would be lucky to finish in the top four this season. I also said that Man Utd were so far above the rest of the premier league that the loss of Ronaldo and Tevez would not affect us in the Premiership, except to let other teams get a bit closer, but it would be felt in the Champions League. Once again it appears that I have got it right.

so why did rafa put mascherano and reira on the bench and let spearing and crappy lucas play. outrageous.
