    • 61' Javier Hernandez looks set to come on as Sir Alex Ferguson gives his young starlet a few words of advice.

    • 59' Nani is brought down on the edge of the Newcastle box by Smith, but only after the offside flag had been raised.
    • 58' Fletcher is booked for a mistimed challenge, and the Manchester United goalscorer is furious with the referee as Barton hits the turf.
    • 57' Now it is Smith's turn to track back as he denies Nani with a strong tackle inside the Newcastle half.
    • 56' Valencia tracks back superbly to deny Smith as the Newcastle midfielder makes ground and that was a fine challenge.
    • 55' What a chance for United! Rooney is slipped through on goal from a Valencia pass, but the forward unselfishly looks for Berbatov to no avail. Seconds earlier, Scholes looked to have been brought down by Coloccini, but the referee said no!

    • 50' Coloccini lumps a long ball upfield to Carroll which the forward wins in the air, but Vidic ensures he cannot bring it down in his stride.
    • 49' Nani looks to slip in a deft delivery to Rooney after a sharp run, but the Portugese has his effort cut out by Williamson.
    • 48' Gutierrez breaks for Newcastle with a powerful run from deep inside his own half, and the Argentine makes a good run down the left.
    • 47' Smith links up effectively with Carroll, but Van der Sar is swiftly off his line to claim a loose ball inside the United box.
    • 46' Neither manager sees fit to make a change as the second half begins, and United are straight back into their stride with Paul Scholes on the ball.
    • 45+2' The half-time whistle goes at Old Trafford, and Manchester United lead 2-0 courtesy of goals from Dimitar Berbatov and Darren Fletcher. The hosts look very comfortable indeed.
    • 45+1' Fletcher makes a sharp run down the left, but the Scot cannot prevent a goal kick as he attempts to latch on to Scholes's through ball in vain.
    • 45' Two minutes will be added at the end of this first half, and United continue to dominate through Nani out on the left.
    • 44' Scholes continues to be instrumental in midfield as the playmaker exchanges passes with Carrick, then Rooney.
    • 43' Enrique hammers a long ball upfield, but Gutierrez is never going to reach that and it drifts out of play.
    • 42' United are straight back in possession as Smith loses the ball to Scholes, and the hosts are dictating the play as Rooney almost forces his way through on goal.

