    • - Don't forget you can watch highlights of this match, along with every Premier League game, from 00:01 on Monday morning (UK only).
    • 90+5' There's the final whistle! A disappointing start for the new regime at Liverpool as they fall to a deserved defeat at Goodison!
    • 90+4' Torres hits a volley that is blocked, and Meireles fires wide. a brief flicker of life from Liverpool, but the game is surely up.
    • 90+3' Babel tries a long shot... straight at Howard, who palms it clear.
    • 90+2' Cahill robs Gerrard and starts a counter-attack. Bilyaletdinov feeds Beckford who goes for goal... OVER!
    • 90+1' Four minutes of stoppage time to be played, minimum. Liverpool still on the front foot.
    • 90' Konchesky crosses from the left looking for Ngog - Distin rises high to head it away.
    • 88' Torres has been booked - I must confessed I did not see what for.
    • 87' TORRES!! Chests the ball down on the left and fires a low shot that Howard palms to safety! A good chance by his standards.
    • 86' Baines with an inswinging corner from the Everton right... cleared and Liverpool come away on the break... Gerrard drags a shot wide.
    • 85' Magnificently, a disgruntled Liverpool fan flicks a double v-sign just as the camera falls on him. And quickly off again.
    • 84' Last change for Liverpool - Jovanovic on for Maxi Rodriguez.
    • 83' Gerrard's diagonal ball provokes some indecision from Howard, who eventually does just enough to touch it behind for a corner. Better from Liverpool.
    • 82' Meireles tees himself up and fires a low shot... blocked.
    • 81' Liverpool are offering nothing going forward as we enter the last 10 minutes. Dispiriting stuff for the red half of Merseyside.
    • 79' Ryan Babel on for Joe Cole.
    • 78' Big penalty shout for a challenge on Beckford! But referee Webb says no foul! And the replay shows he gets it right.
    • 77' Cahill looks long for Beckford, who robs Skrtel and puts the ball in the net... but the whistle has already gone for a foul and by the letter of the law that should be a second yellow for the sub. Thankfully, Webb takes a common sense approach.
    • 76' Yellow card Beckford, who slides through the back of Skrtel.
    • 74' A limping Mikel Arteta makes way for Jermaine Beckford. Presumably Cahill will shift back to a conventional midfield role.
    • 73' Gerrard has been forced to drop deep to come and get the ball, but the consequence is he cannot do proper damage higher up the pitch. Dilemma.
    • 72' Now an Everton change, as Tony Hibbert replaces Heitinga. They take their time over it, naturally.
    • 71' Liverpool's top scorer David Ngog comes on for Lucas. Might as well get some more bodies forward.
    • 70' Everton have just slowed down a touch, and Liverpool are starting to get a few chances. Meireles hits a long shot straight at Howard that the keeper spills and collects at the second attempt.
    • 69' Baines crosses from the left as Cahill and Kyrgiakos tangle inside the box. Muted penalty shouts, but never likely to sway Howard Webb.
    • 68' Cole cuts inside, beats a challenge and goes for goal... always rising over.
    • 67' Error by Cole to give Everton a throw - right in front of a peeved Hodgson. Still no changes, mind.
    • 66' A deeply symbolic volley into Row Z by Torres after Maxi heads it down at the edge of the Everton area. Terrible effort.
    • 65' Maxi slides a decent through ball for Meireles. Not decent enough... Jagielka deals with it.
    • 64' Gerrard spreads it right for Carragher in space, his cross falls to Cole whose shot is blocked. It's still lacking a bit of incisiveness.
    • 63' Baines brings it down the left and plays down the channel for Yakubu... this time Skrtel dispossesses him.
    • 61' Gerrard lofts a speculative ball into the box for Torres to chase... the striker goes down but that's obviously not a foul.
    • 60' Carragher just keeps the ball in on the right flank and his cross is blocked for a corner. But is he really the man you want charging down the wing?
    • 59' Baines with a throw from the Everton left, deep in enemy territory...the ball comes to Arteta who for once takes a bad touch and puts it our for a Liverpool throw.
    • 58' Torres tries to go himself, but takes a heavy touch and Jagielka launches a long clearance to safety.
    • 57' Everton are controlling the game with ease and Liverpool are really not exerting any pressure when the hosts are in possession.
    • 56' Maxi tries a killer ball to Gerrard, but the Liverpool skipper is never going to catch it.
    • 56' Konchesky's cross from the left is not the best, but Bilyaletdinov does not clear properly... Carragher's second cross is also poor.