    • 39' STAT: Sir Alex Ferguson has never lost a home league match on the opening day of the season in charge of Manchester United. His sides have won ten and drawn four of their 14 opening matches of the season at Old Trafford under Ferguson.
    • 38' Valencia shows his pace once more down the right for United, but his cross is too deep for Berbatov.
    • 37' Enrique finds Perch with a raking pass outwide, but Barton fires a tame shot straight at Van der Sar from the right-back's pass.
    • 36' Good harrying from Nolan sees the midfielder dispossess Scholes in midfield, but he only has Carroll for company and cannot pick him out with his pass.
    • 35' United are relentless as they press forward, and Newcastle are firmly under the cosh with Scholes instrumental.
    • 34' Nani skips down the left with a sharp run before firing across a low delivery, but Williamson is on hand to clear the danger.
    • 33' BERBATOV OPENS THE SCORING! Manchester United break Newcastle down, and Berbatov beats the offside trap to fire a low shot beyond Harper from Scholes's pinpoint pass!
    • 32' Scholes and Nani exchange passes outwide for United, before Nolan makes a fine interception with a clean challenge to alleviate the danger.
    • 31' Berbatov heads the ball back to Rooney from Valencia's deep delivery, but the forward blasts his volley high and wide as the chance goes begging!
    • 30' Nani drifts over a deep delivery to the back post but, with Berbatov loitering ominously, Harper does well to punch clear.
    • 29' United appeal for handball as Evra's dinks over a cross from the left which Perch blocks away, but the hosts did not really fancy their chances of getting a penalty there.
    • 28' United's pressure is becoming pretty incessant now as Evra hares down the left and crosses, only for Coloccini to beat Berbatov to the ball.
    • 27' Williamson almost gets himself into real trouble with a poor clearance which falls to Rooney, but the defender makes amends with a fine sliding challenge to deny the forward!
    • 26' Enrique volleys a low clearance down the left which O'Shea has to deal with rather awkwardly, and Newcastle are defending stoutly.
    • 25' STAT: No side has collected a better points per game average (2.38) in Premier League matches on a Monday than Manchester United. Imposing. Thanks OptaJoe.
    • 24' Nani whips over a devilish delivery from the left which Williamson does superbly to head clear with a full-length dive in the box.
    • 23' Rooney takes the free-kick but can only find the chest of Smith in the Newcastle wall - poor. David Jones of Wolves could teach Wayne a thing or two from that range.
    • 22' Nani hurtles through on goal only to be hauled down by Perch, but that was more clumsy than cynical and the right-back is shown the yellow card to follow Barton. Does anyone wish to follow him?
    • 21' Carroll wins another imperious header in the United half, and Vidic is really struggling to contain the imposing forward.
    • 20' STAT: This is the third time these sides have met on the opening weekend – Manchester United winning 2-0 at home (2000) and drawing 1-1 at home (2008).
    • 19' Fletcher feeds the ball in to Rooney from the left, but the Scot's vision is to no avail as the striker fires wide once more.
    • 18' Joey Barton is booked! Sporting a pretty horrific moustache, the midfielder clips the heels of Valencia and is promptly shown the yellow card. That was pretty harsh!
    • 17' Williamson makes a fine intervention at the near post to deny the onrushing Rooney a strike at goal from Valencia's cross.
    • 16' Evans bides his time at the back before Valencia enjoys a spell of possession down the right for the hosts.
    • 15' Nani wastes the set-piece with a poor effort which does not clear the wall, and Rooney blasts the rebound over the bar. Not what the crowd were hoping for!
    • 14' There it is - Alan Smith scythes down Paul Scholes, and that gifts United a dangerous free-kick which Nani and Valencia stand over.
    • 13' Carroll wins a towering header to beat Vidic to the ball again, only this time in his own penalty area to clear the ball to safety.
    • 12' Evra makes good strides once more down the left, only for Nani's speculative shot to be deflected wide by Nolan for a corner.
    • 11' What a miss! Carroll rises above Vidic to win a clean header in front of goal from Nolan's corner, but the forward can only direct it wide of the near post - he should have scored, no doubt about it!
    • 10' Carroll wins a corner with a rampaging run down the left, and that is good work from the bustling forward.
    • 9' Berbatov finds Rooney outwide with a raking diagonal ball, but the forward shows a touch of his England form by blazing his shot into Row Z.
    • 8' Van der Sar is seeing a lot of the ball in the guise of United's sweeper, and the hosts are content to build slowly from the back.
    • 7' The answer for Nolan is a tub of vaseline, and he is now right as rain! Williamson looks commanding at the back for Newcastle with two headed clearances.
    • 6' Nolan gets a big whack on the back of the head and lies on the ground in agony after an aerial clash with the indestructible Vidic - he gets to his feet gingerly and should be okay.
    • 5' STAT: Newcastle have not won in their last 15 Premier League matches against Manchester United, since a 4-3 home victory in September 2001. This is the club's longest current ongoing streak without a victory over another top flight club.
    • 4' Patrice Evra, who was granted an extended break by Sir Alex Ferguson following France's World Cup debacle, shows his pace down the left with a swift break.
    • 3' Roberto Mancini watches on in a slick suit as his Manchester rivals stroke the ball around patiently at the back.
    • 2' James Perch gets an early touch on the right for Newcastle and the defender does well to clear under pressure from Rooney.
    • 1' We're underway at Old Trafford, and an enormous roar acknowledges the fact! United press forward immediately through Valencia down the right.
    • 19:55 A fervent atmosphere meets the players as former United player Alan Smith leads out the visitors. Nemanja Vidic again skippers the hosts. Here we go!
    • 19:50 Bobby backs Berbatov to deliver this evening, and Ivan also thinks the Bulgarian is the right choice to partner Rooney. However, Turk says Berbs has to make a good start this season or he will be out of Old Trafford! What do you think? Post your views below.

    • 19:40 FACT: Manchester United are unbeaten in their last 26 top flight home matches against Newcastle United, since losing 2-0 in the old Division One in February 1972. This is their longest ever unbeaten run at home against another top flight club.
    • 19:35 He may not be starting this evening, but Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick is eager to atone for a desperately disappointing 12 months in a red shirt. "Last season was disappointing and I ended up having a hard summer," he admitted. "But this is my fifth season and during that time I have gained a lot of experience. "I am more determined than ever." Read more here