    • 55' Distin turns calmly past Gerrard, to cheers, then gives the ball away. Oh well.
    • 54' There is a fair amount of gloating going on from the fans in blue around Goodison. The home side are good for their two-goal lead.
    • 53' Bit of a to-do between Cahill and Carragher. Nothing in it really, Carra just disappointed, and well he might be. Reina shanks a clearance into the crowd.
    • 52' Poor old Roy Hodgson looks pensive. But what are his options? The attackers on the bench: Babel, N'Gog, Jovanovic....
    • 51' You simply cannot give Arteta that sort of space at the edge of the box. Well, you can, but if you do you're going to concede a goal.
    • 50' GOOOAAALLL!!! MIKEL ARTETA MAKES IT TWO!! Kyrgiakos clears a corner to the unmarked Arteta at the edge of the box, who lashes a swerving shot past the unsighted Reina.
    • 48' Torres piles into Baines as the Everton man clears. Didn't seem to be any malice in it, but Webb brings play back for a free-kick.
    • 47' Cahill flicks on to Yakubu, who continues to give Kyrgiakos problems... the Greek just about shepherds the ball back to Reina.
    • 46' And we are under way at Goodison. Early chance for Maxi Rodriguez, whose low drive is well held by Tim Howard.
    • 46' Half-time change: Diniyar Bilyaletdinov replaces Leon Osman.
    • - Michael: 'Can all of you see how Liverpool are playing defensively? When the posses the ball they like passing the ball at their own territory while Torres is there aiting for the ball. I think its time Hodgson goes. Or must we be relegated before he goes?'
    • - STEPHEN: 'Why oh why is O'Neill not manager of the reds yet, get the numpty Hodgson out he is killing the club'
    • - Some user comments, and there ain't much love for Roy Hodgson: Bluelaguna: 'Roy Hodgson is not the man to revive Liverpool, Step aside Roy, this job is too big for you!!!!'
    • 45+3' That's half-time, and Everton take a deserved lead into the break.
    • 45+2' Gerrard crosses from the right. He's only got Cole to aim at and in the end it beats everyon and goes out for an Everton throw.
    • 45+1' Two minutes of stoppage time to be played.
    • 45' Osman tries a long shot... stings the hands of Reina but straight at the Liverpool keeper.
    • 44' GOAL for Alberto Aquilani! Oh, right, he plays for Juventus now. But an absolute screamer from the former Liverpool man. Juventus v Lecce
    • 43' Joe Cole keeps plugging away with those right-footed inswinging crosses from the left, but their quality has been distinctly mixed to say the least.
    • 42' Seamus Coleman has had a really good first half at right-back for Everton, and has an assist to his name.
    • 41' The ball drops in the Everton box but Meireles and Torres get in each other's way and it falls to an Everton defender.
    • 40' Joe Cole is starting to see more of the ball on the Liverpool left.
    • 39' Osman goes off, possibly not to return, as Arteta's corner is defender easily.
    • 38' Coleman's cross is deflected for a corner, but there is concern for Osman, who has stayed down clutching his ankle.
    • 37' Arteta corner from the right... Gerrard heads it behind for another as Cahill and Carragher jostle.
    • 36' That's no more than the Toffees have deserved for their dominance so far. Tremendous noise around Goodison.
    • 35' First blood to Everton. The camera cuts, inevitably to John W Henry, who tells his companion: "Sell, sell, sell!" Maybe...
    • 34' GOOOAAALLL!!! TIM CAHILL SMASHES IT INTO THE ROOF OF THE NET!! Coleman dribbles down the right, cuts it back and Cahill smashes the bobbling ball past Reina from eight yards. Brilliantly clean strike.
    • 33' Liverpool play a neat triangle around the referee but then Lucas spoils it by crossing out of play. Roy Hodgson does his best avuncular sigh as Sammy Lee frantically barks red-faced instructions.
    • 32' Meireles is still complaining to the ref about Yakubu. Combative stuff here. Although a touch short on quality.
    • 31' Now Meireles is booked for holding back Yakubu. The Liverpool man claims Yakubu put his hand in his face.
    • 31' Liverpool corner cleared to the edge of the box where Meireles cracks a powerful shot which is blocked.
    • 30' Oh, actually, the replay shows Cahill kicked Gerrard as her ran away from him. Spot on from Webb. Who'd be a ref?
    • 29' Cahill is in the book for a tackle on Gerrard a couple of minutes ago for which Webb played advantage. There are so many bad challenges going in, that does seem a bit arbitrary.
    • 28' YAKUBU!! Clean, low strike from the edge of the box, but Reina dives low to his right to make a relatively comfortable save.
    • 27' Lucas brings it away on the break for Liverpool. He plays it wide left for Cole who crosses... headed away.
    • 26' Hard to tell all these Liverpool baldies apart - Skrtel, Konchesky, Meireles, Reina. Well, I know which one is Reina...
    • 25' Torres turns on the burners as he runs agaionst Distin. He does not win the ball but it is a heartening burst of pace. Actually, why am I talking like he's Michael Owen?
    • 24' Arteta is brought down again but Webb plays advantage... the Everton move breaks down, however.
    • 23' TORRES!!! Cole with an inswinging cross from the left, Torres glances a header goalwards and Howard tips over!
    • 22' Pacy diagonal ball in from the left by Cole... no red shirts in the area, Distin makes an easy clearance.
    • 21' Coleman takes a fortnight over a throw from the right, and when he does evenutally take it he finds the head of Kyrgiakos.
    • 20' Yakubu has made a good start up front for Everton. Baffling that he started the season behind Jermaine Beckford in the pecking order.
    • 19' First booking to Maxi Rodriguez for a sliding challenge on Baines. By no means the worst tackle we have seen today.
    • 18' A sloppy pass from Lucas nearly lets Yakubu in but Kyrgiakos reacts just in time to intercept and play it back to Reina.
    • 17' A right grapple going on in the box between Carragher and Cahill in the Liverpool box. Anyone worried about the demise of football as a contact sport can rest easy.
    • 16' Now Gerrard is in trouble for coming through the back of Arteta. A certain booking... actually, it isn't. Lenient stuff from Webb. And we know how well that approach worked in the World Cup final.
    • 15' Yakubu races into the box, collides with Konchesky and hits the turf. Everton want a penalty and Webb, probably rightly, says no dice.
    • 14' All Everton so far, and Phil Neville thumps a long free-kick into the box. Away by Kyrgiakos but back with the blue shirts. Played into the box and controlled by Distin who turns and SHOOTS!! OVER! Centre-back's finish etc. II.
    • 13' Panicky defending from Liverpool, who attempt to pass their way out of trouble but Skrtel can only clog it out for a throw.
    • 12' Arteta strikes the free-kick into the wall, Osman plays it back into the box and the ball breaks for JAGIELKA!! Blazes a wild shot into the crowd. Centre-back's finish etc.
    • 11' Yakubu turns Skrtel at the edge of the box and the Liverpool man hauls him down. Good position for Arteta, Baines or possibly Osman to have a shot.
    • 10' Heitinga with a late challenge on Joe Cole, who goes down like a big Jessie. Referee Webb, who sent Heitinga off in the World Cup final, settle for a stern word.
    • 9' Picking up on the switch pass theme, Arteta plays it 60 yards across the pitch for Baines. 65 actually - the ball goes over Baines and out for a throw.
    • 8' Nothing gets a crowd going like a good crossfield pass, in this case to Coleman on the right. But he cannot make anything of the opportunity.
    • 7' Arteta has a chat with referee Webb. 'Cheers for not booking me, etc.'
    • 6' Coleman runs at Konchesky but the Liverpool left-back stays with him, makes the challenge and manages to play it out for a throw off the Everton man.
    • 5' The ball comes back in, Reina punches as far as Coleman but the right-back cannot get his shot away. Then Arteta clatters into Lucas and gets a ticking off from Howard Webb.
    • 4' Everton win the first corner of the game, which is headed high in the air by Gerrard, then half away by Lucas.
    • 3' Carragher gives Torres an earful on account of the Spaniard's perceived lack of movement. Carra lecturing Torres on off-the-ball movement? Hmm...
    • 2' Liverpool have enjoyed almost unbroken possession so far without actually doing anything with it.
    • 1' Game on! Liverpool kick off, playing from right to left as we see it. The Goodison Park pitch is bathed in sunshine, and both teams are in their iconic home colours. The stage set perfectly.
    • 13:30 Please leave your comments at the bottom of the page - the best will be published at half-time. For now, how about this from Ian: "why do liverpool fans blame hicks and gillett, benitez is to blame nobody else, bottom line the yanks gave benitez a hell of alot of money much more than the majority of premier clubs, come on everton, from the magic makems." Couldn't agreee less. Benitez's transfer record much better than advertised. Who bought Torres, Reina, Alonso, Mascherano, Garcia?
    • 13:28 And here comes John W Henry, signing autographs like a rock star... all smiles among the Liverpool top brass.
    • 13:25 Martin Broughton files into his plush seat. He is unquestionably Merseyside's most popular Chelsea fan.
    • 13:20 Liverpool are in the relegation zone for the first time since October 1984. They eventually finished second in the table that season - 13 points behind champions Everton. Any chance of that happening this season? Well, no.
    • 13:15 Everton and Liverpool have met 182 times in the league. Everton have won 56, Liverpool 70 and there have been 56 draws. They have met 36 times in the Premier League era. Everton have won eight, Liverpool 16 and there have been 12 draws.
    • 13:10 Why oh why does Super Sunday protocol dictate that Keys, Gray, Redknapp and Fowler are holed up in a studio in Blackpool?
    • 13:05 The Mancini comments include this magnificent quote: "I have spoken to them (Hart and Adam Johnson) about this. What I said was private, but it is better they go with a woman than a drink. It is better. That is what I did when I was a player." Mancini's comments in full
    • 13:05 And Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has had his say on Joe Hart's boozy stag-do 'antics'. Mancini: No room for booze hounds
    • 13:05 Scum-like goings-on in Sardinia, where Cagliari v Inter was delayed on account of racist abuse aimed at Samuel Eto'o. Full story
    • 13:05 Liverpool co-owner Tom Werner says Roy Hodgson has the new owners' full support, and will have a transfer kitty to spend. NESV give Hodgson backing
    • 13:00 A measure of the two teams' miserable start from Infostrada Sports: Everton (6) and Liverpool (6) have picked up a combined total of 12 points in their opening seven matches. This is the lowest points total for these two Merseyside clubs at this stage of a top flight season in 84 years - since Liverpool (10) and Everton (1) had the equivalent of a combined total of 11 points from their first seven matches in the 1926-27 season (using 3 points for a win).
    • 12:55 TEAMS: EVERTON: Howard, Coleman, Jagielka, Distin, Baines, Arteta, Heitinga, Neville, Osman, Cahill, Yakubu... Subs: Subs: Mucha, Hibbert, Bilyaletdinov, Beckford, Gueye, Mustafi, Baxter... LIVERPOOL: Reina, Carragher, Kyrgiakos, Skrtel, Konchesky, Lucas, Meireles, Rodriguez, Cole, Gerrard, Torres... Subs: Jones, Aurelio, Jovanovic, Babel, Ngog, Spearing, Kelly... Referee: Howard Webb (S Yorkshire)
    • 12:50 Here's a story about David Moyes and Roy Hodgson going out drinking together in Belgium. (Probably not as interesting as it sounds)
    • 12:45 It has been a traumatic start to the season for both clubs, but you may have heard that Liverpool have new owners. John W Henry and NESV associates are out in force at Goodison.
    • 12:40 Welcome to live coverage of the Merseyside derby from Goodison Park!
  • Summary

    • 87' TORRES!! Chests the ball down on the left and fires a low shot that Howard palms to safety! A good chance by his standards.
    • 78' Big penalty shout for a challenge on Beckford! But referee Webb says no foul! And the replay shows he gets it right.

  7. This is the last straw either Hodgson starts making changes or it may be time for him to go. Martin O'Neill is still available.

Some players are just not up to Liverpool's standard. Kyrgiakos, Lucas, Babel and Rodriquez should all be let go. Give some of the youngsters a chance. Ayala for example is so much better than Kyrgiakos as a central defender. Recall him from the loan deal.

A possible formation change would be to try Gerrard at left wing, Joe Cole in a central attacking role just behind Torres, and Glen Johnson at right wing. The only hole would then be to find a rightback. Carragher can remain as a stop gap solution, or give Martin Kelly a shot. Konchesky at left back , leaving a central pairing of either, Skrtel, Agger, Ayala or Danny Wilson. And what the hell is happening to Aurelio? Still injured I suppose. Should have kept Insua instead of re-signing Fabio. Finally Mereiles and Paulsen at central midfield. Or get rid of one of them to play 4-3-3 with Ngog partnering Torres up front.

For all his strenghts, Glen Johnson is not a good enough right back. Better suited at right midfield so that he can continue to provide crosses and maraud down the right as well as provide defensive cover. Everyone talks about Alonso leaving but the other big loss in the same year was Arbeloa who provided much better defensive cover at right back.
